Chapter 85
As we return to the lab where Sada and Turo were revealed as AI-powered robots, the atmosphere is tense with anticipation. Suddenly, a loud crash echoes through the room, jolting us into alertness. "Is everyone okay?" I inquire, my voice tinged with concern.
Carmine's groan breaks through the darkness. "It's WAY too dark in here! I just smacked my head on something!" he complains, his frustration evident.
"That's 'cause you're just running around without any idea where you're going!" Kieran's voice cuts through the darkness, laced with exasperation.
But Carmine's mood shifts unexpectedly, her voice taking on a teasing tone. "Wow, Kiki... Sounds like someone's finally breaking out of their funk, hmmm?" she remarks with a playful smile.
Kieran's reaction is swift, his eyes widening before he averts his gaze. "Shut it... Where's Ms. Briar, anyway?" he deflects, changing the subject.
My Dad's reassurance comes next. "Don't worry about her, she's busy rummaging through, like, a whole stack of documents over there," he informs us, his voice carrying a note of amusement.
Our attention turns to Ms. Briar, who seems absorbed in her task but expresses a sudden concern. "Aren't those someone's private photos and stuff? We probably shouldn't be looking at all that..." she murmurs, her voice tinged with unease.
"Huh, you're awfully considerate all of a sudden," Alice observes, her tone marked by curiosity.
Serena interjects with a practical suggestion. "If I remember correctly, we take this elevator down to the time machine... I wonder if we can go even further down with this elevator."
"Well, we've no time to waste. Let's go down!" my mom declares decisively, her words spurring us into action as we all head down the elevator together.
As the elevator descends further and further into the depths of the lab, a sense of exhilaration fills the air. "You know, it's moving pretty fast, actually... It's almost like I'm floating!" Carmine remarks, his voice tinged with excitement.
"Hey... everyone?" Kieran's sudden interjection breaks the momentary silence. "That panel we used to unlock the gate... Didn't it say something about where the elevator goes?"
A ripple of realization passes through the group. "Now that you mention it, yeah... Something about an elevator being redirected, right?" Lillie confirms, her brow furrowing in concentration.
"As far as I know, there is only one elevator inside the Zero Lab..." Briar adds thoughtfully. "So the panel must have been referring to the elevator we're currently inside."
The uncertainty hangs in the air, palpable and unsettling. "So... where exactly is this thing taking us?" Alice voices the question that lingers on all our minds.
As we ponder the mysterious destination, the elevator door suddenly slides open, revealing a breathtaking sight. Gasps escape our lips as we behold more crystals and caverns stretching out before us, shrouded in an otherworldly glow.
"OH MY GOODNESS!" Ms. Briar's gasp echoes through the cavernous space, her astonishment palpable.
"So... what? Are we under Area Zero or something?" Carmine's inquiry breaks the silence, her voice carrying a mix of wonder and disbelief.
"Yes! According to my data, our current position is far deeper than where we last were!" Briar confirms after consulting the Rotom Phone. "Could the elevator have taken us even further down than its previous destination?"
"Man, Area Zero was already a lot to take in..." Carmine's frown deepens. "I don't think anything's gonna surprise me at this point, no matter what we run into."
"Hey, guys! What's with all this stuff?" Dia's voice interrupts our contemplation as we notice tables laden with documents. My Dad moves closer, examining the reports with interest. "It seems to be Professor Sada and Professor Turo's reports," he announces, his tone tinged with curiosity.
A massive cavern exists beneath Area Zero, and there slumbers Terapagos, the hidden treasure of Area Zero. Its body has become crystal, protecting it from hostile outsiders. It appears that rousing it will take some time.
In this cavern, I have witnessed the Terastal phenomenon occurring in a way I've never seen aboveground - Terastallization that appears to hold the power of every known type. I have dubbed this Tera Type the Stellar type for now. Could Terapagos' influence be at play?
Dia's voice breaks the silence, his tone tinged with incredulity. "Terapagos is the hidden treasure of Area Zero? And it's slumbering in the form of... a crystal?"
The revelation hangs in the air, sparking curiosity among us. "And what is this about a Stellar Tera Type?" my mom adds, her voice laced with intrigue.
Briar's reaction is immediate and animated. "Brilliant! Absolutely marvelous! To think there was so much that Heath didn't write about! These documents are a veritable treasure trove! And we've only just begun our expedition!" Her excitement is infectious, spreading a sense of anticipation among the group.
Minami's voice cuts through the excitement with a note of skepticism. "I dunno how she can get so excited in a bizarre place like this..." she remarks, her tone reflective of her uncertainty.
Feeling a mix of emotions, I find myself agreeing with Minami's sentiment. "Same..." I sigh, unable to shake off the feeling of unease that lingers in the air.
But Kieran's determination breaks through our apprehension. "The Legendary Pokemon Terapagos... That's the hidden treasure of Area Zero... C'mon, let's hurry up and go further in," he urges, his voice infused with resolve.
Briar, though reluctant to leave the trove of documents behind, acquiesces to Kieran's suggestion. "I still haven't gotten my fill of these documents, but... OK! Let's go! It would be best to discover the truth with our own eyes, after all!" she declares, her tone reflecting a blend of excitement and determination.
My mom's voice cuts through the chatter, a reminder of the dangers that lie ahead. "Let's keep moving. Stay on guard, everyone," she warns, her words a sobering reminder of the gravity of our mission.
As the group prepares to move forward, I can't shake off the desire to delve deeper into the documents we've discovered. With a sense of determination, I quickly gather a few of the most intriguing reports, carefully tucking them under my arm.
"I'll just bring these along," I announce to the group, my voice tinged with eagerness.
My mom nods understandingly, her expression reflecting a mixture of caution and approval. "Just be careful not to get too distracted," she advises her words a gentle reminder of the importance of staying focused on our mission.
I am calling the area found below Area Zero the Area Zero underdepths. From the composition of the rock, I would date the cavern's formation to two million years ago. There are indications that many objects - or creatures perhaps - filled the space prior to the current cavern's formation.
The depths bottom out approximately 3300 feet beneath the surface. There are indications of numerous past cave-ins, likely resulting from tectonic activity and erosion caused by rainwater or groundwater, but it appears that the ground has remained stable since the last major cave-in.
And there is another strange document that causes me shivers:
While investigating the hidden treasure, Sada and I found ourselves suddenly transported to a great height, near the lake that smelled of sulfur. Based on temperature and humidity, I believe it to have been the eastern lands I've read about before. And there, four children gave me a white volume...
"Ash? What's wrong?" Serena's voice cuts through my thoughts, filled with concern.
"I can't help but shake at this entry over here..." I say, my voice trembling slightly. "Four children gave Sada and Turo a whole volume..."
"What is the white volume?" Alice asks, her curiosity piqued.
Our discussion comes to an abrupt halt as we encounter a crystal blocking our path. Briar steps forward, her expression a mix of fascination and concern. "What IS this? It's like a crystal trying to be a flower. It's completely blocked up the path..." she muses aloud.
"Yeah, we're not going any further with this in the way," Elena adds, her voice tinged with frustration.
Minami wastes no time in suggesting a solution. "Can Koraidon and Miraidon smash through the crystal?" she asks, her eyes darting between Briar and me.
"I don't know... maybe we should try," I respond, my mind racing with possibilities. But Briar intervenes before we can act, her tone urgent. "Hold on, hold on! PLEASE, hold on! This is quite likely a manifestation of pure Terastal energy... We have no idea what might happen if we try to destroy it with brute force."
"Okay, so what do we do then?" Dia's voice echoes the question that lingers on all our minds, uncertainty clouding his tone.
As the tension mounts with the appearance of the Glimmora, my Dad is quick to observe its unusual glow. "So it seems like there are Pokemon who come all the way down here as well. Though this one is glowing strangely..."
Ms. Briar, eager to investigate, moves forward, but Carmine steps in to stop her, recognizing her limitations in battle. Ultimately, the responsibility falls on me to engage in combat.
However, as the Glimmora Terastallizes, a strange pattern emerges atop its head: crystals representing each type surround a turtle-like appearance. "What on earth is that energy?! It... it couldn't be?!" Ms. Briar gasps, her voice filled with disbelief.
I realize with a start that this must be the Stellar Type mentioned in the report. As I Terastalize Pikachu, the Glimmora strikes with Power Gem, causing the rock crystal to blink. Despite this, the Pokemon's type remains unchanged, allowing me to defeat it with Iron Tail, which proves super-effective.
With the Glimmora defeated, the crystal flower blocking our path disappears, revealing a new passage. "Did knocking out that sparkling Pokemon make the crystal flower disappear?" Carmine asks, her confusion evident.
"It's just like in that report we found earlier," my dad explains. "What we just witnessed was a Pokemon wielding the powers of each and every type. That means it must have been the Stellar Tera Type!"
"Wait, was THAT supposed to be the so-called hidden treasure we're looking for?" Carmine questions incredulously.
"No, that's just a Glimmora with the Stellar Tera Type," I clarify. "The professor's notes said the hidden treasure of Area Zero is slumbering in crystal form."
"Well, the only way to know if it was the hidden treasure or not is to keep going," Kieran suggests, his voice steady as we press forward into the unknown.
As we press on, our path is obstructed by three more crystal flowers, each requiring a fierce battle to break through. With determination, we defeat a Noivern, an Iron Thorns, and a Garganacl, shattering the obstacles in our way. Yet, the treacherous terrain demands our utmost caution, as one misstep could spell disaster, plunging us into the depths below.
The further we venture, the denser the Terastal energy surrounding us becomes. Fatigue begins to weigh heavily on our Pokemon, their strength waning with each step.
"My Tera Orb! I think it's... reacting to something?" Kieran's voice breaks through the weary silence, prompting us to retrieve our own Tera Orbs. As we do, we sense an overwhelming surge of Terastal energy coursing through the air.
"Are we FINALLY at the finish line?" Carmine's hopeful inquiry echoes our collective desire for resolution.
"The hidden treasure!" Without warning, Kieran dashes forward, leaving the rest of us behind in his eagerness to uncover the truth. "Hey, where do you think you're going?" Carmine's protest goes unheard as Kieran forges ahead.
"I can't wait another second! The truth behind the Scarvio Book is so close now!" Ms. Briar's voice rings out, her excitement matching Kieran's fervor.
"Is she really your teacher in school? She sure doesn't act like one..." My mom's observation carries a hint of amusement amidst the tension of the moment.
As we finally arrive at the location where Kieran and Ms. Briar are, our eyes widen in awe at the sight before us. Giant crystals loom overhead, almost obscuring the rocky formations beneath them. Serena's voice cuts through the reverent silence, her words tinged with wonder. "What IS this place...? The vibes here are on a totally different level."
"The hidden treasure... Where is it?!" Kieran's voice is filled with urgency as he scans the area, searching for any sign of the legendary Terapagos. Briar, however, seems to have spotted something amidst the towering pillars. "There, Kieran - up ahead! There's something among those pillars!" she points out, her excitement palpable.
As we edge closer, Kieran's impatience grows. "This stone's the hidden treasure?" he questions, his tone laced with disbelief.
"Hold on, let me check something." Briar retrieves the Scarvio book, intent on confirming their discovery. But Kieran's frustration mounts, his focus consumed by a singular desire. "If I can get the hidden treasure of Area Zero... I... I can FINALLY beat Ash!" he declares vehemently.
"Kiki! You're still going on about that nonsense?!" Carmine's voice rings out, her exasperation evident.
Undeterred, Kieran continues to exert effort, attempting to extract the crystal from its resting place. "Shut it, Sis! Ash has everything I've ever wanted! He's got strong Pokemon! He can go anywhere he wants, and he can be friends with anyone! I loved Ogerpon since forever ago! But even Ogerpon chose him over me!" His words spill out in a torrent of frustration and jealousy.
"But Kieran - you did your best too!" Serena interjects, her voice gentle and reassuring.
Kieran's gaze shifts to encompass all of us, his bitterness apparent. "Even YOU all! Including Sis! You were being all nasty toward him at first, but then boom! You were like best friends in no time!" His accusation hangs in the air, directed particularly at Carmine, who can only lower her head in response, her expression a mix of guilt and remorse.
"I've got nothing... I worked so hard, and for what?! I STILL lost in the end! This... this is all I have left now!" Kieran's voice echoes with frustration and despair, his words filled with bitterness.
As tensions escalate, Briar abruptly closes the book and calls out, "Found it! This crystal is definitely what we're looking for! Go on, Kieran - pull with everything you've got! Show us the hidden treasure of Area Zero!"
"Is she seriously oblivious about what has just transpired?" Minami's incredulous question hangs in the air, reflecting the disbelief shared by many of us.
With a final surge of effort, Kieran wrenches the crystal from its resting place, causing it to glow and levitate before us. As it takes on the form of a small turtle-like creature, Terapagos, its gaze locks onto mine with a sense of curiosity.
But before anyone can react, Kieran produces a Master Ball and hurls it at Terapagos with a cry of determination. "You're MINE!"
"No way..." The collective gasp of horror escapes from our lips as the Master Ball engulfs Terapagos, sealing it within. Despite its legendary status and the collective efforts of Team Rocket to obtain it, there is no escaping the inescapable grasp of the Master Ball.
"That was Terapagos? You... caught it, right?" Dia's voice breaks through the stunned silence, his words the first to bring a semblance of calm to the situation.
"F-finally..." Kieran's voice trembles slightly as he stares at the Master Ball in his hand, a mix of disbelief and triumph coloring his expression.
"Very well done, Kieran! The fact that you brought along a Master Ball tells me you were well prepared for this!" Briar's praise is effusive, her excitement palpable. "Now I can study Terapagos whenever I want... But! There's no time like the present! Think you could give us a little demonstration of Terapagos' power right now?" she suggests eagerly, her eyes gleaming with anticipation.
"Well, you heard her, Ash..." Kieran turns to me, a determined glint in his eye. "I'm also itching to see what Terapagos can do. Get ready so we can start."
I exchange a glance with my parents, who offer me a supportive nod. With a deep breath, I take my place opposite Kieran, steeling myself for the upcoming battle.
"This time... I'll definitely beat you, Ash!" Kieran's words hang in the air, a declaration of his newfound determination and resolve.
As Terapagos is sent out onto the field, its transformation begins with its ability Tera Shift taking effect. Its shell shimmers with crystallized energy, adorned with eighteen irregular pentagons on top, each decorated with differently colored symbols resembling all eighteen type icons. These symbols constantly morph back and forth, shifting into abstract shapes, while a hexagon in the middle serves as the focal point of its form.
"It changes form..." Lillie's gasp echoes the astonishment shared by all of us.
With Pikachu by my side, I waste no time in launching an attack. As Pikachu unleashes Thunderbolt, I notice with surprise that Terapagos distorts its form, causing the move to become less effective than anticipated.
"Not very effective? What is going on?" Serena's confusion mirrors my own, but when I follow up with Brick Break, the move deals surprisingly super-effective damage.
"Huh, it has a weakness? I thought this was the hidden treasure of Area Zero?" Kieran's disbelief is evident as he watches the battle unfold.
Despite Terapagos's attempts to retaliate with moves like Zen Headbutt or Gyro Ball, Pikachu's resilience proves too much to overcome. With each strike, Pikachu chips away at Terapagos's defenses until finally emerging victorious, seemingly without breaking a sweat.
"Wh-why?! I thought if I just had Terapagos—If I had the hidden treasure of Area Zero, it... it would make me stronger... I thought it'd let me beat Ash!" Kieran's voice quavers with disappointment and frustration, his hopes dashed in an instant.
Carmine steps forward, her expression filled with concern. "Kiki, that's enough! It's time to stop this-" Her words are abruptly interrupted by Briar, who shakes her head in disagreement. "No. Something's not right. Its Terastal energy output is far too low. Not to mention the fact that it looks different from the illustration in the Scarvio Book..."
"So... Terapagos isn't the hidden treasure of Area Zero?" Kieran's voice trembles with uncertainty.
"No. I'm sure it is. We must be missing something - a way to transform it into the treasure," Briar concludes before suddenly gasping in realization. "Of course! Terapagos is made of Terastal energy! Kieran! You must Terastalize Terapagos this instant!"
"Wait, you're going to Terastalize Terapagos?" My mom's voice carries a note of apprehension, echoing the concern shared by many of us.
"If my hunch is correct, Terapagos will resonate with the energy from your Tera Orb... And the hidden treasure will finally reveal its true brilliance!" Briar's excitement is palpable as she outlines her plan.
"Got it!" Kieran responds, his determination renewed.
"Hold on! I don't think it's a good idea... we might be opening Pandora's box..." My Dad's warning falls on deaf ears as Kieran acts swiftly, throwing the Tera Orb atop Terapagos. Instantly, a surge of energy erupts from the fusion, engulfing us in its brilliance before we can fully comprehend the consequences of our actions.
As we scramble to shield ourselves from the overwhelming surge of energy, Briar's voice cuts through the chaos with urgency. "Terapagos in its fully awakened form... THIS is the hidden treasure of Area Zero!"
Stellar Form Terapagos materializes, its presence commanding and ominous. An energy field in the shape of a dome emanates beneath it, surrounded by crystals bearing each of the type icons, their colors vibrant and pulsating. The rest of its body takes on a rainbow-like hue, while its central crystal grows into a crown-like structure adorned with jewels corresponding to the type icons. At its peak sits a miniature version of its Normal Form, with the icon for the Terastal Phenomenon hovering above it.
"This is not the time for celebrating! We're in deep trouble!" Elena's warning is punctuated by the sight of energy beams shooting out from Terapagos, aimed directly at us. In a split-second reaction, Koraidon emerges to shield Kieran from harm, deflecting the deadly beams with its sturdy form.
"Things are getting out of hand, Kiki!" Carmine's voice is laced with urgency as we watch the ground begin to crack beneath us. "You should return Terapagos to its ball!"
With a sense of growing horror, Kieran attempts to recall Terapagos, only to find the Master Ball shattering into pieces under the strain of the energy. "Huh... It won't go back inside! Why?" His voice trembles with disbelief as he struggles to comprehend the situation.
"Its energy output is going haywire! We're all in serious danger if we can't bring it under control!" My mom's words are a sobering reminder of the peril we face.
Desperate to contain the chaos, we send out our Pokemon in a frantic attempt to halt Terapagos's rampage. "C'mon, Kiki, you need to do something, too! We've got to get Terapagos under control!" Carmine's plea is met with stunned silence as Kiki remains frozen, his mind grappling with the enormity of the disaster unfolding before us. "N-no... This wasn't supposed to happen... This is all my fault!" he mutters, his voice filled with remorse and despair.
As Terapagos forms the formidable Tera Shield, a move typically seen in four-star or higher Tera Raids, our horror intensifies as it unleashes Tera Starstorm, a devastating attack that damages all the Pokemon we've sent out: Pikachu, Sylveon, Koraidon, Miraidon, Ogerpon, Espeon, Snowy, and Sinistcha. Despite our efforts, the Tera Shield proves impenetrable, dampening the effectiveness of our attacks and leaving us vulnerable to Terapagos's onslaught.
After what feels like an eternity, our Tera Orbs finally begin to charge, allowing us to coordinate our efforts and mount a coordinated assault on the shield. But our hopes are quickly dashed as Terapagos absorbs the Terastal energy, rendering our efforts futile.
"What? It absorbed Terastal energy?" Briar's gasp mirrors our collective shock and disbelief.
As a new shield forms around Terapagos, my mom's voice rings out with concern. "It put up another barrier of such strength?! Did it use the Terastal energy it absorbed to do so?"
"You need to get in there and battle, Kiki! Ash, Serena, Alice, and Lillie are doing all the work!" Carmine's urgent plea jolts Kiki into action, but his response is tinged with defeat. "I-it's no good! I'm useless!" The weight of his words hangs heavy in the air, a stark reminder of our dire situation.
Despite the urgency of the situation, we know we must continue to stall and strategize, buying time until we can Terastalize once more. The main obstacle we face is Terapagos's ability to distort types, leaving us uncertain about the effectiveness of our moves and adding another layer of complexity to the already intense battle.
Ash's in trouble! You need to HELP HIM!"
"B-but I can't... I can't help anyone..." Kieran's voice falters with doubt, his confidence waning in the face of adversity.
"Come on, Kieran! What exactly are you doing? You are the one who gave me a lot of trouble during the BB League match and now you're giving up everything because you can't defeat me? Not to mention our lives are in danger and now it is not the time to doubt your ability to help out!" My words, tinged with frustration, seem to jolt Kieran into action. With a determined frown, he finally sends out Hydrapple to join the fray.
"Good, now let's do this together!" With the third barrier demolished, my Dad's voice rings out with encouragement. "It seems like Terapagos can't absorb any more energy or put up another barrier. I think you should finish this."
"Everyone! Attack together!" I shout, rallying our forces as we unleash a synchronized assault on Terapagos.
"Thunderbolt! Electro Drift!" "Moonblast! Ivy Cudgel! Collision Course!" "Psychic!" "Blizzard!" "Matcha Gotcha!" "Fickle Beam!" The cacophony of battle cries fills the air as each of us pours our energy into the attack, united in our determination to defeat our formidable foe.
And finally, with a resounding crack, Terapagos's shell shatters under the force of our combined assault, signaling its defeat.
"Maybe it'll go inside a ball now!" Kieran's voice rings out with hope. "I know I can count on you, Ash. You got this!"
I nod in acknowledgment before taking a deep breath and hurling my Master Ball, its iconic design soaring through the air before encapsulating Terapagos within its confines. With the battle won and Terapagos captured, a sense of relief washes over us.
Terapagos: The Tera Pokemon: Normal Type. Terapagos protects itself using its power to transform energy into hard crystals. This Pokémon is the source of the Terastal phenomenon.
Terapagos (Terastal Form): The Tera Pokemon: Normal Type. The shell is made of crystallized Terastal energy. When struck by a move, this shell absorbs the move's energy and transfers it to Terapagos.
Terapagos (Stellar Form): The Tera Pokemon: Stellar Type. An old expedition journal describes the sight of this Pokémon buried in the depths of the earth as resembling a planet floating in space.
"Is... is it over?" Elena's voice trembles with uncertainty, her eyes scanning the aftermath of the intense battle.
My mom's concern is palpable as she asks, "Is everyone okay?"
"We're fine, don't worry," I reassure her, offering a small smile of reassurance.
"Oh thank goodness... What a relief..." Briar's voice is laced with regret as she acknowledges her role in leading us into such a perilous situation. "I let my obsession lead you all into a very dangerous situation... It's simply inexcusable. I'm so sorry, everyone..."
My dad's usually composed demeanor cracks as he shakes his head in frustration. "You should be! The fact that you're completely fixated on this Terastal stuff is inexcusable. Your obsessiveness almost caused our doom."
Briar bows her head in contrition, acknowledging the weight of her actions. "Yes... You're absolutely right..."
"I... I messed up too..." Kieran's admission is tinged with self-reflection and regret. "I looked up to Ash for so long... I wanted to be like him so, so badly. I didn't know what else to do... But I guess I don't have it in me to be like him after all."
With a sigh of relief, he continues, "Finally... Finally I can let it go."
"Kieran, you are really cool as well. You just have to be yourself," I offer words of encouragement, recognizing the courage it takes to confront one's own insecurities.
Tears well up in Kieran's eyes, and he begins to cry openly, his emotions overwhelming him. Carmine, ever the protective older sister, sighs in exasperation. "I swear! I've got such a silly younger brother... You... finally let it go..." And with that, she wraps her arms around Kieran, offering comfort and solace as they share a moment of raw emotion.
My mom's gentle words of reassurance wash over Carmine and Kieran, offering comfort in the aftermath of their harrowing ordeal. "You two must be so scared. But you all shone brilliantly just now. You were truly dazzling! And in the end, Ash even managed to catch Terapagos! So I think we can consider our little expedition into Area Zero good and finished. Time to get you back to Blueberry Academy."
We nod in agreement as we gather our belongings and begin the journey back to Blueberry Academy. After some time, we finally arrive back at our familiar surroundings. Ms. Briar and the Macro Cosmos team are deep in discussion about their next steps, while the rest of us head towards our dorms.
As we're about to part ways, Kieran stops me, his expression earnest and apologetic. "L-look, I know I caused a lot of trouble for the League Club and everyone... I wanted to give everybody a proper apology... Including you, Ash... And... uh... I guess what I'm trying to say is... I wanna make things right."
I offer him a reassuring smile. "No problem. We all make mistakes. What's important is that we learn from them."
"Do you think... we could start over from zero and be friends again?" Kieran's voice is hopeful, tinged with a hint of uncertainty.
"Of course we can," I respond without hesitation, returning his smile as we walk back to the dorms together, ready to put the past behind us and embrace a fresh start.
And that is the end of the Terapagos arc, but there are still post games that I need to include and I hope you like this chapter.
