"So, Claire," Christian smirks at her over the campfire earning an eyeroll from Abigail at his tone. Next to her Chris sits up straighter ready to jump to her defence in a moment's notice. Razor looks on unamused while Cobalt and Doc share a concerned look. "Where were you before the Arcadia. Chris said you helped free him from the prison but never where you were before." His obnoxious voice and amusement at his question makes Claire want to smack that smirk off his face.
Chris's eyes widen at the question caught between looking to make sure Claire is alright or punching Chrisitan. It is a long time coming to be fair.
Claire stills in place at his question. She knew it was coming. That eventually someone would ask her about her time before Doc and them rescued her and Chris from the Osprey wreckage. But what can she say to that question. I was attacked by Umbrella and lost all my memories. That the only memories she has of her time before waking up in Alaska under Alice's worried but tender gaze are barely there. That she only remembers snippets of her time in the desert. Alice, K-Mart, Carlos... they are the only people she can vaguely remember. And even then, there's hardly any recollection of her time spent with them.
She knows she trusted Carlos with her life. According to Alice, he was her right hand and in charge of security for the convoy. But Claire couldn't tell you what he looked like. What he sounded like. Couldn't tell you if he was witty, charming, arrogant or kind. She remembers nothing about him. The only memory she has of him is him driving to his death sacrificing himself so the convoy could escape to Alaska.
K-Mart she has more gradual memories of. The young blonde teen was a mixture of a daughter and a little sister to her. She knows K was the one to convince her to allow Alice to stay with them. How she used her best puppy eyes to get Claire to agree to give Alice a test run with the group. How she cheered and ran off right away to tell Alice the good news. How K hated that she smoked. How she loved to read. How she completely idolised Alice from the moment Carlos... or was LJ... when one of the two men from Alice's original group spoke of the former umbrella soldier.
Alice... she remembers meeting Alice. A feeling of dread and excitement raging inside of her at the power the woman held. Remembers how Alice in herself was a contradiction. Someone who was so guarded but open at the same time. How Alice with a blade in her hand was the most dangerous entity she has ever witnessed. How she moved with such ease in fights. How her heart used to race when Alice would offer her a rare smile after a good raid or causal conversations of the fire.
When Alice found her in Alaska the woman answered whatever questions about the two of them Claire could think of. Even without her memory, she could tell that Alice wasn't this forthcoming with information about herself as was with Claire. That the way Alice looked at her wasn't like how she looked at other people. How when they were in the prison Alice gave her the keys to the plane and told her if something went wrong to leave. With or without her.
Claire quickly understood that Alice was in love with her. Or at least the old version of Claire. It was clear in the way she spoke to her. With more softness and openness. How Alice always kept her informed of everything. Her worries and suspicions. How Alice would sneak extra food onto her plate. How she constantly checked on her and reassured her everything would be ok. How when arguments broke out Alice would always shift closer to her ready to act as a shield if need be. How Claire was the only one she would smile and laugh with. Who she would let her guard down with.
It was easy. It was so easy to start to develop feelings for Alice. How could she not. And Claire wasn't stupid or blind she knew that she wasn't the only one to fall for Alice's charm and beauty. Luthor trailed after her like a love sick fool. But it wasn't him who Alice would hold at night.
No, that pleasure belonged to her. It was during their first night at the prison and she had her first concrete memory return of her and Alice. It was well into the night when she stumbled into Alice's cell waking her up in the process and getting to understand her own memory of the event. After Alice confirmed it and soothed her fears about never remembering who she was she asked if she could stay with Alice that night. Not wanting to face the dark and unknown alone. Those few nights the two spent wrapped around each other safely tucked away from everyone else were her greatest comfort in the strange place. It was familiar to her. Like they had done it a hundred times before.
The first time she kissed Alice the dark-haired woman was terrified that she had tricked Claire into doing it. That she was scared Claire imprinted onto her and Alice had made it so Claire felt so isolated that Claire couldn't not be attracted to her. That she was taking advantage of her dubious state. Claire had just told her she remembered them in the desert. That Claire always felt like she couldn't let anyone in. That she had to be the strong unmoveable leader. And then Alice showed up and breathed new life into her. How they found love with each other. Claire might not remember much but she remembered that very well.
The Arcadia was supposed to be their second chance at life. Their chance to start again. With over two thousand people on board, they were ready to stop running. Alice K-Mart and Chris were with her. Her family was reunited and complete. It seemed like everything had finally fallen into place.
That idolization of hope that began to grow within the four of them lasted all of ten minutes. Then they were dodging bullets and missiles as Umbrella once again came to ruin their peace. Dozens of ospreys came soaring towards them raining hell and destruction down upon them. During the chaos, she had lost sight of Alice and K-Mart.
She and Chris were captured and hauled into an osprey and taken away until they managed to break free and cause it to crash. But she never found out what happened to Alice or K-Mart. And now she fears she never will. They could be captured or dead. Their bodies could be sinking to the bottom of the ocean where no one would ever find them again.
A part of her still believes there are out there still. That Alice is looking after K-Mart as she once again starts the journey of trying to track her down. She's done it before. Alice found her in the never-ending sands of the desert. Located her out in the vast wilderness of Alaska. Stumbled upon Chris in a run down prison in L.A and found K-Mart in the open waters the Umbrella ship sailed. Alice is good at finding people. So, if anyone could track her down it would be Alice. And that hope. That little bit of hope is what she clings to.
Everyone was watching her. Waiting with silent interest as to what her answer would be. Claire coughed trying to clear the lump that formed in her throat. "Before the Arcadia, I was part of a group that travelled through the desert."
"What happened to the group." Christian doesn't hesitate to ask. He never has been one for sensitivity.
Cobalt being the closest to him immediately punches him in the stomach while Abigal lectures him. "Why would you ask a question like that you fucking dick."
"What... We all wanted to know." He raises his hands in a surrendering motion. As if that makes the situation any better.
Coldy Claire answers the question before leaving the small group heading towards the edge of the tower to look out over the city. "Umbrella happened. They came attacked, killed and captured every member of my group. My girlfriend and daughter as well. And no I don't know what happened to them."
Behind her, she can hear Chris going on off on him. Abigal backing him while Doc tries to keep the peace. While Razor shakes his disappointment at Christians's action and Cobalt drops her head into her hands in embarrassment.
Standing on top of the tower overlooking the city Alice once called home Claire feels some semblance of Alice floating in the air. Like just being here makes her feel more connected to the woman who swopped in and created a wave of fire incinerating those crows saving everyone in the convoy and earning her respect. Respect that soon turned to love.
She wishes Alice was here right now. She wishes K-mart was here. She wishes she knew if they were alive or dead. Wishes to know if there is anything she could do to be reunited with them. To help them. She wishes for a lot of things. But wishes don't come true. Not anymore. No matter how much you pray or wish for it.
Sighing Claire thinks about what she can do. She can stay here and help this community to grow and flourish. She can wait for news. Any news on Umbrella to see if she could be helpful against them. If she can save Alice and Claire. And she can wait.
Wait for Alice to find her. Because she knows there is no force out there that can stop her lover. Despite her history, Umbrella always seems to underestimate her and she always manages to escape them. Always manages to find her again. It's just a matter of waiting and believing in Alice to look after K-Mart.
"I guess I'm waiting for you again Alice," Claire whispers her words getting lost to the wind. A silly part of her imagines the wind carrying those words out far and wide until they find Alice and then Alice follows them back to her. A silly dream but she dreams it anyways. Being apart from her two girls is torture. She needs them just as much as she needs oxygen to breathe. "Please find me soon."
Unknown to her miles away Alice and K-Mart were getting ready to return to Raccoon City. That soon this nightmare for all of them would all be over.
