Chapter 8
Meanwhile, inside a toy shop on the streets of London, Fidget is gathering up the last of the doll uniforms and hats, stuffing them into his bag. He snatches one more uniform and shoves it inside the bag as well.
Pulling out the list, Fidget reviews it.
"Get the following: tools, check. I got tools, gears, double check." The handicapped bat puts checkmarks next to tools and gears.
"I got gears, girl…no, didn't get girl." Fidget erases checkmark next to girl.
"Uniforms, I got plenty of uniforms." He chuckles but is interrupted by Toby's howling from outside.
"Oh, no, oh no, I got to hide! Got to hide!" Fidget exclaimed, quickly snatching up the last of the palace guard hats and stuffs them in. Snatching up the bag, Fidget runs off, retreating to a hiding spot. Unbeknownst to him, Fidget drops Ratigan's list.
Toby stood outside the shop as Basil jumps onto the window sill.
"Splendid job, Toby!" Basil praised the hound.
Olivia steps forward. She held out her hands, waiting expectantly for the sleuth to catch her.
Basil rolls his eyes and held out his hands. Olivia jumps off from Toby's nose and she lands into Basil's arms.
Basil looked concerned for one, brief minute, before frowning. He sets Olivia down and nudges her, motioning for her to move along.
Bianca is next. Basil held out his arms and catches her. Bernard follows and Bianca does the same. He lands safely into his partner's arms.
Dawson is the last one standing. Toby growls as Dawson tipped his hat and starts to walk away. Toby huffs, causing the doctor to fly off and roll onto the window sill, bumping into Basil.
He looks genuinely concerned before glancing up at Toby.
"Now, Toby, sit." He said sternly.
Toby just stood there, smiling and wagging his tail.
Basil marched over, impatient.
"Toby, sit!" He commanded, pointing his finger.
"Sit, Toby!" Olivia commands, politely.
Surprisingly, Toby obeys the Scottish mouse.
"Good boy," said Basil, side-eyeing Olivia.
"If you'll excuse me," He walks past the girl. Bernard and Bianca frown in Basil's direction.
"You'd be good now," Olivia said to Toby. "We are going to find my father."
"We'll be back." Bianca adds.
Meanwhile, Basil hums to himself as he inspects the premises.
"A-ha!" He exclaimed, spotting a tiny hole in the window.
"Here is our friend's entrance," The detective points.
"Well, but Basil…how can he fit into such a tiny…" Dawson began to say but is interrupted when Basil picked up Dawson's arm.
"Observe, doctor." Basil sticks Dawson's finger into the hole and Dawson opens the round window.
"Fascinating," said Bernard.
"How very clever," said Bianca.
"Basil, you astound me," Dawson remarked.
Basil silences Dawson and he enters the toy store, with Olivia, Bianca and Bernard following behind. Dawson is the last one to climb inside. He shuts the door behind him.
The group looks around, taking in their surroundings and a vast number of toys.
While searching for signs of Fidget, Dawson bumps into something.
"I beg your pardon, I…" Dawson apologized, tipping his hat, only to see a tall, porcelain doll.
"Oh, my." Dawson is amazed by all the toys in the store.
"Upon my word, I've never seen so many toys." He remarked.
"I'll say, can't get anything like this in New York." Bernard interjects.
"Behind any of which, could lurk a bloodthirsty assassin." Basil cuts in, whisper hissing.
"So, please you three, be very careful."
Dawson, Olivia, Bianca and Bernard share looks with one another.
"He does have a point," Bianca agreed.
Basil sneaks underneath the porcelain doll. Backed up against the leg, Basil looks around and moves on.
The others follow.
While keeping an eye out for Fidget, they see a rocking horse and grinning Jack-In The-Boxes. The adults and Olivia climb up a ladder. After reaching the top, they tread lightly. Olivia sees a fireman band toy.
With curiosity, Olivia walks over and turns it on. The crashing of the cymbals and loud band music startles the adults. Bianca screams and Bernard holds her, while Dawson jumps into Basil's arms, frightened.
"What on Earth?" Bernard asks, looking around.
"Where is it coming from?" Bianca inquired.
Seeing the source, Basil puts Dawson down, agitated. He hops over and pulled the lever down, shutting the toy off.
"Please…quiet!" Basil commanded Olivia, restraining his temper.
"Don't let this girl out of your sights." Basil instructs Dawson and the two New Yorkers.
He leaves and Dawson salutes. Olivia copies him.
This amuses Bernard and Bianca.
"Now, Olivia dear, stay close." Dawson advised the Flaversham youngster.
"We can't lose you." Bernard adds.
They catch up to Basil. As the quintet crossed a checkerboard, Fidget is watching them, unbeknownst to the mice.
"Hmm, checkmate." Basil shoves a chess piece towards Dawson.
"Was that necessary?" Bianca asked, glaring.
"A-ha!" Basil peers through his magnifying glass, ignoring Bianca. He sees Fidget's foot prints.
"Evidence of our peg-legged adversary."
Basil trails along the footprints, until he came to a stop. Looking up, Basil sees dolls unclothed. He frowns, as he stood up.
"Hmm, how very odd." Basil remarked.
"What is it, Basil?" Dawson whisper asked, while Bianca and Bernard looked curious.
"Isn't it painfully obvious, doctor?" Basil questioned. "These dolls have been stripped of their uniforms."
"And…not by any child, either." Basil adds; as he, Olivia, Bianca and Bernard examine Fidget's footprints. Basil and Olivia meet their gazes.
The detective looks around. Peering through his magnifying glass, something caught his eye.
"Hello,"
Basil goes over. He sees that the toys are missing their gears.
"Someone has taken the liberty of removing the clockwork mechanism from these toys." Basil mused.
"And apparently went to town." Bernard comments.
Wide-eyed, Fidget took off like a rocket. He's about to put a scheme into motion.
Suddenly, Dawson and Bianca spotted Fidget's list.
Picking it up, the duo review the document, while Bernard and Olivia watched them.
"Basil…" Dawson began to say.
"Please, I'm trying to concentrate." Basil interrupts the doctor.
"But, Basil. I…"
"You must listen," Bianca insists. "We found…"
The group is interrupted when they hear a melodic tune. Unbeknownst to them all, Fidget started up the toys simultaneously as a diversion.
"What just happened?" Bernard asks, confused.
Everyone looks around, as various toys came to life. A puppy pops out of a black top hat, yipping twice. A mechanical Easter bunny closing and opening an egg with a baby chick rolls by on a wagon. A fiddler is playing a fiddle by the carousel. More other toys came to life, while a Jack-in-the-Box cackles.
As the adults are distracted, Olivia sees bubbles coming from the other side of the shop. Delighted, Olivia wanders off.
She sees the source for the bubbles: a toy Dumbo the Flying Elephant that's blowing them from its trunk. Behind Dumbo is a blue and pink baby doll cradle, rocking side by side.
"Say, where did Olivia go?" Bernard asks Bianca in a hushed tone. He and his partner look around.
Olivia approaches it. Peering curiously, she delicately pulls back the blanket, expecting to find an adorable baby doll. Unfortunately for her, it's Fidget wearing a baby pink bonnet. He lunged at the Flaversham girl, snarling. Olivia screams in horror.
Dawson, Bernard, Bianca and Basil whirled around in fright, wide-eyed and alarmed.
"Oh, no!" Bianca gasped.
"Olivia!" Dawson exclaimed.
"Gotcha!" Fidget declared, holding Olivia by her scarf, who wriggles. The handicapped bat shoves Olivia into the bag and takes off, clutching it.
"Quickly, you three!" Basil shouted. He starts to run. Dawson, Bernard and Bianca follow.
"Look out!" Basil yelps, as rolling tambourine pursues them, Bernard and Bianca screaming. The group starts running for their lives. Quickly moving out of harm's way, they land on a Round the World box. Unfortunately for the mice, the tall porcelain doll from earlier tips over. The quartet began to run.
"Look out, below!" Bianca shouts.
"Timber!" Bernard yells.
The doll lands face down after the mice escape. The doll's face smattered, porcelain pieces scattering about. Half of her face rolls over to Dawson, scaring him.
Meanwhile, Fidget winds up a toy knight on a horse, giggling. It darts off rapidly, much to Fidget's delight.
Bianca, Basil, Dawson and Bernard catch up, but find themselves face-to-face with the knight. Basil grabs Bianca out of harm's way. However, Bernard and Dawson get picked up by the lance.
"Bianca, help!" Bernard shouts.
"Bernard!" Bianca cried.
Hanging from the lance, Dawson and the gray mouse land smack dab on a target board, like a dart.
"Basil, watch out!" Bianca yells.
Basil looks over and his head gets smashed between the fireman's cymbals. He's thrown into a dizzying spell and falls back on several marbles, causing them to fly towards Dawson and Bernard. They dodged the marbles as best they could. But, two hit Dawson and Bernard in the face. Bianca rushes over to help them.
Fidget laughs, reveling in the mayhem he unleashed. He jumps towards the exit. When Fidget opens the door; Toby growls, barking. Frightened, Fidget shuts the door. He jumps onto a cash register, going in a different direction, heading to another exit.
"Stop, you fiend!" Basil hollered, running. He gets on a toy horse with a spring underneath. Basil hops, in pursuit of Ratigan's henchman. Reaching the top shelf, Basil lands.
Racing up along a large pile of blocks (with Fidget on the opposite side), Basil quickly catches up to the bat. Unfortunately, as Basil reached the top, trying to capture Fidget…the blocks and other toys stumble and come crashing down; with Basil falling.
Fidget hangs from an open window, letting out a guttural laugh. Tossing the bag onto the roof, Fidget climbs out. Picking up the bag, Fidget hops away. Olivia's muffled cries for help can be heard.
"I got the gears, I got the tools, I got the uniforms, I got the girl!" Fidget sings, laughing in triumph. He heads back to Ratigan's lair.

Thank you to Sarah West 94402343 for the review, as well as the favorite and follow. I like your story idea and hopefully down the line, we can make it happen. I hope you enjoyed this chapter and more along the way.
Up next, Bernard, Bianca, and Dawson find Basil. Basil chews them out for not watching Olivia, only for Bianca and Bernard to reprimand him. Basil calms down and soon discovers the list Fidget left behind (after overhearing Dawson, Bernard and Bianca).
