CHAPTER 71
Elizabeth Delany arrived at Henry's house running, her face pale and her eyes wide. She had to control herself until Jack got home and ran off as if he were running away from something. She knew that Jack had understood nothing, but as his wife was ready to seduce him into a beautiful night of love, he probably now had no idea of his own name. She smiled, their love was the same as hers and her husband's, and she was happy that they too had found true love. Unfortunately, hers had cooled after the loss of their daughter, when she thought that Wynn had abandoned her during that complicated birth.
Henry, Frankison and Wynn were sitting at the dinner table chatting, and when he saw the state she was in when he arrived, Wynn threw back his chair and ran to his wife. He knew her very well. Something serious had happened.
-Elizabeth Delayne What happened? Wynn asked. He was a direct man and always got straight to the point. She looked into his eyes. They had always had a strong bond, even through all the tribulations of life, the misunderstandings, but the love that united them was very strong and so they were able to communicate without any words. She took his hand and pulled him into her room. Wynn could do nothing but accompany his wife, she was on her way back from Jack's house, and he hoped that all was well with the couple.
Frankison looked at Henry and they couldn't understand each other;
-"What was that? Henry asked.
-I don't know, Henry. But something serious is going on...
Elizabeth Delayne locked the door and heard her husband talking behind her back.
-What's the matter woman, am I worried about you? You look very pale...
She answered softly:
-She's my daughter. Wynn realized that she wasn't asking, his wife was saying it with a certainty and determination that he had never seen before.
Turning, she looked into Wynn's eyes and said firmly.
-Beth is my daughter, she has the birthmark.
-She's our daughter, my love. Wynn replied.
Elizabeth Delayne looked at her husband and asked very seriously... with her hands on her hips and her face closed, she spoke in a loud voice.
-Did you know and didn't tell me?
-Love, I needed to know all the details, how could I talk about something without concrete proof? But her mark and compatibility when she donated blood to Frankison give us a 90% chance that she is our daughter. Carson confirmed it for me.
-Wynn Delayne! Why didn't you tell me? I had a right to know. Elizabeth Delayne shouted. She was furious and threw herself at her husband, starting to punch him in the chest. She cried a lot and Wynn hugged her tightly, "realizing that once again his wife felt put in the background. That wasn't his intention, he just wanted to know all the details first, before exposing them to her and their daughter, besides, how was he going to talk about his suspicion of his brother's actions?"
-Calm down, my love. I promise you that I'll never hide anything again, no matter how painful and difficult it is, I'll tell you everything... I just wanted to protect you, without giving you false hope.
Elizabeth, with a sad voice and tears streaming down her face, began to speak:
-Wynn, do you think protection is more important than sharing our fears and uncertainties as husband and wife? Our marriage isn't about hiding things, it's about facing challenges together
Wynn fought back tears, because the only thing he wanted in the world was to hurt his wife, he just wanted to protect her:
-I know you're sure, Elizabeth. I just don't
-Wynn, marriage is about trust.
-Love... I know it is. You're absolutely right
Elizabeth spoke in a sad voice, her eyes watering:
-Wynn, do you really believe that fear is more important than sharing our fears and uncertainties, warming our marriage with trust and mutual affection? Our relationship doesn't thrive on secrets, but on sincerity and togetherness at all times.
-Wynn Delayne, I am your wife. I married you because I love you with all my might. I have accompanied you to the worst places on earth in your service as a mountie, I have been with you always, and I hope you will be with me.
-I did it for you, my dear.
-Wynn, you can't make decisions for me. You can defend me and protect me, but I'm an individual who thinks and has feelings, which should be respected by everyone, including you.
Wynn had his head down, he knew where he had gone wrong...he had that flaw; if he could carry everything by himself by making the decisions, he would and he wouldn't let his wife get hurt. She took her chin and lifted her husband's head, she knew that man better than he knew himself...
-Love, look at me. She spoke more calmly. She knew that her husband was only thinking of doing what was best for her, but they needed to talk about it.
-"I know you wanted to protect me. But Wynn, you're the commander within the battalion. Here at home, you're my husband, my friend, my man... we're married, and that means being together through everything, both good times and bad. Together Wynn...
-You can't want to carry the whole burden of this matter on your shoulders... -And looking at her husband, she kissed him on the lips and asked him to tell her everything.
Sitting on the bed, hands clasped together, he told her everything, from his distrust of the resemblance, then the birthmark, and the blood donation. And what he felt when he hugged her, when he felt the love and protection for her in an enormous way. He also told her that Frankison had found out, that Jack and Bill were aware and what Bill's trip was about.
-Wynn, because I'm sure you haven't told me everything yet and that you're still hiding something. I beg you, don't hide anything from me anymore.
She knew that this would be the worst part of the story and ended up telling her her suspicions about her brother and everything she knew about the midwife. She began to cry desperately, because knowing that her brother was involved in that story hurt so much. Wynn took his wife in his arms and stroked her hair; words weren't necessary, they needed to recharge themselves with each other's love in order to face the whole story together.
In the living room, Henry and Frankison, who had been walking non-stop, noticed that the shouting had stopped. Henry wasn't stupid, so he pieced together the conversations and knew what they were about and, looking at Frankison, smiled and said:
-You've got the best brother in the world, one that anyone would like to have. As well as being beautiful.
-I know, Henry. I'm privileged. And he hugged Henry.
