The British Muggle Born City, of "New London", was... gorram weird.
They had built a bunch of shrines... vaguely the size and shape of Telephone Booths. Contracting the Goblins to put extension charms, roughly the size of a small village, inside each. Calling these shrines "Estates".
The Ceilings were charmed, like the decks' false skies, and 50 stories high, on the inside. While the outer shrine was three meters tall. The inner walls were covered in condos, to have room to grow the family clan. With a gorgeous field in between, and a lake in the center.
Each family line, had their own Estate, with the houses the family members owned, moved inside. Before being enchanted to have infinite clean water. As well as free electricity, using techno magic, so no need of power lines. Then garbage cans, to toilets, enchanted to vanish all waste.
While most of these estates were for muggleborn families, there was a large number of Half-Blood bachelors, and smaller blood traitor families, whom were moved into a shared shrine. As they didn't need the space.
The larger families of "Blood Traitors" whom moved into the city, were given their own private Estate. With a law that a family needed 5 Generations, or at least 7 blood related family members, to be rewarded an estate. Whichever came first.
Griphook expressed shock, to Mal, that the other cities hadn't thought of this. As they had limited space. However this was more done out of necessity.
The Pure-Bloods had refused to share their resources. So the necessary Crystals, to fuel the teleportation runes, weren't provided. That meant, Each family had to fold space, in order to put all their homes in their shrine, and THEN bring the shrine to the moon.
Griphook, and a few other Goblins, had arranged for their non-goblin employees, to build the Estates. But refrain from creating any "Goblin Made Artifacts".
Goblins had a different definition of ownership, then humans. Believing it was the creator that actually owned whatever they crafted. That people just purchased a lifelong lease.
The Goblins didn't want to risk having to reclaim any of the estates. As that would cause tension later on. So they used other beings, they employed, to make the spell work.
Regardless, the wizards refused to loan the crystals, to teleport muggles to the moon. So this work around was necessary.
Humans were always brilliant at finding loopholes and work arounds. It's what made them such frustrating customers... and remarkable inventors.
New London was more a decent sized small town. With roughly 10,000 people living there. All Squibs, muggleborns, and their muggle families, with a few half bloods that were marveled by the muggle world. Even a handful of Pure Bloods, that had married these individuals, or just supported them... like the Weasleys.
Harry was glad, both his friends would be going to his new school. With Ron's family getting their own Estates, while being treated with respect here.
Even Hermione's family got their own Estate, thanks to coming from a large extended family... regardless if they were mostly muggles. Apparently, Hermione even had a few magical cousins, she didn't know about, thanks to the former "Statute of Secrecy". Which was no longer in affect.
The government was made up of one member of each estate. Not necessarily magical. Who doubled as head of their family, and Councilman. Their minister being selected by some ancient artifact, called the Goblet of Fire. Anyone could apply, but only the most well suited was chosen by the Goblet.
The random Half Bloods, and Pure Bloods, that moved in, were placed in the same suburb. Along with a frightening amount of Coin, and their own seat on the Council. As a way of encouraging them to move in. After all, they needed more magic in their city to be recognized by the other villages.
Then there was the few actual buildings, but not many. A branch of the wizarding bank, a post office, City Hall, the Court House, the hospital, the mall (which was the biggest), and of course the School. The School taught preschool through university, and was completely free for all citizens... key word being "citizens".
"Y'all want us to settle here?" Mal eyed as he was given a tour of the village, by the Minister herself.
Harry by his side, strangely not saying a word... and acting as meek as possible. Mal was worried it might be a habit from his relatives, but didn't know how to go about correcting it.
"Is it really so surprising?" Andromeda Tonks smiled.
Although she was a pure blood, she had married a muggleborn, and been cast out of her family. However, she remained fairly wealthy and influential, at least amongst "Blood Traitors". With her husband being a healer, descended from muggle nobility.
The man hadn't wanted to be in charge. Rather he desired to continue his work, at this new hospital. But his wife hadn't hesitated to put her name in the Goblet. And the village was glad she did. As she seemed to be handling leadership rather effortlessly.
"You're crew is what made all this possible," Pointed out Minister Tonks. "And I imagine we have even more to learn from you. The Goblins are charging a fortune for the knowledge you gave them, and even their books can't give you experience.
"Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised, if all the city states, were plotting on ways to get you to settle in their town. They're foaming at the mouth, to get your coven to join.
"All we want is for you to occasionally park your ship, at our port. We'll even be able to charm the space, so that your ship can instantly teleport back to it, regardless how far from the moon you get. So you'll be able to explore more."
Mal did his best not to show his shock. Having a permanent port did sound useful... regardless. "I imagine any port could do the same."
Minister Tonks smile dimmed a little, "True but we'd be willing to put an Estate on your space, for your Coven to use at your leisure." That certainly sweetened the deal, and wasn't something most cities had access to... although, the other Muggle-born certainly did. However, after doing some research, Mal was already planning to send his ship's kids, to this city's school.
The minister sensed she peeked his interest, so decided to push. "we'll give you full rights as an estate. That means a seat on the Council. Not to mention we'll wave the fees for exchange students."
Mal glared, "Is that why you insisted on givin' each member of my crew their own tour. Trying to steal them away from me?"
Andromeda laughed, "You really don't grasp what you agreed to, with the Goblins. Your crew is already recognized as a coven of Warlocks. With you as the head. Even if they do take jobs here, they will still have a connection to you. We would even insist, if they do choose to settle here, that they share an estate. Which I would be willing to register your ship as."
Mal wish he hadn't sighed in relief, just then. By giving each of his crew a trust fund, he essentially shackled them to his ship. Not giving them an out, like he feared... which ment even Inara still had a connection to him... he would have to discuss that, with his crew.
Simon wasn't pleased to know he was officially a member of Mal's family. With the magical world putting a lot of focus on family, to the point the head always had legal standing over the rest.
However, unlike the others... perhaps even unlike Mal himself, Simon had done his research before Mal, officially, set up the Trust Funds for him and his sister.
River made it quite clear she liked the idea of having a proper family again... and Simon had gotten used to doing what would keep his sister safest.
As members of "House Reynolds", both Simon and his sister gained the same protections from the Goblins as Mal had. The same access to knowledge, and being rich again didn't hurt... plus... Simon might not always see eye to eye with the Captain, but he knew Mal at least tried to do the right thing by his crew.
"Many of our healers have been exposed to the medical journals the Goblins got from your ship," Informed Doctor, errr 'Healer', Tonks. As Simon was given a tour of the hospital. Its conditions looked fairly primitive, like early 21st century of Earth-That-Was. However their equipment was just as advanced as the Alliance. "But we could use someone that actually has experience with those techniques. I would like to make you head of the Surgical Department."
Simon just smiled, as he listened. He could have his life back. No one here knew he was a fugitive, for saving his sister from the Alliance experiments on her. The Alliance had no influence here... he was free...
River blinked, actually being able to understand the people around her. They were all Readers, like herself, although not as powerful. They worked at a temple, using their gifts to help others.
Shepard Book was here, talking with the various priests and monks. As such entities were trusted with watching over prophecies, and preventing disasters through them.
River could hear them, despite them being at the other side of the building. As she could hear all things. Though she had to focus on something to make any sense of it.
Book was awed they had such similar views on God. Granted they didn't believe Buddha was a prophet. But the first two testaments were very similar. With the holy men eager to learn of the third, with Buddha. As apparently, their world also had a holy man named just that. But he wasn't recognized as part of Christianity.
The Monks were intrigued by the 3rd Testament, which combined all religions of Earth-That-Was. As apparently Wizards had been trying to do that for some time.
They wanted Book to help them get the other churches to recognize this uniformed gospel. And maybe incorporate some of their passages, in regards to magic.
Zoey, and Jayne, were taking a tour of the wizarding police station.
"We have enough Aurors," Explained Deputy Tonk, daughter of Chief Healer Ted Tanks, and Minister Andromeda Tonks. She was chosen for the tour, because unlike her parents, she was the lowest at the totem pole. None of the senior Aurors wanted to give a tour to nobles. No matter how important they were. "Not a lot of crime yet. But what we need is hunters."
"You mean like bounty hunters?" Jayne asked.
Tonks rolled her eyes, her pink hair shifting to an annoyed orange. "What part of 'not a lot of crime' made you think we need bounty hunters."
Jayne scowled, but the girl ignored him. "We need hunter-hunters. As in people to kill magical beast, and deliver their bodies. I hear you lot have been looking for work. Well hunting beast should be easy, and fun, work for space Warlocks."
"I thought wizards protected magical creatures." Zoey asked.
Tonks rolled her eyes. Then explained, as if to a dimwitted child. "Well part of that protection involves keeping their populations down. That's more important then ever, now that we have the more limited Space of a moon, instead of a planet. A lot of these beast are dangerous, and if they breed in too high numbers, they could destroy the prey population. And maybe even threaten the various magical beings.
"Just make sure you don't kill more then the tags you're given, and we shouldn't have a problem. The apothecary will pay you for each tagged creature you deliver to them. That way they can be harvested for ingredients."
Kaylee and Wash, AKA "Zoey's Husband", walked through the labs. Where skilled muggles and wizards were working on combining magic and science.
Everyone here, including those of Mal's present crew, had uploaded all information regarding the subjects, from the Goblin book.
However, Kaylee and Wash had experience working with advanced muggle tech, and now a techno magic space ship. It was really a no brainer why the scientists, and enchanters, wanted them.
Once the crew met back up, and Harry was put to bed, Mal told them what the Minister told him.
"So... we just park the ship here?" Wash frown. "You know I tend to get land crazy."
Mal sighed, "The Minister offered us work, as a transport. For when they start trading with the new Star Cluster. Until then, they want us to capture as many asteroids as we can. That way they can use the metals to build new techno magic... We can do that over the weekend, to not interfere with whatever work you find for yourselves...
"I want to keep us together,"
Jayne scoffed, glad they were finally having this conversation... even if he feared it. "There isn't much reason for us to stay together. We don't NEED work." still, he had always been rather tactless. And couldn't just admit he didn't want to leave cuz he liked these people... the idea was foreign to him.
"Would you rather spend your days lazing about?" Simon asked.
Jayne glared. The Doctor being one man he wouldn't mind ditching. "Why're ya even interested in this? Ya ain't the Verse's most wanted out here. Ya don't NEED to hide behind Mal, no more."
Simon went quiet, his eyes hesitantly went to Kaylee, then realized everyone was looking at him. "I... don't know. Honestly I don't...
"It might be, because I feel closer to you people then I do my biological family..." the young Doctor reluctantly admitted, mostly to himself. Then hesitantly looked back at Mal. The older man annoyed the piss out of him... but he always protected him... treated him like family. He had so many chances to turn his back. But he never did.
"Honestly, I've been thinking about this a lot," Simon sighed. "The Goblins already recognize us as a family... and well... we acted like it long before we met them. Maybe it's time we acknowledge the reason we're all still here... is because we don't want to leave."
Book smiled, "Well said son, and I'm sure, Inara will eventually realize that, as well."
Mal tensed, not wanting to think about Inara... though still hoping Book was right about her coming back.
