Chapter Two-hundred and forty-three: Turffield Troubles
The reborn trainers work up in their lodgings in Turffield, Galar. Today would begin the process of Dawn and the boys working to challenge Milo, the Turffield gym leader, one at a time to earn the badge that his gym gives out. After Dawn and the boys got their parties ready, they along with Kenny's girlfriend Mina had breakfast. "So the plan is that Dawn goes in first and essentially sets Milo's Pokémon on fire," Mina said.
Nodding once, Dawn said, "Essentially, yeah."
"We also need time to work on the Pokémon we've gotten since coming here to Galar," Trip said, "That'll require some focus."
"We just need to believe in the power of the hose," Kenny said, "Believe in your ability to use the hose, and you shall not lose your way."
Trip gave Kenny a dry look. "...You're on a giddy high because you caught a Galarian Meowth that can use Thunderbolt as Sith Lightning."
Clapping her hands together, Dawn said, "Anyway, after we finish up breakfast here, I say we head on down to the Turffield Gym and look into setting up for me to be able to challenge Milo."
"I also got the cheerleader costumes ready for me and my Pokémon to wear when we cheer Kenny on during his gym battles," Mina said, "Although the squad will be me, my Gardevoir, my Lucario, and my Dragonite."
"Yeah, I saw your Pokémon in their cheerleading outfits," Trip said, "Those outfits are all clearly designed for girls to wear, and yet both your Gardevoir and your Dragonite are male."
Shrugging, Mina said, "Pfft, the boys don't care. Although I did notice how Dawn's Lucario showed a little jealousy towards mine when she saw her in the cheerleading outfit."
"Yeah, Leni has a thing for fashion, apparently," Dawn remarked dryly.
...
The reborn trainers, after getting ready, made their way to the Turffield gym. Upon arriving though, they saw that a large crowd was gathered around the entrance to the gym, making it impossible to get in through the front door. Dawn was able to hear bits and pieces from the excited talking from the crowd that they were there to see it as either Dawn herself or one of her companions challenged Milo. "Wow, who would have guessed it that Pokémon battles were so huge of a spectator sport?" Trip remarked as he and the others saw the crowd.
"I swear, if they see us and try rushing us, I will freak," Mina said, "I do NOT do well with being in the middle of a swarming crowd."
The reborn trainers weren't spotted by the crowd yet, so they went around to the back of the Turfield gym, hoping there would be a back door of sorts. To their luck, not only was there a back door to getting into the Turffield gym, but Milo himself was standing outside of that door, talking on the phone. "Yeah, Chairman Rose," Milo said as he talked on the phone, not having noticed the arrival of the reborn trainers yet, "I'm all for battling Sinnoh Champion Dawn Berlitz and her companions in challenges one at a time. But why did you have to advertise the event so heavily?"
The reborn trainers listened and watched on. "Yeah, there's such a huge crowd in front of the Turffield gym that even I can't get in," Milo went on, "I have to wait outside the backdoor to my gym to get in! And what of Dawn and her companions?"
"Considering that one of said companions just admitted she doesn't do well being swarmed by a crowd," Dawn spoke up, making Milo perked up and turn and see Dawn standing there with Kenny, Trip, and Mina.
"...Sorry, Chairman Rose," Milo said, "It's just that Dawn and her companions just showed up, and they apparently had the same idea as me about using the back entrance." After he talked for a little bit more on the phone, Milo was able to end the call. "Sorry that our first meeting with one another ended up like this, Champion Dawn," Milo said, "It's just that Chairman Rose thought that advertising the challenging you and your companions will be doing to the Galar gyms as heavily as he had done would be a good idea. He wanted to make up for how the current World Coronation Series wasn't drawing in as many viewers as he would have liked."
Hands on her hips, Dawn said, "Well hopefully something can be figured out to prevent this from happening with future challenged that me, Trip, and Kenny will make to the other gyms here in Galar."
Milo nodded once in the affirmative. "That's fair. Anyway, you guys will actually have to wait to have battles with me until Chairman Rose gets here, as he wants to go over a few points with you guys first."
"Let me guess," Kenny said, "He aims to maximize the viewership that our battles will get on TV."
"Yeah, it's all about viewership on the telly," Milo remarked. After Milo turned around to knock on the backdoor, the group waited a few moments before the door opened and a Turffield gym trainer opened it. The gym trainer, a male in the Turffield gym trainer uniform, remarked how crazy the crowds outside of the gym's front entrance were before letting Milo and the reborn trainers into the gym.
...
Later, as the reborn trainers waited in an office inside of the Turffield gym, they and Milo all stood up when Rose was shown in, followed by Oleana. "Sorry if me advertising things caused the excitement to get a bit out of hand," Rose apologized, "But you have to admit, viewers all over Galar will be tuning in to watch it as you all have your challenges against the gyms of Galar."
Nodding once, Dawn said, "Maybe something can be managed so we can get into gyms easier from this point moving forward?"
"We're already working on several plans," Oleana said, "Anyway, the challenges to Milo's gym. According to the schedule that I had done up, Milo will first be battling against Kenny Harris for-"
"Uhh, problem with Kenny going first," Mina said as she looked at Oleana while gesturing to herself and the rest of the reborn trainers, "We decided among ourselves that Dawn will go first in trying her hand at battling Milo."
Lowering the clipboard she was holding, Oleana said, "It has been decided for your group that Kenny will go first, then Trip, and then Dawn will be last. This is to ensure that as many viewers as possible stayed tuned in to watch everything, as Dawn is admittedly the one that Galar viewers want to see battle the most, so saving her for last will force viewers to stay tuned in as they wait. I have even advertised that as the order that you will be battling Milo in."
"Wait a minute," Trip said, "You did something like that without even consulting with us first? You didn't even think to first ask us how we feel, or bother to check if we had different plans which we did?"
"I'm trying to get ratings up as much as possible due to how the current World Coronation Series isn't drawing in anywhere close to the predicted number of viewers," Oleana said, "Battles against notable trainers here in Galar IS a big money spectator sport, after all. And that means it's a business, which means that certain things will have to be done in certain ways. Whatever plans that you may have had when it came to challenging the gyms of Galar will have to be adjusted, as the Kenny first Trip second Dawn last pattern will be followed for ALL of your goes against the Galar gyms."
Kenny, folding his arms over his chest, gave Oleana an unamused look. "There are certain things I'd like to say, but I won't as I'm in polite company."
Rose, looking sympathetic, said, "Yeah, I actually wanted to consult with you guys first to see if you had any ideas, but Oleana here insisted that her plans were the best for maximizing viewers tuning in to watch the battles on the telly and went on ahead and had them set in place without giving me a chance to call you guys first to see if you were okay with the plans she had come up with." Folding his arms over his chest, Rose said, "Oleana HAS seen her plans of drawing in more viewers succeed, but as a result of a lot of those plans the gym leaders here in Galar get unamused at times. There were even a few incidents where this habit of Oleana's had even made Leon get cross as a result."
Turning to look at Oleana, Trip said, "So you care more about raking in ratings than the people you set to rake in those ratings. Yup, you totally are a good fit for working in the field of broadcasting events on TV."
Oleana gave an indifferent roll of her eyes as she told Kenny to prep for his battle with Milo before she and Rose turned to walk off to find good seats. Mina after Rose and Oleana were gone said it was a good thing she had the cheerleading outfits for her and her Pokémon on hand, so they just needed to go get changed really quick so they can do their job of cheering for Kenny. The rest of the people there all nodded in understanding, and Milo allowed for sufficient time for things to be ready before he had his battle with Kenny.
As Dawn had predicted, Kenny ended up mopping the floor with Milo. Kenny used his named Alolan Sandslash Silver to defeat Milo's Gossifleur, and then his named shiny Scizor Cell to defeat Milo's Eldegoss in a Dynamax showdown where both Cell and Eldegoss went kaiju-sized. As a result of Kenny's impressive win, he was given a Grass Badge by Milo. As a side note, people during Kenny's battle took note of the cheer squad off to the sidelines, where Mina led her Gardevoir, Lucario, and Dragonite in a cheer routine to support Kenny.
Later that day, after Milo's Pokémon were treated and given sufficient rest time, he had his battle with Trip. Trip, much the same as Kenny, won against Milo and as such had earned a Grass Badge. Wanting to mix things up, Trip used his named Garbordor Tinkerbell (who is male) to defeat Milo's Gossifleur, and after that his named Alolan Marowak Alfred (who is a Totem Pokémon) to defeat Milo's Eldegoss in another Dynamax battle where two Pokémon go titan-sized as they whack one another with fierce blows in the heat of battle.
The following day, Dawn had her battle against Milo and won easily, earning a Grass Badge for herself. Dawn had her named Infernape Chi-Chi defeat Milo's Gossifleur, and then she swapped Chi-Chi out to send in her named Volcarona Zancrow to Dynamax to battle Milo's Dynamaxed Eldegoss. Milo remarked that the battle with Dawn had reminded him of all the times he had been slated to fight Kabu in various tournaments in Galar that were televised, although he admitted that Dawn had a heck of a lot more firepower (in Milo's opinion).
With Dawn and the boys each finding victory in Turffield, they and Mina were able to continue the gym challenge tour in Galar, which they hoped would be streamlined so that they didn't have to struggle to even get into the gym like what had happened in Turffield. The reborn trainers were also still unamused with how Oleana had decided for them what order they could battle gym leaders in, but they had to deal with it because Galar was trying to up viewership ratings because of how things were looking on the telly for the World Coronation Series right now.
...
After clearing things in Turffield, the reborn trainers made their way down Galar Route 5 in order to reach Hulbury, where the Hulbury gym, ran by Nessa, is located. "So now we have to plan challenges to gyms while keeping in mind that it has to go me first, Trip second, and Dawn last," Kenny said, "Instead of allowing us to do things in whatever way suits us best."
Shrugging, Dawn replied, "That's show-business for you, I guess."
As the reborn trainers made their way down the road, they stopped when the door of a nearby building was thrown open, and a pair of Toxels came running out, with one carrying a tiny toy plastic saxophone for some odd reason. As the reborn trainers saw the Toxels run out, a nursery worker came running out after the both of them. "Hey look, the plot's proceeding," Kenny remarked.
Rolling her eyes, Dawn said, "Kenny, do you always have to be so-"
"AHHHHH!"
Dawn stopped short when she and the other reborn trainers all heard the nursery worker cry out in panicked alarm. Looking to see, the heroes saw it when the nursery worker and two Toxels were surrounded by a swarm of Dottlers. To the surprise of trhe reborn trainers, one of the Dottlers was a shiny, although it wasn't the bigger, more rugged looking one that seemed to be leading the horde. The Toxel with the toy saxophone tried to play smooth jazz from the looks of it, but as the saxophone was a small toy, it failed to play any music.
"That nursery worker and the pair of Toxels are surrounded by a swarm of Dottlers," Mina said, "You think we oughta-"
"Go, Myde!" Trip said as he quickly sent out his named Emploeon, "Go kick the butt of the Dottler that's differently colored than the rest, then keep an eye on that differently colored Dottler for me!" The named Emploeon rushed out and rammed the shiny Dottler, pushing it away from the rest of the swarm. The other Dottlers moved to assist their fellow, but the other reborn trainers were on the swarm, bringing them down with various Pokémon of theirs that held type advantages. Within a good few moments, the horde was defeated and sent packing, thus saving the nursery worker and two Toxels.
The only Dottler not sent packing was the shiny, which Trip caught after he had Myde defeat it. "Sweetness," Trip said as he held the Pokéball that contained his newly caught shiny Dottler, "I hear that Dottler's evolution Orbeetle's got a sick looking shiny coloration." After scanning Dottler's ball and learning it's female, Trip said, "This one here shall be named Lahjakkuus."
As Kenny and the girls met up with Trip, the nursery worker approached them. "Thank you for the save," the nursery worker said, "I didn't expect a swarm of Dottlers to confront me when these two little ones ran out of the daycare."
The reborn trainers looked down at the two Toxels, the one with the toy saxophone still trying to play it, and also dance around a bit, as if it were playing smooth, sexy jazz. "No, no, no," Kenny said, "You're doing it all wrong, little one!" Kenny got the Toxel with the toy saxophone to stop; he knelt down to be as level with it as possible, pulled out a pair of sunglasses that looked spot on for being MLG shades, he put the MLG shades on the Toxel with the toy saxophone, then said, "Alright, NOW you're ready to play fanservice music."
The Toxel with the toy saxophone made a happy cry as it stood on its feet again (it sat for Kenny) and proceeded to dance around and pretend to play on its toy saxophone while it wore the MLG shades Kenny put onto it. As the Toxel was being happy, the nursery worker said, "I have to admit, you do excellent work with young Pokémon. What's your secret?"
"Cringe," Kenny replied, "With the occasional dash of moxie."
Gesturing to Kenny and Trip, the nursery worker said, "I'm actually looking for trainers who work well with Pokémon to take these Toxels off of my hands for me. You, boy who caught a Dottler, and you, boy who has a way with Pokémon, would be perfect fits to take the Toxels. What do you say?"
"Yo, I'm down with getting a Toxel," Trip said.
Pointing at the Toxel with the toy saxophone and the MLG shades, Kenny said, "This one here is vibing with me. I think it would be best if he came along and joined the cringe posse." And so, both Kenny and Trip got a Toxel each. Both turned out to be boys, and Trip named his Enchilada while Kenny named his Cooler.
Looking at Trip, Dawn with a dry expression said, "Enchilada. Really."
Shrugging, Trip replied, "What? So I'm hungry. I think of food when I'm hungry."
"And Cooler here has a lot of training to do before he is ready to claim the exalted title of thiccest in the universe," Kenny said, "But he is already one with the powers of cringe and moxie. I am certain he will be able to claim what is essentially his birthright."
Clapping her hands together, the nursery worker said, "Oh! If it's food you need, then you ought to hurry on over to Hulbury! They have a restaurant over there, called The Captain's Table, that is the highest rated rated restaurant in Galar outside of Wyndon! You won't find any finer dining here in Galar until you get to the seat of the Galar Pokémon League!"
Dawn didn't look too entirely sure. "I'm not too certain if we ought to do a restaurant that highly rated. It might be a tad steep for our pocketbook."
"Ain't there any cheaper places to eat out at in Hulbury?" Kenny asked.
Shrugging, the nursery worker said, "I'm... not too entirely sure. The only reason I suggested The Captain's Table is because my boyfriend works there. If you do go to The Captain's Table, you'll be able to identify my boyfriend as he's the only male waiter there."
"Well chances are we won't see The Captain's Table or your boyfriend when we go to Hulbury," Mina replied, "We're on a journey right now, and we don't exactly have the budget for lavish meals at restaurants rated at one star or more."
Looking to the nursery worker, Dawn asked, "How many stars is The Captain's Table rated at?"
"Three," the nursery worker replied, "You won't find a restaurant rated at four or more stars until you get to Wyndon."
"Well Wyndon is still far off on my group's journey here through the Galar region," Dawn said, "If we even do go there. We're just going through the region to challenge the gyms, partly because Trip, Kenny, and I wanna earn the badges here, and partly because Chairman Rose and his assistant who doesn't bother checking anything with anyone first wanna up viewership ratings because the current World Coronation Series isn't drawing in as many viewers as Rose and whatshername want."
The nursery worker suddenly went wide-eyed with surprise. Pointing at the reborn trainers, the nursery worker said, "Oh! You guys are Dawn Berlitz, her brother Trip, and Kenny Harris! That extra girl is someone I don't know, but I saw you three on the telly as you each had battles against Milo! you guys have already taken the Galar region by storm! I don't think there's been so awesome an assortment of trainers since those who followed Leon into the Masters Eight of the current season of the World Coronation Series!"
"Heh heh," Kenny laughed, "Well it's always nice to meet a fan. You'll stay tuned in to see the rest of our battles as they happen, won't you?"
Nodding a few times in the affirmative, the nursery worker said, "Oh, totally! And speaking of your battles, it's a good thing you guys are headed towards Hulbury! That's where Nessa's gym is located! Just to warn you guys, she's a master of water Pokémon, not to mention a model here in Galar!"
"Water Pokémon user," Trip said as he nodded in affirmation, "Got it." The truth was that the reborn trainers all already knew that, but they still had to maintain certain things. For the time being, at least.
The nursery worker nodded in understanding as she pointed the way to Hulbury; basically just a straight line ahead down the road that the nursery is located along. Dawn and the others thanked the nursery worker for her time, and the boys thanked the nursery worker again for the Toxels, before they all took off down the road to Hulbury. Given how late they expected to arrive in Hulbury, the reborn trainers anticipated that they'd have to find lodging for the night before they could go about going to the Hulbury gym where Kenny (due to Oleana being a bitch and not even obthering to check with the reborn trainers first concerning what they wanted to do) would be the first to issue a challenge to Nessa.
The reborn trainers could certainly use the rest.
Rest, sadly, that didn't come to the reborn trainers right away.
Upon entering Hulbury, the reborn trainers were very nearly swarmed by a crowd of league fans; Mina called out her Dragonite, hopped onto its back, and flew straight up so as to avoid being stuck in the middle of a crowd. This distracted the fans long enough for Nessa to come over to see what the commotion was. Upon seeing and recognizing Dawn and the others, Nessa relaxed. "Ah, it's you guys," Nessa said, "Chairman Rose did tell me that you would be coming by. He's also here in Hulbury with that assistant of his, as they'd anticipated that your party would be here."
"Let me guess," Trip said, "They wanna meet with us."
Nessa nodded once in the affirmative. "The lot of us have a dinner meeting with Rose and his assistant over at The Captain's Table. It's the finest restaurant in Galar outside of Wyndon."
"Can we at least rest a bit first?" Dawn asked, "The others and I have been on the road from Turffield to here, so we'd at least like time to freshen up."
"Completely understandable," Nessa replied, "I have showers in the locker room in my gym. We can go there."
Looking up into the air where Mina was at, Kenny called up, "Hey babe! We're headed straight to the Hulbury gym to freshen up there before we go meet Rose and his assistant lady at the fancy restaurant!"
"Make the crowd disperse first!" Mina called back down, "I ain't coming down while there's still a crowd down there that can swarm me!"
"I already made them disperse," Nessa called back up, "What, didn't you see it happen?"
"No!" Mina called back down, "I'm not good with crowds!" After Kenny called up to let her know it was safe, Mina and her Dragonite gently flew back down. Seeing that the crowd had dispersed, Mina relaxed, recalled her Dragonite, and proceeded to go with the other reborn trainers and Nessa over to the Hulbury gym. They used the showers in the locker room there to freshen up, then after getting clean clothes on, they went with Nessa to go on over to The Captain's Table, where they expected to have a dinner meeting with Rose and Bit-err, I mean Oleana.
Over at The Captain's Table, the reborn trainers and Nessa sat down to a meal with Rose and Oleana, a meal that Rose was covering the cost of. "The broadcasting of your battles against Milo have really upped ratings on tellies all over Galar," Rose said, "That being said, I hope that you all plan to give it your all when you have your battles against Nessa here. As one of Galar's gym leaders, she is by no means a pushover."
"Oh, no need to worry about us underestimating things here," Dawn replied, "What we're more concerned about is being able to get into the gym when we swing by to challenge Nessa. I mean, we had to use a backdoor into the Turrfield gym in order to get into there, same as what Milo had to do."
Mina nodded in agreement. "The crowds were unbelievable."
"We're planning on putting up lines along the path straight to the gym's front doors, and fans will be required to stay outside of the lines," Oleana said, "Think of it as a sort of red carpet event where the way is cleared for celebrities to head straight to the award ceremony."
Arching a wry eyebrow, Kenny said, "Oh, so we're celebrities now, are we?"
"Heh," Nessa chuckled, "You might as well be. Here in Galar, Pokémon battling is the biggest sporting event across the region. Some notable trainers are even endorsed by various companies here in Galar. Have you even seen the back of that cape that Leon wears? There's patches of logos from all of the companies that sponsor him."
Dawn nodded in understanding. "Yes. I saw something similar crop up in the Alola region with our friend Serena after she won Alola's first Contest Grand Festival, and she got into doing some sort of advertising thing with this one eatery place on Melemele Island."
"Ooh, I heard about what all went on in Alola," Rose said in a sympathetic tone, "With that horrid Team Scorn group. Is everyone alright over there?"
Letting out a troubled sigh, Dawn said, "I... I wish I could say that there's no need to worry about that. But that would be FAR from the truth. There were multiple people hurt in Team Scorn's last known act in Alola as far as I am aware. The older brother of one of our friends was even killed." Looking to Rose, Dawn said, "I hope that no such business has happened here in Galar."
"Galar does, unfortunately, have a sector of those bastard Team Scorn bastards running about," Nessa spoke up, "They're called the Headphones Sector. But they have not done anything TOO bad, at least they haven't killed anyone."
Trip arched a wry eyebrow. "The Headphones Sector?"
Rose nodded once in the affirmative. "Yes. We know next to nothing about their command structure, aside from how the leader of the Headphones Sector is known as Admin Scorbunny."
"A... a Pokémon is the Admin in charge of a sector of Team Scorn?" Kenny asked, sounding mildly surprised.
"Kenny, I'm sure that the Admin is using the name of a Pokémon as a code name," Dawn replied, "There's no way that the Admin in charge of the Headphones Sector is an actual Scorbunny." At least Dawn hopes that Admin Scorbunny isn't an actual Scorbunny.
"I also heard rumor," Oleana spoke up, getting everyone to turn to look at her, "That the entirety of the Headphones Sector's command structure is female. Admin, the Captains, and all of their respective Assistants. All girls."
"Really?" Mina said, "The Admin in charge of the Headphones Sector is supposedly a girl? Huh, I thought that all Team Scorn Admins were male. I mean there's Admins Brother, Ninja, Swordsman, Hero, and Mage, and all of them are dudes."
Kenny nodded in agreement. "There is the occasional female Captain, and girls are somewhat common as Officer's Assistants. But this is the first we're hearing of a Team Scorn Admin being a girl." Kenny had a grim, serious look on his face. "But the fairer sex can make for a most dangerous adversary indeed. We cannot afford to not give this the full seriousness that's required of us, just because the Admin of the Headphones Sector is supposedly a female Scorbunny."
"Kenny, I told you that there's no way that Admin Scorbunny is an actual Scorbunny," Dawn said dryly.
Pointing to Dawn, Kenny said, "Well Cinder and Rumi are both female Scorbunnys, and I can tell they're both brimming with dangerously high levels of power, awesome, and cringe. Just imagine what they will be like when they evolve!"
"Scorbunny is also a fire type," Nessa said, "And I heard that Dawn used various fire types against Milo. That said, such tactics aren't gonna cut it against me over at my gym, I hope you know."
"Don't worry, we have plans," Dawn said, "We did hear it that you use water type Pokémon, and even if we didn't we probably could have guessed it easily as you look like you work with water types." The rest of the meal was spent doing some general socializing, giving the reborn trainers time to unwind. Dawn and the boys had also thought about how to go about their respective challenges against Nessa, although none of them said anything out loud about it. Granted, Nessa did come off as a tad on the smug and self-amused side for Dawn's tastes when she mentioned how using fire against her wouldn't be a good idea, but that was something that Dawn could look into handling at a later time.
For now, Dawn, Kenny, and Trip had to focus on their goes against the gyms of Galar, and starting tomorrow they'll start the process of throwing down against Nessa. The reborn trainers also had to keep an eye out for word about the Headphones Sector, the native sector of Team Scorn in the Galar region, and the head of said Sector who is going by Admin Scorbunny. Kenny is still convinced that Admin Scorbunny is an actual Scorbunny, but Dawn is certain it's a human using Scorbunny as a sort of code name. There's no way it could be an actual Scorbunny.
...At least Dawn hopes it's not an actual Scorbunny.
END, CHAPTER TWO-HUNDRED AND FORTY-THREE
Author's notes;
This chapter sees the reborn trainers head on over to the turffield gym, where Dawn and the boys earn their respective Grass Badges. After that they head down Galar Route Five where Trip and Kenny get some new Pokémon, including Trip catching a shiny Dottler. After that they arrive in Hulbury where, after Nessa shoos a crowd away for the reborn trainers and brings them to her gym so they can freshen up, they head to The Captain's Table where they have a dinner meeting with Rose and Oleana. There, in addition to discussing the gym challenge tour that Dawn and the boys are doing, the topic of Galar's native sector of Team Scorn is also brought up.
Kenny is convinced, after hearing that the Admin in charge of the Headphones Sector is called Admin Scorbunny, that said Admin is an actual Scorbunny, but Dawn can tell that the Admin is simply using Scorbunny as a code name of sorts. The Headphones Sector of Team Scorn will be covered further in this portion of the story, even more so when the World Coronation Series that Ash competes in rolls around. But that can be discussed later. For now, the next chapter will see Dawn and the boys get their goes against Nessa's gym. Be careful, as the first few rows will be a splash zone. The Galar gym challenge tour will continue, but until then take care.
