A/NSo this may come as a surprise but I am alive! I've just been taking five-ever to finish this chapter... whoops, my bad... but here it is! Yay? I hope it's worth the wait...

I pull the pitcher out from one of the cabinets on the wall and close it gently, as not to disturb the adults in their meeting. I make my way to the sink and turn on the tap, watching as the water slowly fills up the pitcher.

"Are you feeling better?" I jump. I hadn't realized William was right behind me. My jumps startles him and he takes a step back, resting a gentle hand against my shoulder.

"My apologies, I didn't mean to frighten you."

"It's fine, I should've noticed you were there. As your host, it is impolite of me to not be attentive to you."

William smiles again and lets out a small huff of laughter.

"You are a fine host. Being preoccupied is not always bad. But as I asked earlier, are you feeling alright? I had heard from someone that you were sent home after your test."

Does he know? I look up into his eyes, searching, searching for something to give away his motive. All I can see is concern. Stop that Kathleen! He's merely being kind. I force myself to take a deep breath. I put on a smile and focus on the tiny furrow between William's brows instead of his eyes. They were a beautiful storm grey color but somehow they seem so... dead. It is as if there is nothing deeper than his skin. It is a trait shared by many Abnegation members.

"I am indeed feeling much better. Thank you for your concern William."

"Of course," He says and suddenly something flickers across his face.

"How do you feel about tomorrow?" My eyes quickly meet his and I blink in surprise. There is emotion in those stormy grey eyes of his. He's actually nervous.

"William, we aren't-"

"I know," He cuts me off quickly, "we aren't supposed to talk about the ceremony but, I'm just, I can't... I'm worried." His eyes drop to the floor, darting left and right.

"William," I'm so unused to this, he is always so... blank, "trust yourself. It will all be fine."

William swallows before looking at me.

"No matter what happens... We are friends correct?"

I blink in shock. What? Where is this coming from? The turmoil in his eyes is concerning. He's truly conflicted inside and I can't figure out why, but I want to do my best to put his mind at ease.

"Of course William," I say, forcing my face into a smile. William sighs, his face easing into a far more relaxed expression.

"Thank you. I apologize for bothering you." Back to the emotionless Abnegation robot. Maybe William and I aren't as different as I once thought. I turn back to the pitcher and grab the handle but pause before lifting it up.

"William," I say, not turning to face him.

"Yes?" I can hear the confusion in his voice. He is far more open tonight than he has ever been around me before.

"It may be out of line for me to say this, but don't be afraid to be selfish tomorrow. Do what is best for you." He doesn't respond and I become nervous that I've messed up. I should not have said that... he's a councilman's son... He'll run in and tell our fathers, I'll be punished...

"Of course," He responds, his voice a whisper, "you do the same. I pick up the pitcher and then turn to face him and smile. He smiles back but there is tension in his eyes.

I see movement in the doorway and my eyes quickly dart over. Father enters the kitchen and glancing back at William I can see his face close up again, all emotion gone. My heart starts racing. Did Father hear? I look over at him.

"Kathleen, William. I was worried something was wrong as you two were gone so long. Is everything well." William turns to face my father, a fake smile plastered to his face.

"No . Kathleen merely decided to wash the pitcher to ensure it was clean and I was keeping her company. My apologies, I may have been a distraction. That was selfish of me."

I stare at William's back. He's taking the blame... Thank you William. Father, who had been looking at me the whole time finally looks at William.

"No worries William. You admitting the fault as yours was very selfless of you. Now come, you two." Father turns and makes his way to the living room. As William and I follow, I pick up my stride to walk by William's side.

"Thank you William," I say under my breath to ensure Father doesn't hear. William turns to look at me, a soft smile on his face.

"I merely wish to see you safe."
