Johann's Diary - September 1st, 1942
I have not written for quite a while because of the hasty preparations I have been helping to make. Daily the SS take away more people. Only Major Plagge's workers and their families are safe. Major Plagge tries daily to hire workers on and he often succeeds. I have much love for my darling. After the war I will marry her. If we both survive. God willing we will. I pray we will both come through this war with our conscience and morals intact. I will never give up my faith. Not ever for anyone! And after the war I pray I will be called to testify to what I saw these monsters do.-Johann
The Secret Place- September 1st, 1942
I've brought food, Rivka. Thank you, Johann. So good to see you finally, liebling. And you, Johann, as they embraced. We've both been so busy of late. I'd like to thank you for speaking to my father and the council the way you did. I was glad to, Rivka. It must have been hard for you to speak of it again, Johann. Yes, but it had to be done. What is going on makes me sick, Rivka. You look tired, Johann. Come, sit here by me. We still have a little while. Sometimes what I've seen makes me want to cry and cry and never stop. Is that cowardly? No, darling. Sometimes I feel the same. It's nothing to be ashamed of, Johann. Try not to worry. Sometimes I wake screaming because of what I've seen. Thankfully none of the other men have caught on to exactly what the cause of them is. I will pray they stop, Johann. I pray we both survive this war and we can both find a peaceful place to call home. So do I, Rivka. I love you, Johann. And I love you, Rivka. Meine liebling. I must go now before someone comes, Johann. Alright, Rivka. Will you come see me again soon? As soon as I can, Johann. Take care of yourself. Keep an eye on your family, Rivka. If you see even one SS man, hide at once. Don't worry we will, Johann. Give my love to your parents. I will, Johann.
