One year after Silence, Clarice Starling is feeling listless, but still driven by duty. Meanwhile, Dr. Lecter finds he thinks of the fledgling agent often, and decides to make contact; it is an encounter which results in an unfathomable covenant, altering their lives for years. Both hope to get some version of what they really want, if they indeed, know what they really want.

19. Chapter 19

A quick note on timelines and ages in In Profundis:

In the books, as I'm sure many of you know, Dr. Lecter was born January 20, 1933, and Clarice was born December 23, 1967. Tbh, I'm not entirely sure if that's according to the movies or the books. But we'll go with that for now.

As for timelines, I always find it tricky to place it all correctly, as I personally have come across no exact dates. But Hannibal references Bill Clinton's scandal with Monica Lewinski, which broke out in 1998. So we'll say the events of Hannibal take place 1998. Because we know it takes place seven years after The Silence of the Lambs, we'll place those events in 1991.

In Profundis, on the other hand, begins the year 1993, placing the events of The Silence of the Lambs in the previous year, 1992, so just a year later than canon.

As for their ages. If Lecter were born in 1933, it would make him 60 in Silence. I'm not sure he's even supposed to be that old in Silence, but either way, it doesn't make sense to me, and I don't like it. If other people are into that age, I'm sorry. You're free to imagine them however you want. Maybe it's my experience , but men in their forties are already really starting to slow tf down by a large margin. So if any of you like the thought of him doing any vigorous pounding, he ain't no sixty, in that case. I digress. I have written him to be younger. In In Profundis, Hannibal's birthday is January 20, 1948. That makes him 45 at the start of the events. Clarice's birthday is in December 23, 1967 (original works just fine), making her 26. So we have a pretty delightful age difference still, if you're into that. 45 and 26? Yeah, that's plenty yummy to me, but without things getting weird and geriatric. Yay!
