"We all make mistakes in the heat of passion, Jimbo." - a dad like me
Home, Sweet, Home
Dorms were new to Jaune. Sharing a room with three girls was also new. He lived with more than twice that number at home, so it wasn't completely foreign territory. Neither was the tongue lashing of something he didn't do. "How are you the leader!?" Weiss yelled to no one in particular. Jaune idly dug around in his ear to make sure he wasn't hearing impaired yet. The rant was going on for a solid five minutes and everyone else in the room was in the same boat.
"Weiss, it's late, I nearly died again, and I need some sleep." Is what he said to placate her. "We can ask Ozpin in the morning after classes, alright?" The heiress stopped her rant, proceeding to look at Jaune with measuring gaze. He couldn't really care. Shower and sleep sounded divine right now. "You can go shower first if you want." Jaune sweetened the deal.
"You are very persuasive. I'll agree this once." With that, she grabbed a spare change of clothes, and headed into the bathroom. The dorm itself wasn't small, able to fit four beds comfortably with bookshelves and four desks with it. Decorating could be done tomorrow after sleep. Blake sat on her bed, nose deep in a book to ignore the outside world. Ruby on the other hand was jumping on her bed. How she still had energy, he would never know.
"You two go first." He said, walking over to the far bed by the wall. "Wake me up when you're done." Then promptly collapsed onto the mattress.
All things considered; Blake was having a good time. The Schnee was actually not a bad partner despite being stuck up more often than not. She was at least capable of self-awareness when it mattered. Then again, her last partner lowered her standards more than she would like to admit. Maybe it was the rose-tinted goggles of love, but it took much longer to see how far Adam had changed from the boy she once knew. Time and circumstances had that effect she supposed.
The jury was still out for her other teammates. Ruby reminded he too much of a naïve kid who hasn't seen the cruel side of the world. No idea why she wanted to be a huntress, but she'll probably find out sooner than later. Currently, the small brunette was poking Jaune's metallic arm. The owner of it kept mumbling and trying to waive her off with no avail. Now that was a surprise. How a kid that young had a hunter class prosthetic was rare in any part of the world.
Surviving a giant Nevermore is an impressive feat. Surviving one ramming into ruins and then a cliff while on its back should be impossible. His shredded clothes he still wore was proof of that. It looked like his body was just beginning to acclimate to the rigorous lifestyle of a Hunter. Baby fat still showed on parts of his body, almost like Jaune had no training. Almost. Before she could go down that rabbit hole, Weiss came out of the shower, clean and in a nightgown.
"Much better." She said strolling out. The bed that she claimed was in between Ruby and Blake, with Jaune's on the other side of Ruby. "Is that dolt asleep?" asked the heiress looking at the slumped form of her new leader. "Of all the inconsiderate, unqualified idiots…" Weiss began, strolling over to him. "Ruby, stop poking him and give me a hand. You too, Blake." The duo started dragging him into the bathroom with Blake holding the door open. Maybe she does have a nice side.
They plopped Jaune in the bathtub that was still wet from earlier use, his metallic arm creating a loud clinking sound as it impacted. The showerhead was swiftly turned on, causing the leader to abruptly wake up. Coughing and sputtering, he leaned over the bathtub looking around in a daze. "How'd I get here?" he asked.
"We dragged you in because you wouldn't wake up. You're smelly and dirty, and I won't have my leader looking like a hobo."
"Now that's just uncalled for."
"It's a fact. Now get cleaned up." Weiss said and left the bathroom. Ruby waved and quickly followed suit before Blake closed the door.
"Does he have any spare clothes?" Blake asked. Ruby shrugged while Weiss shamelessly started rummaging through his pack. Miscellaneous items were tossed from his pack around the room before she just dumped the whole thing out. A heavy repair kit and a blue onesie that was buried at the bottom of the pack fell out for all to see.
"What is this?" Weiss held out the pajama jumpsuit. Both Ruby and Blake looked at each other.
"It's a… It's a onesie, Weiss." Ruby spoke up first.
"Like for babies?"
"Well, yes. They make ones for adults too." Ruby paused for a second. "Jaune didn't sleep with it last night, I think. He still had his regular clothes on when me and Yang left."
"When did you meet him last night?"
"After you yelled at both me and Yang." Weiss nodded at that and sighed.
"I'm sorry about that. The past couple days have been grating on my nerves and you were not helping." Weiss half apologized; half accused.
"I'm sorry about Yang. She can be a lot sometimes." Ruby said, shuffling awkwardly. A huff came from the heiress.
"I still don't know why Ozpin chose her to be a leader. Or why Jaune is a leader in fact. Neither of them seems qualified." A muffled 'I heard that' came from the bathroom.
"I'm just glad I'm in Beacon. It's like a dream come true." Ruby said longingly.
"Always wanted to be a huntress?" Blake asked sitting back on her bed.
"Ever since I could remember. Valiant heroes, saving people, hunting Grimm. What's not to like?" Mulling it over, Blake did see it did have a certain appeal. The same type of appeal that caused her to join the White Fang at it's inception. Maybe this time it would be different. Lost in her thoughts of the past, Blake went back to her book. Well, at least they're different from the Fang.
Exhaustion still plagued Jaune after the shower. Ruined clothes were balled up in the corner, still wet, and all he had on was a towel around his waist. Water dripped from his shaggy blonde hair and right now, he didn't have a change of clothes. In the mirror, he could see the edge between his prosthetic and his shoulder. The arm was battered and would need maintenance sometime soon. He idly scratched the boundary, Aura flaring up to stop the nails from digging in.
Annoying as it was sometimes, Aura did save his life. He should be dead many times over but wasn't. What the fuck is going on? He asked himself in the mirror. Azure eyes and his face starred back, giving no answer. Frustrated with the lack of clarity, he knocked on the bathroom door on the inside. "Hey, I don't have any clothes in here! Could you please hand me something?" Shuffling was heard outside the door before it was opened slightly. The blue onesie was thrown into the room before it closed.
Hello darkness, my old friend. Swallowing what little pride he had left, Jaune put the thing on. The thought of just walking out without it crossed his mind, but he was the only guy in a room full of girls and he knew it wouldn't end well. They weren't family and they just met each other. A muffled giggle came from Ruby as he opened the door. A tiny smirk could be seen from Blake and Weiss looked extremely amused. "Which one of you went through my stuff?" He asked. Damn this blue monstrosity.
"I did." Weiss said with no hesitation. "It needed to be done. For the sake of decency, after all." Jaune's eye twitched before he sighed. He'd just have to go into Vale at some point this weekend to pick up new clothes. Maybe he could bother Ozpin for payment, though there was a high chance he'll just be shot down. Shelving that thought for tomorrow's Jaune, he went over to his pack and started reorganizing it. School uniforms were issued after they were assigned dorms, so at least he didn't have to worry about that tomorrow.
"So, where'd you get it?" Ruby asked.
"About a year ago. I thought I threw it out months ago, but I guess my sisters had other plans." Jaune said, pulling out his repair kit. Father Arc was kind enough to get him one for prosthetics, even though Jaune was pretty sure he used his saved-up college fund for it.
"Oh, well it looks adorable." Jaune grimaced a little bit at the description. Revenge will be sweet when he gets the chance. There were four desks that were open in the room, so Jaune decided to claim the one in the corner as his own. Sitting down in the chair, Jaune laid out his tools. There was a crash course in maintaining his arm at the hospital, but he wasn't proficient at it. It was just one of those things that only got better with time, he supposed.
There was a struggle rolling up his sleeves in the onesie. The thing was made to be tight with little wriggle room, and it frustrated Jaune. "Screw it." Jaune started unzipping his pajamas when Weiss interrupted him.
"Please refrain from taking your clothes off. You're in the presence of ladies and should act as such." She commanded. Looking back, it looked like Blake was the next to go in the shower.
"Can't work on the arm with this thing on, Snow Angel." Continuing to unzip till he got to mid stomach. "Just look away if you don't like it." There was a grumble but no further arguments. He was able to get his arms and torso out of the furry thing, wrapping the sleeves around his waist. It was definitely less suffocating than having the whole thing on. With an exposed arm, he started taking the protective plates off. Underneath the protective 'skin' there were thin wires that simulated muscle and tendons. Rods of titanium alloy were fashioned in the similar way of ones in an arm, but it was more spacious in case he wanted to customize it.
A miniature Aura reactor was nestled in his bicep, right next to his stump of a shoulder. It was about three inches long, an inch wide, and glowed faintly white. He would take time to marvel at it if someone wasn't heavily breathing down his neck. "Ruby, could you dial that down a bit?" He said, trying to concentrate.
"Sorry." She said, standing over his shoulder, looking down at his arm. "I've just never seen one in person, and it looks so cool." Jaune looked at her and could see the amazement in her eyes, which did help his confidence a bit.
"Grab a seat." There was a frantic shuffling followed by Ruby putting a seat right next to him. She was uncomfortably close as she sat down and leaned over to looking inside his arm. There was a click from behind him from what he could assume Blake getting out of the shower.
"Can I touch it?" she asked pointing at the inner workings.
"Sure. But be careful, it's sensitive." Turns out, the Aura reactor helped him feel with his arm, feeding his nerves sensory information as well as speeding up reaction time by a fraction. Ruby's calloused hand brushed along the metal strands in his forearm, sending strange jolts of something into his brain. A cough came from behind him, but he ignored it.
"It's warm." Ruby said, brushing the synthetic muscle. "Is it normally like that?"
"I wouldn't know. It's the first time someone else has touched it." He said, examining the joints. Someone cleared their throat from behind them. Rolling his eyes, jaune turned around to tell Weiss that she could just turn around if she didn't like how disfigured he looked. "Listen Wei-" was all that he was able to say.
A pair of lilac orbs were currently staring into the depths of his soul. "Well, hello there." Yang said, arms crossed in a tight, white tank top. "What are you doing with Ruby?" For some reason, Jaune thought that she was Ruby's mother for a second. A murderous Aura radiated off her. Before he could open his mouth and potential dig his hole deeper, Ruby came to his rescue.
"We're looking at his metal arm, Yang!" she cheered pulling her in between them and shoving her face next to Yang's. "It looks so cool inside of it, and guess what? He can actually feel it when you touch it! There also looks like there's room for mods and the muscle must have a crazy ductile strength. It's so awesome!" Yang's mood was instantly evaporated upon seeing Jaune's exposed arm. A sly smile came over her face next.
"Well, that's strange. I thought you two were talking about something else…" She proceeded to wiggle her eyebrows at Ruby, instantly turning her scarlet. She rocketed away to the other side of the room in a burst of petals, nearly toppling over Blake in her pajamas.
"Ew, Yang! Don't say that!" She yelled at her sister. Yang was roaring with laughter next him. With a huff, Ruby grabbed her nightwear and stormed into the bathroom. The door slammed shut, disappearing inside. The insinuation was not lost on Jaune, which made it all the worse once Yang stopped laughing.
"So, lover boy." She said sitting down in Ruby's spot right next to him. "You let anyone touch your sensitive parts?" Jaune audibly gulped and looked to his teammates for help. Blake was Nose deep in her book, ignoring the outside world, and Weiss was brushing her hair, keen on staying out of it. Accepting his fate, he turned back to Yang.
"No, just getting used to it. Why are you here anyway?" He responded.
"Oh, just wanted to check on Rubes. She came here ahead of her friends, so I just wanted to make sure she was fitting in." Yang poked some of his exposed synth-muscle. It felt unusually tender. "Looks like I didn't need to worry though." There was a pause before she spoke again. "So how did it happen?" Thank you, Yang, for dropping that landmine of a question.
He could feel the rest of the occupants of the room listen in, Weiss's brushing getting slower, and Blake was still quiet. The story had to be told at some point, might as well get it out of the way. "I…." Jaune tried to put the story to words. "I was an idiot. I thought I could just run away from home and be a Huntsman just like that." He chuckled at the thought. "But I guess life catches up with you one way or another. A Grimm caught me in the forest on the way to Vale. Can you imagine it? Some schmuck kid with no Aura screaming his head off while running for his life?"
The memory gave him phantom pain in his arm, but he told it anyway. He didn't notice Yang touching his robotic hand. "It caught me and took of my arm in a single swing, just like that." His human arm mimed the motion. "You know what the weird part was? I was calm, like 'oh, this kinda sucks' calm. The thing just loomed over me like it was gloating. Something in me snapped and I just got so angry. My life would just be ripped away and no one would even know. So, in what I thought would be the last moments of my life, I stabbed it.
"It fell, and I had this sense of pride before I blacked out." Jaune sighed and leaned back into his chair looking up at the ceiling. "I woke up later in a hospital, this asshole of a huntsman found me almost dead and decided on whim to save me." A soft smile came to his face. "Then the bastard called my family. Let me tell you, nine family members that were both angry and relieved are a nightmare. They chewed me out and were relieved I was okay. Made me realize how much an idiot I was pulling that stunt. The best part? I still wanted to be a Huntsman."
Though he would never know it, everyone in the room was enraptured by the story. Even Ruby was peaking her head out of the bathroom door to listen in. "My family was angry when I said that, and I understood it. I wouldn't want my kid to go out there again either if he almost died. But as it would turn out, Ozpin caught wind of my condition and stepped in. Gave me this new arm and put me under contract. Why, I'll probably never know." He smiled as best as he could. "And the rest is history. I was probably one of the lucky ones to be honest."
Jaune didn't look at Yang's face when he told the story. Memories and putting it into words took most of his attention. It was only now that he noticed she was still holding the prosthetic. Her face looked like she was remembering something, eyes far off in the distance. "Yeah… I guess you were." She finally said.
"Can I get my arm back?" He asked, putting plates back into place. Yang let go and watched as he fixed the rest of the armor back onto the arm. Jaune flexed it back and forth, working the fingers. There was no lag time, and everything felt right. "Good as new. How's your team?" He asked, attempting to change subjects.
"Oh, they're a blast. Nora is a nice little bundle of energy. Ren feels like a parent at times, and Pyrrha seems to be getting along with everyone." She said leaning back in the chair. "I'm trying to plan a night where we all go out to Vale, drink and bond like proper teammates. You guys should come too!" She said excitedly. "Ruby will just have to be the Designated Huntress, but she's done that before. What do you guys say?"
Before Jaune could agree to a night of destressing, Weiss piped up. "Absolutely not. We don't have time for such nonsense. Blake, you agree, right?" The heiress turned to her partner. A shrug came from her in response.
"I'm fine here." She finally said. "But it would be nice to see Vale. How about you Ruby?" All eyes went to the shortest girl in the room, who now wore her pj's. She shuffled her feet and looked away.
"I plead indecision since I can't drink." Ruby finally said. Jaune merely shrugged at the outcome.
"Looks like we're staying in. You guys have fun though." He agreed with his teammates.
"You guys are party poopers. I'll see you later, alright?" With a wave, Yang walked out of the room. Exhaustion was finally taking his toll and he stumbled his way back to bed.
"G'night guys. See you in the morning." And with that, Jaune slept like the dead.
Professor Port's class was a bane among the student body. The man was rotund with a grey mustache that would make anyone jealous. Tales of mighty deeds and beautiful women fell on deaf ears after the first fifteen minutes of class. Currently, Yang drawing a new design for Bumblebee, her bike, and Pyrrha, her partner, was trying desperately to pay attention. Nora was lost in her own world, mind checked out long ago. Ren was fast asleep on the desk next to her; his memory will live on in their hearts.
Team JBRW was below their collection of desks, fairing no better. Ruby was doodling on some paper, Blake was reading her book right in front of the professor, and Weiss was trying desperately to keep Jaune awake. It was amusing to say the least, but the heiress's attempts at waking him up brought back memories from last night. The revelation of how he lost his arm hit a little to close to home for Yang.
Ruby probably wouldn't remember it, but once upon a time, Yang was just as foolish as Jaune. With her stepmom dying, and her dad becoming near useless as result, she grabbed her little sister to try and find her biological mom in the Grimm infested forest. It almost ended with her and Ruby dying to a pack of Grimm if her uncle hadn't shown up. That seemed to snap her father out of his depression and start being a parent again. But like Ruby's mom, Dad was a Hunter, so he was around less often than he liked.
Yang had to grow up fast to take care of her sister, being the surrogate mother Ruby never had. Somehow, she was obsessed with being like her mom. A hero who saved people and fight monsters. Yang had to learn how to fight, just to be sure that she could protect her and make sure Ruby could live in the cruel world. The memories just made her thankful that they were more fortunate than Jaune's experience. God only knows what would have happened if she lost Ruby.
"Do I have any volunteers?" Professor Port asked the class. The out of place question roused some students from their vegetative states. Weiss's hand shot up instantly. "Perfect! Be battle ready in five minutes!" he shouted. Five minutes passed quickly with her coming back in the signature white outfit. The professor dragged in a large cage that was rattling with activity. There's no way…
"Are you ready, Ms. Schnee?" he asked. Weiss nodded her head. An axe came down on the lock, releasing the enraged beast. The Grimm charged Weiss instantly, tusks bared and murder in its red eyes. It was a boar type Grimm with bone plating around the exterior of the body. Instead of dodging like a sensible person, she met the charge head on. Feet skidded backwards as the heiress fought for dominance.
"What is she doing?" Blake asked, voicing everyone's thoughts.
"Wrestling!" Nora piped up from beside her. It seemed to look like that when Heiress disengaged, redirecting the beast to charge against the wall.
"Is it safe to have a Grimm run around like that?" Jaune asked, finally awake.
"I think the professor knows what he's doing." Ruby said, watching Weiss jump from glyph to glyph around the beast. "Its belly is the weak point! Aim for that!" Ruby shouted at Weiss. Blake gave a thumbs up, amused at the heiress's performance.
"I know!" Weiss shouted, lining up and attack in a fencer's stance. The Grimm started spinning in place, like living wheel preparing for an attack. Physics be damned. Weiss didn't move when it charged her a second time, instead, she tensed her body like a wound-up spring. With six feet between them, the heiress skewered the beast in the stomach, timing the thing's rotation just right. Weiss collapsed next to the dead Grimm, panting heavily while Professor Port congratulated her.
"Marvelous! Simply marvelous! We are in the presence of a true Huntress in training." The professor turned to the rest of the class. "Class is dismissed with that wonderful display! Remember combat classes start tomorrow with Professor Goodwitch. Be ready!" Students started filing out before the teacher could finish his spiel. Team YPLN walked out, watching as her sister's team look confused at Weiss's actions.
"I wonder what that was about."
Weiss was angry, there was no question about that. Seeing her leader falling asleep on the first day of class was beyond aggravating. Jaune may have had her sympathy from last nights tale, but he did not deserve to be leader of the team. Qualities she had far outclassed him for the position, and she was sure Ozpin made a mistake. The halls echoed her anger as her custom heels hit the marble tiles. Lost in her thoughts, she didn't notice someone approaching her.
"Hey, Weiss, you alright?" Jaune's voice came from behind her. The voice added fuel to Weiss's rage.
"Alright? Am I alright?" She said turning on him. Confusion was clearly seen in his blue eyes, but she didn't care. "I am just perfect. You on the other hand, are far from it. How you were chosen to be leader, I will never know. But I do know that Ozpin was wrong in choosing you." Her finger pointed at him in an accusing manner. "Not to mention, I just humiliated myself in class with that ungraceful display. You irk me Jaune Arc."
"Valid points…" Jaune said holding his hands up like he was being shot. "Then who do you think should be the leader?"
"Why me, of course!" She yelled at him. Why are you so stupid?
"Alright, lets go ask him then." He said, walking away. Weiss was stunned at the statement. Just like that? "You coming?" Jaune asked, leaving her where she stood. Disbelief and confusion warred within her.
"Just like that? All I had to do was ask?" She said, catching up beside him. A bark of laughter came from Jaune.
"You think I wanted to be leader? No, thank you." The man was oddly relaxed about it. "I just want to be a Huntsman, go about the four years, then retire. I don't want to lead. Too much responsibility for my taste. I'm more of a go-with-the-flow type of guy. If you can be better at it than me, by all means." Weiss honestly couldn't believe it. "I think Ozpin made a mistake too." Jaune turned to her to make sure he met her eyes. "Just next time don't yell at me about it. If there's one thing I learned from my family, it's that communication is key." Weiss looked down in embarrassment at acting as childish as she did.
"I couldn't tell you how many times assuming things bit me in the ass at home. Saphron coming out to us was probably the worst I've seen." He rubbed the back of his head in the memory. "Or was it the time Cinna brought home a dead dog? No, maybe it was when I played hide and seek for twelve hours and told no one?" Weiss stopped listening to him ranting lost in her own thoughts. Communication? It was a foreign idea and was nonexistent in her own family.
Mom drank far too much and was near impossible to hold a conversation. Winter left as soon as she could and joined the Atlas military. Whitley became a political snob who was more of a pain to be around. And then there was her dad. Jacques Schnee was down right emotionally and physically abusive at times. Obsessed with the Schnee Dust Company and neglected his whole family because of it. "Hey, we're here."
Shaken from her more depressing thoughts of her family, Weiss noticed they were at the headmaster's elevator. When did we get here? Jaune pressed the elevator button. A soft ding echoed in the lobby as their transport arrived. The teammates stepped in and waited for the office floor. Nervousness flowed through Weiss as she realized she would have to call out Ozpin's mistake and rectify it by making her the leader. Before she could back out, the elevator doors opened.
The office was spacious, spartan in design and looking over most of Vale. Clockwork above them whirred and clicked in a rhythmic tone. A lone desk and chair were placed near the huge open window. Both were ornate, and housed the headmaster, pen deep in paperwork. "Come in." he said without looking up. As they approached, the smell of coffee wafted through the air. "Mr. Arc, Ms. Schnee, I was not expecting you." He put down his pen and grabbed his signature mug. "How can I help you?"
Weiss was nervous standing in front of the figure of authority. Mustering up her reserves of courage, she spoke up. "I believe you made a mistake, headmaster." She forced the words out. There was a strong urge to look away from him as she spoke.
"Oh?" Ozpin leaned back in his chair, giving her his full attention. "Do tell." To say that she was intimidated would be putting it lightly. With a single word from him, she would be back at Atlas.
"I believe it was a mistake to appoint Jaune as the leader." She spoke again, trying to meet his eyes.
"Explain." He suggested. The tone seemed amused in her ears.
"He has no prior qualifications. He shows little initiative in classes. And he shows little prowess in battling Grimm." She practiced this argument many times in her mind, not believing she would actually have to use it.
"Interesting." Ozpin said swirling his coffee, gaze lost in the liquid. "And what do you think, Mr. Arc?" He asked turning his attention to him.
"I think she's right." Jaune said, not fazed by the man's gaze. "She seemed upset about it, and I happen to agree. I don't want the responsibility anyway." Ozpin took a moment to digest that before standing up and looking out the window. A moment of silence passed as she grew more nervous. The constant ticking of the clockwork above grinding on her nerves.
"Tell me who you think the replacement should be." He finally said. His gaze was still looking over Vale.
"I think it should be me." Weiss said with all the confidence she had. "I have had training, academically and physically. Jaune has none of those qualification on top of being a novice. I urge you to reconsider." She said, laying out her case. Another moment passed before the headmaster spoke again.
"Tell me, do you know why I did choose Jaune as the leader over you?" Weiss considered what she knew of Jaune, but it was ultimately little.
"No." She finally said, not seeing the reason.
"I chose him, because he had the most growth to gain from it."
"I'm already over six-foot, sir." Jaune piped up from beside her, attempting to lighten the mood. A chuckle came from the headmaster, but Weiss found the comment distasteful.
"Not actually growing, Mr. Arc, but personal growth." He turned away from the window and faced them. "Jaune Arc was chosen as the leader because he had the most potential for growth in that position. Ruby is too young for that responsibility; Blake is too unreliable for it. And you don't have anything to gain from being a leader." He directed at Weiss.
"I don't understand." She said, confused.
"Yeah, you lost me too." Jaune said, equally as baffled. The headmaster leaned on his desk and set his mug down.
"Let me ask you Weiss. What motivates you to become the leader?" He asked.
"Because it's a position I deserve and am qualified for." She said without hesitation.
"And would you grow as a person as one? Would you learn anything you don't already know? How much of a benefit would you give your teammates by being a leader?" He asked the questions. Truth be told, Weiss hadn't thought about any of that.
"I don't know…" She finally said. "I guess I would help them with their studies and training." That was the logical answer.
"But they wouldn't grow as people. Jaune, on the other hand," Ozpin pointed to the man in question. "Was willing to give up his position of power to help his teammate. Would you have done the same?" Weiss was momentarily stunned by the question. The answer she wanted to give made her uneasy. "Yang was chosen on a similar principle." He continued. "A trait all Hunters and Huntresses should have. A willingness to help those in need."
"Your time here at Beacon is to help you be the best Huntress possible. And I hate to say this to you Ms. Schnee, but I mean this in sincerity. It's not always about you." Ozpin went back to sitting in his chair after the lecture. "Anything else I can help you with?" Weiss wasn't able from shock of being told how wrong she was.
"I think that's it." Jaune said guiding her back to the elevator.
"Anytime. Have a nice day." The headmaster when back to his paperwork once more. An elevator ding sounded through the office as the pair walked inside. After the doors closed, Weiss spoke up again.
"Was I… Was I being selfish?" She asked Jaune.
"Well, did you have our team in mind or just yourself?" He countered looking in her pale eyes. The azure orbs held no malice, just patience.
"Myself, I guess. I was just so angry for not being picked." She said, frustrated with herself.
"I can understand that. I never wanted this position either. So, I guess we can both be angry at Ozpin." She chuckled at the thought. Weiss wanted to be leader but wasn't chosen, while Jaune was the opposite. There was something poetic about it. The lobby was empty as they walked back outside. "I am completely new at this." Jaune continued. "You mind if I ask you for help sometimes?"
Helping her leader with being a leader? The absurdity of it made her laugh. Maybe it was her stress finally snapping or the weight of responsibility being lifted from her shoulders, but she was oddly content about the notion. "As long as you help me be a 'better person' in Ozpin's words." Weiss responded. If she couldn't be a leader, she would be a damned good teammate.
"Deal."
This portion was hard to write. Until next time.
