Chapter 3

On Oa, the training grounds buzzed with anticipation. Lanterns in training gathered to witness the duel between Tao and Aquil. The air was thick with tension as the combatants faced each other in the designated arena.

Anya, overseeing the proceedings, addressed the assembled crowd. "Lanterns, today we witness a duel between two promising trainees. Remember, the strength of the Green Lantern Corps lies not only in individual power but also in unity. Let this duel be a test of skill, discipline, and also the ability to work together."

As Tao and Aquil squared off, the crowd fell silent. Tao's eyes reflected a calm determination, while Aquil exuded confidence mixed with a hint of arrogance. The duel commenced, and the two Lanterns circled each other, gauging their opponent's moves.

Aquil, eager to impose himself, lunged at Tao with a series of aggressive strikes. Tao, however, moved with grace and precision, effortlessly dodging Aquil's attacks. The crowd watched in awe as Tao's movements seemed almost choreographed, a dance of willpower and skill.

Anya observed from the sidelines, her emerald gaze focused on the unfolding duel. She saw not just the physical prowess but the underlying essence of Tao's connection with the ring. It was as if the very fabric of willpower responded to his every move.

As the duel progressed, Tao began to showcase the potential of his abilities. He formed constructs of dazzling complexity—shields that withstood Aquil's powerful blows, and weapons that countered with calculated precision. The training grounds became a canvas for Tao's creativity and determination.

Aquil, growing frustrated, increased the intensity of his attacks. Yet, Tao remained composed, demonstrating not only superior combat skills but also a deep understanding of the ring's power. The crowd's murmurs of amazement filled the air. Aquil now exhausted and confused at Tao's resistance to fall, stopped rushing at Tao, he closed his eyes and with all his will power created the forms an army of lions and bears to attack Tao, and in response to this decisive moment, without a second thought, Tao created a massive construct—a swirling vortex of green and black energy that engulfed Aquil and his constructs. The crowd gasped as the vortex dissipated, revealing Aquil on his knees, battered, his power ring broken, and his willpower crushed.

Silence filled the arena as everyone looked on in shock,

"I didn't know that was possible" said a voice in the crowd,

"He's only been here a few days" said another,

"He destroyed the power ring" said another,

Tao extended a hand to help Aquil up. The defeated Aquil pushed him away.

"You broke my ring! You broke my ring!" he screamed, Aquil tried to put the ring back together, but it turned to dust,

"You will pay for this! You will pay!" screamed Aquil as he was dragged away by Faroo and Jinqa.

Anya quickly approached the arena, her voice resonating. "The duel is over. Tao has shown exceptional skill, discipline, and creativity. This victory is not just his but a testament to the potential within each of you."

Anya addressed the crowd once more. "Let this duel serve as a reminder of your potential. Remember, as Green Lanterns, you are not just warriors but guardians of peace and justice. The true strength of the Corps lies in understanding, cooperation, willpower and the unwavering commitment to protect the universe from darkness."

Anya looked at Tao with a concerned expression as he looked back at her with a lack of expression and the crowds left the training grounds discussing what they had just seen.

At the sheriff's office in the heart of Kentucky. The air hung heavy with the scent of cigar smoke, Christian Dupan, sheriff of the realm, stepped through the creaking door, his imposing figure framed by the entrance.

"What news, Micky?" Dupan's voice was deep, a rumble that hinted at the authority he wielded.

"Master Romano and Elisabetta," Deputy Michael began, choosing his words carefully, "they've left the state after the attack on the plantation."

Dupan's eyes narrowed, and a flicker of anger crossed his face. "She left?"

Michael hesitated, then continued, "We lack the manpower and the funds to go after them. There is no money left after paying off the men for the attack."

A low growl emerged from Dupan's throat, and he swept his arm across the desk, sending papers and inkwells crashing to the floor. The room seemed to vibrate with his fury.

But just as suddenly, Dupan stopped, his eyes gleaming with a new determination. He spoke aloud, "We need money, and we need power, the mayor will help, the amount of his messes I have cleaned up."

With that declaration, Dupan turned on his heel, "I'll be back" he said calmly as the heavy door swinging shut behind him.

Back on Oa, as the buzz of conversation echoed through the training halls of Oa, Anya guided Tao to her quarters. The weight of his victory and the consequences it may bring hung in the air.

"Your performance was extraordinary, Tao. However, breaking an opponent's ring is an unusual and powerful move. Your energy had a black hue to it, I have never seen a Lantern do such a thing, let alone a rookie in training" Anya commented.

Tao looked at Anya with a mix of determination and uncertainty. "I didn't know I could do that. It just... happened."

Anya nodded, her emerald eyes studying him carefully. "Your potential goes beyond what we have ever seen. It's very promising. The Green Lantern Corps values unity and balance, your actions today may have consequences. Some may see you as a threat"

Tao's brow furrowed, "I didn't mean to cause trouble. I just wanted to prove that I am trying my best, that I am learning, I am grateful of the power given to me and... grateful for you."

Anya placed a reassuring hand on Tao's shoulder. "Your intentions are commendable, but remember, the Corps operates on a delicate balance. The duel serves multiple purposes. It tests your combat skills, creativity, and discipline. It's also a way to measure how well you can control the power of the ring under pressure. But most importantly, it's a lesson in humility and understanding."

Anya glanced at him; her expression thoughtful. "I may need to address this matter with the Guardians. "

"Something strange happened..." mused Tao,

"What happened?" asked Anya,

"He created the constructs of what I..."

"Guardian, a council meeting has been called and requires your presence" interrupted green lantern Madan,

"I must go, get some rest... and Tao... I am proud of you" Anya informed Tao.

In the council chamber, the Guardians gathered. As Anya entered, the Guardians Gilet and Carro, the blue-skinned guardians, exchanged a glance, their eyes filled with caution.

"Guardian Anya, inform us what happened today in the duel you scheduled?" asked blue-skinned guardian Saiman,

Anya addressed the council, "My fellow Guardians, today we witnessed the unique abilities of Tao, a newcomer with exceptional potential. The duel, while unconventional, showcased his prowess and understanding of the ring."

Saiman cleared his throat, his voice carrying the weight of authority. "It is evident that Tao's recent actions have raised some concerns among the council," he began, his gaze sweeping across the assembled guardians. "His prowess in battle against the more experienced rookie Aquil has sparked questions about the state of his mind and his readiness to serve as a green lantern."

Asya, interjected with a note of scepticism. "Surely his actions should be viewed within the context of him still learning to control his power and the fact the ring came from the central power battery itself."

Gilet, leaned forward, his expression grave. "While that may be true, Asya, we cannot ignore the need for a thorough evaluation of Tao's mental state, did you not see the energy he released" he countered. "The safety of the corps and the universe we protect must always remain our top priority."

Anya, sensing the direction the conversation was taking, spoke up, her voice tinged with urgency. "But I have been evaluating Tao since the very beginning," she insisted. "I know him better than anyone here, and I can assure you that there is no cause for concern."

Gilet's gaze hardened as he turned to face Anya, his brow furrowing with suspicion. "Your motives, Anya, have come into question," he stated bluntly. "We cannot afford to overlook the possibility of bias in your assessment of Tao's mental state."

Anya's jaw clenched as she bristled at Gilet's accusation, her eyes flashing with indignation. "If you refuse to see my true intentions, then perhaps the problem lies with the council's judgment, not mine."

Asya, a green skinned guardian interjected, "The breaking of the opponent's ring is a rare feat, and it raises questions about the extent of Tao's connection with the power ring and questions arise if it is indeed from the central power battery. Anya, what do you propose we do?"

Anya turned to Asya, "We study him, we help him, we guide him, I believe we could have finally found the lantern from the prophecy"

Saiman swiftly asked "Which prophecy is that? The one that destroys the green lantern corps or the one that saves it?"

Anya looked at him frustrated "The lantern who saves us of course!"

"A mental illness of the past should not be used as guidance in this council" stated Gilet,

Saiman looked at Anya with a little grin "If we have failed to see your intentions, please explain why you have decided to train this lantern yourself?"

"She was undressed with the human in his chamber" revealed Ya'ro,

"This behaviour from guardian Anya is unacceptable" stated Carro,

"I believe she has developed an unhealthy primitive connection with the human" added Gillet,

Anya smiled and took a breath "Never have we ever had a lantern chosen at the brink of death, we all have witnessed that his power ring is not of the ones which had been forged by us, even more unique is that it does not even talk to him and the energy he produces from it. As to its source, we all saw the unusual energy eruption from the power battery before Tao arrived. As a guardian, the wisest decision was for one of us to observe and study this phenomenon, I chose to take that responsibility and my methods are my choice too"

Green Lantern Olo stormed into the council chambers "Guardians, I bring grave news from sector 1417. Reports indicate that the Viper Emperor Binathanu has conquered four of its neighbouring worlds, and we have lost contact with the Green Lantern, Pa'ke who is assigned to that sector."

The room fell into a heavy silence as the gravity of the situation settled upon the council. Olo added, "The reports also suggest that the emperor himself defeated in 1 on 1 combat and killed Pa'ke"

"His ring has not returned to us!" stated Saiman,

Olo shook his head, "I do not know why it has not returned to us"

"Emperor Binathanu may be a force to be reckoned with. If the Lantern assigned to that sector has indeed fallen, we must act swiftly to address this new threat." said Jeethura, the blue skinned guardian

Radia, the green skinned guardian added, "We cannot dismiss the possibility of a new and formidable adversary emerging. The safety of the sector and potentially the balance of the universe are at stake."

Anya proposed a course of action, "I suggest sending two Lanterns to investigate the viper kingdom home world Nageena and assess the situation. We need to understand the extent of Emperor Binathanu's threat."

"Agreed" said all the voices in unison, Green Lantern Olo left the chambers.

"We still have to make a decision on the human, it is clear that the recent events involving Tao have left us with questions about him," he began, his voice carrying the weight of authority. "I propose that we seek the counsel of the mind evaluator, Raine, to assess Tao." Saiman addressed his fellow guardians.

Carro, nodded in agreement. "I believe it is a wise course of action," he concurred.

Gilet, his stern expression betraying no hint of emotion, inclined his head in acknowledgment. "Exactly, the safety of the corps must always be our paramount concern."

Anya, her brow furrowed with uncertainty. "But what if Raine's evaluation reveals nothing?" she interjected, her voice tinged with reluctance. "What then?"

Saiman fixed Anya with a steady gaze, "Then we shall proceed accordingly," he replied, his tone firm but compassionate. "We must observe this anomaly that has appeared before us with all the tools we have, not just your word."

Anya nodded, "Very well," she murmured, her voice tinged with resignation.

"Agreed" all the guardian voiced again in unison.

The Kentucky night air hung thick with anticipation as Dupan stood outside the ornate gates of the mayor's mansion. The lavish iron bars loomed like the pearly gates to heaven. Dupan's imposing figure was cast in shadow, the glow of distant streetlights flickering across his determined face.

The servant, adorned in a uniform befitting the opulence of the mansion, approached Dupan with a hesitant nod. "Yes?" the servant mumbled, an undertone of disdain in his voice.

"I am here to see the mayor" stated Sheriff DuPan,

"And may I enquire as to who you are?" asked the servant,

Dupan looked at him with fury "It's me, Dupan!"

"Just a moment Sheriff Dupan" replied the servant and off he went back into the mansion, fifteen minutes later the servant returned and opened the gates,

"Follow me" the servant ordered Dupan,

Dupan followed the servant through the meticulously manicured garden, each step echoing off the walls of privilege that surrounded him. The mayor's mansion loomed larger as they approached, a symbol of wealth and influence.

Upon entering the mansion, Dupan was led into an opulent waiting room adorned with gilded furniture and paintings that spoke of affluence. The air carried the scent of exotic perfumes and aged whiskey.

As Dupan took a seat on an elaborate chair, the servant disappeared behind a set of grand doors. Time seemed to stretch as Dupan waited in silence. The ticking of a grandfather clock became a persistent reminder of the minutes slipping away.

After what felt like an eternity, the grand doors creaked open, revealing the mayor's lavish office. Dupan rose, his eyes meeting the mayor's as he stood behind an ornate desk.

The mayor, a portly man adorned in expensive attire, raised an eyebrow. "Ah Dupan, my boy. I was just thinking about you just this morning and here you are. What brings you here?"

"I need resources" Dupan said, his voice unwavering. "Romano has slipped away, and I aim to bring them back."

A condescending smile played on the mayor's lips. "Romano!"

"Mayor, all I need is some money and information" pleaded Dupan,

The mayor looked angry "You come to me for help after the mess you created, why did you not come to me before you used your stupid fat brain to remove the man who was bringing carriages of money into my pockets"

"They disrespected me" Dupan replied with a hint of desperation,

"No! Damn obese ingrate, you disrespected me! You made a move without asking me for permission!" barked the mayor,

"I am the Sheriff" retorted Dupan,

The mayor slammed his fist on the table "No! you are a puppet, an instrument, a tool, a stray dog that I allowed to have a home! I took you from the streets, gave you a life! I made you sheriff! Your job is not to think for yourself! Your job is to do what I want done!"

Dupan sat there unable to speak, his eyes were moving millimetres in every direction processing the mayor's words,

The mayor continued "I treated you like a son! and is this how you repay my kindness!? I gave you an education! Just as I gave you this job, I can easily take it away, I should have left you out there to be raped by the dogs! You are no better than a dirty nigger!"

The mayor's servant knocked at the door,

"Yes?" answered the mayor,

The servant came into the office, "My lady has enquired as to how long you will be?"

"Yes, yes, I will go speak to her" replied the mayor,

He looked at Dupan, "You are replicable! never forget that! Leave me! I will have to think what to do with you!"

Dupan got up and left the mayors mansion dejected and heartbroken, he overheard from outside the wife of the mayor say, "I told you not to take in the vermin! That fat ingrate needs to be removed!"

Dupan's world spinning at the interaction he had with the mayor, a man whom he considered a father figure. Dupan walked with his head down and eyes fixed to the floor, he walked for an hour without any sense of direction until he could not walk.

Dupan finally lifted his head up and he was back in front of the mayor's mansion, he felt this intense burning anger rage inside of him, he clenched his fists and kicked open the gates, Dupan rushed towards the house, the main doors opened, and it was the mayors servant, Dupan jumped on him before the servant could say a word, he smashed the servants head into the ground with his meaty hands, he smashed away with uncontrolled rage until the servants skull had caved in.

The mayor hearing the commotion came down the stairs,

"Who's there? Dupan! Is that you?" he questioned as he was only able to see a part of Dupan's face in the darkness,

Dupan on the floor stared at the mayor for a moment without saying a word, all you could hear were the deep breaths of Dupan, finally he got up to his feet and said quietly, "Disrespect has consequences".

Back on Oa, Tao asleep and travelling in the realm of dreams and nightmares. A vast expanse stretched before him, illuminated by the warm glow of a crackling fire at its centre. The rhythmic native beat of a drum echoed in the air, and a shaman's haunting chant intertwined with the dance of flickering shadows.

Tao, adorned in intricate tribal attire, moved gracefully around the fire. His body swayed with the hypnotic rhythm, and in his dance, he felt a connection to something ancient and profound. Beside him, Elisabetta, dressed in similar garb, mirrored his movements with an ethereal grace.

As the shaman's chant reached a crescendo, an owl emerged from the heart of the fire, its feathers ablaze with the same emerald glow that adorned Anya's eyes. The owl soared into the night sky, leaving a trail of luminescence in its wake. Tao and Elisabetta paused in their dance, their eyes following the owl's flight.

The surroundings shifted, and suddenly, a multitude of owls perched on unseen branches appeared, their eyes gleaming with an otherworldly brilliance. The fire's glow painted their feathers in hues of amber and gold as they observed the two dancers with a silent intensity.

From the embers of the fire, Anya emerged, her presence commanding attention. She wore the guise of a human, but her eyes retained the vivid green luminescence, an otherworldly quality that held an unspoken power. The shaman's chant ceased, and a cacophony of hoots and screeches erupted from the owls, echoing through the dreamlike realm, Dupan appeared in front of Tao with Elisabetta by his side, both dressed in the finest outfits, he turned around and fire engulfed him and Anya...

Tao awoke in his chamber, the echoes of the dream still lingering in his mind. The hoots and screeches haunted him, he did not know much about the native way of his ancestors, but he knew owls were a bad omen. The dream left Tao feeling unsettled, the symbolism and the presence of figures from his past and present weighing heavily on his mind. He rose from his bed and made his way to the training grounds, seeking solace in the familiar routine of honing his skills.

As he practiced creating different shapes, creatures, his thoughts drifted back to the events of the previous day—the duel with Aquil, the unexpected display of power, and the repercussions it might bring. He couldn't shake the feeling of unease, the uncertainty of what lay ahead.

Asya, another green-skinned guardian who was observing the training grounds noticed Tao's distraction and approached him with a concerned expression. "Tao, is everything alright?" she inquired, Tao hesitated for a moment before speaking, "I had a strange dream last night, Guardian. It felt... significant, but I can't make sense of it."

Asya regarded him thoughtfully, her gaze penetrating yet gentle. "Dreams often carry messages from the subconscious, Tao. They can reveal hidden truths or fears we may not be aware of."

Tao nodded, absorbing her words. "There were owls in my dream, Guardian. Many owls, watching us... I mean me. And then there was the fire, and people... from my past and present."

"Having looked into your planet and its history, Owls are often associated with wisdom and intuition in many cultures. Perhaps they represent guidance or insight in your journey," Asya suggested.

Tao considered her words, feeling a sense of clarity beginning to emerge from the fog of his thoughts. "And the fire? " He questioned, still trying to piece together the puzzle of his dream.

Asya placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. "Fire can symbolize transformation and purification, Tao. It may signify a turning point or a challenge you must face."

Tao nodded, feeling a sense of gratitude for Asya's guidance. "Thank you, Guardian. I will reflect on this and see what insights I can glean," he said, determination shining in his eyes.

As Guardian Asya left, Tao looked around to see the other rookies had stopped training, they were staring at him with jealousy and disdain.
