"Xander." Willow said a couple of weeks later. "Where's your cast?"
"Doctor took it off. I'm completely healed. He suggested I might be a mutant, because he's sure I healed way faster then I should. He suggest I get tested for the x-gene. How cool would it be if I am a mutant? I might have some ability that would make vamps and demons easier to deal with."
"You think it would be cool to be a mutant?" Willow asked "Even with anti mutant groups and stuff?"
"Things are getting better with those, you don't hear about them much anymore. Of course I'd have to go to the Xavier Institute so I could learn to control whatever my ability is, but that would have to wait until after graduation because I'm not leaving Cordy, not to mention the rest of you. So if I am a mutant, unless I've got some kind of ability that makes me dangerous, I'll just have to figure things out for myself."
'Xander, a mutant?' Willow thought. 'That's not good. He might think it's a fun thing, but I know he could get in trouble. Things might be calm now but they could flare up again. It's best if he never mentions this to anyone.'
"Xander, you can't tell anyone that you might be a mutant." Willow told him, certain she could make him understand that keeping it a secret was for the best.
"Why not? I'm not ashamed of it. Besides, I haven't even had the test yet."
"And you shouldn't have it." Willow insisted. "It's too much of a risk, Xander. Think about this for a minute. This isn't something cool, it's something that could put you at risk and the rest of us with you. If an anti mutant group targets you, the rest of us could get hurt. It's just like with Buffy. Giles said if people find out she's a Slayer, she could be in danger from frightened humans. So could you. No, it's better not to say anything to anyone. We're all safer if you just keep quiet."
"You don't know that, Willow. Especially here in California, it's the most accepting state there is. No, I think I'll go ahead and have the test. I'll make arrangements with the doctor."
Willow couldn't believe it. She'd presented a logical argument and Xander just refused to accept it. 'What is wrong with him? Doesn't he understand I'm trying to keep him and the rest of us safe?'
'Make him listen.' Something whispered in the back of her mind. 'You can make him listen, just concentrate.'
'Make him listen?' Willow thought. 'Yes, that's a good idea. I'll make him listen to me and then I don't have to worry about him or the rest of us. How do I make him listen though?'
'A spell.' The thought whispered across the back of her mind again. 'Use a spell. Use Magic, you proved you could pull Magic when you did the soul curse. You proved you have a gift for it. Use it to make him understand.'
'Yes.' Willow thought. 'That's a good idea too. If I can't make him listen to a logical argument, then I'll have to make him listen.'
'It's for his own good.' The voice whispered again. 'It's for all of our own goods. He's not thinking of us, he's thinking of himself. He's being selfish. Help him to understand that. Or, better yet, make him forget. Forget about the test, about how he may be a mutant.'
'Yes, forgetting about it is best.' Willow decided. Too bad she didn't realize, yet, that she wasn't actually thinking those thoughts.
Xander took a closer look at Willow. She'd been silent for a couple of minutes and he wondered if she really was worried about anti mutant groups. Being Jewish, things like that tended to hit close to home. Then he looked again, for a moment it looked like there was a shadow of something in her eyes and then it was gone. 'Did I see something? Does my maybe mutant ability includes maybe seeing things others can't? Would have come in handy if it had activated during that Der Kinderstadt thing when Buffy was sick with the flu.'
"Xander, listen to me." Willow 'pushed' compulsion into her voice. "Thoughts, beliefs, ideas, truths, images. All of these you hold onto tightly. What I now mention, you will release.* You will forget about the mutant test. You will forget that the doctor told you that you might be a mutant."
Xander eyes flashed for a moment and then he said. "So, since Buffy doesn't seem to be around and vamps still are, I think we need to take up the slack. I've got all that soldier stuff from last Halloween, it should help us."
'It worked.' Willow thought. 'Everything is going to be fine.'
"Okay, as long as we're careful, I don't see any problem with it." Oh irony, thy name is Willow. Vamps and demons hunting is apparently safer then the potential of anti mutant groups.
