There were many times in Kaia's life where she found herself overwhelmed by fear. The first few days of being on this island—when the Hunter had chased her down—when Lloyd, who was now not just her best friend but her adopted brother, had come rushing after her—the list could go on. But this, this was different. For now it was her brother in danger. Her brother!
She didn't even know how it happened. One moment she was simply talking to Lloyd, and the next moment, he was leaning against the wall, hyperventilating like crazy, beads of cold, clear sweat forming on his forehead, all before he suddenly collapsed in a heap on the cave floor.
Kaia's mind burned with fear, with panic, with shock. No-no-no-no-no! This can't be happening! THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING! She tried to speak, but her stinging throat felt choked up from fright. And then a heartrending cry burst out of her without warning.
"LLOYD!"
She all but flew over to the Green Ninja lying unconscious on the floor of the cave. Her tiny hands shook convulsively as she gazed on his pale, sweaty face. Hot tears streamed down her cheeks as she rolled him onto his back and shook his body vigorously, trying desperately to wake him up, softly pleading all the while, "No! Lloyd! Please don't be sick. Please don't be sick!" But there was no response, no movement, no sign that he heard. Her heart sank as the reality that her hopes were in vain came crashing in on her.
Yet how could she have known that at that very moment, the realm of Chima was crying out against the power of the Night CHI?
And how could she have known that Lloyd's present condition stemmed directly from that cry?
Her hand brushed against Lloyd's wrist, and she suddenly gasped at the painful chill that emanated from it. He was so cold…so very, very cold. If she hadn't felt his pulse throbbing underneath the back of her hand, she would have thought that he was—that he was—she didn't even want to think about that.
And then she realized that she was the only one who could help him.
She wrapped her small, thin arms around his waist and crawled across the cave floor, dragging his unconscious form over closer to the campfire and close to where Toothless lay watching her. As if he suddenly realized the situation, he stretched his body out to where Kaia could lay Lloyd's head on Toothless's side. Then the young girl sprang up and raced over to where she'd found the firewood and a few other supplies that seemed to signify that this had once been someone's hideout. There in the back of the cave were a pile of furs, an empty lantern, a small piece of flint, a leather belt, a short dagger, and a small hatchet for cutting wood.
The fire was giving plenty of light and she didn't know how to chop wood safely, so Kaia let the flint, hatchet, and lantern be. She first wrapped the belt—which was not exactly her size but would come in handy—twice around her waist, tying the ends in the back so it wouldn't come undone. Then she stuck the dagger into the belt blade-side-down on her hip—just in case she needed it. Finally, she grabbed as many furs as she could carry in her arms in one trip and rushed them over to where Lloyd lay. She piled a few of the furs on him to keep him warm and stoked the fire shortly afterward for good measure—before turning her attention to her knees, which were scraped, dirty, and slightly bleeding from crawling across the hard cave floor. Toothless seemed to recognize that he couldn't use his plasmablasts without moving and hurting Lloyd, so he simply lay still.
The next few days were a blur as Kaia did all she could to help Lloyd. When he shook violently with cold, she piled more furs on him and added more wood to the fire. Since she wasn't affected by the cold of the snowstorm, she peeled damp bark off of birch trees and fashioned it into makeshift cups, from which she got warm rabbit broth into the feverish Lloyd in the few scattered times he was awake. She stayed up countless hours to watch over him, desperately fighting off her own fatigue and exhaustion.
But despite all her best efforts, he kept on getting worse. His fever was steadily rising, and delirium was beginning to set in. Kaia could hear him moaning in his sleep as he twitched and convulsed with not just cold but pain so excruciating that when she just faintly brushed his arm, he cried out. In one of the few times he was awake, she was suddenly startled by him looking up at her with milky, unseeing eyes and softly moaning, "Ha…ru…mi." The barely audible name seemed so familiar to her—could it be a name from her forgotten past, perhaps?—but she shook her thoughts away as she silently begged for him to fight this, to be healed from this illness that had struck so suddenly and unexpectedly.
On the fifth day after Lloyd had fallen ill, matters started taking a turn for the worst. The Green Ninja writhed and convulsed constantly, shivering with intense cold though his skin was burning to the touch and his face flushed with fever. Kaia herself teetered dangerously close to uncontrollable panic as the wind howled mournfully outside. As Kaia trembled with fright, biting her lip frantically, the only sounds that could be heard were the sound of the storm outside, the crackling of the fire, and Lloyd softly moaning, "No, stop—I can't—come back—I need you."
And then, all the stress and anxiety and exhaustion of the past few days reached the tipping point.
"AAAAAAAUUUUUUGGGGGGHHHHH!" Toothless let out a pained snarl and attempted to cover his ears as young Kaia let out a sharp, raw scream. "I JUST CAN'T! I CAN'T DO THIS ALONE ANYMORE!" The poor worn-out girl then ran over to a cave wall where she buried her face in her arms and sobbed profusely. Behind her, Toothless uncovered his ears and let out a sorrowful, sympathetic growl.
Then, as her sobs subsided, Kaia realized that there was only one thing she could do now. No matter what might happen to her, she had to get help for Lloyd. "Toothless," she exclaimed, turning to the big black dragon. He moaned in confusion. "I need you to watch over Lloyd for me." she commanded. "I'm going for help. I don't know how I'll find it, but I have to do it—for Lloyd."
With that, she ran over to the cave's entrance. There she paused and looked back at Lloyd lying there, helpless and ill. "Hang on, Lloyd." she whispered. "Nothing's going to take you from me—I promise."
And with that, she ran out headlong into the swirling storm.
