Tomorrow though has as a way of throwing up the last thing you expected to deal with. And as Shego awoke with hair all sleep tousled and eyes blurry, the most she expected to content with was some sign of whatever crazy scheme Kim's brothers were working on. Ears half cocked for the sound of crashes, thuds or clangs, Shego flicked on the tv mostly for background noise before she did the same with the kettle. Having moved to grab the jar of instant coffee she might soon have to switch to decaf, Shego froze with sudden awareness as she heard two words she wasn't prepared to hear.
'And the world's security services are still reeling from last nights shocking revelation of the existence of a secret intelligence organisation named Global Justice that has, if this information is true, has operated around the world with no regard for borders, jurisdiction or due process.'
Shego bit back a sharp curse she rarely used and was darn sure she was going to get out of her system before there was a little Kim and Shego running around, spinning to face the tv with her head spinning even faster. She could barely take in the implications of that, for her, for Kim, for Drake and Molly. For Betty even. Yet for all those questions, there was one certainty in her mind. This had her father's grubby finger prints all over it and she wasn't surprised when the live broadcast cut to what was clearly a recording of him, looking for all the world like he was about to give a press conference.
Part of Shego wanted nothing more than to switch off the tv in disgust, yet that emotive part for once lost out; pressed down as Shego absorbed what details she could while the words washed over her. He stood dressed not in his Global Justice uniform but, with jarring hypocrisy, in a smart black suit; visually glossing over the fact that he had been part of the organisation he was outing. He stood alone of course, the image absent even the imposing figure of Hego. Of course no one would share this moment with him, never having been happier than when the spotlight was on him. Which of course would be what this was all about. Surely as he was dressing it up to the contrary, this would be done solely for the purpose of serving his own ends. The question was, what was that end? Knowing she would get no answers to that question here, Shego finally did switch off the tv with a scowl that proved much less cathartic than she might have imagined.
The coffee both forgotten and now no longer needed, Shego made her way back up to where she had left Kim still sleeping. While she had no idea how she was going to break this to her, she knew that she couldn't keep this from her.
It was a question she didn't have to answer as by the time she slipped back into Kim's bedroom, she found her sitting up in bed with the same worried expression on her face Shego knew she carried with her. How she knew was also quickly answered as she saw the Kimmunicator clutched in her hand.
'….and that's all I know so far Kim. Going by the interview he gave, he says he has proof to back up his claims although he hasn't given any real details on what that might be. At least nothing that has made the mainstream media yet. Although we know they weren't the first people he spoke to.'
So…there might have been a few things Shego had missed from the words she had tuned out. Thankfully and without any prompting Wade continued, neatly filling in those gaps for her.
'The CIA is unsurprisingly all over this. There have been some very intense phone calls and emails going back and forth inside Langley, that's for sure.'
Shego wasn't entirely sure she wanted to know how Wade knew that. And while she wouldn't admit that she had moved beyond grudging acceptance of his uses to if not caring about him then at least worrying about him. 'I'm sure. Just be careful what you are listening to. They are bound to be a lot more suspicious and alert right now.'
'Well…learning that they have had a secret intelligence organisation under your nose for years will do that.' Wade nodded. 'And you are right. They have really upped their security. Just not enough to stop me. Mostly though I think they are annoyed that they didn't get it first.'
'They didn't?' Shego asked.
'No. Apparently your father approached the Senate Oversight Council first. I'm not sure why. But I'm willing to bet he has his reasons.'
'I'm sure he does.' Shego replied, knowing she shouldn't be surprised that Wade was all over this. She was though. 'You'll let us know if you hear anything.'
'Of course.' Wade gave a serious nod before he signed off. Barely had the Kimmunicator gone silent than it beeped back to life again, a single button press from Kim causing the blank screen to switch to an image of Dr Director who cut straight to the point.
'I take it you've heard.'
'Oh, we've heard.' Kim answered. 'Just tell us where you need us.'
'Right now, I need you exactly where you are.' Dr Director said firmly. 'And no, it's not just because of what you have been through.'
That would have been enough for Shego, who was relieved she didn't have to go ten rounds with her boss on this. When had she started to think of her like this? Pushing aside the question of when she had started to think of her that way, Shego couldn't help but focus on the caveat in that statement. Still, she was willing to hear Betty about what the 'not just because' might mean.
'Fine.' Kim said grudgingly, knowing full well that she would lose any argument here on two fronts. 'Is there anything about this that hasn't made the news?'
'A lot.' Dr Director replied. 'Too much for me to explain in the time I have. I don't want to risk this connection being discovered. So I'm sending someone to brief you in person.'
'And you don't think a stranger hanging around the house will raise suspicion?' Shego asked.
'Hardly a stranger.' Dr Director replied with the smile of a poker player who has just drawn a full house. 'A mother should be with her daughter at a time like this.'
—
'Remind me again why we are here?' Shego asked as she shifted slightly on the chair outside the Waiting Room. Not that it was uncomfortable, the whole feel of this private clinic a world away from the General Hospital and it's cheap fittings she had imagined. No, it was more that she was uncomfortable. A hospital was still a hospital. Not that that was the only reason. 'I don't see why you couldn't give Kim a checkup yourself.'
'You do know there is a huge difference between brain surgery and foetal development.' Anne said with just the barest hint of sarcasm. 'It's hardly my field.'
'Well…I'm sure you are just as smart as this Dr Felton. I'm just not sure about some old guy putting his hands all over Kimmie.'
'I get that a lot.'
Shego's head whipped around as the gentle feminine voice slipped into her ears, her eyes settling on a woman roughly Anne's age give or take a few years. Her bright blonde hair had a few hints of silver around the temples that caught the light as she moved to hug Anne, her pure white lab coat crinkling around the red silk shirt and knee length black skirt she wore under it.
'Abbi and I have been friends for years. She was my Doctor when I carried Kim. And the twins. And I trust her much more than I do myself when it comes to these matters.'
'Well…I can't argue with that.' Shego rose to offer a hand now that she and Anne had broken the hug. 'My apologies.'
'Don't worry about it.' Abbi smiled back. 'It's natural to be nervous. But you have nothing to be nervous about. I'll take good care of Kim. I promise. If you will all wait here, I will perform an initial exam. Kim, please, come on through. It's been too long. You have to tell me all about this charming young woman you have managed to woo.'
Shego felt her cheeks burn, which was an unusual feeling for her. After all this was hardly the first perfect stranger to have heard of her and her reputation. Maybe it was simply because this time someone seemed to have heard something good about her.
'I can understand why you don't like Doctors.' Anne soothed. 'Abbi really is the best though.'
'It's not that I don't like doctors. Although maybe I'll like them a little less now that I know my father had one of them experiment on me like a damn lab rat.' Shego honestly hadn't planned on saying that despite that thought having been bouncing around the back of her head. A thought that, while horrible, was better than thinking her father had done it himself. 'Besides, I've really only met two before today. You. And Dr Drakken. And you really come out ahead of him by miles.'
'You know, I keep forgetting. He actually is a Doctor, isn't he.' Anne mused.
'Well..he got his Doctorate.' James replied a little stiffly. 'Barely I might add. But yes, he is a Doctor. Admittedly one that gives the rest of us scientists a bad name.'
'Mad scientist.' Shego pointed. 'And bad scientist too. Sure, he could knock up a halfway decent robot. But he mostly used those to try and steal things other people had invented.'
'Drew did always have a certain skill for robotics.' James said grudgingly. 'Even if his first attempt was pretty crude.'
'Shame his second wasn't.' Shego felt a resurgence of the old pang on guilt for the part she had played in that. Even if all she had done was simply ignore Drakken as he had his fun with his robot girlfriends. 'I'm glad we won't be seeing those things again. Or him either.'
'I agree with that.' James nodded.
'Are we talking about Drakken? I always said you could do better than him.'
'I've always been curious which super villain you thought I would have been a good match for.' Shego replied a shade sarcastically. 'James, Anne; this my mother, Isabel Langton.'
'Well..I'd hardly say it's a long list.' Isabel replied coyly. 'But maybe we can talk about that later. It's a pleasure to meet you both, even under such unexpected circumstances. I do owe you my thanks for taking care of my daughter.'
'Well…she is almost part of the family. Actually, I suppose we are family now. Since we are both going to be Grandparents.' Anne said without comment on familial resemblance as strong as the one shared by her and Kim. Motherly genes seemed to run strong in both families. Shego couldn't help wondering which would win out when it came down to it. She clamped down on this question as Anne guided Isabel into the chair next to her with a conspiratorial arm around her shoulder.
'Looks like they are in cahoots already.' Shego whispered to James, affecting an air of resigned acceptance when in truth she was actually relieved. She would have hated for there to have been any rift between these two families. Luckily she was spared any of that by the reappearance of Dr Felton.
'I'm finished for now. You can all come through.'
'So…what's the diagnosis Doc.' Shego was the first to make her way over to where Kim lay on the small bed in the corner of the admittedly surprisingly warm office with its walls and floor of dark polished wood, almost as unlike a doctors office as she could have imagined. Apart from the slight antiseptic smell in the air.
'Well…she is pregnant.' Abbi said without a hint of irony. 'Almost three months pregnant from the Ultrasounds I just took.'
'Well..we know that.' Shego said a touch reproachfully before those words actually registered in her mind. 'Wait…what? Three months? When we got back from…what happened, Kim was only 7 weeks pregnant. These babies can't have grown five weeks in a couple of days.'
'It seems they can.' Abbi corrected. 'Kim told me the same and I've double checked my findings. They are correct.'
'But that means…if that rate of development continues.' Anne replied almost disbelievingly.
'Then you will have two bouncing Grandchildren in six months. Maybe less. I wish I could be more certain.' Abbi said apologetically. 'I think we should arrange another check up for a week's time. That should help prove my thinking.'
'Kim, why don't you take everyone to get something to drink.' Isabel suggested as she took in the stunned expression shared between James, Anne and Shego. 'I think I saw a passable cafe in the lobby. I'll be along in a few minutes.'
'I'm not wrong you know.' Abbi said a shade reproachfully as Isabel closed the door behind them, misinterpreting the reason Isabel had remained behind.
'I know you aren't.' Isabel said softly. 'Tell me, did you take any bloods from Kim?'
'I did.' Abbi said suddenly wary.
'Good. I need you to run one more test on them. You should have the chemicals needed in this building.' Isabel replied.
'Of course. It's natural for Grandparents to worry. More so than parents. I'm sure everything you are looking for will be there.' Abbi soothed
'So am I. That's what worries me.'

And that's shaken things up hasn't it. On several levels. It's funny to me that I'm finally bringing to life an idea that I had over ten years ago. It was always in the future of this story and honestly I wasn't sure I would get there. I've been on a real roll planning this out and already got the next few chapters planned along with a end point as well. Anyone thinking about getting into writing, I can't stress this tip enough. Before you start writing anything, know your end point.
