Chapter 2: Orientation

Trinity could hardly sleep that evening in her new home. The unfamiliar setting along with the absence of her moms voice throughout the house felt foreign. Her new room wasn't much different in size, but she definitely preferred her old bed. As far as who she was living with, she'd only briefly met 2 out of 3 mammals. Ironically the 3rd was the one she was anxious to meet the most – one she shared a name with. Nick Wilde.

The mammal shifted in bed in attempt to make herself comfortable. She turned on her back looking up at the ceiling fan. After a moment she reached over to the side of the bed grabbing her phone. Upon tapping the screen, a text notification from her mom appeared.

"Finally made it back home. Miss you already Trin" Silvia said.

Trinity smiled at the message. It was about 9:30 so it took her mother almost 4 hours to get back home.

"Miss you too mom. See you tomorrow? I still haven't unpacked my stuff yet..lol" she responded. Although Trinity knew she was going to be staying awhile, she wasn't about to hide the fact of her disliking the situation.

20 seconds later another text came through.

"Get some rest. I'll call you tomorrow to see how orientation went. So excited for you to start high school!"

'That makes one of us..' the teen thought.

Trinity set the phone down letting out a sigh. Sleep didn't appeal to her with all of the thoughts going on. Usually by this time she would get up and get a glass of water or perhaps go in the living room and find a movie on Petflix. But this wasn't her home.

'Great' she thought turning over. 'I feel like I'm a prisoner trapped in this room.' She closed her eyes tightly in hopes of shutting her mind off. After what seemed like forever, the

teen finally drifted off into a deep sleep.

The following morning a knock was heard at the bedroom door. Trinitys' eyes slowly opened to find out she wasn't in her usual room. She slowly leaned up letting out a yawn. Moments later she heard another knock at the door.

"Uh..w..who is it?" She called out while rubbing her eyes. It felt like she only had an hour of sleep.

"It's Jake" a voice from the other side answered.

Trinity was confused momentarily – that was until her brain had finally remembered. She was in Zootopia staying with a new family. Needless to say she was less than thrilled. Growing up as an only child she wasn't used to siblings coming to her door.

"What do you w-" she stopped herself in attempt to be civil. "What's up?"

"Just checking to see if you're up. We have to leave for orientation in an hour" the fox replied. "Moms making us some breakfast."

'Moms making us breakfast..?' she thought shaking her head. 'Your mom is making you breakfast. You don't even know me. None of you do.'

"You coming?" Jacob called again eagerly.

"I'll be down in a bit" the lykoi replied groggily. The day hadn't even begun and she was already done with it. The sound of footsteps walking away from the door indicated a retreat. She laid back in bed closing her eyes. 'Maybe they'll forget I'm here' she thought wrapping herself in the covers.

Not even what felt like a 30 seconds later another soft knock was heard at the door. The teen let out a loud groan of frustration.

"Dude seriously I said I'll be down in a minute!" Trinity snapped burying her face in the pillow. "Please just leave me alo-"

"Trinity" a female voice spoke from the other side of the door. It was Judys voice. Trinity instantly turned over surprised.

"O..oh uh aunt Judy I'm sorry I thought-"

"May I come in?" Judy replied.

Trinity gulped. What was she going to say? No? It's not like it was her actual room. "Su..yea..yes" she stuttered.

The bedroom door slowly opened revealing the grey bunny. She had a plate of food in her paws.

"Jacob said you didn't seem hungry" she spoke slowly making her way towards the bedside. "I figured I'd try anyways."

There was something about this bunny that Trinity couldn't quite figure out. She seemed so genuine and caring. Perhaps this was why her mother spoke so highly of her.

Judy set the plate of food loaded with seasoned vegetables and rice down on the dresser.

"I hope you like it – if you decide to eat that is.." Judy said now backing away. "It would be nice to have you join us downstairs but I understand if you just want to be alone right now."

Trinity stared at the plate of food for a moment before looking up at the bunny.

"I..er.." she started a bit lost for words. "Thank..you..for the food."

Judy smiled. "You're welcome. Also Nick is downstairs eating with us if you wanted to say hello before we leave for orientation."

This indeed peeked Trinitys interest. "I'll be right down" she said eagerly scurrying to the side of the bed.

"Okay great!" Judy said cheerfully making her way to the door. "See you in a bit." She quietly closed the door behind her.

Trinity stood up in her pajamas. What was she going to say to him?

'Hello I'm Trinity..so what can you tell me about my dad..no' she thought. That would be too direct. She pondered for another moment before grabbing her plate and making her way to the door. 'I'll figure it out'

Making her way downstairs she could hear voices talking along with the television in the living room. As her foot touched the last step she peeked around the corner into the kitchen. Present at the table was Jacob along with an older fox. Judy was making her way to her seat with a plate of steaming carrots. It took a few seconds before Jacob noticed Trinity standing there.

"Bout time" he called out with a wide grin. Judy and the other fox turned to see what their son was talking about. Trinity froze. The green eyes of the fox – presumably her uncle pierced into hers.

"Come sit" Judy welcomed.

The lykoi slowly made her way to the remaining empty chair at the table. She set her plate down taking a seat. Before she could open her mouth Judy spoke again.

"Nick this is Trinity – Silvias daughter" Judy introduced. "Trinity this is Nick."

The two stared at each other for a moment. A warm smile formed on Nicks face.

"Hello Trinity" he spoke. "Pleasure to meet you."

"The..pleasure is mine.. sir" Trinity answered as her eyes shot down to her plate. She picked up her fork poking at her food.

Jacob snickered. "Dad did she really just call you 'sir'?" He leaned back in his chair laughing.

"Nothing wrong with showing respect son" Nick looked over raising his eyebrow.

"Okay okay" Jacob chuckled regaining his composure. "Can I ask you something Trin..?" he leaned forward taking a huge bite of food.

Trinity looked over at the teen sitting across from her. A breakfast interview was the absolute last thing she needed to start her day. But her curiosity gained the best of her. "Uh..sure? I mean you're probably going to ask it anyway so just spit it out."

"So what exactly are you anyway?" the fox blurted out in between chewing. "Like I mean.. you know.. no offense but.."

The whole table became silent. Judy stared at her son in shock.

"Jacob!" she gasped.

"What?" the young fox replied coughing. He reached for his glass taking a large gulp of water. "I'm just curious..she doesn't look like any cat I've ever seen."

"I'm half" Trinity began abruptly. "Half ocelot, half wolf" she leaned forward slightly irritated. Perhaps is was the tone but the question felt somewhat degrading. 'What exactly are you? Idiot.'

"Ah..I see.." Jacob replied curiously. "Well I'm 100% fox."

"Cool. You're also 100% getting on my nerves" Trinity hissed now gritting her teeth. "Also I don't remember asking."

"Enough, both of you" Nick spoke up sternly. He looked over at his son. "Apologize."

The young fox grinned in amusement. "It was just a question da-"

"Now" Judy interrupted even more sternly. Jacob looked from one parent to another. He let out a defeated sigh.

"Okay. Sorry..I was just kidding" he said quietly. "It's actually kinda cool you're mixed."

Trinity wasn't sure if the apology was genuine, but frankly she didn't care either way. She stood up from the table.

"I'm gonna go get ready" she muttered walking towards the living room. She left her plate of food without taking a single bite.

"Do you still want to eat before we go-" Judy spoke up.

"I'm okay" Trinity called back. "I'll have some later." The mammal disappeared around the corner heading back upstairs.

Nick and Judy both looked at each other with concern. Jacob sat there quietly. Although he wouldn't admit it, a part of him felt a little bad. Only a tad bit.

"Was it really that serious?" he asked looking to both his parents. "What's the big deal?"

"Son" Nick began placing a paw on his shoulder. "Take it from me, something that may not seem like a big deal to you could mean the world to someone else." He looked over at the bunny next to him. "Right carrots?"

"Correct slick" the bunny agreed.

Jacob cringed. "Ew you guys are starting the nicknames again.." The young fox shook his head. "That's my cue." He teased pretending to get up from the table.

Judy looked over at Nick with a proud smile. 'That's my fox' she thought. It was surreal to think how much their lives had changed all of these years. From working together on the police force to adopting their now teenage son. All she could do was smile. As someone who always strived for more, she was happy to finally be content with where she was in life.

"Okay hurry and finish eating so we can get ready" the bunny said. "We have quite the day ahead of us."

30 minutes passed as the mammals in the house got ready. Trinity stared at herself in the bathroom mirror. She decided to dress comfy to save the time of stressing over what to wear. Her outfit consisted of gray gym shorts with a cropped sky blue hoodie. It could have been seen as lazy but truth be told; she didn't care to impress anyone.

"Trinity are you ready?" Judy called from downstairs. "We're heading to the car now."

"Yay" she whispered letting out a sigh. She took one last look in the mirror before turning the light off. She made her way downstairs into the living room. The television was still on, and present on the sofa was Nick. He looked over at her.

"Big day" he spoke up enthusiastically. "You excited?"

Trinity shifted slightly. "Eh" she shrugged her shoulders.

Nick chuckled. "Yep. Been there. Well you best get going. I'd tag along with you guys but I'm still running a fever" he leaned back. "Also don't want to miss my show.."

Trinity caught herself staring at the fox. In that moment she wanted to ask him so many questions. The name they shared – her dad. She didn't even know what he looked like. No name or pictures. Before another moment passed she snapped out of it.

"Uh..okay..uh feel better soon" she said quickly making her way to the front door. All of her questions would have to wait for now.

Outside she made her way to the silver jeep in the driveway. She walked up to the back door placing a paw on the handle. Upon opening it to her dismay, Jacob was sitting there.

"What's up?" He asked with a snide grin across his muzzle.

"The sky" Trinity answered closing the door in his face. The front passenger window rolled down.

"Come sit up front Trinity" Judy called out from the drivers side. Jacob gestured for her to sit up front as well. At least up there she wouldn't have to deal with his stupid questions. The lykoi opened the door hopping into the vehicle.

"Your hoodie is so cute!" Judy complimented as she put the car into gear. "Blue is one of my favorite colors."

"Thank you.." Trinity mumbled pulling the door closed. "Mine too."

The traffic wasn't nearly as bad as the day prior thankfully considering they were running late. Trinity gazed upon the giant buildings passing by outside. This place truly was a sight to behold with all of its infrastructure.

After 15 minutes of driving a large building came into view. There was a large football field visible in the back along with a running track. A soccer and tennis field were also seen off in the distance.

"Here we are" Judy said turning the radio down. The jeep pulled into the school parking lot full of cars. The building in front of them had a giant walk way with a sign that read 'Savannah High School' above the main entrance. Judy managed to snag a parking spot close to the front.

Trinitys' heart began racing at the sheer size of the establishment. It appeared to be 3 floors high with 4 connecting buildings. The bright orange bricks and the cleanliness of the pavement indicated that this place had a lot of money put into it.

'This place is massive' the lykoi thought.

"Alright kiddos, ready?" the bunny chimed full of excitement. She turned the keys shutting the car off. Jacob didn't answer from the back seat. Only a small huff was heard as he opened his door. Trinity looked over at Judy with a forced smile.

"Yeah.." she spoke nervously. She wasn't exactly sure what to say in response to the question. What mammal was actually excited about going back to school? None that she knew of.

Trinity jumped out of the car making her way over to where Jacob was standing. Judy appeared shortly after joining them. The three mammals began making their way towards the front entrance. A bunch of teens accompanied by their parents were entering and leaving the building.

As the three made their way inside, they stood in the front lobby. The place was roaring with voices from parents, students, teachers, and other staff members. Jacob began looking around for any mammals he could recognize from 8th grade. Trinity however was frozen stiff. The interior of the school seemed even larger than the outside. The floor was polished showing the reflections of mammals and lights on the ceiling. Pictures of students on the football team and choir were encased in glass frames along the walls. Needless to say, this was all a bit intimidating for a small town mammal like herself.

"Class of 2023" Trinity murmured observing a picture of the graduated class from the year prior. There must've been at least 1,000 kids walking that day.

"Hm" Judy pondered raising a paw to her chin. She looked over at Jacob and then Trinity. The young mammal looked a bit nervous. Trinity looked over returning eye contact.

"Do we just follow where everyone else is headed..?" Trinity asked.

"It would be that simple but I need to make sure we're headed to the freshman orientation" Judy looked around. "We may have to go to the front office to ask."

"Freshman" Jacob sighed. "We're officially the bottom of the food chain" he smiled looking over at Trinity – almost as if wanting approval for his remark. She ignored him.

To the right of them, a mother goat and her daughter appeared through the front entrance. They stopped for a moment looking around. Perhaps they could point them in the right direction?

"Excuse me, do you happen to know where the freshman orientation is being held?" Judy asked eagerly.

"I think it's down in the C wing" the mother replied slightly startled. "We're actually trying to figure out which way that could be.." she pulled out a piece of paper from her pocket studying it. Jacob and Trinity both looked at the daughter who was halfway hidden behind her mom. She looked every bit as nervous as Trinity felt.

"Well let's look around" Judy insisted. "Do you mind if we tag along with you two? The more eyes we have the better."

The mom looked up from the paper. "Sure" she smiled. "I'm Samantha by the way, this is my daughter Luna." She looked down at the young goat standing beside her. No words came out of the teens mouth.

"I'm Judy" the bunny introduced. "This is my son Jacob and...my niece Trinity." Although Judy was used to Zootopia, a part of her was still on guard for how mammals would react to her – a small gray bunny saying that a teenage red fox was her son. The mother however didn't seem to care.

"It's nice to meet you all" Samantha replied. She turned her attention to the teens standing in front of her. "Are you two excited for your first year of high school?"

"Psh, more excited to see my friends again" Jacob spoke up confidently. Samantha nodded then looking over at the lykoi.

Trinity forced a smile on her muzzle looking off to the side. Although a part of her wanted to go to high school back home, she didn't have any real friends to look forward to seeing. All of the kids there treated her like an outcast due to her bloodline. With it being such a small community, there wasn't much diversity which meant a lack of understanding to different species.

"Hey" Jacob greeted the hiding mammal behind the mom. "Luna was it?"

The goat silently nodded but again said nothing. The teen fox was slightly taken back.

Samantha looked down beside her. "Luna is deaf" the she explained. "She can read lips and sign language." The mother lightly nudged her. "And she'll usually start speaking when she gets used to you."

"Oh.." Jacob said unsure of what else he could say. "Sorry..er.."

"Don't be sorry" the mother insisted. "I just don't want you to think she's ignoring you. She is also a bit shy."

Judy approached the young mammal.

"Nice to meet you Luna" she said softly with a smile.

The goat looked at Judy and slowly began moving her hooves. "Hello.." she said softly. It was clear she was used to communicating through sign language.

Trinity could sense the teens discomfort. "Hey um shouldn't we get to finding C wing or something?" She asked to help divert the attention. The parents nodded in agreement.

Orientation lasted about 2 hours between meeting all of the teachers and figuring out the school layout. Jacob and Trinity didn't have any of the same classes but shared the same lunch hour. It was bittersweet to say the least, because while the fox was annoying, having absolutely nobody she knew in any of her classes wouldn't help her anxiety at all.

After the orientation was over, Jacob wondered off to socialize with a few of his classmates from middle school. Trinity veered off to the side of the lobby to avoid any interactions with the large crowd.

She looked over to see Judy and the mother goat talking off to the side. Luna was standing there with her eyes wondering around. Trinity pondered for a moment on if she should go up and talk to her. In a school this big, it surely couldn't hurt to make at least one friend. Taking short breath, she began making her way over to the three.

"Hi" Trinity said nervously standing in front of the goat. "I'm..Trinity." She put emphasis on her words hoping that the mammal could read her lips. Luna stared blankly at her.

The goat began moving her hooves while simultaneously speaking. "Hello" she said quietly. It was so quiet it was near impossible to hear in the loud room.

"Are you..excited about school next Tuesday?" Trinity spoke again with added emphasis. She wasn't used to making new friends and admittedly, she'd never met a deaf mammal before. Truth be told, it felt like any other interaction.

The goat shook her head. "I could use another month of summer vacation" she said moving her hooves again. "Are you from here?"

"No, I'm from a small island out past the Canal District" Trinity answered.

Luna stood there processing the mammals response. "I see" she said. "You have really pretty fur by the way Trinity." she motioned pointing at her. "Very unique."

The lykoi blushed. "Thank you..although I'm not sure whether to thank my mom or dad for that..."

A look of confusion appeared on Lunas face.

"Never mind" Trinity quickly said. She had just met this mammal. Projecting the image of a poor girl with daddy issues wasn't the way she wanted to be seen to mammals – especially at a new school.

Before another word was spoken Judy came up beside them. "Trinity are you ready to go?" she asked. "I need to find Jacob and then we'll be heading out."

"Okay" Trinity said looking back at her potential new friend. "I guess we're going now Luna. Catch you later." She wasn't sure if the goat read her lips so she put up the peace sign indicating her departure.

Luna nodded. "Okay. See you later.. Trinity" she motioned. The teen went off to find her mother.

"She seems sweet" Judy said while making here way through the crowd. Trinity didn't reply.

'Hopefully she has a friend or two around here' she thought to herself.

The back door closed to the jeep as Jacob settled in. Trinity sat in the front again resting her chin on her paw. While orientation definitely could've been worse, she was relieved to finally be done with the day.

"Well you two" Judy spoke up as they began pulling out of the parking lot. "That wasn't too bad now was it?"

Jacob snickered. "Not for me at least" he looked up at Trinity in the rearview mirror. "You ready to be a freshman Trin?" He mocked.

The lykoi rolled her eyes. Obviously a jab to try and get a reaction out of her. "Yep" she replied briefly looking outside.

"Jacob" Judy sighed.

"Don't worry" the young fox continued. "I know a few kids that are Sophomores and Juniors. They'll have our backs inca-"

"I can take care of myself thanks" Trinity muttered under her breath. It was strange; Jacob was technically her age yet it felt like he was a younger sibling – never knowing when to stop talking.

The young fox leaned back in his seat with his usual grin across his muzzle. Judy glanced back at her son in the backseat. He really was like his father.

Before silence could seep in Judy turned up the radio. Trinity kept her attention on the scenery outside to distract her from the country song playing. Judy however was signing word for word.

'Mom did mention her being a country girl' she thought slightly smiling.

"Moooom!" Jacob whined in the backseat covering his ears. "Change the station please!"

This only caused the bunny to sing louder. Despite not being the biggest country fan herself, Jacobs misery made it well worth it to Trinity.

After the drive back home from orientation the lykoi went straight up to her room closing the door. She pulled out her phone dialing her mom. After a few rings she picked up.

"Hello" Silvia answered.

"Mom." Trinity spoke into the phone eagerly.

"How was orientation?" Silvia asked filled with excitement.

"It was...interesting I guess." she replied taking a seat on the side of the bed. "That school is so big I'll need GPS to find all of my classes."

Silvia laughed. "You've got jokes. "Also how is everything regarding the family? Are you settling in?"

Trinity sighed. "Aunt Judy is nice and Uncle Nick seems cool although I haven't really had the chance to talk to him."

"Are you and Jacob playing nice?"

"Sure if you want to call it that" Trinity dismissed gazing outside the bedroom window. Her mind began to wonder.

"Well Trin, I know we haven't spoken much about...your father" Silvia began. Trinitys' ears shot up. "But just be patient with it all...and please don't ask Judy or Nick about him."

A silence fell on the line.

"Trinity" the mother persisted. "Promise me you won't ask about him. We will sit down and talk when the time is right."

"Fine" Trinity said reluctantly. 'Whenever that is'

"Okay. I'm going to let you go now. Maybe go do something with the family, even if it's just watching a movie together." Silvia suggested optimistically. "I love you."

"Love you too mom" the teen replied seemingly inconsiderate to the idea. She hung up moments later.

Trinity sat in the room in silence. It was only 2:30pm yet she was contemplating staying in the room for the rest of the afternoon. Perhaps she could just live in this room with minimum contact. As appealing as that sounded in the moment, realistically she would get die of boredom by the 2nd day.

'Uncle Nick Wilde..who am I to you? A niece? Then why are we not even the same breed? Who was...my father?'

The mammal let out a deep breath.

'I have to talk to him..next time I get a chance. I'm going for it.'

A/N

Trinity may learn that some things are better left unknown..(If you read the previous fic you know what I mean) I'm excited for you all to see how this story evolves. I know it's a bit slower from my first but I want this one to have a deeper character ark and a steady pace. I aim to make these characters feel as real as possible. Luna will play a significant part in this story and there are a few characters that have yet to be revealed that some of you may love..and absolutely hate. We'll see how friendly..(or not) the students are at Savannah High School are soon.

See you in chapter 3
