A couple of days after their conversation with Zack, things seemed to go back to normal. The boys still stayed at home under Zack's rule, but when talking to one another there didn't seem to be any awkwardness or unease. It seemed to help lighten up Zack the most, with him returning to his usual cheerful self.
And with Zack being back to normal, it also included his random sporadic ideas for what he deemed was 'fun family bonding time'.
"Come on guys, Cloud saw this board game in the stores the other day and bought it. It looks really fun!" Zack said as held up a board game that had the name 'Chocobo Party Up' and displayed bright colorful cartoon chocobos on the front of the box.
"And you're sure that this isn't a children's game?" Zexion asked.
"Hey it says rated for ages 10 and up! That isn't just for little kids!" Zack declared.
"What about Cloud?" Riku asked, looking towards the blond sitting next to Zack. "This game is only for four people."
Cloud shrugged. "I don't mind watching. Zack and I can always switch out next game."
"Shouldn't the one who looks most like a chocobo play the chocobo game?" Saru asks with a slight smirk.
Cloud smirked back at Saru. "Says the one who was adopted by a chocobo."
Zack swung an arm around Cloud, pulling his head up against his own. "And this here is my chocobo! But I still wanna play first."
"Depending how long it takes…" Zexion said as he looked at the box. "...which can be between 30 to 45 minutes, it shouldn't be too hard to play two games in a row."
"Alright!" Zack cheered. "Then let's do it!"
They were only a half way into the game when the doorbell rang. Everyone stopped what they were doing, turning to look towards the door.
"Hey Saru?" Zack asked. "You don't have any deliveries today for animal supplies, do you?"
"No, and Cindy would have let me know if something was gonna show up early." Saru replied, studying the game board.
Cloud pushed himself up to his feet. "Well, since I'm not playing, you guys keep going and I'll go look."
"Just check the peephole first…" Zack said cautiously, side-eyeing the door.
There was a simple nod as Cloud made his way over, checking the peephole before letting out a low hum. "It's someone with long dark hair… red eyes."
Zack nearly fell out of his chair, catching himself before he hit the floor. "Black hair and red eyes!? Are… you sure?"
"Yes, I'm certain. Vampire scent too," Cloud stated.
Zack jumped off of his chair, nearly tripping as he ran over to the door. He moved Cloud aside as he swung the door open. "Whatever you want, Vincent, I'm not doing it!"
He was about to slam the door shut, but the man known as Vincent stopped it, pushing it back open. "Zack, I'm not here for anything like that."
"Then why are you here? Only wanted to say hi? Heck, if that's the case, why didn't you call me?"
Vincent blinked. "I don't have a phone."
"How do you not… ugh!" Zack sighed. "What are you here for then?"
"I've been looking for you Zack, for quite some time now. It was pretty hard at first… considering you changed your last name."
Riku looked over at Saru and Zexion, giving a confused expression. "Last name?" he said, speaking softly.
Saru locked eyes with Riku before barely whispering out, "Probably to distance from father."
The three turned back to the conversation, watching as Zack looked for a response.
"I was hard to find, so what? You can understand why I'd want to," he said after a moment. "What about it? If it's another 'request' from-"
"It's not that. It's the fact that I've been trying to find you for 58 years in order to bring you your other son."
Vincent stepped into the house and to the side as a shorter person followed behind him. His hair was a mix of dark purple and gray highlights. But his eyes were a surprising mismatch, one was blue and the other was blood red. Being born with red eyes was extremely rare for vampires, but heterochromia with one eye being red was pretty much unheard of.
But the most striking thing about the boy's appearance was how similar he looked to Riku.
"My… You mean there was… But you can't come here and say that. Not when…" Zack murmured.
"Zack… What's he referring to?" Zexion asked cautiously.
Saru was looking back and forth between the new arrival and Riku, visibly confused. "Other son?"
Ever since Vincent stepped into the house, he had been staring at the three boys, especially towards Riku. "So it was twins."
Riku breathed in deeply, trying not to let his heart race, but he couldn't help the racing thoughts that were pouring into his mind. "Zack, what the heck is going on?"
Slowly, Zack turned around, facing the boys with a rather uneasy expression. "I… It's not what you think… I mean…"
Vincent turned sharply to Zack. "Do you mean you never told them you were their father?"
A wave of silence filled the room. Zack looked like he was frozen, a deer caught in the headlights. The boys all were equally stunned, each of them feeling a similar level of uncertainty as they kept thinking over what Vincent had said. It echoed in their minds, playing on repeat over and over.
"Zack, you…" Saru began to say, confusion and betrayal etched in his expression as he faced Zack.
"Is he actually telling the truth?" Zexion asked Zack.
"You can't be serious, can you?" Riku added in.
"How long did you think you could keep doing this?"
"Did you ever consider saying anything every time we bittered talked about 'our father'?"
"Why were you never there for us when we were younger? Why only after we awakened did you show up?" Saru all but shouted.
Zack hesitated, looking distraught as his breathing picked up. "I didn't want to let it go that long. I thought I could… It wasn't like I could've-"
"Could've what?!" Riku shouted as he stood up. "Could have actually been there for us like a good father would?"
Zexion scoffed. "What reason could you have possibly thought that it was a good idea to pretend to be our brother, letting us believe our father was some irresponsible, uncaring piece of work?"
"If you hadn't LIED we could have been a proper family! If you weren't a COWARD, mom wouldn't be DEAD!" Saru jumped up from his chair screaming, slamming his hands down on the table, knocking the pieces over as sparks jumped from his hands.
All eyes were on Saruhiko, not anyone speaking a single word all while the small sparks attempted to grow into large flames, trying to consume the game board. Cloud was the only one of the group to move forward, trying to fan the flames out before they could spread any further.
Taking a step back, as if startled by his own actions, Saru sprinted off down the hall, opening and then slamming the basement door shut.
"Zack, if I may," Vincent started to say, but Zack was quick to cut him off.
"No! You just had to come here and say things didn't you?" Zack practically sobbed. "Everything was fine! I had it… it was fine!"
"How can you call this fine?" Riku asked. "You've lied to us our whole lives!"
"I didn't mean to!" Zack retorted. "I only did it because I had to… because I thought it was the best choice… for you guys to be happy."
Zexion sneered, "Some choices that turned out to be."
He was the next to leave the room, quieter than Saru had, and only going down as far as his room before he closed the door quickly behind him.
Zack then turned to Riku, giving him a desperate pleading look. "Riku… come on… please don't…"
Riku shook his head, turning away from Zack. "I don't know what to think anymore, or if I can even believe you."
When Riku walked down the hallway, he didn't decide to hide out in his room or the basement, instead choosing to step outside into the backyard. The most space and air he had, the better he thought it could help.
With all three boys gone from the room, Zack dropped to his knees. All of the inner turmoil and pain in chest ripped through him, breaking out into loud and heavy sobs. He was pulled into Cloud's arms as he continued to cry, curling himself up against the other's chest.
"Uncle Vincent?" the boy asked. "I don't understand what's going on."
Vincent sighed. "I believe there was more going on there than I had expected there to be. I'm sorry, Yozora, that it didn't go as we hoped it would."
"I know… But I want to try and help, even if I don't really know what to make of all this yet."
Cloud, who was now running his hair through Zack's hair, looked up at Yozora. "Zack's in no state to explain right now, so I will for him. To put it simply, Zack never told the other three that he was their father. All these years they've believed he was their older brother."
"And you knew?" Yozora asked.
Cloud nodded. "Zack confided in me years ago, and I swore to keep it secret for his benefit."
"I'm sorry…" Zack whimpered softly.
"Shh, deep breaths," Cloud whispered to him. "It's okay."
"N-no it's not… I s-screwed up," Zack mumbled, still having tears pour down his face.
"We'll figure out a way to fix this. Come on, let's get you off the floor," Cloud said as he helped Zack to his feet, guiding him over to sit down on the couch.
Yozora watched the two and then looked at Vincent. He then found himself staring down the hallway, wondering about the three he had seen before. "I think… I'll go and try to find the others. Maybe I can try talking to them."
"If you feel you must, then you should do so." Vincent replied.
"You'll probably have the easiest time with Riku. He's in the backyard… the other's have locked the door to the bedroom and basement," Cloud noted.
"Thank you," Yozora replied before he started walking down the hallway.
When he reached the end he found the door leading outside, where he found Riku sitting up against the wall right next to him.
Riku looked up at him in surprise, jumping to his feet as he slowly backed away. "You…"
"Uh, hi. This is a little awkward… meeting like this."
"Hmph, you're telling me."
"I guess I'll start off with the fact that Uncle Vincent didn't know I was a twin. He only told me that Zack had an older son named Zexion."
"So you knew? You grew up knowing that Zack was your… our father?"
Yozora nodded. "Yes, but Vincent didn't know where to find him. And we couldn't ask our mother's side of the family if they knew anything. As you probably can guess, they didn't want anything to do with me."
Riku stared at the other, really taking the time to notice the one red eye he had. Being born with red eyes wasn't only an uncommon trait for vampires, but it was also seen as a bad omen. Usually a vampire born with red eyes would result in the parents divorcing with one parent being forced to raise the child, most commonly with it being the father.
"So how'd you end up with that guy then? He also has red eyes."
"Uncle Vincent said that when I was born I was given to his father since Zack was nowhere to be found. He then gave me to Vincent, probably because we both were seen as 'bad omens' so why not put us together," Yozora explained. "But he did a good job taking care of me over these years."
"And what did he tell you about Zack?"
"Told me plenty of stories from when they were growing up together, so I had a good idea of what he would be like. But I swear that I didn't know about you, or the other one, only the situation with Zexion"
"Saruhiko," Riku corrected. "And… I think this is all a lot to take in."
Yozora nodded in agreement. "Yeah, same here. It isn't everyday you think you're going to meet your father and older brother, only to find out you also have a twin and a younger brother too."
"It's different for me. I knew Saru and Zexion were my brothers. We've lived together all these years with that knowledge, but it was Zack who wasn't our brother. He's… I'm still feeling conflicted."
Riku tried to hold himself together, trying not to let his emotions get the best of him. He couldn't help it however as tears formed in the corners of his eyes. Too much information was flooding his brain, and before he could even realize what he was doing, he found himself hugging Yozora.
"I-I have a brother… another brother," he whispered.
"A twin," Yozora corrected, hugging Riku back.
"Vampire twins aren't very common," Riku replied.
"Yeah, but guess that makes it more interesting to learn about one another. And about Zack, maybe before judging him, you could hear him out?"
"I know, and I… I'm willing to hear Zack out if he has anything to say. I'm still not sure what to feel about him overall, but I'll listen."
As they pulled out of the hug, Yozora smiled. "Good. Now what about the other two?"
"Zexion may be easier to deal with first. Saru… he can be a bit much at times, and given what you heard him say, he's going to be really stubborn to try and convince."
"Then lead the way, I'll follow."
Together, Riku and Yozora headed back into the house, heading back down the hall towards Zexion's room. When they got there, Riku breathed in deeply before knocking lightly on the door.
Much to his surprise, Zexion opened it fairly quickly. "Yes?"
"Zexion, I don't know how you feel towards this," Riku started to say, glancing towards the end of the hall. They were still fairly close to the front of the house, and he had no idea if Zack or Cloud could hear them.
"But," he continued. "Yozora talked to me, and I think we should try and hear what he has to say."
Zexion nodded. "I agree. I feel I may have been rash in my leave. With the sudden revelation and Saru's outburst, I only followed suit. But I do wish to hear what Zack has to say."
"Okay good, we're on the same page. But that leaves…"
Both Riku and Zexion looked towards the end of the hall that led to the basement. While each of them had their reasons for being upset towards Zack, Saru was probably the most frustrated. Given what Riku and Zexion had come to learn about Saru's past, it was clear trying to convince him would be the hardest task. But they pressed forward to the door, with Yozora in tow, going to give it their best shot.
