Rivka's Diary September 20th, 1942
Things in the ghetto have gotten worse of late. Thank God for Johann and Major Plagge's protection. We've hidden more times than I can count. The mothers keep their children out of sight as much as possible and Mama and I do the same with Hannah. I pray God that they all survive this war and live. I know what Johann told me is true and I pray none of the children become a victim. I pray one day we will have our own land away from these murderers. The land of the olive tree and the orange. May it be so.- Rivka
Johann's Diary September 20th,1942
The work we are doing goes on despite disruptions from the war. We've seen more and more SS in our area. I don't know where I will go, but I most certainly will not return to Germany when this war is over. If others knew I was thinking this way, they would call me a traitor, but I don't care. Sad to say, but I am ashamed of my country. Ashamed daily! And too of the majority of my countrymen and women. When this madness descended upon us they did nothing or worse, went along. Heaven help me if someone finds this, but I despise everything this vile party stands for. They are murderers. God is ashamed of his creation this day! The guilty ones will not escape his wrath and punishment. There is not a hell deep enough for these wicked people! If I survive, I will tell the world what I have seen. They may not all believe, but it must be told. Especially to those too young to know or remember.-Johann
