I'm not dead
Dance, Dance Revolution
Blades locked in a battle of strength, one of ivory and one of bronze. Pale steel inched forward, threatening to overtake its enemy. A naïve thought, one that even its wielder knew. Shifting her weight, she deflected the strike to the side, setting the opponent off balance. Steel fell aside as she stepped forward, her shield bashed against the enemy's side, earning a grunt of pain.
But that was that he offered, his sword lashed back up towards her neck. Reversing the grip on her weapon, she blocked it. His shield came next, a weighty barrier of steel and gold. The added weight and strength of the blow forced her back, her feet dancing beneath her to stay balanced. His attacks were relentless, if simple, adding more pressure to the assault. She expected nothing less from him, it was why he made for a great sparring partner.
A bronze greave shot out, colliding with his shin. It created a momentary pause, a pause she needed. Bashing her shield against his, she used the distraction to shift her weapon. He heard the subtle clicks that came with it, know what would come next. Azure eyes narrowed in focus; she could see the split-second choices being made behind them. Pushing his shield forward, he ducked beneath it. Emerald eyes caught the blade snaking up from beneath, aimed at her stomach.
Her weapon came down from above to stop its advance, fully shifted into a rifle. Her shield was shoved towards her body in a furious charge, the firearm and blade pinned to her body. She let him carry her towards the edge of the ring before making her move. Swinging her legs back, she vaulted over his body and fired off a controlled burst of rounds into his back. From the combined shots and disappearing weight, he stumbled forward onto the ground.
"And ring out." Pyrrha called from behind him. "Seventeen to one."
"Damn, that smarts." Jaune grumbled from the concrete floor. "Did you have to shoot me in the back?"
"Take it as a sign of improvement." Pyrrha offered a hand, one he accepted. Clasping her wrist, she pulled. Jaune staggered to his feet, unsteady from the many bouts the had earlier. His metal hand grasped her shoulder, and she could feel the heat radiating off of him.
"How is that improvement?" His piercing sapphire gazed focused on hers. There was an intensity there that not many people had.
"It means that I need to be rougher with you." She smiled easily, ignoring how close he was. "After all, you did win one bout."
"You accidentally stepped outside the ring, and you know that."
"A win's a win. Learn to take it."
"I would if I could." He sighed, letting go of her.
"You're too hard on yourself, you know that?" She stated, trying to figure why he acted like he wasn't improving. Already leaps and bounds of progress had been made since he first started here, from what she had seen anyway. Even when fighting with him, she had to think about her next move and not go on autopilot like she did with so many other opponents. Even the decisiveness and strength of his strikes have improved.
"I need to be." Jaune accepted, meeting her gaze. "Can't protect anyone if I'm not strong enough."
"Then acknowledge the fact that you are improving. Just say 'hey, I'm stronger than I was yesterday'."
"You're really pushy about this."
"I am. Now say it before I take Nora's advice and break your legs." Pyrrha smiled sweetly at Jaune.
"…"
"Kindly, of course." She added.
"Fine." He sighed, looking at her in annoyance. "I'm stronger than I was yesterday. Happy now?"
"It'll do." She shrugged, glancing past Jaune to where Weiss and Yang were fighting. It could be her imagination, but her partner seemed a bit more 'off' than usual.
"Neat. What needs improvement?" Jaune drew her attention back, changing the subject. It was a constant question whenever they were done training.
"Just experience is at this point. You have the basics down, even if they are a bit rough."
"Really? That's it?" He asked. "You can't teach me how to do acrobatic flips like you do?"
"It's not that simple, Jaune." Pyrrha began to explain. "We may both use a weapon and shield, but that's where the similarities end. I can only teach you so much before you have to learn for yourself. What works for you, what doesn't. What you can do and what you can't. Do you see me trying to brawl like Yang or fence like Wiess?"
"No." He stated. "You fight differently. That's the best way I can describe it."
"Exactly. I fight the way that works best for me. The basics are good foundation to start with, but then you have to figure out what to do after that. Experiment, trial and error, fail or succeed. After that, then you can start perfect your own style. The way that only you fight. I can already see the beginnings of it already. Like my mentor always said: 'Follow the rules, break the rules, make the rules.'"
"Huh." Jaune grunted in understanding. "That sounds pretty simple."
"I assure you, it's not." She giggled at the thought. "It took me three years to fully figure it out."
"Whelp. Looks like I'm screwed."
"I'm sure you'll figure it out in no time."
"I have no idea where you get that optimism from. Either way, I should probably head back." Jaune whipped out his scroll and checked the time. "I could probably catch a nap too."
"That's not a bad idea. I never understood getting ready so early before a ball."
"You go to them often?"
"I used to. Mostly for publicity and to attract sponsors. My managers would parade me around like some fancy toy that everyone should buy."
"I… I don't even know how to approach that." Was all he offered. "Other than it sounds like they were trying to use you."
"It's one of the reasons I left Mistral and came here. Become a Huntress in Vale, away from the sponsors, fans, managers and everything else. It's nice here. So much… Quieter." She meant it. Sure, things happened, like Jaune's team and their involvement with the White Fang, but it was less stressful. It was nice to just be and not have to worry about putting up an image or trying to be something she's not.
"Well, for what it's worth, thank you." There was honesty in his voice that she was used to.
"Anytime, Jaune." She smiled back. Watching him walk away, he was quickly joined by Ruby, being done sparring with Ren, both heading back to their dorm. Pyrrha couldn't really understand why he could give praise easily but not accept it. Did he not think himself worthy? Again, it was odd. She was no stranger to being lauded over herself, annoying as it was at times, but she knew where honest improvements were made and took them to heart.
At this point, his self-depreciating attitude was becoming irritating, even for her.
Idly she wondered how his team dealt with it. Now that she actually thought about it, they probably didn't with everything else going on, further irritating her. Another saving grace for being on her team, the normalcy of it all. Something Pyrrha never thought she'd experience, but with Team Jabberwocky causing such a fuss, it was easy to fade into the background. So, with sweat clinging to her clothes and body and somewhat annoyed at it all, she headed towards the locker room for a shower.
Walking along the tiles and past the spartan room of lockers and benches, Pyrrha began to undress, putting her gear on a nearby stool outside of the shower stalls. Within no time, she had hot water running down her body. It eased her sore muscles and brought her a sense of clarity. Tonight was the dance, so she'd have to attend. All manner of students gathered from around Remnant to attend the festival and would probably be there as well to mingle.
And in truth, Pyrrha was thankful no one asked to the dance. Yes, she'd be going with her team and friends, but there was a certain freedom of being alone and beholden to no one. That still didn't escape her from the drama that was constantly happening. Believe it or not, but she used to detest it back in Mistral because it always revolved around her and her career. Who she was spending time with, all the pointless interviews, and outrageous opinions of her actions.
She hated it. Loathed it even. One of the main reasons why she left. Now though, looking at the drama happening around her, she felt like a hypocrite. Pyrrha loved hearing the hushed whispers not stop when she walked by other students. She was ecstatic when they started talking with her about the next hot piece of gossip. How Normal it felt. Yang would be the one to thank for that, fueling Beacon's rumor mill to untold heights with the upperclassmen.
Coco Adel was someone she'd never want to cross.
"Hey Pyr." Yang's voice cut through her thoughts like a dull knife. Her partner walked into the stall next to hers, only a tile barrier that came up to the height of their shoulders separating them. "How was the day's beat down?"
"It wasn't a beat down." She argued, hearing the shower knob turn next to her stall. "Jaune was more than adequate. How was your match?"
"Not bad. Weiss is getting better at infighting. Real challenge is getting close to her to start with. Her semblance is bullshit like that."
"I'm sure she'd say the same thing about yours." Pyrrha chuckled.
"Yeah, well super strength and durability doesn't do much when she's like fifty feet away."
"What was that thing you told me when we were out in Vale drinking? 'Skill Issue' was it?"
"Listen here you little shit." Yang slammed her hands onto the wall separating them and pointed an accusing finger towards her. "Just because I told you to be less polite does not mean you can throw that back at my face." Pyrrha stared back at the challenging lilac gaze, feeling the twinkle in her emerald eyes.
"Doesn't mean it's not true."
"I literally held your hair as you blew chunks in the alley."
"And I will always cherish that memory." She meant it. Never would she have thought that she'd ever be in a back alley puking while her friends both laughed and supported her.
"Strange thing to appreciate, but alright. Do I need to be worried you'll be an alcoholic later in life?"
"I don't think it's me you have to worry about." Pyrrha said, scrubbing her body free of sweat. "I remember Ren always having a drink in his hand and he seemed sober the whole night."
"Dude knows how to drink; I'll give him that." Yang went to washing her hair. "Probably does it to deal with Nora. Hell, I love the gal, but I would too."
"Yeah, good thing he's taking her to the dance…" Pyrrha paused at the statement. "Now that I think about it, he's probably doing us a favor."
"His sacrifice will be etched in stone, in memory of his heroic deed." Yang narrated. "Forever the stalwart Warden of the Norapocalypse."
"Why do you do that?"
"Dunno'." Yang shrugged. "Just fun, I guess. Reversing the wheels for a minute, you gotta' date for the dance?"
"A date? No. No one has asked me."
"Huh. And here I thought you would, Ms. Popular."
"I'm actually glad for it. I don't have to worry about pleasing anyone or keeping standards. What about you? I know you're busy with setting it up with Weiss, but do you have anyone you're going with?"
"Well… You see…" Yang looked up trying to find the right words. "Alright. I need to tell you something." The shift in tone perked Pyrrha's interest. Her partner turned to her and crossed her arms on top of the tile wall. "Partner to partner."
"Oh?" Pyrrha leaned in close, a traitorous part of her mind yelling: Gossip? Juicy!
She curb stomped the voice into the metaphorical pavement.
"Yeah. Not a word of this. To anyone, understood?" Seeing the seriousness in Yang's eyes, Pyrrha mimed zipping her lips. "Good. Now before I start, I don't want you judging me, alright?"
"No promises."
"I hate you." That was a lie. "Anyway, so remember we staked out the White Fang place with Jaune's team?"
"Yeah." Pyrrha nodded, "Hard to forget with all the screaming and giant robot."
"Good, good. And you know that me and Jaune handled the giant refrigerator after it ran." Pyrrha nodded at the statement. "And Roman trashed my bike while it happened, so the whole night obviously pissed me off."
"Understandable. Then Jaune called us. Said you were going out drinking."
"Yup." She popped the word. "Got a nice buzz going."
"Ruby filled us in on the horror stories."
"One," Yang held up a finger. "She exaggerates. Two, I am not that bad."
"Didn't you destroy a bar?"
"That was one time and we're getting off topic." Yang dismissed the accusation with a wave of the hand. "So, no shit there I was, drinking with Jaune and reflecting on what a bad day it's been. Turns out, I've been kind of a bitch lately. Had no idea."
"You're not a bitch, Yang."
"Thanks, but a bit late for that. Either way, we're talking, shooting the shit, then one thing leads to another and… well… we sort of…" Yang trailed off and Pyrrha put two and two together.
"You kissed!?" She shouted the whisper, the statement being masked by the running water and smothered by the steam.
"Worse." Yang groaned into her arms. "We fucked."
"… Oh." Was all Pyrrha could say. Sure, kissing a classmate while drinking at a bar was one thing, but outright having intercourse on the same night? "How…. How did that happen?"
"I don't know!" Yang threw her hands up in frustration. "It just seemed like a good idea at the time. I wanted to apologize, and for some fucking reason, my booze addled mind thought it would be a good idea to tease him. I kissed, we made out, it got hot, so I cashed in a favor to get us a room. Then bada bing, bada boom, I'm riding him like he owes me money." Pyrrha was fanning her face, her flushed face either from the hot shower or the story Yang was telling.
"I don't know what to say." She really didn't. The closest relationship she had ever had outside of her family was a fellow competitor in a tournament, and they barely interacted. It was just mostly fleeting glances and scroll texts. "Was…" Pyrrha swallowed, some insidious part of her mind wanted to know more. "Was it good at least?"
"Definitely great for a virgin. Then again, I was doing most of the work." Yang mused. "It was pretty intense."
"You took his virginity!?"
"I mean, most people are. Pretty sure you're one too." Yang bopped her nose with a finger.
"You don't know that."
"Yeah, you're definitely a virgin." She pinched her cheek like a parent does to a child. "My sweet little innocent Pyrrha." Pyrrha batted the hand away.
"Stop. Does that mean you guys dating now?" It was the logical conclusion.
"It's complicated." Yang shrugged. "We flirt when no one is looking and are physical when we can get away with it, but I don't know if he's ready for a relationship or not."
"Yang! You can't just lead him on like that."
"I know, but he's a mess, Pyr, and already has a lot on his plate. You've seen his team. Dude is on his last legs of sanity, and I help, you know, relieve some stress."
"You're not wrong." Pyrrha couldn't deny that. Team Jabberwocky was infamous among first years for getting themselves into trouble. "But you need to communicate that."
"I would, but something kinda' big came up recently that threw a wrench into everything."
"What?"
"Ruby likes him, Pyr. Like, romantically likes him." Yang rested her chin on her arms, slumped over the wall, defeated. "She told me yesterday while we were getting dresses."
"Oh… Oh no." A love triangle. An honest to god's love triangle happening right before her. But more importantly, it was between Ruby and Yang. She had no doubt if it was anyone else, Yang would stake a claim in her territory and in her own words 'beat a bitch'. It even made Ruby's words on the roof make more sense. She was wondering how to get Jaune's attention. "What are you going to do?"
"I don't know. This is the first time I've seen Ruby show any interest in a human being and I want her to be happy. Jaune's a good enough guy, and I trust him. They're on the same team after all, they're partners so of course they are going to be close… It makes sense for me to step back, you know? Let them have their happiness."
"It sounds like to me you're trying to rationalize it." Pyrrha voiced her thoughts.
"Shut up. I think they'd be good for each other." Yang sounded so defeated, at odds from how she usually saw her partner.
"So? What do you want?"
"I want Ruby to be happy."
"What about your happiness? Does Jaune make you happy?" She asked. Yang avoided her gaze and stared at the wall, silent. The question hanged in between them like the heavy steam in the air. "Don't you think you deserve a chance?" A snort of amusement came from Yang.
"What I deserve? That's funny." She leaned on her arm, still refusing to make eye contact. "I deserve a whole lot worse. Maybe it's some sort of karmatic justice."
"That's not a word, and are talking about when you almost died?" Yang told the team one night when they were sharing stories. How she almost got herself and Ruby killed by wondering off into the woods. To look for the mother than abandoned them. "You can't blame yourself for that. You were a child."
"Yeah? Well, I still do. I promised myself to keep Ruby safe. I failed to do that once and I won't do it again."
"Ruby can take care of herself, Yang. You've seen her fight. She's here at Beacon. She has teammates that can look after her. You don't need to keep shouldering that responsibility."
"But it is my responsibility. I took care of her, I looked after her. I watched her grow, learn, flourish into a Huntress. I read her stories to bed when dad was on mission. I cooked her meals when no one else was there… I…" Yang's sighed, dropping her head. "I wasn't there when she needed me."
"Yang…"
"She had to take a life, because that bitch decided to run away. Ruby and Jaune almost died and I just…" A fist came down onto the barrier cracking the tile. "I can't handle that. I don't what I'd do if she was just gone." The last word came out choked, muffled by her arms and the water. Pyrrha didn't know what else to do but just put a hand on her shoulder, to let her know she was still there. They stayed like that for a few minutes, her silent while Yang's breathing become more even.
A deep, rattling sigh finally escaped Yang, signaling the end of the episode. Using her arms to push herself up, she palmed her eyes. "Thanks." Yang started rubbing out the wetness on her face, wither from the shower or her own tears. "I really needed that."
"Are you going to be alright for tonight?" Pyrrha asked. She was concerned. This was the first time she'd seen her in any state of emotional distress and it was so odd.
"Yeah. I'll be fine. Just gotta' pump myself up, you know?"
"Please don't tell me you're going to shove Jaune and Ruby together."
"Someone has to. They'll be good for each other. Plenty of fish in the sea an all that." Yang said, turning off the shower. "Thanks for the talk. I just needed someone to vent to. I'll see you back at the dorm!" Pyrrha watched as she walked away, unashamed of her naked figure. Pyrrha only hoped she didn't magically wander off without her change of clothes after that little emotional snap.
Leaning her back against the wall, she sighed dejectedly while the hot water ran down her body. There was a lot to unpack there, and she didn't know where to begin. She could already tell that Yang didn't want to put Jaune and Ruby together but felt it was her duty to do so. Like a burden shoved onto her. Pyrrha could empathize with that at least. Not wanting to do the 'right' thing but having to do it anyways.
And she sounded sad about it. Genuinely sad. It didn't sit right with her. Maybe it was the outside looking in, but she wished someone could've helped her when she was drowning in the fame and expectations. Yang already helped her break out of that shell, making actual friends because of it. Maybe Yang needs a little push, just like she did.
After all, what are partners for?
"Gods, how do you work this thing?" Jaune fiddled with the sky-blue tie. The damned thing was Weiss's idea, saying it brought the outfit together. He was clad in a black button-up shirt and black pants, with his grey waist coat hanging on his bedpost with his also black blazer. Weiss said it was better than white, saying it made his eyes pop or something like that.
Honestly, he didn't understand it.
"Having trouble?" Ren asked from the other side of the room. They were in team YPLN dorm, effectively kicked out of his own room while the girls got ready. Not that he minded. He was used to his sisters shoving him this way and that whenever they were going out. Jaune was practically a pro at it. Thing was, the dance was just about to start according to his scroll and they still haven't come out.
"I always had Violet or Aubrey do this for me." Jaune complained, fiddling with the damned cloth before giving up, letting it hang limply around his neck.
"Your sisters?" Ren asked, quirking an eyebrow.
"Yeah. Count yourself lucky you don't have one." Jaune sat himself on a bed and looked at his only male friend.
"A sister or a tie?" Ren smirked.
"Tie, smartass. Did Nora pick that out for you?" Jaune gestured to the outfit. A pink button-up with dark green pants and coat.
"Yes." He sighed, leaning on a bedpost. "Very adamant about it, but who am I to argue? At least it doesn't look bad."
"You look like a watermelon."
"Nora loves watermelons."
"Oh, neat." The conversation fell of there, a silence taking over the room. I would've stayed that way if he didn't hear the commotion coming from his dorm room. Even through two walls, Jaune and Ren could still hear the loud voices going back and forth across the hall.
"They certainly are loud." Ren observed.
"Yep." Jaune sighed, getting off the bed. "I should probably see what's up. Hopefully Weiss isn't chewing someone out."
"You have fun with that, I'll be here when you get thrown out."
"Ha ha." Jaune mocked, exiting the room. The voices were clearer now, and he could make out Blake's tone through the walls. Gods, he hoped she and Weiss weren't fighting again. Rapping his metal knuckles on the door, he yelled over the commotion. "Hey guys!" Jaune started. "The hell is going on in there?" He was answered by more crashing, yelling, and what could only be described as a dying animal's screech.
The door was slowly open by Pyrrha, clad in her dark red dress she picked out yesterday. She was stunning in it and had to shake himself back to reality to keep from staring. Behind her was Blake, dolled up in her violent dress, and flailing in Kali's arms. Jaune could only stare as the mother fussed at how adorable she was. Nora was taking video evidence of the occasion while Weiss stood off to the side, smirking.
"Oh, you're so cute!" Kali cooed, holding her daughter tight.
"Mom, stop! I'm not eight anymore!" Blake struggled, but to no avail.
"You'll always be my little kitten. And I have so much time to make up!"
"No! Nora, stop recording!"
"But this is a once in a lifetime viewing of the Belladonna family! I can't miss this!" Nora defended. Kali squished her face against Blake's for the camera, his teammate's golden eyes meeting his.
"Utter a word of this to anyone, and I'll flay the skin from your bones." Blake tried to intimidate him but failed from how prominent her blush was.
"I wouldn't worry about him, Kitten." Weiss taunted, earning a glare from her partner. "Nora, can you send me this? It's excellent blackmail."
"Sure thing!"
"Well, that explains a few things." Jaune thought out loud, before realizing there were two members missing. "Where's Ruby and Yang?"
"Yang went ahead to the ball to host." Weiss explained, snapping a picture from her scroll. "Allowing me to see Blake all embarrassed. Who's a cute little kitten?" The heiress started antagonizing Blake with a baby voice. "Is it you? Is it you?"
"I will murder you." Blake seethed from her mother's vice like grip. Another snap for the camera.
"Yes, you are!" Starring at the duo, Jaune mentally filed away whether this counted as team bonding or psychological torture. Questions for another day.
"And Ruby?" He asked.
"I'm in here!" Ruby's voice came through the bathroom door.
"She's been in there for ten minutes." Weiss commented, rolling her eyes and walking towards the bathroom door. "You look fine, Ruby! I picked out that dress for a reason!"
"This feels weird!"
"You wear a corset as part of your gear, of course it feels weird. Now, no more dilly dallying and get out here!" The heiress glanced at him only to do a double take and narrow her eyes at him. "Why is your tie not on?"
"It's on." He said, holding one limp end around his neck. "Just not…" Weiss's piercing gaze made him wither and realize his foot was in his mouth. "Ready?"
"Damn right, you're not." She said, batting his hand away and taking the cloth in her small hands. "I swear, you're incompetent at the oddest things." He held still for her.
"My sisters always did it for me, alright?"
"Mhm. More like made it easy for you."
"That's rich coming from you." He shot back.
"That's because I am rich." Weiss emphasized the point by tightening the fabric to where it choked him, forcing him to crouch down to her level. Her amused piercing eyes were locked onto his. "And don't forget it." Releasing him, he reeled back rubbing his neck.
"Got it." He coughed, loosening the tie.
"Good." The heiress patted his chest for emphasis. "Ruby, will you please come out?"
"Don't laugh, okay?" Ruby said. "These shoes are so awkward."
"Heels." Weiss corrected.
"We promise we won't laugh." Jaune assured her. "I'm sure you look fine."
"Alright." Slowly the bathroom door opened, revealing Ruby Rose. A sleeveless black dress hung on her shoulders, coming down to her knees. Tied around her waist was a red sash and a strange looking pattern adorned her torso that made it almost see through. Jaune also notice that she seemed to be a few inches taller, coming up to his chin. "Is… Is it bad?" Ruby nervously fidgeted, looking up at him, her mascara lining her eyes giving her a more mature appearance. And those orbs, silver and sparkling…
Full of life again.
"Beautiful." He uttered before his brain could catch up with his mouth. Swallowing, he licked his parched lips.
Why the hell was his throat dry?
"Wha- wha- what?" Ruby stuttered, her face turning crimson and eyes widening. Double down, Jaune. This is Ruby's first dance, don't shoot down that confidence.
"Beautiful." He said again. "Like how Weiss looks beautiful in her dress. Or Pyrrha or Nora. Even Blake."
"Why the hell did you say it like that?" Blake interrupted him.
"Because you're acting very unladylike over there." Weiss came to his rescue. "And don't worry about it, you'll get more compliments from Sun later."
"Oh?" Kali's attention was captured. "Who's this 'Sun' character?"
"Oh gods no." Blake's eyes pleaded with Weiss. "Please. Don't."
"Well, Sun is such a handsome young man." The heiress sensing blood in the water, strolled over to Kali, leaving the two partners somewhat alone. "And was so sincere to Blake."
"No, no, no, no, no." Was all their teammate could mumble, trying to block out the impending doom as more details spilled from Weiss's lips.
"Heh." The soft giggle brought his attention back to Ruby, who was twirling a lock of hair between her fingers and lost in thought. She was still blushing, probably from embarrassment from being called beautiful. Just like how his mom and sisters kept calling him handsome. He knew it was a lie, but at least it gave him some confidence. "… Beautiful…"
"You doing alright?" He asked. The question shocked the girl from her daze, completely changing her behavior.
"Yep! Just fine! Totally fine. Really fine, heh, heh… Yeah." Ruby refused to meet his gaze, looking everywhere but his face. "You, um… Don't look bad either."
"Thanks." Jaune said, looking down at his outfit. "Weiss knows what she's doing."
"Damn right she does…"
"What?"
"Nothing! We should get going!" Ruby darted past him and clumsily opened the door. "Getting kind of hot in here, am I right?" She laughed nervously.
"I suppose." Weiss said, leading the way with Blake and Kali in tow.
"I'll get Renny! Don't wait up for us." Nora bounded out next, followed by Pyrrha. The spartan hovered with a pensive look for a moment before walking out.
"I didn't think you'd be this eager." Jaune said, walking out with Ruby. Not to sound bad or anything but his partner preferred to steer clear of crowds and spend her time with either her weapon, their team, fixated on some project, or by herself. As far as he knew, she never showed interest in dresses or dancing.
"Well… It's just… You know…" She gestured wildly with her hands. "Everyone else is going, so like, why not, right?"
"That's true. It'd probably feel awkward being the only one not going, right?" Sure, Ruby was an awkward dork at times, but that didn't mean she liked being awkward, a sentiment he shared.
"Exactly! Not normal! Normal girls go to dances."
"I don't know…" Jaune mused. "Nora's going and she's definitely not normal."
"She's extra-normal." Ruby said. "So normal she seems abnormal."
"That doesn't make sense."
"I read it in a comic once. It's called super sanity or something like that. It makes them seem crazy but they're actually really logical."
"How does that even work?" It didn't make sense. So sane you become insane?
"Dunno'." Ruby shrugged her bare shoulders. "It was a comic."
More idle chatter from the group filled the silence before nearing the ballroom. Sounds of celebration filtered through the halls, echoing the dull roar. It wasn't long before the found themselves before the entrance of the dance hall. Students from across Remnant were dressed to impress. Clothing, dresses, and uniforms all mingled together, creating a myriad of colors on the dance floor and balconies. Laughter, yelling, and lively conversation followed, but all of that was dull and dim compared to the sight before him.
"Hey guys! I was wondering when you would get here." Yang Xiao-Long stood before them, welcoming them into the ballroom. Sapphire eyes were glued to her athletic form, wrapped in a midnight black dress that came from her neck all the way down to her shins. It hugged her frame, showing every toned curve of her waist, breasts, and hips. The only skin he could see was her bare arms and the open diamond window on her chest, revealing only a hint of her cleavage.
Her golden was radiant, cascading down her back. The light touch of makeup making Yang look more… Well, Yang.
Jaune was stunned by her.
"Um, Jaune?" A finger poked his cheek, breaking him out of his stupor. The digit belonged to Ruby, looking up at him in concern. "You're gaping like a fish, you know."
"Ah, sorry." Rubbing the back of his neck, he mentally kicked himself for being so easily stunned. The others went off their own separate ways apparently, leaving him to look like an idiot. Yang was giving him a knowing smirk when he glanced back at her. At least Ruby was on his side. "Just a lot of people here." He lied.
"I know! I've never seen so many people here before. Do we go dance first? Or do we get food or a table?"
"That can wait." Yang interjected, strolling up to her younger sister and enveloping her into a bone crushing hug. "Look at you! So mature and beautiful!" She swung a visibly flustered Ruby around.
"Yaaaaaang!" The reaper protested in her arms.
"Oh, fine." Yang released her. "Weiss really did work some magic on you, turning such a lovable dork into a lady. You're even wearing heels!"
"These things are deathtraps, and I've always been a lady, thank you very much." Ruby crossed her arms and nodded her head.
"Ladies don't swoon over their weapons."
"Crescent Rose is a handsome young man, and you know it." Ruby argued. A snort escaped yang as she ruffled her younger sister's hair.
"Never change, Rubes. Why don't you grab us a table before there's none left?"
"Sure can!" And like that, Ruby was off darting around the ballroom, leaving Yang and him by themselves. An awkward silence hung around them as lights and music danced between them.
"Hey." He mentally kicked himself.
"Hey yourself." Yang said, amused. Strolling up to him, her hands came up to his chest, smoothing out the wrinkles. He would've noticed if the intoxicating smell of berries and the way her outfit hugged her cleavage didn't make his brain short circuit. "I gotta' admit, you do know how to clean up, Lover Boy." She purred, letting her idle hands fidget with his tie.
"Yeah, well…" His eyes darted back up to hers, the amethyst orbs alight with delight. "You look stunning." The words were choked out, on account how his mouth felt like there was cotton wedged down his windpipe. Gods, he was thirsty.
"That was the point." She tugged on his tie, bringing their faces closer. Realization dawned on him, finally realizing what ties were actually for. Not for looking nice at work, or impressing bosses that would never listen, but to give the women a leash! "And it was very entertaining watching you flounder." Her hot strawberry breath was on his lips.
"What can I say?" Deciding to double down and trying to get some control back. "You're as radiant as the sun."
Laying it on thick there.
A blonde eyebrow quirked. "Oh? Is that it?" Unexpected but at least it was working. Come on Jaune, use that messed up brain of yours.
"There's more to it, but that would involve taking off your dress." He squeaked. Yang and he stood stone still at the remark, a look of shock on her beautiful face. Fuck, he forgot to use his filter. Damned hormones win again.
"Did… Did you just threaten to rip my clothes off?"
"It was more a of a suggestion now that I think about it." Backpedal. BACKPEDAL.
"Oh, you little…" She hissed, dragging him closer until her whispers were in his ear. "There is a dance going on, that I need to host. That means I am more or less occupied for the night, if little miss Ice Queen doesn't get her head out of her ass and start helping." She growled, letting the words sink in. "That means I have a little mission for you. I need you to make sure Ruby has the best night of her life. This is the first time she's ever come to a dance, and I will NOT have anyone, or anything, fuck that up."
A stray hand trailed from his chest down to his belt, bypassing the boundary before the hand gripped the sacred Arc jewels. "Capiche?" Yang asked, holding his family lineage hostage.
"Yup." He croaked out, nodding his head frantically. "Ruby. Great night. Pain otherwise."
"I knew you'd understand." She let go of him but still kept a hold on the tie. "You're dependable like that."
"Odd way of showing it."
"I'm just being thorough. I know you're not like most guys, but I have to be sure." Ouch, but his pride has taken worse beatings. Yang planted a chaste kiss on his cheek before letting him go. A soft, almost motherly, smile graced her lips as she inspected him. "Now go show Ruby a night to remember." Yang began pushing him away, towards the dance floor. Jaune stumbled at first, but caught his feet, navigating his way towards his partner. Something felt off though, something strange from the way Yang looked at him.
Why did her eyes look so sad?
Alright, Ruby, you got this.
Table? Claimed.
Drinks? Tactically acquired.
Music? Oddly tasteful.
Outfit? Jaune's face popped into her head, openly gazing at her, wide-eyed. Beautiful.
The reaper was now truly crimson, the heat traveling up her neck and face, the memory crystalizing itself in her mind. All she could was wait and fidget while waiting for Jaune to find her. In hindsight, she should've made a signal or something. Like how Ren and Nora find each other with sloth calls. Weird, but cute and can come in handy when they get separated. They should have one too. Good partners have those.
"Something on your mind, dear?" Kali asked, the only other occupant at the table.
"Just um…" Ruby glanced around, making sure Jaune wasn't in earshot. "I'm really freaking nervous right now."
"Nervous about Jaune?" And there she goes with her pinpoint mother senses. How do they always know? HOW?
"…. Maybe? What do I do? I have punch, a table, an outfit. What's next? Do we dance? Talk? How do you do small talk? Do we talk about weather or something or the politics of Remnant? I slept through Oobleck's classes! How do I talk about politics when I have a C!? What if he changes his mind? What if he finds someon-" Kali's hand placed itself on to hers, momentary silencing the anxious tirade. She was embarrassing herself, wasn't she?
"You're going to be just fine." She assured her with that motherly voice Ruby hadn't heard in so long. "Just be yourself, and don't think too hard, alright?"
"But... What if I do something wrong?" No matter how she thought, her anxiety still gnawed at the back of her mind. What if, what if, what if? It didn't stop. Goodwtich said it was just her mind trying to protect itself, trying to come up with the best possible option, trying not to fail again. It was important for her not to be paralyzed by indecision but was easier said than done when a million possibilities were staring you down.
"Then it happens." Kali shrugged, as if it were nothing. "Try again. Just remember to enjoy yourself. What I'd give to be young and reckless again, so full of life." The mother's tone became whimsical, seeming to remember better times. "So don't squander your youth thinking about how bad it could be. Live a little! You might enjoy it."
"You're starting to sound like Yang…"
"Then she must be on to something, because did you see her in that dress? Sweet Dust, could she turn heads." Ruby could only nod in agreement. Her sister did look beautiful. Beautiful enough to leave Jaune stunned. She wasn't an idiot. She knew who Jaune was really looking at and tried to cover it up. And who could blame him? When comparing herself to Yang, there was no competition. She was a better fighter, more mature, womanlier. Yang was just…
Better.
And it hurt knowing there wasn't anything she could do.
A painful flick to her forehead brought her back to reality. "Ow!" Ruby rubbed her skull, glaring at Kali. "What was that for?"
"That was to get you out of your own head." Kali said, fixing her a stern gaze. "It can be an awful place sometimes and this is no place to be thinking. Dances are for doing." Her amber eyes flicked to behind Ruby. "And speaking of, I think your date's finally here." Ruby's eyes widened at the news and whirled around in her chair.
"Sorry for making you wait." Jaune said, taking the seat beside her. "Yang was giving me the sister talk… I think."
"Sister talk…" Ruby groaned before slumping on the table. "Did she threaten you?" Jaune's nervous laugh didn't help. Her head hit the table in embarrassment. "Damnit Yang."
"It wasn't that bad."
"You say that, but I've lived with her. Whatever you think it is, it's ten times worse."
"Well, you kids have fun." Kali interrupted, standing from the table. "I just spotted a nice piece of entertainment trying to avoid me. Toodles!" Kalie strolled off in a hurry toward one of the staircases leading to the second floor. "Oh, James! Don't you hide from me!"
"James?" Jaune wondered out loud. "You know who she's talking about?"
Ruby shrugged; face still planted in the cloth. "No idea." Her words were muffled, and night ruined… Or was it? Kali's words and Goodwitch's wisdom struck a chord with her. Jaune was here, albeit threatened by her terror of a sister, but still here. And here she was, moping. Didn't she like him? She did, whether it be a crush, or by the divine blessing of the Gods, something more. So why in all that was mechanical and oily, acting like this?
No! She is Ruby Rose damnit. And she will not let this chance just go by.
"Jaune!" Ruby's voice squeaked and her chair scrapped back as she stood up.
"Yeah?" He asked with those stupid mesmerizing eyes.
"We are going to dance." It was a fact. They were at a ball the Beacon was hosting, and by the gods above, they will.
"Alright." Jaune stood up next her, fixing his tie. They were about to leave before he stopped her.
"What?" Why was he stalling? She had nerve to work up for this, she didn't need it to falter now! The rest of her thoughts fizzled out of her mind as Jaune bowed and offered her a metal hand.
"Would you care to dance?" He asked, giving her that lopsided grin. Ruby, for all her bluster and enthusiasm, was stunned. Silver eyes starred down the outstretched palm like it was an Ursa, waiting tear her limb off. It was just like in those fairy tales she read as a kid. Ruby always thought that she'd by the shinning knight whisking someone away, fighting the evil of the world. Never the damsel, or the defenseless.
But maybe it wouldn't be so bad… Jaune was weak at first, right?
Gingerly, she took his hand. It dwarfed hers, the warm metal oddly soothing to the touch. She idly thought if this would be different if he never lost his arm, whether she'd still like him. Maybe. But then he wouldn't have learned a lesson that day, how easily life can be lost in this cruel world. Like her mother lost to the world, like her own hands were stained with blood. And as her calloused hands rubbed the metal knuckles, Ruby knew she wouldn't change anything about them.
That thought spurned her onwards.
Letting him take the lead, they wandered onto the main floor, pass the other students swaying, dancing, and otherwise moving with the rhythm of the music. The melody was modern, loud, and fast paced. Jaune stopped them near the center of the throng, turning to face her. Releasing her hand, Jaune started dancing. And not just that regular awkward dancing she expected either, but actual, honest to gods, dancing.
The way his shoulders popped, his footwork danced around and his hypnotizing hips. It wasn't fair. HOW? How is he such a good dancer? This was supposed to be two dorks awkwardly shuffling, not him moving around her like some ninja incubus!
…
She may have to stop reading Blake's books to go to sleep.
The buzz of thoughts were interrupted when Jaune suddenly leaned in, his breath brushing across her ear. He said something, but all Ruby could focus on was the subtle scent of spice, synthetic oil, sweat, and heat coming from him. The combinations made her heart and stomach do funny things.
"What?" She asked in return, his blonde shaggy hair tickling her nose.
"I said it's weird if I'm the only one dancing." Oh yeah… That might be an issue.
"I don't know how to dance!" And by the cruel fates of the Gods above, she shouted out that little tidbit of information right as the song ended. Mortification creeped up her body as the students around her turned to stare. She shrunk in on herself, embarrassed giggles escaping her mouth. Thankfully another song started up, taking the attention away from her.
"Really?" Jaune asked, letting her realize she was looking like an idiot in front of her partner.
"Y-Yeah. Never really tried it or had time to do it. Well, I actually did have time, but Video games just seemed so much more fun, you know? And Crescent Rose needed so much maintenance…" Ruby couldn't stop her treacherous mouth from rambling excuse about why she couldn't dance. "And… Yeah, I can't dance." She finished the long-winded explanation and hoped she didn't completely screw up her chances.
"Huh." Jaune grunted, studying her. Ruby looked up, trying to figure what was going on in his head. She knew he'd be okay with it; they'd been through a lot already as first years, but what if it was too weird? A girl not knowing how to dance? What guy would go out with someone like that? Some girl who was into high caliber ballistics and weapons more than looking pretty and being normal… No one that's who. "Why didn't you just say so?"
"It's… Embar- What are you doing?" Jaune gently placed his metal hand on the small of her back and guided her closer to himself.
"Just trust me, alright?" He said. "Put your hand on my shoulder." Ruby reached up with her left hand.
"Like this?"
"No, your other hand." Switching hands and mentally chewing herself out, Ruby settled her right hand on his shoulder. "Good. Now place your other hand in mine." She did, allowing her to feel the rough callouses on his own, the marks of good training. "Alright, now follow my lead. One," He stepped to the side and she followed. "Two, three, four." The words kept repeating themselves giving her something to focus on while she starred at their feet.
It was so simple now that they were in time with the slow melodic tempo that fell over the ballroom. Ruby always had good footwork, but the heels she was in made it difficult. Thankfully, Jaune was there to keep her steady. "There you go." Jaune said, bringer her eyes back up to him. "You're a natural."
"Oh…" Ruby realized just how close they were. Scant inches separated their bodies, and barely any more between their faces. Yes, he was tall, broad, and from what she'd seen and felt, far more built than the beginning of the year. And that warm smile and eyes like clear scopes, it was just so comforting. "You think so?" She said, blaming the heat she was feeling on all the other people around them.
"Yeah." He chuckled softly, looking over her head at something, the song lulling them into an easy rhythm. "My sisters would usually end up stomping on my feet."
"Is that how you know how dance? From your sisters?" She asked. Jaune did have a lot, and probably suffered as much pain and embarrassment as she did.
"Yup." He turned them around with the beat. "Some of them attended dance classes and when they were home, they'd use me as a practice dummy. Sucked sometimes, because I'd be playing games or minding my own business and they'd just barge in and start dragging me around the house. I had to be good for the sake of not walking with maimed feet."
"That sounds so…" Ruby tried to place the words. She never really had a lively household like that, always having family around. It just sounded so… Nice.
"Awful?" Jaune supplied, missing the point. "Trust me, I know. I couldn't even get some time for myself sometimes. Being pulled left right and center for something."
"I was going to say nice." Ruby voiced her thoughts, peering up at him. "Always having someone around."
"Oh yeah…" Jaune said, regret lacing his tone. "Shit, I forgot. Sorry, I didn't mean…"
"It's alright." Ruby assured him, leaning on his chest. Everyone one around them looked as intimidate as they were, swinging slowly to the music. Warmth and the subtle spice his scent soothed her. "I know it wasn't the best childhood. Yang always did her best though, but she was still only two years older. Dad stayed with us as often as he could, but between hunting and teaching at Signal, it still wasn't much. There are even some days I can't remember mom's face."
"Qrow came around whenever he could." She continued, feeling unusually vulnerable. "But there were times where it was just me alone in the house. I didn't really get along with many kids my age, I was just too… weird. Too different. I played games, tinkered, read comics, and thought and thought and thought. After a while, I was content with that. All I needed was Yang and Dad and Qrow… But I always wondered what it would be like… To have a real family."
Jaune hummed in understanding, the rumble of his chest feeling like a lullaby. He let his arms fall and link around her back, his chin resting atop her head. It felt like she had the best smelling weighted blanket wrapped around her. "I think you do." He spoke.
Ruby linked her own arms around him, pulling his warm body closer. "What do you mean?"
"Well… I don't think it's a stretch to say this, but we care about you. Me, Weiss, Blake, and your sister's team too. We hang out together or do our own thing and nobody really minds. We have each other's back in case things go wrong, and you know that. So what if you don't have a complete family? We'll just still be there if you need us."
Ruby's arms squeezed tighter around him. "Do you really mean that?" It was a wonderful sentiment, but she needed to be sure.
"Well, yeah. Sure, Blake may be flighty, and Weiss is sometimes a brat, but we'll be there for you."
A quiet snort escaped her. "I wonder how we all get along."
"I guess we're just too stubborn to give up on one another, I guess. Like family." He added. It may have been childish, but she couldn't help the tears that threaten to well up from her eyes. She rubbed her face into his shirt, willing herself to stop.
"Thank you." Her gratitude was muffled into the wet fabric. The ending of the song gave her a chance to collect herself, pulling away from him. "I-" Ruby had to rub the palm of her hands against her eyes to get it to stop. She wasn't a kid! She didn't need to cry. "I'm going to go get a… A thing." The excuse was lame, but it would do. Making sure he didn't see her face, she ducked and weaved through the crowd.
It was a lot. She knew it they were like a pseudo family of sorts, but to hear it said so casually made it feel real. Fresh air welcomed Ruby, her feet guiding her to a balcony. The cool breeze gave her some clarity, the sight of the rest of Beacon below her, sprawling over the cliffside. The CCTS tower blinking away next to the academy with its glowing red lights. Ruby breathed deeply to center herself and try and calm her mind.
Only now did she realize that she cried, ran away from Jaune, and left him on the dancefloor. A regretful sigh escaped her lips, hands gripping the edge. Of course, she had to ruin it. Jaune probably thought he did something wrong, didn't he? Well, it technically was, but not in a bad way that usually made girls cry. At least she thought so. Staring out into the distance, Ruby racked her brain to find a way to make it up to him.
Comics? It wouldn't be hard to buy some from Vale. Maybe Grimm Hunter 6 for the console? That would be cool. They'd be able to play in the dorm and goof around during the upcoming break. Now that sounded fun. Ruby's musings were cut short when movement along one of the buildings below her caught her eye. A shadow running atop the roof of an office building, heading towards the CCT.
Silver eyes widened. Oh no… Not now, please not now. Ruby's sense of duty started kicking in, something she was starting to hate. The urge to meddle, investigate, or just to know was so strong in her, she had to mentally restrain herself. Alright, there's someone heading towards a very important comm relay for Vale under the cover of night… Probably not for good intentions… Crap.
Needing to intervene, she looked around her immediate area, trying to find someone that could help. Not going in alone and unprepared this time, no sir.
The red hair of a certain celebrity caught her eye. One that seemed to be surrounded by a group of exchange students.
"Pyrrha!" Ruby wasted no time in catching her attention, jumping up and waving her hands wildly behind them. "Psst, Pyrrha!" Pyrrha, along with the crowd, turned toward her, mixed expressions of confusion and annoyance. "…. Hey…." She laughed nervously at the stares. "Can I borrow her for a second?" A student with a weird Mistalian garb looked down on her.
"Who d-"
"That shouldn't be a problem." Pyrrha interrupted the boy, flashing a smile and stepping past them. "Please, don't wait for us." The spartan guided her away from the crowd, unaware of the dirty looks being shot at her.
"Was I interrupting something?" Ruby asked after they neared a lonely pillar.
"Yes." Pyrrha gave a content sigh. "And I'm grateful for it. I didn't think my Fanclub from Mistral would follow me here. They can be quite… annoying." Distaste flashed across her features.
"Oh… That sucks." Ruby didn't know the feeling. Usually, she was the one that was being annoying. "Anyway, there was this person, guy, or something going towards the CCT on the roofs! All shrouded in darkness and definitely suspicious. I feel like I should go but I don't think it would be a good idea to go alone. Then I thought, 'hey, why not grab a renowned champion or something?'" Ruby was explaining on the fly but felt it was mostly accurate.
The look that came across Pyrrha's face was one of concern. "That does sound concerning… Where's Jaune? Wasn't he your date?"
"Ah…" Ruby's face felt a lot hotter than normal. "Well… I needed some air after dancing, getting stuffy and all… Heh." She laughed nervously while Pyrrha raised an eyebrow. "Besides, he's probably busy right now." As if on cue, Jaune's form broke through the sea of people. He was followed by his current dance partner, the shorter dark haired mute girl from the other team swinging him around like a ragdoll. For a moment, his eyes caught Ruby's, panicked and pleading.
"Help!" Jaune's words barely registered over the noise of the ballroom before being pulled back into the crowd. Ruby would have to thank her shorter-than-her friend later. Though, it didn't help that little ugly feeling in her chest.
"He does look occupied." Pyrrha observed.
"So, can we? Please?" She begged. She had to do this, whether or not someone came with her. Her sense of morality wouldn't let it be any other way. A thoughtful look came across the champion's face as she stared into the crowd.
"I think…" Her words were slow, emerald eyes searching for something across the room. A small smile broke upon her face. "I think it's behooved of us to see if anything is amiss. After all, it's just a short walk."
"Yes!" Ruby grabbed her hand and led her off in a rush. "Come on, we have a villain to thwart!" In the back of her mind, though, there were the cynical thoughts, whispering to her that she was being an idiot and she'll just screw up again. Willing them to shut up and boxing them into a corner, Ruby continued on, hoping that it'll be different.
That she'd be a hero.
Yang drank greedily from the punch bowl, noting the subtle hint of alcohol still lingering. Looks like her plan to spike the punch worked, something that she was able to sneak past that ruthless ice queen. She couldn't be too mean though, Weiss and Blake came over halfway through and told her to enjoy herself. Well, if those two wanted to play responsible, she wouldn't mind letting loose for a bit.
Honestly, she needed it. Seeing Jaune dancing happily with Ruby did terrible things to her heart. It was cute in a bittersweet kind of way. And damn, could she see that Ruby was falling hard for him, the way they slow danced together, looking like a lovey dovey couple…
It should've been me.
Nope. She needed more punch to drown out that voice. Ruby was happy with him and that's all that mattered. It wouldn't be a problem to find someone else. Plenty fish in the sea and Beacon would be jam packed for the next couple of weeks. And she knew she was drawing looks from the crowd with her form fitting dress, hugging her waist, hips, and bust at the right angles. All she had to do was wait.
"Hey there, beautiful." And like that, Yang had her first catch. She turned to the voice, seeing a student with dark skin and boxed shades in a tasteful Atlas suit.
"Hey yourself." She said back leaning against the table.
"The name's Coal. Flynt Coal." His brown eyes twinkled with confidence as he took of his fedora and bowed. "And it's not often someone as stunning as you to be alone tonight. May I ask for your name?"
Oh, he's certainly a smooth one.
"Mine is Xiao-Long. Yang Xiao-long." She threw his greeting back at him, earning Yang a smile. "And maybe you could change that."
"I would love to." Setting the drink down, he took her offered hand. Flynt led them to the dancefloor, weaving their way through the crowd until the found an open spot. Yang couldn't stop her eyes from darting around the room, looking for Ruby and Jaune. Their feet danced to the tempo, her body moving automatically. Her dance partner said something, bring Yang's attention back.
"What?"
"Who stood you up?" He asked again, twirling her away before bringer her back.
"No one." She said. "I came here alone."
"You're dress says otherwise."
Yang's eyes narrowed. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"Sweetheart, not to-"
"Don't call me sweetheart."
"Ahem. What I'm saying is that no girl in her right mind would dress up like you did unless it was for a special somebody."
"Really now?" Yang looked over his shoulder, still not seeing the duo. Where are they? "Maybe I just wanted to turn heads, ever thought about that?"
"Crossed my mind, but there's another reason why I think you're looking for someone else."
"And what would that be?" I can't find them anywhere… Did they sneak off? A hammer of panic dropped in the back of her mind. Ruby was too young for anything like that!
"You're distracted." Flynt said, abruptly stopping them. It snapped her from her thoughts.
"I…" Yang looked at him finally, seeing not anger, nor resentment, but understanding. "I'm sorry. I'm not being a good dance partner."
"It's cool. I just wanted to see if I had a chance is all."
"Sorry, maybe another time." Yang said, stepping away from him.
He tipped his fedora towards her. "I'll hold you to that."
She left him in search of her sister and would-be boyfriend. Now that she did think about it, Jaune wouldn't be one to rush into things like that. Or so she believed. What they did was very spur of the moment, and Yang needed to burn some stress. Different situations and all that. Circling the edge of the crowd, Yang watched as the couples on the dancefloor started seeming more intimate. Realizing now that yes, this was a very different situation.
It was far more Romantic than the bar.
Yeah. Not good. Definitely not good. Her lilac eyes scanned the crowd looking for tall blonde unkempt hair. Seeing nothing that quite resembled him on the dancefloor, she turned her eyes to the surround walls and tables. Wallflowers here and there, conversing and otherwise staying minding their own business. Still no sign of them.
"What the fuck guys?" Yang whispered to herself, maternal panic starting to set in. "Where in the brother god's name are you?"
"Damn. What the hell was her problem?" A familiar voice spoke from behind her. She whirled around to see Jaune without his suit jacket and loosening his tie. He would've looked sexy to her if there wasn't a prominent mark of lipstick on the side of his neck.
"Jaune…" She seethed, a bit of anger leaking through as her brain worked through the possibilities.
"Oh, hey Yang." The idiot finally noticed her. "What's… Why are you angry?" He tried to take a step back, but she followed.
"Where's Ruby?" Her teeth clenched as she closed the distance between them, maternal instincts stoking her rage. Jaune had the decency of mind to look frightened.
"Um…."
"She can make arrows!?" Ruby dodged the projectile as it whizzed past her and imbedded itself into the wall.
"It's got to be her semblance!" sidestepped the blade thrust to her center and parried the following strike. Pyrrha kicked out only for the masked assailant to twirl around her heel and back hand her. Ruby charged in with a drop kick, hoping to gain some breathing room. She'd use her scythe if they weren't a cramped hallway inside of a building. Melee was too cumbersome, and if she used her rifle, the concussive pressure would probably blow out her ear drums.
50. BMG tends to do that in enclosed spaces.
The black clothed figure backflipped away from them, dodging her while delivering a blow to Pyrrha's chin, bring the champion to a knee. It must've been muscle memory or maybe petty anger, but Ruby saw Pyrrha shift her weapon into its rifle form and take aim. Now, Ruby knew her friend's weapons inside and out, it's just what she did. Like how Blake used .45 ACP, or how Nora grenades were 25mm HE.
Even Pyrrha's 30-06. Chambered rifle…
"Pyr, no!" She yelled, but it was too late. The amazon pulled the trigger.
"AAAAHHHHHHHH!" Her scream was silent as she rolled onto the tile floor, clutching her ears in pain as the all-encompassing ringing shook her world.
The only consolation was that she wasn't alone in her suffering.
"I… I don't know." Jaune gulped, trying to shrink away from her.
"And why, pray tell, do you not?" Her hand snapped out to grab his collar so he couldn't escape.
"Okay, this is going to sound bad, but I may have made her cry." Yang could feel her eyes turn red, her other hand grabbing the other side of his shirt and pulling him closer. They were nose to nose as she glared into his ocean deep eyes.
"Explain."
"Right. So, we were dancing and talking about stuff and ended talking about our families and she said something about not really having a complete one and I may have said something about us being a family. Might've hit a nerve with that one because I don't really remember what I said, only that Ruby said she needed some air after that and I think she had tears, I don't know, it was dark and flashing lights with the music and everything."
"Then Mint grabbed me to cash in a favor and I really couldn't say no because that would kind of be a dick move on my part and she thought it would be really funny to swing me around like a toy around the ballroom. I caught a glimpse of Ruby with Pyrrha, and they looked alright before she pulled me back in. Then she led met to one of those weird, secluded closets right outside here and tried making out with me. Really not a fan of being suddenly jumped on and having a tongue jammed down my throat."
"Tried to get her off me but she was really possessive, and I think she was trying to mark me? Does that make sense? It made sense in my head. I saw and chance when she was trying to chew on my collarbone to make a run for it. She grabbed my jacket and I thought to myself 'why I am running from this freaky woman?' then I thought of you and, well, I thanked the jacket for its sacrifice and that it will be remembered."
Yang… was at a loss for words. Her brain slowly digesting the rambling that Jaune Arc just told her. How that Ruby may have been cry tears of joy instead of sadness. And the marking on his neck were from another woman trying to stake a claim at Jaune…
Yang's Jaune…
Who then refused them… For her…
"Are… Are you still angry?" He asked, still in her clutches.
"…. Yes." She seethed. Oh, Yang was angry. Very angry that someone else was trying to take him. She set this up so Ruby could have her shot, her slice of happiness, not for some fucking lonely bitch to literally sink her teeth into him. If Yang ever found her, she'd use them like her personal heavy bag, rips, tears and all. "But not at you."
Relief flooded Jaune's face. "Oh, thank the brother go- Whmph!" Yang pulled him into a searing kiss, full of passion and emotion. She couldn't stop herself, she just needed to. To feel his body flushed against hers, his scent, his taste, just… him. Gods, why was she acting like an idiot? This was the exact opposite thing she needed to do!
Must… Stop…
With iron will and a tinge of regret, Yang was able to pull away from him. "You…" He looked taken aback and flushed, just like she was. "You need to go find Ruby."
Jaune gave her a confused. "Why? I'm sure she's fine."
Her hands pulled her forward, the nails scarping onto the floor, trying to grab the thief, criminal, or whatever that was writhing on the floor with them. She was just a few meters away before Amber eyes that looked a lot like Blake's stared back at her o the floor, an angry snarl etching itself on her face. A ball of fire appeared in her hand, the flames growing bigger and brighter by the second. Ruby's eyes widened in understanding.
"Oh no."
Ugh, you idiot, don't use logic on me!
"She's your date, and probably got herself into trouble, knowing her." She sighed, looking away, trying to find an excuse and attempting to stay strong. Emotions wrestled inside her. Between letting her enjoy the moment or trying to put Ruby first was becoming more difficult by the moment. Is she really such a bad sister?
"Pyrrha's with her." Jaune waived it off like it was nothing. "Besides…" He gently grabbed her hand, callused and solid just like hers. "We haven't danced yet." Those words were enough to crumble her shoddy resistance. Yang had to stop him but couldn't bring herself to. Maybe she could appease him? Could that work?
"Alright." She turned back to him, looking into those deep blue eyes of his. A curse died in her mind about how mesmerizing they were. "One dance."
"Perfect." For the second time that night, Yang was led to the dance floor. Anxiety, longing, regret, and happiness danced inside her like some sick carnival, her frustration at her own emotions becoming the ringmaster. It was her own fault for letting them run rampant for so long. Just like her, they refused to heel to logic or reason, something she desperately needed right now.
Jaune led her to an open spot, the music washing over them with its heartbeat like rhythm. The vocalist was singing something important, but Yang couldn't listen as Jaune's metallic hand took her hip and pulled her close. Her other hand automatically intertwined with his. She needed to retake control, something, anything. He can't know how rattled she was.
"You're not half bad at this." Yang observed as they danced. He wasn't nearly as clumsy as she would've assumed. "Did Loverboy take dance lessons?" She teased.
"I didn't really have a choice…" He looked away. She had to fight down the burst of laughter bubbling up from her chest.
"No way! I was only kidding!" Perfect, he's flustered. "Now you've got to tell me."
"It started with Saphron…" Jaune sighed. "She wanted to ask out someone for the dance way back when and needed practice. Que me being dragged around the house, being used as a training dummy. After that, it sort of became tradition for my sisters to use me as practice for dance moves, recitals, plays, you name it. If it was important or they were trying to impress someone, I would be the guinea pig."
"Aw. That's sweet of you." An endearing image of him popped into her head, one where his sister was stepping on his toes, attempting to learn.
"Someone has to." He added, leading her on. "They're my family, you know? Dad always said, 'we have to help where we can.'"
"Your dad has a lot of sayings."
"Trust me, you'll hear plenty more."
Yang raised an eyebrow. "What makes you say that?"
"Well, I want you to meet my family, since we're dating now." The sentence so causally said caught her off guard.
"Say what now?" There was no way she could've heard that right.
"Meeting my family." Jaune said it again more certainly. "You're literally my first girlfriend and well… Is it weird for me wanting to show you off?" His cobalt eyes caught hers, the honesty in them stunning her. "You're beautiful." He continued, unaware of the things he was doing to her heart. "You and Violet would get on like a riot, and I'm sure mom will just love you. Dad would already like you for being a Huntress, and Saph and Terra would…"
Yang listened as Jaune went on and on about his family meeting her. How they'd get along, support her, love her even. Another place to call home, to come back to after traveling around the world and seeing everything to have to offer. A place where there was always someone there, to tell stories, gossip, fight, anything under the sun.
Everything she ever wanted.
Where would that leave Ruby?
There was no doubt in her mind that they'd welcome her too, but that wasn't the issue. Ruby barely knew what it was like to have a family. One that she actually deserved, unlike her, who nearly got the both of them killed.
"Hey Jaune." She interrupted him, hating herself just a little bit more.
"What?" He looked at her, but Yang couldn't meet his eyes. "Is something wrong?"
No. I want it to stay like this.
"Yes." She sucked in a breath and finally looked up to him. "I… I don't think I should."
"Why not? Is it too fast?" Concern laced his voice.
"I just don't think we're good together." It was the truth; she wouldn't be good for him and he deserved better.
"Where's this coming from?" Their dancing stopped, his questioning gaze boring into her.
"I've been thinking about it, and I just don't think it would work out in the long run, you know? We want different things. I want to see the world, take risks, have adventures and you…" She was making excuses, saying anything that would get the point across.
"You don't know what I want." He shot back. "Hell, I'm just trying to figure what I'm going to do tomorrow!"
"I know it's not this. Hell, I started it, forced you in it even." She felt more ashamed of herself, stepping back. The bar was a mistake. A good mistake, but one none the less. "Just… Let's just be friends, alright?" His face was set in stone, studying her. "Just forget about this, after the dance. There are plenty of other fish in the sea." Like that one bitch. Mint. She committed the name to memory. Taking another step, Yang began walking away. Back to her dorm, maybe have a good cry in the shower to get everything out. That sounded like a good idea.
Her feet turned away from him, trying to gain distance.
Then a metal hand latched onto her wrist.
"You know what Yang? I think I know what I want." With strength that surprised her, Jaune whipped her around to face him. A protest died in her through when his other hand tipped her chin up, making her look into his eyes. "I want you."
Jaune's lips captured hers.
Yang's heart fluttered.
Ruby's bare feet padded across the marble floor of the hallway, headed back to the dance. Her ears still had that annoying ringing and her feet hurt, not to mention the burnt dress. She ditched the heels after Ozpin and Ironwood arrived at the tower to chew them out after that mystery woman got away. Seriously, she had to be Huntress level or above to hold off Pyrrha and her. On that note, she needed a backup plan for enclosed spaces. Something compact would be ideal.
At least she wasn't in huge trouble, the two headmasters still angry but understanding. She felt like she made a difference, too bad she missed most of the dance. Nearing the doorway, Ruby heard the band still playing and people chatting. Entering, she noticed it was a lot emptier than before, with noticeably fewer students and teachers mulling about. Thing is though, it wasn't what her silver eyes were immediately drawn to.
On the dancefloor, barely illuminated by the lights of the ballroom, were Jaune and Yang.
Together.
Kissing.
Dumbstruck, she could only stare from afar as the deepened it, her sister linking her arms around her partner. Yang pulled away first, but Jaune still held her close gazing deeply into her eyes. She didn't know what they were saying, only that her vision was starting to turn blurry and that a lump in her throat was threatening to suffocate. Her stomach felt twisted, knotted, and heavy, her legs carrying her back to the dorm.
"Oh…"
Tears were choked back, the back of her hand wiping away the wetness staining her mascara. Of course that would happen. Jaune was her partner. That was it. Why would he be interest in her? And with Yang being so womanly, confident, strong, and freaking perfect, why wouldn't Jaune choose her over little fifteen-year-old Ruby? It just made sense. Who would honestly ever like her? She was always the awkward one, the weird one.
Her knees sank to the carpet, the dorm room door sliding shut behind her. There she was, alone. Where she should be. "I'm such an idiot." The murmur escaped Ruby's lips, her body crawling to the comfort of her bed. Curling on herself to stop the pain heart, the tears finally flowed freely.
"I'm such a Gods damned idiot."
Yeah, whole lot of nothing in my opinion, but hey, it's plot, fluff, or whatever you want to call it. Things are progressing and that's all that matters. We'll be back in the gritty stuff soon, I promise. Also the reason why I haven't update for a while is because work decided to do a lot of overhauling on the site, which means a shit ton of overtime for me. Thankfully, we're just about done and I can go back to a semi regular schedule.
Either way, I'm going to be on the beach for the next week where I won't be giving a damn. No kids, no perky responsibilities. Just me, the wife, and copious amounts of alcohol.
Until next time.
