Hello everyone~ I don't own digimon, etc.
T.K. stared at the blindingly bright computer screen in the dark room. He blinked hard and looked around the computer lab before turning back to the screen. Wisemon was coming for him in the real world, which meant that even Gennai's plan to stay out of the digital world wouldn't keep him safe, and further yet, was putting his friends in even more danger.
Inhaling shakily he straightened his shoulders and lifted his digivice to the screen, the familiar beeps rang through the silent room and then he was whisked away into the digital world.
Davis could feel the tension boiling in Ken as they all waited outside the front of the school for T.K. There was enough commotion from all the people leaving after the game that their awkward silence wasn't as overwhelming as it should have been.
Finally, as the crowd thinned, Davis yelled out to one of the other basketball team members as he was walking past them. "Hey, where's T.K.?"
"Huh? Oh, T.K. left out the back like 10 minutes ago." He waved at Davis and caught up with his friends.
Ken made everyone jump as he cursed loudly, letting out a low growl as he took out his phone. Everyone watched as Ken put the phone to his ear and after a few seconds they heard T.K.'s voice—but it was his voicemail. Ken clenched his fist around his phone and lifted his arm up like he wanted to throw it to the ground in anger. "Damn it!" Ken yelled into the phone. "Answer your damn phone T.K.!"
None of them had seen Ken lose it like that before and it left most of them speechless. Kari stepped forward, a worried yet determined look on her face. "What's going on?"
Ken couldn't help but feel some contempt toward Kari even though he knew none of this was her fault. "You know about as much as I do." His words full of accusation.
Davis frowned. "Hey, don't take it out on Kari because T.K.'s—"
Ken let out a loud frustrated laugh, interrupting Davis. "You know what, you're right. I shouldn't be taking any of this out on Kari, right?" he directed his question at Kari.
Yolie saw the situation getting out of hand and swiftly stepped in the middle of the group, leaving Cody standing to the side in a silent panic. "How about we all take a deep breath and calm down?"
Kari looked to the ground in frustration. "T.K.…"
Matt sat in the corner of the small studio he'd been in with his band for the past several days, strumming his guitar lightly, tuning it as everyone sat relaxing from a long days practice.
A hum of his phone caught his attention, and he glanced over at it lying on the table beside him. He frowned seeing Ken's name. "Hello?" he answered.
"Hey." Ken's greeting was curt.
"What's up?" Matt knew it had something to do with T.K.
Ken was silent for a moment. "I think…" Ken hesitated. "I think something's wrong with T.K."
Matt closed his eyes with frustration, his chest tightening. "Mmm… what's going on now?"
"Are you at home?" Ken asked.
"No." Matt frowned. "What happened?"
Ken sighed. "Well…"
T.K. took a minute to orient himself as he stood in the dark, a brusque breeze fluttering through the open field around him. The night sky was clouded over and everything was eerily quiet. He inhaled deeply and let out a shaky breath as he placed his digivice in his pocket. He adjusted his grey hoodie, wrapping it closer to his neck as he headed towards the forest ahead.
Once inside the cover of the trees T.K. heard that one familiar voice that took almost all the tension away. "T.K.!" Patamon called as he swooshed into his arms.
"Hey." T.K. spoke softly, petting his friend.
Patamon looked at T.K. for a few moments before frowning. "What's wrong?"
T.K. shook his head and forced his lips into a crooked smile. "Nothing."
Patamon narrowed his eyes at T.K. but shrugged. "Why did you need me to meet you out here in the middle of the night?"
T.K. hesitated. "I have things I need to do now that school is out for the summer."
Patamon frowned curiously. "In the middle of the night?"
"Uhm…" T.K. tried to think of the right words to use that wouldn't worry Patamon too much. "There has just been weird things happening lately and I need to understand why."
Patamon seemed confused. "Just the two of us?"
T.K. nodded. "Yeah. What? You don't want to spend the summer with me?" he asked jokingly.
Patamon crossed his arms defensively. "I do! But…" he looked up at T.K. worriedly. "Do the others know?"
T.K. pursed his lips. "No."
Patamon tilted his head. "What's going on T.K.?"
"I'll explain on the way to the ruins. All right?" T.K. pulled out his digivice.
Davis and Ken waved goodbye to everyone in the parking lot. As Ken started to get into his car, Davis walked up to him. "Hey."
Ken sighed. "What is it? You want a ride home?"
Davis shook his head. "No. Actually, I wanted to ask you what that was all about with Kari."
"What?" Ken frowned.
"You were being really rude. She hasn't done anything to T.K."
Ken cringed at Davis' ignorance. "Just forget it. I'll apologize to her properly later."
"No. I'm not going to just forget it." Davis scowled at Ken. "Kari is just as worried about T.K. as the rest of us. Probably more."
Ken laughed. "I highly doubt that." Ken started to turn to get into his car.
Davis grabbed Ken's arm and pulled him back. "Seriously, what is your problem?"
"My problem is that a lot of this boils down to things that happened between Kari and T.K. right before he left for Hokkaido."
Davis released Ken's arm, frowning in confusion. "What do you mean? What happened?"
"It's not really my place to say, Davis. Why don't you go ask Kari?"
Davis took a step back from Ken and looked at the ground. "Am I the only one in the dark about this?"
Ken sighed. "Maybe. I honestly don't know what Cody knows about the situation."
Davis looked up at Ken. "Yolie knows too?"
"She is Kari's best friend."
"Just tell me. What? Were they dating or something?"
"No." Ken let out a deep breath. "Listen. I'm sorry that I took my frustration out on Kari. It's not her fault. I know that. But I just lost my composure."
Davis nodded. "Yeah. Okay." He turned shaking his head at Ken.
T.K. recounted the events that had led up to him "running away" to the digital world, starting with the very first encounter with Wisemon and ending on what Gennai had told him. Angemon remained silent as he flew toward the ruins, taking in all the information T.K. had been keeping to himself the past few months.
"So…" Angemon finally spoke, the ruins within sight ahead of them. "If I digivolve past champion, I'm risking your life?"
T.K. grimaced. "That's what Gennai said."
"I put you through that much pain when I digivolved to save Davis and Cody?"
"It wasn't you. Besides, I wouldn't have had you do things any differently even we'd known." T.K. tried to reassure his friend.
Angemon set down in the clearing beside the ruins and let T.K. climb down before returning to Patamon. "So," he spoke to T.K. wearily. "What exactly are we looking for here?"
"My crest was here. There could be something else that might help me figure out what Wisemon wants from me."
Patamon nodded. "Do any of the others know you came here tonight?"
"Not yet." T.K. replied exasperatedly.
"They're going to searching for us then?"
"Probably." T.K. admitted. "That's why I wanted to go here now—in case they come here looking for us later."
"But T.K." Patamon protested. "Why haven't you told them all of this? Why are you keeping it a secret?"
T.K. was silent for a long time before responding. "I don't even really know what's going on. How to I explain that I'm seeing this digimon that technically doesn't exist anymore? How do I explain that Gennai told me to stay out of the digital world for my own safety? How do I explain I have to be here because I'm terrified of what might happen to them because Wisemon is after me? How do I explain that by being in the real world I'm putting them at risk?"
Patamon went silent.
Matt opened the door to the apartment wearily, it'd been a long day at practice and now he had to deal with T.K.'s latest incident at school. Ken had relayed what happened during the game as well as listened to a long winded voicemail from T.K.'s coach he had missed before. Mentions of T.K. not eating properly and wanting to talk to their parents.
He flipped the lights on and tossed his stuff down inside his room haphazardly as he headed toward T.K.'s room. He knocked lightly. "T.K.…" he tried not to let the irritation in his voice come through, but he worried it had.
After a minute Matt knocked again, a little louder. "Come on T.K., we need to talk." He turned the door knob and pushed the door open a bit—dark. "You're kidding me. What teenager goes to bed early the day school gets out for summer?" He grumbled before reaching in and flipping T.K.'s light on and speaking loudly. "I'm coming in!"
He shoved the door all the way open, staring in confusion at the empty room. T.K.'s bed was made, the whole room was cleaned and looked fairly untouched except for T.K.'s few belongings sitting on the nightstand and desk. "Seriously?" Matt pulled out his phone and dialed T.K.'s number, slightly panicked. It went straight to voicemail.
T.K. pulled his phone from his pocket and turned it back on, he saw a missed call from both Ken and Matt. He cleared the notifications and clicked on the flashlight to shine down the corridor ahead of them. "It's like a labyrinth." T.K. grumbled as Patamon clung to his shoulder nervously.
"Don't get us lost in here T.K." Patamon squeaked.
T.K. almost had to laugh at his little friend. "Don't worry. Worst case, we'll just slowly starve to death."
"Not funny T.K." Patamon hissed.
Even though Patamon was obviously afraid, T.K. felt much safer and more confident as he walked through the old stone passages. "Just tell me if you see anything."
"Like what?" Patamon cowered closer to T.K.
"I don't know. Just anything that catches your attention."
Patamon huffed. "That's not very comforting!"
T.K. and Patamon continued down the same corridor for nearly an hour before Patamon chirped worriedly. "Maybe we should turn around now."
T.K. shook his head. "Not yet."
"What are we looking for down here T.K.? If what you said was true, you already got the crest—"
"If what I said was true…?" T.K. narrowed his eyes at Patamon, shrugging him off his shoulder.
"I didn't mean it like that, T.K." Patamon defended. "I'm just saying that I don't know what we're doing here. Alone."
T.K. closed his eyes with frustration. "I thought we were doing this together, not alone. I had to start somewhere, and this was it. Am I doing this alone, Patamon?"
"Don't try to push me away too, T.K.!" Patamon yelled.
T.K. inhaled deeply and started walking again. "Sorry." He spoke softly. Patamon stared at T.K.'s back with concern before following after him.
Suddenly T.K.'s phone rang—loudly. Startling both of them, the flashlight on T.K.'s phone turning off as T.K. looked at the screen. "Matt…"
"That wasn't very nice, T.K." Patamon huffed, clinging back to his shoulder tightly.
"What? Hanging up on Matt or having volume up so high?" he forced a chuckle from his shaking lips.
"Both." Patamon grumbled.
Matt held his breath, the phone rang instead of going straight to voicemail. "Pick up, pick up…. come on T.K."
T.K.'s voicemail answered.
Matt clicked the end button on his phone and tapped on Sora's name. After just a couple of rings he heard her voice on the other line. "Hello!"
"Sora, I'm freaking out a little."
"What's wrong?" she asked worried.
"It's T.K." he felt a lump in his throat. "I don't know where he's at and he isn't answering his phone."
"He's almost 18 Matt." Sora responded sadly.
Matt leaned against the wall, pushing his hair from his forehead. "No, you don't understand, Ken called me, something happened during the game tonight, it freaked everyone out. He thought T.K. was going to pass out at one point."
"I'm coming over."
"What do I do? Do I call the police?" Matt walked back into T.K.'s room. "I mean, all his clothes are here and everything, he has to come home, right?"
"They won't do anything for at least 24 hours Matt. Just try to relax, I'll be there soon."
"Okay…" Matt sat on the edge of T.K.'s bed and hung up the phone. Suddenly something next to T.K.'s computer caught his attention. A folded piece of paper with his name on it.
Matt stood up and grabbed the paper hurriedly.
Matt,
I'm sorry. I'm okay. I'll be back before school starts up in the fall.
T.K.
Matt's hands shook as he re-read the note over and over. A knock on the front door pulling him out of his daze, he hadn't realized how long he had been staring at the note.
He opened the door and Sora looked at him worriedly. "Matt? What's wrong?"
Matt shook his head, confused. "T.K. left."
Sora frowned. "Wait, what?"
Matt handed Sora the note and walked back into the apartment. "I don't think T.K. even came home after the game. I think he was planning on leaving before he went to school today." The tone of disbelief evident in Matt's voice.
"This can't be right. T.K. wouldn't just leave without saying anything to you." Sora tried to argue.
"Something isn't right. T.K.'s in some kind of trouble. But…" Matt's eyes filled with tears. "I'm his brother, but I have no idea what going on with him. I don't even know where to start looking for him."
"Here." T.K. pressed his fingers against the cold stone wall, the runes looked long faded away, even though they had clearly been etched into the stone before.
Patamon narrowed his eyes at the faded markings and shrugged. "I can't make anything out."
T.K. shrugged. "There was a room ahead."
Patamon eyed T.K. worriedly. "What was inside?"
"I don't know. The crest stopped me." T.K. turned around another corner, shining his flashlight ahead. There it was—the dead end that had given him the crest, and the hidden room behind it. "Patamon, I'm going to need you to blast through that dead end."
I'm already working on the next chapter, so hopefully it'll be out soon! 3 Thank you for all the reviews and support.
