Law finished the surgery within two hours. He left the room still drying his hands and sat by Rina in the common area. She had been talking to a blond man and a raven-haired woman. The four of them were quiet until the man, whom Law noticed was wearing a Shinigami's uniform inquired, "Rina, is this the outsider you mentioned?"
"Yes. This is Trafalgar Law, he found the abnormalities in Mamoru's brain, and operated on him," she answered.
The dark haired woman seemed to be angry for a moment before asking out loud, "how is it that he found them when nobody else here did? I'd bet he made that up!"
"I have some abilities most don't," Law offered as an expalaination. He couldn't blame her for being upset. Judging by their interactions with Rina, he guessed these were Mamoru's adoptive parents. Of course they'd be upset that their son's AVM and tumor weren't found quicker.
"I can assure you that Law is a highly intelligent man, and a skilled surgeon. When I was off world six years ago, my endometriosis got really bad—it caused an ovarian torsion. It was Law that did my surgery and I've had little pain since. I mean it's getting worse but for right now it's manageable. It's a lot better than it was," she defended Law.
She hesitated before adding, "He's telling the truth. The abilities he speaks of allows him a unique way to operate that let him perform complete medical miracles. Even if someone else had found these abnormalities in Mamoru previously, it's unlikely they would've attempted to operate."
The blond man listened intently and nodded his head before simply stating, "thank you."
Law was unsure of what part he was being thanked for until the man elaborated, "both for helping Mamoru—and for what you did for Rina. I've known her since she was a baby."
Law remained stoic and stated, "She's a friend. Since Mamoru is also her friend I offered to see what I could do."
The man again nodded his head, whether it was to simply acknowledge he heard or to show understanding, Law wasn't certain. He looked to Rina and asked if they could leave. Rina stood up from her seat, bid goodbye to Mamoru's parents and headed out of the fourth squad with Law following her.
Once they were outside Rina stopped short and looked to Law. She grabbed his hand and pulled him in close to her while stating, "This'll be quicker."
Law raised an eyebrow at first before a white ribbon seemed to surround them, and she called out, "home."
Law watched as the white ribbon seemed to surround them, then heard a loud 'pop'. He felt as if he was being blown by a gust of wind that had knocked him off his feet, yet he was still upright. It was certainly an unusual sensation. When it ended the white around them gave away to a lush green country side view with a waterfall, and a small house that he was certain couldn't possibly hold eight or nine bedrooms. He was doubtful if it even held three!
But wading in the pool of water by the waterfall was someone else he recognized from the wanted posters he used to see. He didn't have the hat anymore, or the giant red bead necklace. He still had the tattoo on his upper left bicep, essentially his name with a crossed out S just above the 'c' in his name. The man had his pants rolled up to his knees and was topless, playing in the water with three kids. One was a red haired boy, whom Law assumed was one of Rina's adopted brothers, the youngest one was a girl with pale blonde hair and blue eyes, whom he assumed to be Rina's younger biological sister. The other little girl was the one that took his breath away.
Her dark hair was clinging to her head, her skin was tanned by the sun but it showed no signs of burning. Her honey hued eyes were dancing with playful excitement as she splashed and frolicked in the water with the previously mentioned other participants in play.
Suddenly all three of the children jumped on Ace at once, the boy onto his back while the girls clung to his arms. He laughed, pretending to fall to his knees in defeat.
Law smiled at the sight and remarked, "he's good with them."
"I think that's just from his time being a big brother to Luffy. It carried over into this life. He's a natural with kids," Rina responded.
Her ex-boyfriend nodded a little and kept observing them. Then it was as if a switch flicked inside his daughter. She turned to them and ran from the water calling for her mom.
Rina smiled as she knelt down and wrapped her daughter in a tight hug. Cora hugged her mother in return just as tightly but then looked up at Law and blushed. She hid her face in her mother's shoulder, causing Rina to smile warmly and soothed her daughter, "shh, it's okay. He's a good guy."
Law crouched down, placing Kikoku on the ground beside him. Cora hesitated, then glanced at Law and quickly turned her gaze back away from him. This caused him to softly chuckle, she was shy, and he'd always found that cute about kids her age.
"Cora, this mommy's friend, Trafalgar Law," Rina introduced them. Once more, the little girl looked over at him. Law kept the smile on his face as he greeted her, assuring her he was a safe person. The little girl didn't say anything, but smiled, giggled and hid her face back in her mom's shirt.
"She's really shy with new people," Ace offered as he walked over with the other two kids. The blonde haired little girl stuck her hand out to Law and introduced herself, "I'm Sora."
"Daichi, nice to meet ya," the red haired boy chimed with a nod of his head.
Law smiled at the two, returning their greetings and slowly Cora began to peel herself away from her mother. Law sat cross legged on the ground with them while Ace ushered the other two children into the house, telling them he was going to cook some grilled blue fin tuna.
Law's mouth almost salivated at the thought of the grilled fish, but it was Cora who asked him in a near whisper, "you like grilled tuna?"
Law felt his heart leap with happiness. She was trying to converse with him! He kept his calm exterior as he answered, "I just like grilled fish. Tuna's really good though."
Cora gave a small smile, relaxing a little. Rina still had her hand on Cora's back, Law could only assume to reassure their daughter that she hadn't been left alone with a complete stranger. Cora sat on the grass in front of him and stated, "Mama's talked about you. You're a doctor right?"
Law nodded his head and said, "that's right. I mostly do surgeries on people."
"Sturgies?"
"Surgeries," Law gently corrected, although the mispronunciation had made him a bit proud at how close she'd gotten it. He figured she knew what a Sturgeon was and her young mind had combined the two words.
The child's brow furrowed while she asked, "What's that?"
Rina gave a small gesture of her head to indicate this was all him. She wasn't going to step in. It was their time, she was only there to help their daughter open up and talk. He was grateful to her for this, as it gave him a chance to see how well he could communicate with Cora.
"It's when a doctor cuts someone open to fix something inside of them that's making them sick or hurt," he answered.
"Oh, like Uncle Ace does with broken swords, 'cept with people," Cora realized, her face brightening a little with confidence. Again pride swelled within him at how certain she was of this connection she'd made.
"Yeah," Law agreed, his own anxiety over their first meeting easing as they talked. He knew he couldn't stay long, if he was honest he knew he'd already overstayed his welcome as far as the authorities here were concerned—but even if he was caught it was worth it for the chance to meet his daughter and see where she lived.
