This takes place two weeks after the last one-shot. Inspired by Vikings season 2 battle against Yarl Borg.
Nuffink goes into his first battle with his parents by his side.
They took time to grieve their lost child, though at times it felt like they couldn't properly grieve amid an ongoing battle. Hiccup tried his best to be there for her but had other duties to his fellow warriors and Dagur. It was Nuffink who spent most days by his mother's side. He wouldn't give her a choice. On the days when she spiraled into anger, he sat behind her watching over her just like he did during that fateful day. Sometimes he held her as she cried.
He thanked the Gods for the small mercy of not having to go into battle during the whole ordeal. Two weeks passed and it was finally time to confront them. The rival chieftain Cnut has picked off several Berserker scouts and hunting parties. Dagur was getting more and more frustrated at the cowardly display.
Dagur proposed to meet them in the valley. From a scouting report, that's where their encampment was. They could take them by surprise.
Nuffink sat in front of Astrid. Around them, the others prepared for battle. She was braiding the sides of his head similarly to her own. Even though he was twenty, he didn't think his mother would ever stop braiding his hair. It was a ritual that relaxed them both and helped them focus.
"Are you nervous my son?"
"No. I've trained my whole life for battle. We'll see if you've done a good job training me."
Astrid scoffed at his teasing remark. "Me and your father will do everything we can to watch over you."
"And I will be doing the same."
She padded his cheek as soon as she finished his hair.
They left the tent to meet up with Hiccup. He was already prepared, his sword holstered to his side, and talking to Snotlout.
"Are we about ready to head out?" Astrid asked as soon as she approached the two.
"Yes. Are you two ready?" Hiccup asked. He examined Nuffink mostly. He tugged on his leather chest plate over his red tunic, making sure it was tight enough. He squeezed his biceps and vambraces.
Astrid could see the worry in his eyes. "He's ready Hiccup."
Hiccup sighed deeply, "I know, get him a shield though."
Nuffink screwed up his face like he smelled something funny. "A shield? I don't need a shield."
"Don't be stupid, you're not a Berserker nor are you a capable enough fighter yet." Hiccup scolded him.
Snotlout picked up his shield. "Let this be your first lesson Fin. Arrogance in your fighting leads you to underestimate your foe. That's how you die."
Nuffink nodded, conceding.
Once everyone was ready they began their march down to the valley. About sixty of them in total should be enough to dispel Cnut's invasion force. It didn't take long for their enemy to notice them. They scrambled to arm themselves and get into a formation across from them.
Nuffink peered down the line to see where his mother stood four warriors down from him. Snotlout was next to her. On Nuffink's other side was his Uncle Osvif. Hiccup and Dagur were both in the back.
He took a deep breath and adjusted his grip on his single-bladed axe. It was Dagur's voice that broke the silence as he yelled to charge.
The two sides collided with each other. Shields bashed against shields as each side tempted to slash at each other. The warriors from the back kept pushing forward.
Nuffink's axe met the first opening he saw. He kept his shield in front of him repelling any attack. It was tight, he almost had no choice but to fight using his shield and leave the stabbing to his tribesmen behind him.
As more Vikings fell, Nuffink got more breathing room to fight properly. He let his instincts take over, blocking and cutting his way through the line. He kicked a shield-maiden to the ground, letting someone else finish her off. He wished he could see how his parents were fairing. He trusted that they would be okay. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Osvif take out two with one swing from his axe.
He smiled, seeing his fellow Vikings converge around him and pushing forward. He pushed ahead with renewed vigor, wanting to be the first to reach the other side.
Astrid was fairing just as expected. She wasn't called the greatest shield-maiden in and around the Barbaric Archipelago for nothing. She swung down to cut the enemy in the back. Another came up ready to swing his sword at her. She tried to correct her momentum to bring the handle of her axe up to block it. She didn't have to when a shield flashed across her, deflecting the sword.
Astrid glanced to her left to see Snotlout. He brought his hammer down to bash his skull through his helmet. She nodded her head in thanks.
Hiccup was in the back with Dagur, both of them watching Cnut direct his men. Occasionally some of his warriors would break through and the two of them would dispatch them quickly.
Cnut was on the move, strolling across his line, his eyes never leaving Dagur's. He mirrored his position. Hiccup eyed the display wearily, he had a feeling Cnut was up to something. A horn sounded and several of his men that were in the back regrouped to the side.
Hiccup's eyes widened. "Brace! Brace! Stay on your feet!" He yelled.
The horn sounded again and the newly formed group charged straight through the left side. Their tightly compacted lines were no more. The charge knocked several of his men off their feet. Hiccup knew that Nuffink was on that side. A flash of red flailing on the ground had him running.
He slashed another enemy in his way. Somehow but always he found Astrid's blue eyes in the middle of battle. He was able to communicate with his eyes what had transpired. Astrid's eyes widened as she quickened her urgency to get over there.
One moment he was attacking a smaller man with his axe and the next Nuffink found himself on the ground gasping for breath.
His axe and shield both flew from his grasp. Vikings ran past him to press on the advantage. He closed his eyes for a split second trying to catch his breath.
He could feel predatory stares on him as an easy target. He felt around the near vicinity for something anything that he could use to defend himself.
A Viking laughed cruelly, pointing the tip of his sword at him to as if mark him for death.
"Get up!"
An achingly familiar voice shouted at him. He scrambled on his hands and feet not taking his eyes off of the man who wanted to kill him.
They appeared out of nowhere like the Gods themselves summoned them. His father exploded out of a group of men and blocked the Viking who was poised to kill him, slicing his chest open.
His mother was on his other side, fighting off those coming on his left.
Hiccup yelled at him again, "Get up!"
The voice shocked his system, he was able to locate his axe just in time to block a sword with the shaft of it. Kicking him in the stomach stunned him long enough for him to get on one knee. He twisted the man's arm and he fell to the ground where Nuffink finished him off. He killed another in quick succession.
He was finally able to catch his breath. The battle was slowing down as his side was winning. Astrid took stock of him, making sure he wasn't injured. Nuffink tilted his chin up to gesture to a Viking coming her way. She spun her axe around and cut him down with one swing.
Cnut's forces were splintering. Hiccup pressed on trying to find Cnut and end this. Finally, he spotted his way away, using his men to cover his path. Hiccup dropped his shield to gain more speed.
Dagur saw Hiccup advancing on Cnut. "Hiccup!" He kicked a woman to the ground as he slashed open another's stomach. "I'm with you brother!" His berserker laugh was unmistakable. He quickened his pace trying to reach Hiccup.
Cnut knew when to cut his losses, as he saw Hiccup and Dagur both gaining on him. His men tried their best to fend them off but Hiccup and Dagur continued their pursuit. Hiccup wasn't wasting any time.
Dagur grabbed a smaller axe that was lying on the ground, throwing it straight into the chest of a warrior before he was able to get to Hiccup. "Hiccup!"
Hiccup blocked a spear shaft with his hand on his head. It still hurt but he lessened the blow well enough. Grabbing the spear, he tugged it from the enemy's grasp. He slipped his sword into his gut as he stumbled toward him.
Another Viking swung the butt of a spear at his face, this time he wasn't so lucky. It cracked across his jaw, sending him to the ground with a groan. Someone jumped over him to tackle the enemy who hit him. It was Dagur who then took an axe and whacked him in the stomach.
Most of the warriors retreated now including Cnut. Dagur's eyes connected with his as he stared him down and Cnut paused in his retreat. Dagur took this as his only chance, throwing the axe in his hand with all of his might. It sailed true and Cnut's eyes widened. A fleeing Viking suddenly ran in front, unwittingly taking the axe in his back. The chieftain was lost in the fleeing bodies. Out of range now, he fumbled onto a horse and rode out.
Dagur growled in frustration but he knew it was going to take a while before he would see Cnut again. His forces were decimated, and that is if he would decide to try to pick a fight with him again. He reached down to give a hand to Hiccup. He was slightly dazed from the hit, his mouth bloody.
He spat on the ground, "Did you get him?"
"No, it was only him and several of his men left. Fled south most likely to their boats."
"I doubt he'll come back and if he does, you know who to call."
Dagur placed a hand on his shoulder, shaking him a little. "That I do brother."
Snotlout, Astrid, Nuffink, and Osvif gathered with the two leaders.
"How many dead?" Hiccup asked Osvif since he was the leader of the Berk Gaurd.
"Ten. Fifteen injured."
"Did you get the guy?" Snotlout asked.
Hiccup shook his head, "No, another time."
Osvif slapped Nuffink on the back. "You fought well today Fin."
"Thank you, Uncle." He huffed, he was the most out of breath, not used to the endurance of battle.
Astrid pushed his right cheek so his temple met her forehead as they stood next to each other. "You still have much to learn but you made me and your father proud today."
Hiccup fussed over him. Grabbing Nuffink by the nape of his neck to haul him over so he could wrap an arm around his neck to squeeze him to his body. Even though Nuffink may have a slight advantage in muscle mass, Hiccup was still a few inches taller. "Be happy he's in one piece. We all know I lost my leg in my first one."
"Never say never." Nuffink chuckled.
Astrid punched him in the shoulder. "Don't even joke about that."
The others laughed.
