Dylan turned to lizzie, before gently taking hold of her wrist pulling her in to the house. Looking at her, he asked "What, are you sure?"
nodding her head, she walked to their bedroom and pulled the test out of her carryon bag that she brought over with her. "I took a test back home, I was going to tell you but all this happened and I did not know how to," she said passing it to him. Taking out of her hand he looked at the little window that showed the positive sign in. looking back up at lizzie, he placed the test on to the counter top next to him and pulled her in to a hug and then placed a kiss on to her forehead.
"you're not mad with me for telling you now?" she asked as he let her go.
"Mad, why would I be mad, I only wish you had told me sooner," he said.
The pair were interrupted by sara who walked back in and then spotted the test on the side.
"Is the something that you want to tell me?" she asked looking from her son to lizzie.
"Lizzies pregnant mom, she has only just told me," Dylan said moving to stand behind lizzie. Saras face, lit up, and a huge smile grew across her face, pulling her son and lizzie in to a hug, she said "congratulations, I am happy for you," she said wiping a tear from her eyes.
"Mom what's going on," gabby asked from the back door
"Nothing, I think everything has just got to me, I think I am going to go to bed," sara said turning to her daughter.
"I think I will put the fire out," Dylan said walking towards the garden, grabbing the test on his way out. Ushering his nieces in to the house, Dylan quickly dropped the test in to the bin before taking some sand and scattering on to the fire pit and making sure it was out.
Lizzie walked in to the bedroom and quickly changed into her pjs and got in to the bed. Picking up her book she started to read, as Dylan walked in to the room. Walking over towards the bed, he ripped off his t-shirt and tossed it to the laundry bin in the corner saying "im going to take a shower, get this bonfire smell off" before walking towards the bathroom. He returned ten minutes later with a towel around his waist and using another one rubbing his hair. Sitting on the edge of the bed Dylan finished drying his hair. Looking over at lizzie he asked "so when did you find out? that you were pregnant,"
"The morning I stubbed my toe, just before the exercise, and I couldn't say as my dad would have found out before you, and you deserved to know first," she said putting down her book. Looking him square in the face, she added "i was going to say something once I had been to the doctors, and got it confirmed, and then you got the call from your mom so I did not get round to seeing the doctor, but I am pretty sure,"
"We will make you an appointment to see the doctor and make sure you are ok,"
"Fine, but let's not tell anyone else, at least until your father's funeral is over, and by that, I mean a few days after," she said as Dylan removed the towel from his waist and tossed it over to the laundry bin, missing it he stood up and walked over to where it landed, picked it up and dropped it in to the bin. Turning to face her, Dylan walked over to the bed and slid in to the other side, pulling lizzie close to him.
The following morning, lizzie and Dylan went to the doctors, where her pregency was confirmed and that she was just over three months. Once they were back in the car and looking down at the small scan image that they had been given. Dylan turned to lizzie and said
"i think it's time you phoned your dad and let him know, you know about the baby,"
"Yeah, I know and I will but I think I might wait till this evening, given the time difference," she replied slipping the scan in to her bag.
The next two weeks passed quickly and the day of funeral arrived. Pulling on her black dress, lizzie let out a sigh of relief as it did up. Slipping on her black shoes, she walked in to the living room and helped Dylan with his tie as he was struggling. Pulling her in to a hug, he just held her.
"Dyl, he is here," gabby said as the Hurse pulled up outside. Walking over to his mom, Dylan wrapped his arm around her Sholders and hugged her before walking out side. Lizzie followed closing the door behind them. Taking the car key her bag, lizzie unlocked the rental car and got in to the driver's seat, as Dylan helped his mother in to his sister's car before running over and getting in to the passenger seat of their car.
Reaching over, lizzie brushed Dylan's hand in comfort before pulling off and following Dylan's sister's car and hurse to the church. When they arrived at the church, Dylan reached over and grabbed lizzies' hand and squeezed it. Looking in to his eyes, lizzie saw they had lost their sparkle and looked void and empty and tears were falling down. Reaching her free hand up, she gently placed it on to his cheek before reaching up and placing a kiss on his lips.
Following the coffin In, lizzie held on tight to Dylan's hand, keeping him close to her. Half way through Dylan stood up and walked to the lectern to deliver the eulogy.
"My dad, was -" he started but his voice broke. Lizzie feeling her heart shatter quickly stood up and walked over to Dylan and took his hand in hers.
"I can't," he whispered in to her ear.
"I never met Michael, but I know he was a good man, from the way he raised his son, who is a kind and amazing man, um, and he will be missed by his Lovley wife sara and daughter gabby and grandchildren Beth and Sophia. They will be a massive hole that can never be filed," lizzie said before Dylan whispered in to her ear again.
"Thank you,"
Standing on her toes, she placed a tender kiss on his cheek before taking her seat again, where Dylan followed before the pallbearers carried the coffin out to the graveyard. Reaching down lizzie took Dylan's hand in hers and squeezed it tight. Standing up to follow, turned to face Dylan and smiled weakly and lead him out in to the sun, the pair of them blinking as their eyes adjusted to the bright light. They walked over and joined sara and gabby by the open grave and watched as the coffin was lowered in.
Six weeks later
Walking in to the apartment building where she lived with Dylan, Lizzie saw a large parcel left outside her door. Picking it up she saw her grandfather's scruffy handwriting if it was not for the printed label, she doubted the parcel would have made it to Australia. Juggling the parcel, several bags of food shopping and opening the door, lizzie stepped over the threshold and placed the parcel on the sofa and took the shopping in to the kitchen and put it all away. Picking up the sisters, she carefully cut along the tape that closed. Opening the box, she saw a second box with a letter on top. Taking the letter out of the box, lizzie curled up in the armchair that stood by the window and started to read.
Dearest lizzie,
You grandmother would want you to have her wedding dress for your wedding, it was made from a large tablecloth as meatal was rationed and the buttons come from your great grandmothers dress from the 1910s. Plus, it is just sitting at the back of the cupboard gathering dust. I wish she was here to see you were it, she would be so proud of the young woman you have become. I also have put in the box her compact and lipstick mirror which her parents gave her along with her bag. I feel that I would not be able to make it over for the wedding given my age so think of this of having both of us there on your big day when ever that may be.
remember that I always love you,
Gramps
Lizzie had not realised that Dylan had walked in to the flat and saw her crying, tears streaming down her face. crossing the room quickly, Dylan wrapped his arms around lizzie, and pulled her in to a hug.
"Hey what's wrong, sweetheart," he asked placing a kiss on to her brow.
passing the letter over to him, lizzie wiped her eyes before saying and pointing to the box on the table,
"Gramps sent my grandmothers wedding dress over, he wants me to wear it for the wedding,"
using his thumb, Dylan wiped away the tears. Pushing him away gently, lizzie stood up, walked over to where she had left the box and gently lifted the inner box out of the packing box. Placing it on the coffee table, she lifted the lid and saw a third slightly battered box of cream, with a very small box wrapped in bubble wrap on top and a small item also wrapped in bubble wrap that was soft so lizzie took that to be the bag and she was right when she picked it up and carefully undid the wrapping and saw a small white beaded bag, opening it she saw a pale pink silk handkerchief, pulling it out she felt something hard inside, carefully unwrapping the cloth, she found small silver broach inside that was a anchor with a horse shoe on it, and lizzie recognized it as a sweetheart broach that women would often wear if the husbands or boyfriends were in the services. Picking the smaller box up, she undid the wrapping and opened the old looking box. Nestled inside on a bed of white satin, was a brass-coloured compact with mother of pearl inset on top. Pressing the little latch to open it, lizzie gently removed the powder puff that sat on top of a sifter. Although it was empty, it still had the smell of the powder that it uses to hold. Lizzie could remember her grandmother sitting at the dressing table applying the powder to her face before dabbing some on to lizzies' nose. Trying to hold back tears as this was the last memory, she had of her grandmother even at twenty-six and old enough to apply her own make-up her grandmother did the same on the night before lizzie left for Australia for the first time. Three months later her grandmother had died. Closing the compact she put it to one side and picked up the little lipstick mirror. Again, it was a brass-coloured mirror with mother of pearl on the back, that would be held on to the lipstick with a clip. Placing it back in to the box with the compact, lizzie put the lid on and put them to one side before gently lifting the large if slightly battered box out and with great care lifted the lid and gasped at the dress that was inside.
The dress was a creamy white silk damask with a sweetheart neckline and what lizzie remembered from the photo that sat on the sideboard of her grandparents' house long sleeves and a mid-length circle skirt. Carefully lifting it out lizzie saw the little pearl buttons that ran down the back of the dress from the neck to the waist. Holding it against her, she knew that she would have to wait till the baby was born to fit in the dress. Turning to Dylan she smiled and said
"i am just going to put this somewhere safe,"
Carefully she folded the dress up and put it to the dress box and put that back in to the big box along with the box that contained her accessories and picked it up.
"Can you give me a hand please," lizzie said as she walked to the second bedroom
"Sure," Dylan said as he jumped up and followed her, "Do you want me to put it in the wardrobe?" he added
"Please," she said as he put the box at the back, before taking her in his arms and placing a kiss on her lips.
"Thank you," she said
