NAME: Obeah Man

Obeah Man is a pure DCU villain. I stole him for my story. It helps my AU characters to see Batman while they are training. Ra's al Ghul already knows about Batman. This lets the idea tickle their brain.

ORIGIN:

Obeah Man is a local Haitian who has become disillusioned with the government of Haiti. He is angry and wants to strike back at the powerful white countries. He discovers that he has magic and he explores his abilities. He finds that he can only create small illusions. He decides to use his anger and illusions to kill off rich white men. He gathers a group of men who are also illusioned with Haiti and gets them to follow him.

As he learns more about dark magic and death magic, he contrives a way to enhance his magical ability with death. He decides to use Voodoo to mask his illusions. His two best followers, Malcien and Louis, assist him in making the rich, white man pay for their sins. The three of them contrive a way to kidnap white businessmen on vacation in Haiti. When they receive the money, Obeah Man 'releases' them. Or their soul. The deaths give him power to cast large illusions. This keeps his followers in thrall.

MOTIVATION:

Obeah Man was motivated by greed and power. He frequently used torture and death to get his followers to believe in his powers. He had some small bit of magic. But he was far more knowledgeable about how people work. He could easily sway the malleable minds of his followers into doing his bidding. He used his magic to form illusions to influence the minds of his followers and induced fear in his victims.

PERSONALITY:

Obeah Man has a strong personality. He was very charismatic. He was very convincing and seemed confident in his knowledge. He frequently called upon Baron Samedi and Papa Legba as if those spirits give him his powers. They didn't. It was one way for him to prey upon the minds of his followers. By using his illusions, he gave the appearance of divine influence.

ABILITIES:

Magic: Minor ability. His skill is limited to illusion casting.

Occultism: Focus on Voodoo native to Haiti. He has learned how best to use his illusions to influence the minds of those who believe in the native spiritualism of Voodoo. Thus, he claimed the title of Obeah, or priest, in that culture. He wanted to claim a spiritual connection and power over his followers.

Hand-to-hand Combat: He has gained some minor skill with hand-to-hand combat and with the knife in combat, but relies on surprise as his main tactic. This does poorly against a skilled combatant.

NOTES:

Obeah Man was the DC villain who was responsible for the death of Janet Drake and the coma of Jack Drake (Tim Drake's parents). In my story, I have the League 'clean up' after Batman. Batman leaves with the Drakes and never sees the League come in and ensure the evil of Obeah Man was over. I do this so that Sah-him can see how Batman left the evil of Obeah Man alive to continue to do evil. He also saw how Batman went out of his way to save the evil man from accidental death. This influences how Sah-him saw Batman's actions.
