It been a week since the planet left New Earth... and Mal was already suffering from extreme boredom. His crew had sailed back into the black... but they were just kinda orbiting the world. He might as well have stayed planet side, but he was getting land fever.
There were now a few other Fireflies, flying around the mobile moon. But they were actually doing something. Even if it was just grabbing asteroids, and dragging them into the ship to be mined.
Mal had asked if the Goblins needed any help... and they firmly said no. Believing Mal would only get in the way. He might be a Goblin Ally, but he wasn't a Goblin. He wasn't nearly good enough at mining, and didn't have any experience in magical forging.
So here he was lazily sailing around the moon... While there was something nice about casually sailing, there was nothing to do. At least, not until the Moon reached the next habitable star cluster. The wizards magic telescopes had spotted some ships flying around. And the Goblins believed they could potentially find aliens to trade with.
But until then, Mal had nothing to do.
Sighing, the young Captain got out of bed. He might not have any plans for the day, but he couldn't afford to laze about.
Looking around his posh room, Mal still wasn't used to the small manor, his bunk had been transformed into. With ALL the bunks being similarly transformed. The Goblins went overboard with the extension charms... exclaiming he needed something "worthy of his station".
He now had about a dozen condos, each with 4 bedrooms and their own living room. 2 ballrooms, his own private bar, a media room, a library, just anything that one would think a manor would have... HE EVEN HAD A BLOODY FLOWER GARDEN!!! Not to mention all the lounges.
Simon and River had moved into Kaylee's own manor. Each having their own condo... although Simon often slept in Kaylee's own... in her bedroom... with Kaylee.
While Book moved into Mal's Manor. With his own Condo, to himself.
They kinda had to, given the Guest Quarters were converted into various necessities a magical vessel would need... like a small Water Park... and other things on a luxury cruise liner.
The posh, medieval, furniture still didn't feel like his. And he was sure, the rest of the crew, weren't used to the fancy chairs, throughout all the ship.
Probably because it used to belong to the Potter family. Wizards appeared to be hoarders, and just moved everything they weren't using into the vault. Rarely selling, or getting rid of, anything.
With the Whole Potter family dead, save Harry, there was a lot of furniture. Apparently, most of them had been killed in the last two "Wizarding" wars... then Mal killed his last living relatives... poor kid.
Harry had no family, and was stuck with the person that killed the last of them. Mal already knew nothing of children, much less emotionally scarred ones.
Sighing again, Mal stepped out of his room, to find Harry.
Harry had woken up some hours ago, and was busy helping the House Elves.
Mal had inherited a family of them, that had been formally taking care of the Potter Estate...
The Potters owned quite a lot of magical properties. Which the Captain sold to the Goblins. Whom then teleported them into Wizarding Britain, and sold them to wealthy couples.
However, the House Elves had long since moved everything, from these buildings, into the Potter Vault... then kept the houses clean, while feeding off the building's magic.
Waiting for the day Harry's magical core stabilized, so he could claim them... then were disappointed when Harry became old enough for Hogwarts... but still didn't come for them... they had felt abandoned, after years of hope.
They put themselves in a magical sleep, until a Potter might have use of them... They had stopped aging, at least.
The Captain still wasn't comfortable with the notion of elves. Especially with how far they had taken things when they thought they would never get to serve Harry.
Mal especially didn't like watching them walk around in literal rags. So he negotiated an obscure deal with them.
They could wear whatever clothes they liked, but would wear collars to "show off they were under a family's protection". It was a common practice among the Japanese and American wizards, as well as the Warlocks.
Harry was currently in the farm, helping the elves pick breakfast. It turned out, wizards didn't eat animals. Rather they had trees where they grew different cuts of meat... meat trees. There were also all kinds of regular foods, growing in here too. Plus trees growing different kinds of candies, pastries, and other types of sweets.
Well... Harry said he was helping, in actuality, he was holding a basket. Standing beside him, was another boy, holding his own basket.
Harry didn't really mind this boy was an elf. As it was just nice living with a boy his age, who actually liked him.
Jypsy was just a few months younger then Harry. As apparently, when Lily learned she was pregnant, she ordered a baby elf, to practice being a parent.
Jypsy was meant to be a playmate, for Harry to growup with... an older brother, and protector, but because of the magical sleep, Harry was actually older then him.
They hadn't seen each other, since Harry was a year old... so neither really remembered the other. regardless, the little elf boy, was all kinds of eager to be Harry's friend. Not because Harry was famous, but because Harry was family.
Although, the elf did like to complain to Harry, about how he "wasn't trusted" to do more then simple task. He was a child, and although elves didn't have child labor laws, they didn't let their children do anything but the most basic of chores.
Well, Harry had learned, this was so the child could feel like they are contributing, Jypsy was at the age were he wanted more responsibility, despite "not being ready for it". Which the boy was all kinds of grumpy over. As he believed himself big enough to start handling real work... despite only coming up to Harry's knees.
Regardless, it was nice, having another boy his age around.
Twinkle, Jypsy's mom, was busy picking the food, with her magic. Well Whiskers, was off helping Kaylee keep the ship running.
Jypsy did, occasionally, help Simon in the infirmary. As the boy was interested in healing magicks. Mal got the elf boy access to the Goblin Tomes, for both Alliance and Magical medicines... As well as herbology care, and potions brewing.
But no one has been injured, since the elves came onboard, so Jypsy mostly kept the infirmary tidy... or tried to, as Simon liked to do that, himself.
Twinkle was assigned to keep everything clean, and Whiskers was assigned to help Kaylee with maintenance... again, both were given magical Tomes on the Topics. Learning everything instantly.
Now having Elves of his own, Harry was curious about their culture.
For example, he had learned Elves had a different kind of economy, trading favors instead of currency. Which is why they sold themselves, in exchange for feeding off a wizard's magic. They don't need to eat, instead just absorbing excess magic.
These elves had been struggling, feeding off the magicks of the Potter Estates. Since Harry was never given the chance to claim them... now, Mal could have, but let Harry do it. Since they were his parents elves... they were a connection to family, and told the boy many stories.
Harry also learned House Elves couldn't have children. They were all barren. Needing to be brewed, like a potion, and bound to a family line, at birth. Normally, elves were born as adults, with all knowledge they needed to know uploaded from books, like the ones the Goblins made of the Signal Wave.
Although, sometimes, the better masters would order babies or children. So that their elves could have more proper families.
Harry had learned a lot about elves. But still, Harry hoped to learn a whole lot more about his new friend.
"Do you go to school?" Harry asked Jypsy, as they just stood there, as things floated into their baskets.
Jypsy frowned, "Jypsy is house elf." He said that as if it was an answer.
Harry just raised an eyebrow at him.
Jypsy sighed, "Jypsy is home schooled. Mama teaches Jypsy how to clean, and how to read, and how to math, and how use Elf magic, That all Jypsy need know."
Now it was Harry's turn to frown. He might not like school as much as Hermione, but he couldn't imagine not going.
"Do you see any other elf kids?" Harry asked.
Jypsy blinked, "Jypsy see many elf kids. He has many friends."
Harry sighed in relief. That was the best part of school. "So Elves visit each other? You don't just hang around the ship all day?"
"Of course," Jypsy nodded his head, his large ears flopping about. "Young Master Harry Potter Sir is most curious about Elves. Jypsy is happy to have him as a master."
Harry blushed, finding that an odd form of praise.
"I do have one question you might not like." Harry pulled up his Gryffindor courage.
"Oh?" Jypsy asked.
"Twinkle and Whiskers are your parents, right?"
Jypsy nodded happily.
"So does that mean their married?"
Jypsy suddenly blushed, "N-no. They is Jypsy's family, because Jypsy was entrusted to them. They... aren't together..."
Twinkle called over, though didn't pause in her work. "Family, for House Elves, is defined by the family we serve. So Whiskers is more like my brother. But Since Jypsy is a child, all Potter Elves-es are his parents... but it's just Twinkle and Whiskers as the grown up Elves."
"huh," Harry looked thoughtful.
Twinkle got the last ingredient, and waved at the children to follow her out.
Once they were back out in the hall, Harry took a moment to look at the Cabins. They looked much the same, except now there were ten rooms. And each of them led to a different wing.
Like the farms (one for food and the other for potion ingredients), a potions lab, a game wing, a swimming pool, things for both necessity and fun. As well as a small door at the end of the hall... that reminded Harry of his old Cupboard... didn't help that's where the elves lived.
However, inside was like a hobbit den, straight out of "Lord of the Rings". Complete with elf sized rooms... Harry was often allowed to walk around in there. And ended up hitting his head on a Chandelier.
Smiling at the memory, Harry turned away, to follow Twinkle up the stairs... only to run into Mal.
Mal forced a smile, while Twinkle tugged her ears. Clearly thinking Mal would be mad at her.
"Young Master Harry Potter Sir, insisted on helping with morning chores." Twinkle panicked... like she did every morning.
"I keep telling ya, if Harry wants to earn his keep, all the more power to him," Mal insisted. Judging by the way Harry wilted, it had been the wrong thing to say. Mal awkwardly patted the boy's shoulder. "I'm proud you want to help out so much," boy's needed encouragement, right? "But y'all know ya don't have ta."
The boy gave a small smile at the reassurance. Good, Mal was getting better at this.
"I don't mind sir," Harry assured. "Besides, this messy ship could use a good Cabin Boy." the boy stood tall.
Mal smiled, "Cabin Boy, huh?" weird game, involving cleaning, but if that's how the kid wanted to spend his time.
"We've seen on the morning Wireless," Mal bought his own "Wireless Box", which recieved it's own radio-like waves, but sent through magic. And Mal had to admit, he rather enjoyed it.
It worked like those primitive "Streaming Apps" from Earth that was. Allowing people to search through "Stations" and choosing what they wanted to listen to... with a psychic interface, controlled by dials on the radio. You could choose between Audio Stories, Talk Shows, and of course, music. Playing a whole Album, for free. Or, buying individual songs, to put into play list.
"The new school," said Mal, "Finally has an official opening date."
Harry frowned, "Sure I can't go back to Hogwarts?" he begged.
Mal sighed, "River says it ain't safe for ya there. So Ah ain't sending you there. Besides, that new Muggle born school is much better. They're actually teaching the Sciences. Can't figure how any school can just throw their hands up after primary, and spend the rest of their days only teaching magician's tricks."
Harry sighed. At least Hermione would be going to this school... as The English Ministry had refused to accept any more muggle borns, now that Muggle borns had a city of their own.
They still had their doors open to "half bloods", that had at least one magical parent. However, many such wizards had left for the Muggle born city. That was already specializing in combining science with magic.
The Muggle born school was even accepting other magical beings, and had courses to teach them magic, including Warlock classes.
"Besides," Mal gave another sigh. "This ain't a boarding school. So y'all will come home at the end of the day."
Even as Mal said that... this place still didn't feel like home. It been over two months, and Harry still felt weird here. Hogwarts was home... and Harry would never be going back there.
"We need to go down to the school, and enroll you two,"
Jypsy tensed. While Twinkle beamed. "Good Master Malcolm Reynolds Sir, is sending Jypsy to school!?" She clarified.
Mal shrugged, "Well yeah, I figure your my responsibility, so I oughta pay for his schooling to."
Twinkle began dancing around, singing Mal's praises... while the boys just looked at each other. Looks like some elves did go to school.
