Sakura smiled at Kakashi when he returned from his mission. "Hello, Kakashi." she greeted. She led the man to the couch and started toweling off the sweat and grime from his mission.
"Sakura." he greeted back. It sounded normal but to Sakura's ears it sounded... cold.
As Sakura continued to clean Kakashi, she couldn't help but sense a certain distance in his demeanor. His usual warmth seemed replaced by a subtle detachment that left her feeling uneasy.
"Is everything okay, Kakashi?" Sakura asked, her concern evident in her eyes.
Kakashi sighed, his gaze fixed on a distant point. "I need to talk to you, Sakura. About us."
Sakura's heart skipped a beat, a sense of foreboding settling in her chest. She nodded, urging him to continue.
"I've been thinking a lot, Sakura. About our relationship," Kakashi began, his words measured. "I've realized that I can't give you what you truly deserve."
Sakura furrowed her brows, a mixture of confusion and anxiety clouding her features. "What do you mean?"
Kakashi looked into Sakura's eyes, his own revealing a conflict within. "You deserve someone who can give you the life you want. Marriage, a family... things I can't provide."
Sakura's heart sank, the weight of his words pressing down on her. She felt a lump forming in her throat as she struggled to comprehend the sudden shift in their relationship.
"Kakashi, what are you saying?" Sakura whispered; her voice barely audible.
Kakashi took a deep breath, as if preparing himself for what he was about to say. "I think we should end our relationship, Sakura. It's not fair to you to be tied to someone like me."
The words hung in the air, and Sakura felt the room closing in on her. The reality of their situation struck her with a painful clarity. She had known the challenges they faced, but the possibility of Kakashi ending their relationship had never truly crossed her mind.
"End it?" Sakura repeated, her voice shaky. "But Kakashi, I... I love you. I thought we could face anything together."
Kakashi's gaze softened, a hint of sadness in his eyes. "Sakura, love isn't always enough. We both deserve a chance at happiness, even if it means going separate ways."
Sakura's hands trembled as she processed Kakashi's words. The dreams she had harbored, the moments they shared, all seemed to crumble before her. She had been prepared to accept the challenges, to navigate the complexities of their unconventional relationship, but the prospect of losing Kakashi left her feeling adrift.
"Is that what you really want?" Sakura heard herself asking him.
"Yes."
That single word of affirmation from him is enough to crush her heart to pieces. She closed her eyes tightly as she felt the burn of unshed tears hurt her eyes. She took a shuddering breath before speaking.
"If I walk out that door, will you be happy?" she asked.
"Yes."
She nodded. Her tears now flowing freely. "Okay. I... I'll just pack some of my things. I'll send a genin team here for the others once I settled on a new place."
The room fell into a heavy silence as Sakura processed the harsh reality of Kakashi's decision. She stood up, her movements robotic, and walked towards their shared bedroom to gather her belongings. Kakashi watched her, his expression unreadable, as the weight of his choice settled upon them both.
As Sakura packed her things, memories of the moments they shared flashed before her eyes – the laughter, the warmth, the challenges they faced together. The pain of losing it all intensified with each item she placed into her bag.
Once she was done, Sakura walked back into the living room, her gaze focused on the floor. She didn't trust herself to look into Kakashi's eyes, afraid that the vulnerability in her own would betray the pain she felt.
Kakashi stood there, his posture stiff, as if bracing himself for the inevitable. "Sakura, I..." he started, but his words trailed off. The weight of the situation seemed to choke the words in his throat.
Sakura shook her head, her voice barely above a whisper. "Don't. There's nothing left to say."
She walked past him, and just as she reached the door, Kakashi's hand gripped her arm gently. "Sakura, I'm sorry," he uttered, his voice heavy with remorse.
She pulled away, avoiding his touch. "Sorry won't change anything, Kakashi. Goodbye."
With that, Sakura left the home they once shared, closing the door behind her. The echoes of their laughter, the warmth of their shared moments, and the love that once filled the space lingered, now suffused with an overwhelming sense of loss.
As Sakura navigated the path to her new beginning, she couldn't escape the lingering ache in her heart. The weight of unspoken words and shattered dreams weighed heavily on her shoulders. The bond she had cherished with Kakashi, built on shared joys and shared pain, now lay fractured.
Sakura asked to have some time off from the hospital and her duties to pick up the broken pieces of her life. She would venture out of her new home in the morning, avoiding all the places that would remind her of him. The gossips followed her, but she ignored them.
But at night, all the pretentions of strong facade crack and crumble. She would often cry herself to sleep, clutching the front of her shirt to quell the burning pain that threatened to incapacitate her.
Until she just refused to go out. She holed up in her tiny apartment, wallowing in pain. No one heard from her or saw her.
Weeks turned into months, and Sakura's withdrawal from the world became more pronounced. Her friends and colleagues grew increasingly concerned about her well-being as rumors of her heartbreak circulated. Ino, who had initially respected Sakura's need for solitude, couldn't bear to see her friend suffer alone.
One evening, Ino gathered the courage to visit Sakura's apartment. The knocks on the door echoed in the quiet hallway, and when there was no response, Ino grew more anxious. With a deep breath, she decided to unlock the door with her spare key, her worry outweighing any concern for privacy.
As Ino stepped into Sakura's dimly lit apartment, she was met with a somber atmosphere. The air was heavy with the scent of neglect, and the room seemed to reflect Sakura's emotional turmoil. Ino cautiously made her way to Sakura's bedroom, where she found her friend curled up on the bed, surrounded by hundreds of bottles.
"Sakura." she shook her. But no response. "Sakura."
Medical training kicked in when Sakura still didn't respond. Ino checked her pallor, her breathing, and the flow of her chakra. When it became apparent that Sakura is not just simply sleeping or passed out from the alcohol, she tried to carefully heave her from the bed. But unlike Sakura, Ino didn't have her strength and chakra-laced limbs can only do so much.
"Help!" Ino shouted, sticking her head to the open window. "Please, I need help!"
Ino's desperate call for help echoed through the quiet neighborhood. Soon, a few neighbors gathered outside Sakura's apartment, drawn by the urgency in Ino's voice. Kakashi, who happened to be wandering the village heard Ino's call. He immediately run towards the blond.
"Hey, what happened?" Kakashi asked.
Ino, panic evident in her eyes, quickly briefed Kakashi on the situation. "Kakashi, it's Sakura. She's in a bad state. I found her like this, and she won't wake up. We need to get her to the hospital."
Without a moment's hesitation, Kakashi followed Ino into Sakura's apartment. The sight of Sakura, surrounded by empty bottles and lying unresponsive, struck a chord of concern in Kakashi's heart. He knelt beside Ino, his eyes scanning Sakura's pale face.
"We need to get her to the hospital immediately," Kakashi said, his usually calm demeanor replaced by urgency.
Ino nodded, her voice strained with worry. "I tried to wake her up, but she won't respond. I can't carry her on my own."
"I'll carry her." Kakashi said, carefully pulling Sakura out of the bed.
Kakashi cradled Sakura in his arms, his normally stoic expression reflecting the gravity of the situation. Ino led the way as they rushed Sakura to the hospital, the small group of concerned neighbors following behind.
Once they arrived at the medical facility, Sakura was swiftly taken into the care of the medical team. Kakashi and Ino waited anxiously in the hospital corridor, their minds consumed with worry for their friend.
After what felt like an eternity, a doctor emerged from the room where Sakura was being treated. Both Ino and Kakashi approached, their expressions a mix of anxiety and anticipation.
"How is she?" Ino asked, her voice strained.
The doctor sighed, glancing between Kakashi and Ino. "Sakura is experiencing alcohol poisoning. She had too much alcohol in her system. Good thing you found her, any later and she'll be dead."
Kakashi's eyes widened at the severity of the situation. He had known Sakura was struggling, but he hadn't realized the extent of her pain.
"What can we do?" Kakashi asked, his voice urgent.
The doctor looked at them sternly. "Right now, she needs medical attention to stabilize her. We'll monitor her closely. But, beyond that, she needs emotional support. It's clear she's going through a difficult time."
Ino nodded, determination in her eyes. "We'll be there for her."
The doctor gave them a stern look. "Make sure you mean it. Emotional well-being is as crucial as physical health in situations like these."
As the doctor left to attend to Sakura, Ino slapped Kakashi. "This is your fault!"
Kakashi winced at Ino's slap, both from the physical impact and the emotional weight of her words. He knew, deep down, that he had played a part in pushing Sakura to this point.
"She gave up everything because she knows that if she didn't, she'll lose you." Ino yelled at the man. "I realized that she's better off without you. Before you came barging into her life, she just wants simple things, you made her want a family. But you won't give it to her. She turned her back to the idea of marriage and children. She turned her back to the idea of family. All because you can't give it to her. And this is what you're going to do?"
Kakashi's normally impassive expression crumbled under the weight of guilt and regret. Ino's words cut through him, laying bare the consequences of his choices. He had convinced himself that keeping Sakura at arm's length was for her own good, but now he faced the stark reality of the pain he had inflicted upon her.
"Ino, I..." Kakashi began, his voice choked with emotion. "I didn't realize it would come to this. I thought I was protecting her."
Ino's anger softened into a mixture of frustration and sadness. "Kakashi, you're not protecting her. You're breaking her. Sakura is strong, but even she has her limits. You can't keep asking her to give up everything for you and then leave her hanging!"
Kakashi's shoulders slumped as the weight of Ino's words bore down on him. He felt the regret and guilt settling deep within, realizing the unintended consequences of his actions. The image of Sakura lying unconscious in the hospital, a result of the pain he had unknowingly inflicted, haunted him.
"I never wanted this for her," Kakashi admitted, his voice filled with remorse. "I care about her deeply, and I thought I was doing what was best. I didn't realize the toll it was taking on her."
"Protecting her? That's your excuse?" Ino asked, frustration is evident in her voice. "You can't tell her that you love her because you're not good at expressing yourself. You won't marry her even though you already married someone in the past because you want to protect her. You won't discuss children and family with her. Is that the way you protect the people you claimed to love? If that is so, I don't see how you're different from an abuser."
Ino's words struck Kakashi like a dagger, and the weight of his decisions bore down on him. He had always considered himself a protector, someone who shielded those he cared about from harm. Yet, in his attempt to protect Sakura, he had become the source of her pain.
"Ino, I never meant to hurt her," Kakashi whispered, his voice laced with remorse. "I thought I was doing what was best, but I see now that I was wrong. I've pushed her to this point, and I can't forgive myself for it."
"Pray to god that she lives, Kakashi. Or else, I'll make you regret hurting my best friend."
Ino's threat hung in the air, a testament to the depth of her concern for Sakura. As they awaited updates on Sakura's condition, Kakashi wrestled with the harsh reality of his actions. The hospital corridor felt suffocating, each passing moment amplifying the weight of guilt on his shoulders.
Hours later, a nurse approached Kakashi and Ino with a solemn expression. "Sakura is stable for now. We've managed to stabilize her and flush the alcohol from her system. She'll wake up soon. Sakura-san is a fighter."
Relief washed over Kakashi and Ino as they heard the news. They were guided to Sakura's room where she lay unconscious, hooked up to various monitors. The sterile hospital room felt heavy with the weight of the recent events.
Ino took a seat beside Sakura's bed, her eyes fixed on her friend's pale face. Kakashi hesitated before pulling up a chair, his gaze filled with a mixture of regret and concern.
As they waited for Sakura to wake up, Ino couldn't shake off the anger that lingered within her. She turned to Kakashi, her expression stern.
"Kakashi, you need to talk to her. This can't go on. You can't keep pushing her away and expect her to be okay. Sakura deserves better than this."
Kakashi nodded, the weight of Ino's words sinking in. "I know. But would she ever forgive me?" he asked. "I keep on hurting her. I keep on saying sorry, but I keep on messing up."
Ino sighed, her frustration evident. "Kakashi, whether she forgives you or not is up to her. But you owe it to Sakura to be honest and open about your feelings. She's been sacrificing too much for you. She deserves your honesty. She deserves clarity and respect."
Kakashi nodded again, a solemn determination in his eyes. As they continued to wait for Sakura to regain consciousness, Kakashi grappled with the realization that his actions had pushed her to such extremes. The image of her lying in that hospital bed served as a stark reminder of the consequences of his choices.
Eventually, Sakura began to stir, her eyelids fluttering open. The room was filled with a tense silence as she slowly became aware of her surroundings. Ino leaned in, her voice gentle yet firm.
"Sakura, you scared us. You can't keep doing this to yourself."
Sakura's gaze shifted between Ino and Kakashi, confusion clouding her eyes. Kakashi took a deep breath, preparing himself to address the difficult conversation that needed to take place.
"Sakura," he began, his voice measured. "I need to talk to you. About us."
Sakura turned her head to him. "You made your point loud and clear, Kakashi. There's nothing left to talk about."
Kakashi sighed, the weight of his decisions heavy on his shoulders. "No, Sakura, there's a lot that needs to be said. I've been selfish, thinking that I was protecting you by keeping my distance. But I see now that I've only been causing you pain."
Sakura remained silent, her eyes fixed on Kakashi as he continued.
"I've been avoiding the topics of marriage, family, and a future together because I was afraid. Afraid of repeating the mistakes of my past, afraid of not being good enough for you. I convinced myself that I was doing it for your sake, but in reality, I've hurt you more than I could imagine."
Ino watched the exchange, her expression a mix of concern and hope. Kakashi's honesty was a step in the right direction, but the damage was already done.
"It's okay, Kakashi." Sakura said. "I've come to terms with it. I shouldn't force myself on you. I just wished you never entered my world in the first place." She honestly said. "I... We wanted different things. I wanted marriage, you wanted casual commitment. I wanted family, you don't. I'm tired trying to give you what you want that I lost myself in the process."
Kakashi's eyes reflected a mixture of regret and realization as Sakura spoke. The room felt heavy with the unspoken pain that lingered between them.
"Sakura, I never wanted to hurt you," Kakashi admitted, his voice low. "But I see now that my fear and reluctance have caused you so much pain. I've been a fool, pushing you away when all you wanted was a future, we both could share." He grasped her hand in his. "Sakura, can you find it in yourself to give me another chance?"
Sakura searched Kakashi's eyes for any deception but found none. She turned her head to Ino, asking for advice.
Ino met Sakura's gaze, her expression a mix of concern and support. "Sakura, it's your decision. Whatever it is that you decide upon, I'm still your best friend. I will support you and will hunt him down if he hurt you."
Sakura took a deep breath, contemplating the tumultuous journey they had been through. The pain, sacrifices, and the recent near tragedy had left scars on their relationship. She looked back at Kakashi, whose eyes were filled with a genuine sincerity she hadn't seen before.
"Kakashi," she started. "why? Why did you broke up with me that night?" she asked. "I need to understand."
Kakashi hesitated for a moment, as if choosing his words carefully. He looked into Sakura's eyes with a sincerity that cut through the lingering tension in the room.
"I heard what you and Ino talked about earlier that day." Kakashi started. "Yes, I was talking with Sai, but I can't help but overhear."
"As I overheard your conversation with Ino, I realized the depth of your sacrifice and the pain it was causing you. Because of my indecision, I forced you to make decisions that you wouldn't normally take. You were settling because that's the only thing I can give." He explained. "So, I thought breaking up with you would solve the problem."
Sakura listened her eyes focused on Kakashi as he bared his soul. The weight of his words hung in the air, and for a moment, the room felt suspended in time.
"You broke up with me because you thought it was the right thing to do for me?" Sakura asked, her voice a mix of confusion and hurt.
Kakashi nodded, his gaze unwavering. "I thought I was sparing you from a future that I couldn't provide. I was convinced that you deserved more, and I didn't want to be the reason you sacrificed your dreams."
Sakura took a moment to process Kakashi's confession. The pieces of their complicated puzzle seemed to fall into place, revealing the depth of his internal struggle. Yet, the pain of their separation still lingered, and Sakura couldn't easily dismiss the hurt she had experienced.
"Kakashi," she began, her voice softening, "you can't make decisions for me. Breaking up without discussing it with me first, without giving me a say in our future, only caused more pain. If we're going to move forward, we need to communicate openly and honestly. No more unilateral decisions."
Kakashi nodded. "Just give me this chance, Sakura, I'm not going to hurt you anymore." he promised. "Just one last, Sakura. Please."
Sakura took a deep breath, a conflicted expression on her face. The gravity of their situation, the scars of their past, and the uncertainty of their future weighed heavily on her shoulders.
"Last chance, Kakashi." Sakura whispered. "This is your last chance."
The hospital room fell into a heavy silence as Sakura's words hung in the air. Kakashi, holding Sakura's hand, nodded solemnly, a mixture of gratitude and determination in his eyes.
Ino watched the exchange, her worry shifting into a cautious hope. She knew the journey ahead wouldn't be easy for Sakura, but the fact that Kakashi had opened up and asked for another chance signaled a potential turning point.
"Sakura," Kakashi said, his voice steady. "I promise you, this time, we'll face everything together. No more running away, no more avoiding the difficult conversations. I want to build a future with you, one that we both can cherish."
Sakura studied Kakashi's eyes, searching for sincerity and commitment. The scars of their past still lingered, but she recognized the genuine effort in his words. She took another deep breath before responding.
"Kakashi, actions speak louder than words. I need to see that commitment and effort in our day-to-day lives. No more avoiding the important discussions, no more keeping me in the dark about your fears. We navigate this together, or not at all."
Kakashi nodded, a solemn agreement passing between them. The weight of their shared history and the challenges ahead lay before them, but there was a subtle sense of hope that they could rebuild what had been fractured.
