Chapter 2

Tao entered his chamber; he couldn't shake the whirlwind of emotions and thoughts that raced through his mind. The events of the past few days had transformed him from a blacksmith to facing gruesome death to a wielder of cosmic power entrusted with the responsibility of protecting an entire sector. The weight of his new role, coupled with the memories of Elisabetta and the injustice he had suffered, lingered in his heart.

His gaze fell upon the bed, where a carefully arranged outfit awaited his attention. The intricately embroidered fabric and meticulous craftsmanship bespoke the effort that went into its creation. Alongside the clothing lay a data crystal, Tao picked it up, a projection of Anya appeared from it and spoke;

"Since clothes are important to you, I had some made for you, however, do not feel the need to wear them in my presence. I prefer seeing you without them."

A subtle smile played on Tao's lips as he considered the gesture, appreciating the consideration behind the thoughtful gift. The warmth of gratitude welled within him, but it was soon followed by a pang of guilt. He felt a conflict within – a blend of appreciation for Anya's kindness and a hesitation that stemmed from his relationship with Elisabetta.

Tao turned and approached the lantern battery that Anya had mentioned. Its soft glow emitted an otherworldly energy that seemed to resonate with the green light of his power ring. Tao held up his hand, and the ring responded to his will, projecting the Green Lantern symbol onto the battery.

"In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil's might, beware my power, Green Lantern's light," Tao recited the oath, and a surge of energy flowed from the ring to the battery.

As the ritual concluded, the lantern battery disintegrated and Tao felt a power surge through him and felt a deeper connection to the ring, as if it was an extension of himself. The events leading up to this moment felt like a distant dream, and yet the power he now possessed was undeniably real, Tao fell onto the bed and went to sleep.

Tao looked up at the grey skies as he found himself wandering through a vast, surreal garden. The vibrant colours of flora painted an otherworldly landscape, and the air was filled with an intoxicating fragrance that seemed to beckon him forward.

As he strolled beneath towering blossoms, his eyes caught a flash of red in the distance. There she was, Elisabetta, adorned in a scarlet dress with a hood that concealed much but revealed the allure of mystery. A sense of urgency overcame him, and he called out to her. Elisabetta turned, a mischievous smile playing on her lips, and dashed into a labyrinthine maze.

Tao quickened his pace, the twists and turns of the maze proving to be a puzzle that challenged his pursuit. Her laughter echoed through the hedges, each call of his name drawing him deeper into the enigmatic corridors. But every time he drew near, she slipped away like a phantom.

Turning another corner, Tao discovered her abandoned red dress, a silent testament to the ephemeral nature of his chase. A sense of unease gripped him as he ventured further, the labyrinth leading him to a startling scene – Elisabetta, straddling Dupan and sharing an intimate kiss, they turned to look at Tao and laughed. The sight pierced through him, a surge of conflicting emotions rising to the surface.

Fuelled by a surge of jealousy, Tao lunged at the entwined figures, only to watch them dissolve into nothingness. The maze transformed into a pool of deep, crimson blood, and he found himself struggling to stay afloat. The viscous liquid threatened to consume him, dragging him into an abyss of despair.

Just as Tao felt the weight of impending darkness, Anya emerged from beneath the blood, her presence a lifeline in the macabre sea. With a steadying touch, she anchored him, her eyes locking onto his in a silent understanding. Together, they ascended from the pool of blood into the abyss, enveloped by the surreal green glow.

Tao awoke with a start, the vivid imagery lingering in his mind like an elusive whisper of the subconscious. The dream had woven a tapestry of emotions, leaving him with a sense of disquiet that lingered even as the waking world reclaimed its hold.

The sun shined on Tao's face as he stared at the unfamiliar surroundings of Oa. The architecture, the alien landscapes visible through the windows, and the presence of other Green Lanterns undergoing their training sessions—all of it was a stark contrast to the life he had known on Earth. He got ready and made his way to learn how to use the powers he had been blessed with, Anya awaited him in the training area, her emerald eyes radiating a gentle glow. "Good morning, Tao. Ready for another day of training?"

Tao nodded, determined. "I want to learn everything I can, as quickly as possible."

Anya smiled. "Your enthusiasm is commendable, how quickly you learn is not up to me, it is something only you can control Tao, but know that work in haste is akin to a work of waste."

Tao stood straighter "I will not let you down"

Anya nodded "Today, we'll focus on refining your constructs and exploring the limits of your willpower. The Green Lantern ring responds to the strength of your resolve and creativity. Let's see what you can create."

Throughout the day, Tao honed his abilities under Anya's guidance. He created constructs ranging from protective shields to intricate weapons, each manifestation a testament to his growing mastery over the ring. Anya observed with a mixture of pride and curiosity.

As the sun of Oa began to set, signalling the end of their training session, Anya spoke, "You've made remarkable progress, Tao."

Tao, catching his breath, replied, "I want to be the best Green Lantern I can be. I want to make a difference."

Anya's expression turned serious. "Your determination is admirable, but remember, being a Green Lantern comes with challenges beyond wielding power. You'll face threats that test not only your strength, not only your mind, but also your convictions. Stay true to your purpose."

As Tao prepared to return to his chamber for the night, he couldn't shake the lingering thoughts of Elisabetta. The promise he had made to protect her echoed in his mind. Despite the vastness of space and the cosmic responsibilities placed upon him, his connection to his past remained a driving force.

Back in his chamber, Tao gazed at the stars through the window. A mix of emotions swirled within him—determination, grief, and an unyielding resolve to bring justice to those who had wronged him, and others like him.

As Tao settled into a restless sleep, the Guardians observed from their highchairs on Oa. Gilet and Carro continued their discussion from the day before.

"He's adapting remarkably fast. Anya's influence is undeniable," remarked Gilet.

Carro nodded, "There is something that does not feel right about him, I cannot shake the feeling."

Gilet sighed, "I feel it too!"

Back on Earth, in Kentucky, the sun cast its golden hues over the landscape as Elisabetta and her father, Master Marco Romano, prepared to depart from the only home they had known. The plantation, once a symbol of prosperity, had been sold to a wealthy buyer after the Romano's came back to find all their slaves killed, and the two of them were now making the journey to a new life in Iowa.

The air was filled with sorrow as they packed the last of their belongings onto the carriage. Master Romano, weakened by the blow to the head from the outlaw who attacked them, sat in a chair on the porch, overseeing the final preparations.

"Elisabetta, my love," he called out to his daughter. She approached, sadness in her eyes.

"Yes, Father?" Elisabetta replied, her dark eyes fixed on the man who had raised her.

Master Romano took a shaky breath, his frailty evident. "I know this move is a significant change for you, my love. But it's necessary. The plantation is no longer sustainable or safe, and I want you to have a chance at a better life in Iowa."

Elisabetta nodded, understanding the practicalities of the situation, but her thoughts were elsewhere. She couldn't shake the memories of Tao, the forbidden love that had blossomed.

"Father, I understand the need to leave, but there's something I must tell you," Elisabetta began, her voice steady but filled with conviction.

Master Romano looked at his daughter, concern etched on his face. "What is it, Elisabetta? You can tell me anything."

Taking a deep breath, Elisabetta spoke, "Father, there is someone I love deeply."

"Oh yeah, who is this gentleman?" replied her father with excitement,

"It's Tao. We kept our love a secret, but now... now I want to be with him, Father."

Master Romanos eyes widened with surprise, and then he sighed, realising the complexity of Elisabetta's feelings. "My love, I understand that emotions run deep, especially in difficult times. But you must know that Tao is no longer a part of our lives. He faced a terrible fate, I have been informed it was DuPan that killed the red blacksmith, and you have to accept that he is no longer with us."

Elisabetta's eyes welled up with tears, but she refused to let them fall. "No, Father, I cannot believe he's gone. I feel his presence in my heart. I just know he is alive somewhere; I want to wait for him, and I want to marry him when he returns."

Master Romano reached out and gently cupped Elisabetta's cheek. "I wish things were different, my love. But we must move forward. Your future is important, and I want you to find happiness. I would always say follow your heart, but it cannot be with Tao, dead men do not come back and that is something you must accept."

Elisabetta looked away, torn between her feelings for Tao and her father's wishes, she let out a deep beath.

Master Romano sighed, realizing the depth of his daughter's pain. "Very well, my love. I only want what's best for you. If Tao is indeed alive, may fate reunite you. But we must focus on the journey ahead and the new life awaiting us in Iowa."

As the carriage rolled away from the plantation, Elisabetta stared out of the window, a silent vow echoing in her heart. She would wait for Tao, no matter the challenges that lay ahead.

Amidst the vibrant halls of Oa, Tao found himself surrounded by fellow Green Lanterns in training. The diverse array of alien faces reflected the vastness of the cosmos that the Green Lantern Corps protected. As Tao absorbed the atmosphere, he noticed a group of Lanterns engaged in a lively discussion.

Aquil, a human like being, blonde haired, clean shaven, muscular and boastful Lantern, Faroo, a creature with a fiery mane, and Jinqa, a purple skinned female humanoid with a tail, were animatedly conversing. The moment Tao entered their field of vision, Aquil's eyes narrowed, and a mischievous grin crossed his face.

"Well, well, look who we have here. The guardian's pet," Aquil jeered, his companions Faroo and Jinqa joining in with mocking laughter.

Tao remained composed; his focus unwavering on his training. Ignoring the taunts, he continued towards his designated training area. Aquil, however, seemed determined to provoke a reaction.

"What's the matter, rookie? Think you're better than us?" Aquil taunted, circling Tao with an air of arrogance.

Tao maintained his silence, recognizing the futility of engaging in meaningless confrontation. However, Aquil's persistence escalated as he threw a swift punch towards Tao, aiming to provoke a reaction.

Tao absorbed the blow staggering backwards but did not react. Aquil's friends erupted in laughter, believing their comrade had succeeded in intimidating the newcomer.

"Aww, what's the matter, Human? Too scared to fight back? Going to run and cry to your guardian girlfriend" Aquil sneered, taunting further.

Still silent, Tao stood his ground, refusing to be drawn into a senseless conflict. Aquil, Faroo, and Jinqa continued to mock and belittle him, their laughter echoing through the training area.

The room fell silent as Anya entered. Her emerald presence commanded attention, and the mischievous grins on Aquil, Faroo, and Jinqa's faces faded.

"What's going on here?" Anya's voice echoed through the halls; her gaze fixed on the group.

Aquil, attempting to appear innocent, spoke up, "Just giving the rookie here a warm welcome, Guardian."

Anya's eyes narrowed, perceiving the underlying tension. "Tao, is this true?"

Tao nodded, his gaze steady. "I'm here to learn."

Anya studied the situation and saw a mark on Tao's face, she then addressed Aquil and his companions with a stern expression. "Bullying your fellow Lanterns is not the way of the Green Lantern Corps. We are a team, bound by a common purpose. Aquil, Faroo, Jinqa, as experienced rookies, I expect better from you."

Aquil, Faroo, and Jinqa exchanged uneasy glances, realising the gravity of their actions. Anya continued, "If you seek competition, let it be in a controlled and honourable manner. Aquil, since you seem so eager to give Tao a warm welcome, I'm scheduling a duel between you and Tao."

Aquil's eyes widened, a mixture of surprise and smugness crossing his face. "A duel? Fine, I'll show this noob his place."

Anya's voice remained firm. "The duel will take place tomorrow at the training grounds. Prepare yourselves, and remember, the Green Lantern Corps thrives on unity and cooperation, not division."

As Aquil, Faroo, and Jinqa dispersed, Anya turned her attention back to Tao. "You handled the situation well, Tao. They have been in training for three years and still are unable to pass the final test. Tomorrow's duel will be an opportunity to showcase your skills and discipline. A test. Be ready."

Tao nodded; his determination unwavering. The challenges of training extended beyond mastering the power ring, and Tao was about to face a test that would reveal not only his combat prowess but also his commitment to the principles of the Green Lantern Corps and where he stood compared to the other trainees.

"You cannot allow anyone to behave in such a manner Tao, with you or anyone else. If you accept or tolerate any form of injustice, you can never apply justice" Anya advised Tao as they began their training,

"I understand and I am sorry" replied Tao,

"I do not blame you; Aquill has been a rookie for three years for a reason, never rush to action but always make a stand before action is needed." she added,

Tao nodded his head,

"Now protect yourself and duel" ordered Anya,

After four hours of training Tao in duelling practice, both Anya and Tao stood across from each other with beads of sweat dripping from their foreheads,

"You fight well, Tao. Your instincts are strong, but there's more to being a Green Lantern than physical prowess," Anya remarked,

Tao nodded, catching his breath. "I will get my revenge tomorrow"

"It is not revenge you should seek, it is justice" advised Anya,

Tao furrowed his brow. "Isn't revenge a form of justice?"

Anya's gaze softened. "Justice is about balance, not revenge. It's about breaking the cycle of evil, not perpetuating it."

Tao stared at Anya for a while and asked "Why? Why are you so kind to me? Why do you help me?"

Anya placed a hand on Tao's shoulder. "I've seen darkness too, Tao. Remember the strength of a Green Lantern lies in their ability to channel that darkness into a force for good. We protect, we inspire, we teach, we learn, and we lead by example."

Tao looked at Anya with a mix of emotions, "This feels like a dream, a few days ago I was a blacksmith in Kentucky, I do not know what is real, I don't know what to believe, I don't even know who I am"

"This is real, you are a green lantern, believe in you, because if you don't believe, no one else will. If it helps, I believe in you" answered Anya,

Tao smiled and nodded in agreement,

"Let's finish here, you will need rest, we meet tomorrow in the morning at the training grounds" advised Anya.

Later that night, the soft glow of the green power ring cast a subtle illumination in Tao's room as he awoke to an unexpected visitor. Anya, her usually composed demeanour now tinged with an unusual intensity, stood by the foot of his bed. Her emerald eyes bore into him as if searching for something hidden.

"Tao," she spoke, her voice a whisper that carried a weight of urgency. "I need to know your weaknesses."

Tao, still groggy from sleep, rubbed his eyes and sat up. "My weaknesses? What's going on, Anya?"

Anya paced the room, her every movement deliberate. "We face formidable adversaries, and I need to ensure you are prepared. Tell me, what are you afraid of? What weaknesses do you carry?"

Tao scratched his head, bemused by the sudden inquiry. "Well, I don't know... lions and bears, maybe?"

Anya's eyes narrowed; her focus unyielding. "Lions and bears. Interesting choices. But I mean deeper, Tao. What fears reside within your soul? What vulnerabilities could be exploited by our enemies?"

Tao frowned, the seriousness of the conversation sinking in. "I... I don't know, Anya. I've faced many hardships..."

Anya stopped her pacing and fixed her gaze on him. "Everyone has vulnerabilities, Tao. It's not a weakness to acknowledge them; it's strength. We must confront our fears to overcome them."

Tao, sensing the gravity of the situation, sighed. "Elisabetta...I suppose... losing those I care about. That terrifies me."

"Nothing of interest" she replied and with those words, Anya left Tao's room. Tao sat back in bed, confused by the unexpected and strange encounter.

In the distant reaches of Sector 1417, where the cosmic tapestry weaved tales of conquest and destruction, the warships of the Viper Kingdom descended upon the unsuspecting planet of Tirmeen. As the vessels touched down, the soldiers of the Viper Kingdom spilled out like a torrent, clad in armour adorned with a distinctive red crystal at its heart. The crystalline core pulsed with an ominous energy, a harbinger of the impending doom.

The soldiers, armed with deadly spears, unleashed bolts of red energy upon the inhabitants of Tirmeen. The onslaught was not a clash of armies, nor a strategic manoeuvre, but rather a merciless execution. The air crackled with the malevolent discharge of energy as the soldiers systematically targeted the defenceless denizens of the planet.

Amidst the chaos, a formidable figure emerged from the largest warship, his armour bearing the scars of countless battles. A seasoned warrior surveyed the devastation with a stoic gaze. His orders cut through the clamour, a harsh reminder of the ruthlessness that characterized the Viper Kingdom's conquests.

"Remind the soldiers," he commanded, his voice echoing with authority, "The Emperor's decree stands – eliminate the males and gather the females."

The general's words were met with a dutiful acknowledgment from his subordinate. The soldiers, driven by an unwavering loyalty to their Emperor, continued their grim task. The ominous red crystals embedded in their armour glowed with an eerie brilliance, casting an otherworldly pallor over the scene of destruction.

As the Viper Kingdom claimed dominion over Tirmeen, the once-thriving planet now echoed with the cries of anguish, a haunting testament to the relentless advance of the conquering force. The Viper Empire's shadow extended further into the cosmos, leaving another conquered world in its wake.
