Prologue
Mutants.
Muggles have known about mutants for years now- decades, even. Some marvel at them, many are wary of them, and a select few love them and wish them well.
There are dozens of news stories about mutants. Conspiracy theories ranging anywhere from believing the mutants to be aliens taking refuge on Earth and merely pretending to be born from humans, to claiming that they are running the world from behind-the-scenes; fanatical groups popping up on one side or the other, paranoia is on the rise...
Unfortunately, the wizarding world didn't get the memo. While many muggleborns and half bloods are aware of the existence of mutants, it is thought to be "a muggle problem, and a rare one at that" and therefore unlikely to affect their own lives in any significant way.
They were wrong, of course. For wizards are every bit as human as muggles, much as some of them like to think otherwise, and are descended from the same gene-pool.
"Mutants within the world of wizards have existed throughout our history.
However, many mutants tend to have unassuming powers, and many mutant abilities tend to line up with various magical phenomena.
Most wizarding mutants of the past were unaware that their abilities were out-of-the-norm, and they were either hailed as a "prodigy"
in a particular area of magic, or simply considered a bit odd by their peers.
If they displayed a physical mutation, they were often considered "magical freaks of nature" and hidden by their parents,
until they were able to apply a glamour and control their abilities well enough to hide their differences.
As a result, wizarding mutants have gone mostly unnoticed until now, and managed to live relatively unpersecuted lives. In fact, this
has allowed the normal-wizard/mutant-wizard population ratio to become much higher than the muggle/mutant population,
though the number of "normals" still dominates the number of mutants by a landslide. . . ."

This is the story of how the wizarding world came to know about mutants, and the lives whose trajectories were forever altered by that revelation.
Author's Note:
Hey, Isti-Tanu here! This is my first time putting fanfiction on an actual fanfic site; I've written a few things that could be considered fanfic before, but I finally got an idea that I actually want to post somewhere. :)
I've looked around quite a bit, and I've noticed that while there are many (many, many, MANY) Harry Potter crossovers out there... Most of them are either A. Characters from show _ go to Hogwarts, B. Characters from _ meet characters from Hogwarts and go on adventures, C. Harry winds up in _ universe and wreaks havoc, D. Harry Potter is replaced by characters from _, or E. It's a series of multifandom oneshots and Harry is only in one or two of them. This is consistent all across the board.
On the X-Men side of things... Most X-Men crossover fanfiction is A. Characters from *insertfandom* meet the X-Men and shenanigans ensue, or B. Character from *insertfandom* gets mistaken for a mutant. Which, there's nothing wrong with the "mistaken for a mutant" storyline, but honestly? Most of the time when I go looking for X-Men crossover fic... I want to see what various characters would be like if they are a mutant, not just if the X-Men arbitrarily think they are.
And that's the other tendency I wanted to change in this fic- even in cases where one of the characters from *insertfandom* is actually a mutant themselves, it will generally be only one, maaaybe two of the characters, who turns out to be a mutant. Which might line up better with the actual likelihood of several characters from the same franchise being mutants, what with the canonical percentage of the ratio between mutants and normal humans in-universe... but it's more fun when you have multiple character interactions!
So that's where this fic comes in; I wanted to write a HP/XM crossover, in which several of the principal characters are mutants, rather than just one. :)
On that note, I feel that I should mention- while the X-Men side of this is technically X-Men:Evolution, to some degree it's kind of a mesh between Evolution and Movieverse, in that the existence of mutants has been known since the 60's or so, but they were so few and far between that people didn't really take much notice of them until pretty recently; this is my excuse for why the world has known about mutants for a long time, but the events of Evolution still mostly follow canon (though not entirely; I haven't decided whether I want the Apocalypse arc to have happened at this point in time; leaning towards "hasn't happened, won't happen during the course of this fic")
Just FYI... A lot of readers will probably find this strange, but I haven't actually read the Harry Potter books aside from about half of book one, nor have I seen the movies beyond clips that a family member has shown me. I don't personally think it will pose too much of a problem for me, but I wanted readers to be aware of it so they recognize what they're getting into with this fic. :P
BUT, I have read a lot (and I mean a LOT) of HP fanfiction, and I feel that I have a decent enough grasp on the HP world to at least try to write for it. And, I will most likely do plenty of internet research as I write this fic, so I'm not going to just fly in completely blind without at least attempting to get my facts straight.
However, because 98% of my Harry Potter knowledge comes from fanfic, there is definitely a possibility that various characters may be OOC. Feel free to offer advice, but please don't flame me.
