Katrina glared up at her ceiling, angry at the images her subconscious kept wanting to replay every time she closed her eyes. She hadn't been able to sleep well thanks to dreaming about her old crew and Captain. Had she known this would be the after effect of telling Law about them she would have told him to shove it and tried harder to leave his room.
"Why the hell did he want to know so bad anyways?"
She wondered to herself as she got to her feet, pulling on a pair of shorts she'd had laying on the floor. There was no point trying to sleep, that obviously wasn't going to happen for her. She was up earlier than she usually would be thanks to the fact she'd gotten little to no sleep. She was even up earlier than Law, something she was currently grateful for. She didn't exactly want to talk to him right now. His questions were too invasive for her own good, she now couldn't even sleep thanks to him.
Katrina made a quick breakfast for herself and the others, momentarily managing to get her mind off of everything else but making sure the bacon didn't burn before covering up the food, scribbling a quick note to her crewmates, then going above deck and walking down the gangplank onto the Archipelago. Law had told Penguin and Shachi to dock at the island again for some reason that, at the moment, Katrina really didn't care enough to wonder about. As she walked among the people milling about the Grove, Katrina kept to herself and kept her head down so as not to be recognized by the few Marines she saw walking around. No doubt trying to find any pirates lurking around. The last thing she needed right now was to get involved with the Marines.
She made her way back to the Grove that housed the brothel she'd been living in for the past three years and wasted no time in walking inside, up the stairs past security ignoring them as they shouted after her, and straight to Jericho's office. She recalled him drunkenly bragging about how secure his safe was in his office that no one could find it. It didn't take a genius to figure out the blonde idiot had hidden it behind one of the paintings of a scantily clad woman. Picking the lock on the deceased blonde's safe, Katrina couldn't help the smile that spread across her face at the sight of the money he had managed to procure through his business. Reaching inside, Katrina dragged all the money into the bag she'd brought along with her before tying it shut and tossing it over her shoulder. On the walk out, Katrina could feel the eyes of everyone on her as she descended the stairs. She ignored the whispers from the whores inside, she'd dealt with enough of their catty attitudes. She wasn't in the mood to deal with any of them if they stopped her, but even on her way out Katrina couldn't help admire how confident they were with their bodies to show them off to complete strangers like that. Her ex included.
The brothel was loud with the sound of clinking mugs, laughing drunks, and music. The Swift Pirates had decided to spend their time waiting for their ship to be coated at the brothel on one of the Groves.
"You seem rather interested in that blonde Loki."
Katrina said sourly as she saw her captain look away from the blonde woman across the room to look down at her by his side.
"Aww, is my Kitty Kat getting jealous?"
The auburn haired man asked as he leaned down and ran a hand along Katrina's cheek.
"N-No!"
She denied loudly, blushing at the fact the room got quiet immediately after her outburst.
"You know Kat, if you'd let Captain sleep with ya he wouldn't be looking elsewhere."
Hanz called drunkenly from the next table over making the brunette's face flush even more.
"Yeah! D-Don't you know a well satisfied man….hic…..is a happy man….hic."
Gregory drunkenly piped up from beside her. She threw her mug at the other brunette, ignoring the series of laughter from her crewmates after she did.
"Don't worry my dear Kat, you're the only one I'm interested in."
Loki said after leaning down to whisper in her ear. He then leaned the rest of the way, pressing his lips to hers, silencing anything she might have had to say in return.
Katrina shook her head to attempt to shake the memory her subconscious had shoved into the forefront of her mind only to run into something hard.
"Hey! What where you're-Oh, it's you."
A voice snapped and when Katrina looked up a pair of red-eyes stared back at her. It took her a moment to recognize the pale red-head, but once she realized who she'd run into she resisted the urge to groan.
"That really hurt when you took a bite out of me girl, did I taste good?"
He asked, a twisted smile making its way onto his face. It was then Katrina realized the man was wearing lipstick. As surprising as it was, she honestly couldn't deny he was somehow able to pull it off without coming across as effeminate. Now that she thought about it, all of Kid's crew seemed to scream psycho rocker. She wondered briefly if he was aware of how his appearance made people act, but then again, something told her he knew and yet simply didn't care.
"What do you want Eustass? I'm not in the mood for this."
Katrina said, pulling her attention from her wandering thoughts about the red-head to the fact he was currently standing in the way of the direction she wished to be going.
"Relax, you're the one who ran into me."
He said and Katrina signed, her glare softening into a tired glance as she realized he was right. She was just being snippy because of lack of sleep.
"I'm sorry, I'm just really not in the best of moods today."
She explained, halfway apologizing to the other pirate.
"Oh? You and Trafalgar have a fight or something?"
He asked and Katrina settled him with a glare, her temper starting to reach its limit already and this man was unknowingly pushing already sore buttons.
"Why are you still here Eustass? I already apologized for runnin' into you, what else do you want with me?"
She asked tiredly. She just wanted to hurry back to the sub and lay back down in her bed. Maybe if she was lucky she might manage to fall asleep….question was, what was waiting for her once she did? More memories she no longer wishes to revisit? It didn't seem to matter to her subconscious, her dreams were filled with her reliving the moment at the brothel over and over. Hearing Loki tell her he didn't need weak people on his crew or sharing his bed. Waking up and realizing they were really gone. And as if that wasn't enough, some dreams were of her home island. Before she joined the Swift Pirates.
"I wanted to offer you a place in my crew."
Kid suddenly said, making Katrina's attention snap back to the red-head. She stared at him for a few seconds, trying to see if he was playing a joke for his own sick amusement. She only found honest curiosity in his eyes.
"Thanks, but no thanks."
She said before deciding to walk around him since it didn't look like he was going to move out of her way.
"The offer is open if you ever change your mind! I like a girl with your kind of spit-fire attitude!"
He called out after her and Katrina could only shake her head in slight disbelief. The last thing she'd expected once she ran into him again was an invitation to join his crew. Last he'd seen her she literally took a chunk out of his arm.
'Definitely crazy. Gotta be.'
Katrina thought to herself as she continued making her way back through the Groves to the one they'd docked the ship at.
Ignoring the looks everyone gave her when she returned to the sub with a decently sized bag thrown over her shoulder when she'd first left empty-handed, Katrina went straight to her room and deposited the bag of money she'd taken from Jericho's safe in the hole she'd made under the frame of her bed. Walking back out, she surprisingly didn't pass anybody on her way to the deck of the sub, but counted her blessings at the same time. She honestly wasn't in the mood to talk to anyone right now. Law hadn't come out of his room to her knowledge, and seeing how he hadn't sought her out she assumed she was free to do as she pleased.
Taking said free time, Katrina walked out onto the deck of the Polar Tang and the outside almost seemed to welcome her. A breeze picking up as she padded out onto the deck til she reached the railings. The sun was still hanging high in the air, yet the wind felt cold. Katrina could feel goosebumps start to form along her arms and legs, but ignored the chill as she sat down along the side of the ship, dangling her legs over the side, a leg on either side of the railing. She sighed quietly to herself as she leaned her forehead against the white railing, closing her eyes tiredly. She'd finally managed to stop thinking about Loki and the Swift Pirates, but she was still in a terrible mood from lack of sleep. She'd not spoken to any of the others and kept her distance because she didn't want to chance going off on them because of something small. Her temper was horrible on a normal basis, but when she didn't have much sleep she was more irritable and more unpredictable than a sleeping Sea King.
"Kat?"
Katrina heard Bepo call for her, but didn't respond. Shortly after she heard him padding over to her and sitting down beside her.
"Are you okay? You seem…..irritated."
Bepo asked softly and Katrina couldn't help but smile slightly at the bear's attempt to gently probe the waters. She hadn't exactly done the best job hiding her mood so she wasn't too surprised the crew wanted to know what was up. Lifting her head and turning it ever so slightly to look at the polar bear beside her the brunette chuckled dryly to herself.
"I should have known you'd pick up on that."
She said, watching as Bepo continued to stare at her with a worried look on his face.
"I just didn't get a lot of sleep last night."
She said, turning to look out at the oceanic view in front of them.
"How come?"
Came the expected answer, Katrina silently chuckled to herself before shaking her head. She figured he wouldn't just leave it alone. Bepo seemed to have a child-like manner about him that made everything he did seem cute. This was the reason the brunette found she wasn't all that frustrated with being asked these questions since it was him.
"Because of memories Bepo. I keep rememberin' my old crew and captain because Law asked about them last night, so the memories are still fresh in my mind whether I want them to be or not."
She said and saw Bepo look down at his paws sadly before apologizing. Katrina laughed at the action before reaching out and scratching the first mate behind the ears. She smiled when he tilted his head towards her hand for further scratches.
"You don't have to worry about me goin' back to them hun. You guys are my crew now. You're my family, and a helluva lot better than my real family."
She told him, trying to cheer him up when she spotted the pink fur on his paws again.
"The fact you bothered to look after me already means you're doin' better as my family than my real one. Thank you."
Katrina said in earnest and smiled again when she saw how flustered Bepo got at the fact she'd pieced together he had been the one to clean the blood off her.
"I'm sorry."
Bepo said, bowing his head and Katrina couldn't help but laugh at that. The poor polar bear stared at the brunette uncertain if that meant she was in a better mood or not.
"Did you not get along with your family?"
He asked and Katrina felt her laugh get stuck in her throat, then turn into a cough. Clearing her throat after she turned her gaze back out at sea as the wind picked up, blowing her hair about her face.
"You could say that."
She said and could feel Bepo staring at her. A couple silent moments passed between them before she found herself continuing.
"My parents were both Marines and were gone all the time. They left me in the care of my older brothers, they loved playin' games with me even if I didn't want to play."
Katrina said as she followed a group of seagulls flying past.
"They really loved playin' one specific game."
She said, her eyes narrowing at the memories flashing through her mind until she was glaring at the seagulls as they flew away.
"What game?"
Bepo asked and Katrina turned her attention to her furry companion.
"They called it Pirates and Marines."
She said and saw Bepo smile.
"That sounds fun."
He said, making Katrina laugh humorlessly at his statement. It wasn't his fault, to anyone who didn't know. Who didn't go through what she did, it would sound like a harmless game.
"Yeah, I suppose it does."
She said through her teeth, but Bepo didn't seem to notice as he glanced at the Archipelago as people started running around like someone was chasing them.
"What's goin' on?"
Katrina asked when she finally noticed, following Bepo's gaze to the shoreline.
"There's going to be a war at Marineford between the Navy and the Whitebeard Pirates because the Navy plans to execute Ace."
Bepo said and Katrina felt her blood run cold at the mention of Navy HQ. She knew that place well though she'd only been a handful of times. It was all her brother ever talked about. How they'd become Marines like their parents and get strong enough to be stationed at Marineford. Her own parents had been stationed there periodically, which resulted in their absences at home.
"Kat, are you okay?"
Bepo asked concerned, snapping Katrina out of her daze. Her eyes went down to her hands to see she had balled them up and her nails were digging into her palms. Little crescent indents were left, but thankfully this time she hadn't drawn blood. No longer feeling like having company, Katrina got to her feet and without answering Bepo, walked inside and headed to her room.
Leaning against the kitchen counter with a cup of hot chocolate in hand, Katrina watched as Law, Penguin, Shachi, Bepo, and Jambarl all left the sub to go out onto the Archipelago. She had no idea where they were going, but she didn't rightly want to know so badly as to ask or go with. She still hadn't spoken to Law since she'd told him about her old crew and it seemed Bepo had given up on trying to figure out what had made her shut herself away in her room for three hours. She'd tried sleeping during that time to no avail, instead it seemed every time she closed her eyes she could see one of her brothers' faces smiling at her. She still couldn't believe she'd actually told Bepo about her family. Sure she hadn't told him anything about what her brothers did, but she probably would have had the subject not been changed. It hadn't taken the brunette long to realize Bepo was very much like a teddy bear to her. Instead of being a comfort object, he was her comfort person. She found she felt comfortable talking to him and letting some of her walls down around him. She wondered if it was because he was a fluffy animal or simply someone she trusted that much, but either way the conversation had stirred her memories and she was struggling to get them under control again. The mere thought of what her brothers did to her made her want to shut herself back in her room until the memories left her alone, but if she did that every time they surfaced she'd never leave her room at all.
Several hours passed before Law and the others returned. Katrina had just finished setting the table when they did. She expected them to all sit and start eating as usual, but instead Law told Penguin and Shachi to have the sub dive. The two ran off to do as their Captain said without so much as even sniffing their food.
"Where are we headin' Law?"
Katrina asked, speaking to him for the first time since she left his bedroom and didn't miss the surprised look on her captain's face when he looked at her before his expression returned to his usual smirk.
"Marineford."
Katrina tensed, her grip on the plate in her hand tightening to the point she heard a faint crack from the ceramic.
"I see."
She said, not meeting her Captain's gaze as she walked into the kitchen to throw away the cracked plate. Getting a new one from the cabinet on her way back to the table before getting her dinner and starting to eat without another word.
Law had noticed the way Katrina reacted to learning where they were going. He wasn't too sure why, but that didn't matter to him at the moment. Right now, something was telling him he desperately had to get to Marineford as quickly as possible so he was. He didn't know what purpose he could possibly serve there, but his instincts screamed he should go regardless.
Penguin and Shachi returned after setting their course and upon their arrival dinner commenced like it usually did. However Law noticed Katrina didn't seem to pay as much attention to the room as she usually did. When Bepo tried talking to her, she apologized and asked him to repeat himself. It was then that Law noticed the dark circles that were beginning to appear around her eyes. He was about to address it and ask why she hadn't been sleeping when she stood, took her dishes to the sink, then excused herself before slipping out of the room. Law frowned at Katrina's change in character, but right now he had more important things to focus on besides his fascination with his cook. If it got worse then he'd order a check up, but for now he simply let it go.
Blue-green eyes filled with terror looked up at emerald green. Nicholas stood above her, knife in hand and raised it before swiftly bringing it down, embedding the blade in her abdomen. Katrina screamed, but that only seemed to fuel her brother. He removed the blade, trailing it up her stomach leaving a thin red line that became thicker as the blood started pooling to the surface of the new wound.
"Where is the stolen property?"
He asked, going along with his insane game insisting she had stolen property of the Government.
"Nicholas, please!"
Katrina begged, biting back the tears that wanted to fall only for her lip to start shaking upon seeing the deranged look in her older brother's eyes.
"Let's see if a little torture will loosen your tongue."
He said before picking up one of the candles on the table she'd been tied to and holding the flame to her chest. Burning pain shot through her body and Katrina tried to get away from the fire, only for Nicholas to bring it closer. She could smell her own skin burning and it almost made her gag. Getting bored with the slow torture, Nicholas set the candle down again and instead grabbed her arm. Teary eyed, she looked at her brother, wondering what twisted thoughts were going through his head now when he suddenly bent her arm completely backwards until a loud snap echoed throughout the room followed by Katrina's screaming.
Katrina woke with a start, shooting up in bed, her hand instantly going to her left arm. She thumbed the old scar of when Nicholas had broken her arm and forced the bone through the skin. She remembered screaming so loud that Clark had come to see what was going on. It was one of the only times Clark had yelled at Nicholas because their game had to be put on hold until she healed. She remembered looking into her brother's eyes and seeing nothing. No remorse or guilt for what he did, only twisted glee. Even while being scolded he had looked like the cat who'd eaten the canary. Those eyes still haunted her dreams even this far away from them.
"Kat! Captain wants you above deck with him, Bepo, and Jambarl!"
Penguin's voice shouted from the other side of her door as he banged on it. Katrina shifted her gaze from her arm to her stomach, despite knowing the only thing she'd see was the scar there. Trying her best to shake the last of her nightmare off, she called back that she'd be right there.
Throwing the covers back, Katrina grabbed a pair of shorts and a top from her dresser before walking into the bathroom and splashing some cold water on her face. She took a moment to stare at her reflection in the mirror and frowned. Her nightmares were making it difficult for her to sleep throughout the night and the result was starting to give her dark circles around her eyes that almost matched her Captain's.
"Kat!"
Penguin called again, pulling Katrina away from her thoughts and she left, heading up the stairs and out onto the deck of the sub without saying anything in response to Penguin's second summons. She blinked a few times in an attempt to let her eyes adjust to the sudden difference in lighting before taking a look around. Bepo, Jambarl, and Law stood towards one end of the deck. Walking over to join them, Katrina stopped when she stood beside Law as he called up to a pirate currently floating in the air carrying what looked like a whale-shark fishman and Straw Hat. Katrina didn't bother to wonder how it was that the pirate with a clown-like nose was floating since she really didn't care.
"I'm gonna take him away from this place! Let me take care of him for now!"
Law shouted up to the red-nosed man. It didn't look like he was too keen on the idea of handing them over.
"I'm a doctor!"
Law told him and Katrina started to question why exactly her captain wanted her up here. All that was happening was him shouting at a random pirate and her starting to get a headache from the sounds of fighting offshore. She tuned out the conversation between her captain and the pirate and looked around at the chaos that had encompassed Marineford. The fighting was still going on even now and she couldn't make heads or tails of which side could possibly be winning or losing. She recalled Bepo telling her the Marines intended to execute Ace and she knew that was probably what started the war between the Whitebeard Pirates she saw scattered everywhere on the giant ice-field and the Marines. She'd only briefly met Straw Hat back on the archipelago and she knew he was her friend's captain. But what business did he have being here? Where was Raindra and the other Strawhats? Was he alone?
Cannonballs suddenly came flying towards them and Katrina turned her attention back to Law and the others. Law was still trying to convince the clown-faced pirate to quickly hand over Straw Hat and the fishman only to be met with repeated refusal. Katrina felt her control snap after a cannonball got dangerously close to the sub and she could feel the mist of the ocean from it landing in the water.
"Hey, red-nose!"
Katrina shouted, gaining the attention of who she wanted, ignoring him when he started shouting about killing her flashily for calling him red-nose.
"You only have one option. Either hand over those two to my captain so he can save their lives or the next thin' that'll fall in the ocean will be you."
She threatened, effortlessly spinning one of her daggers between her forefinger and ring finger while keeping eye contact with the clown. She smiled when she saw the color drained from his face before he tossed both towards them. Bepo and Jambarl caught them both before they could hit the deck. She heard Law give the order to dive before she saw a bright light. Looking to see where it was coming from Katrina realized one of the Admirals was preparing to fire at them.
"Law!"
She shouted, cringing slightly as doing so made her head hurt that much worse. Hell of a time for her headache to turn into a migraine.
"Damn it!"
Law cursed before running over towards her. When he wrapped his arm around her waist Katrina froze, unsure what he was doing, until he started herding her towards the inside of the sub but stopped when a voice called out, effectively making everyone else stop as well all throughout Marineford. A single voice cried out for the stop of all this violence.
"A Marine?"
Katrina asked in surprise when she could make out the young pink-haired Marine.
"Stop already! All this fighting, just end it!"
The young man shouted and Katrina could hear the pain in his voice. She could only guess what seeing so many of his comrades needlessly slaughtered did to him. The battlefield was one unrelenting place and if you weren't prepared it could destroy even the strongest of men.
"Kid's gonna get himself killed."
Katrina said as she unconsciously took a step closer to try and see better only to get pulled back against her captain's chest, his arms wrapped tightly around her waist, preventing her from going anywhere.
"Law."
Katrina whined as she tried to wriggle out of his hold. He wouldn't relent and the brunette signed as she tried to see from where she was since her captain apparently didn't want her going too far. She wanted to know if the young Marine was going to die and if so by whose hands?
"Look."
Law said making Katrina turn to look at him briefly before looking back towards the pink-haired Marine only to gasp in surprise. Red-haired Shanks had appeared seemingly out of thin air and had stopped one of the Admirals from killing that young Marine.
"Cast off!"
Law shouted before Katrina felt him pulling her towards the door of the sub, but Katrina couldn't take her eyes off the dark haired Admiral. Suddenly feeling herself stop the brunette tore her gaze from the shoreline to look back at Law. He had stopped just at the door and was looking back towards Shanks.
"Law?"
Katrina asked as she looked up at her captain's face as he kept his eyes on what was going on onshore. She placed her hand over Law's since his arms were still around her waist and felt him tense beneath her touch before slowly relaxing, his eyes turning from the shoreline to meet hers briefly before returning to witness this moment in history.
"We need to close the doors! Come on!"
Bepo shouted and Katrina could only shrug. He knew as well as she did that she couldn't make Law do anything he didn't want to do.
"Please!"
Bepo cried desperately and Law finally relented. Just as he was turning a voice called out catching Katrina's attention. It was the clown-faced pirate from before, he had thrown something towards them.
"What the…?"
Katrina questioned as she held out her arms and caught whatever it was he'd thrown.
"A straw hat?"
She wondered before Bepo cried out again for them to come inside.
"Captain! Kat!"
Katrina allowed Law to lead her inside, holding the hat close to her chest as she hugged the wall as everyone moved through the narrow hallway leading to the outside and Bepo closed the outer hatch. However, even inside things were chaotic.
"ER Rooms one and two are ready for you Captain!"
Shachi called as he rushed down the hall towards the infirmary and operation rooms. Katrina watched as Law handed his nodachi to Bepo before making his way towards the operating rooms. Katrina didn't exactly feel like watching Law operate on Luffy and the fishman she'd seen earlier, if anything she felt like watching the back of her eyelids and she hoped the sleeping medication she remembered seeing in the infirmary last time she'd been there was still there. She was getting some sleep, one way or another.
