Mrs. Hudson had a talent for knitting, though it was not something she advertised. She had learned early on that if she let friends know about her gift, they would inevitably ask for commissions (or if they did not ask, they implied it) and while she did not mind it sometimes, she preferred to engage in her hobby entirely devoid of the pressure of perfectionism that would plague her if she knew she was making an item for someone else. Sometimes she would keep her pieces for herself, sometimes donate them to the less fortunate, and sometimes give them as gifts.
When Mr. Holmes first brought his little gang of street children around, she had been scandalized, but as time went on, she came to care for the young lads and worry for their warmth and safety. So it came about that every Christmas, 'Santa' would leave knitted gifts for each of the Irregulars, and they would always say that the scarves they received were the warmest they ever had.
