Devon had insisted that both Bonnie and Michael go to the hospital. Bonnie was already out and working on a new (and more robust) commlink for Michael. However, the Home Office's ramp, under Kitt's weight, had landed on Michael's leg. Luckily, he had no broken bones and no permanent nerve damage. Michael expected to be released soon. Even if he had to go AMA.

As he lay in the bed, he heard a knock in the door and then Erika stuck her head in.

"Hello, Michael. Are you up for visitors?"

"Of course. Come on in."

"I was here visiting Anita and the new baby. They've named him Charles Todd, after his grandfathers."

"How're they doing?"

"She and Charlie are both doing fine. When I left, they were about to take a nap. Anita told me everything: You're here to investigate Summit. And you're the reason Tommy Groves is in jail. She also said you were here in the hospital, too. Because you fell into a sinkhole."

"Yup. And now I'm out. Like Anita and little Charlie, I'm just fine. Come to think of it, though, I could use a nap, too." He laughed.

Erika laughed along with Michael. "And when will you get out of this place?"

"Soon, I hope. Why?"

"Ross Osborne won the car show, just like I said he would. Would have come in second, if you'd entered. Anyway, tonight's the award dinner. I was wondering if you were free."

"The car show is a charity fundraiser, right?" Erika nodded. "Then my boss can't possibly complain if I go. What time?"

"Doors open at 5:30. Dinner's at 6:00."

"I'll pick you up at 5:00." Michael checked the clock on the wall. "Which gives me three hours to get outta here, then get to the motel for a shower and a change of clothes."

"I'll see you at 5:00, then, Michael."

She left as Devon came in.

"Ah, Michael. I have secured your release."

"Great timing. I've just accepted a dinner invite."

"Oh?" Devon barely glanced in the direction Erika had just left.

"To a charity dinner."

"I see." Devon made a show of checking his watch. "You doubtless will not have time to write up your report. However, perhaps a first draft? Or even an outline?"

"I'll need to pack up all the paperwork Osborne gave me and meet with the police to go over it all. And get ready for the charity dinner."

"I didn't think so," murmured Devon.
