Mistake
Chapter 27
Mike smiled as he laid down next to Maddie. He had taken Katie fishing in the bayou. It had been a hot and exhausting day, but Katie had seemed to enjoy it and that was all that mattered to Mike. The next day; he was taking her back to Antioch, something he was not looking forward to. But, she wanted to be there when the baby came and she wanted to be there for Christmas. She was also checking into nursing schools there.
"Hey, babe." Maddie said in a sleepy voice.
"Hey. Sorry I woke you." Mike said. Maddie turned and gave him a kiss.
"Its okay. You were out late." Maddie remarked.
"Yeah, after we got done fishing; I took her to this dive type restaurant. Cajun food. It was really good." Mike said.
"Those places are always an experience. You had a good day though?" Maddie asked.
"It was great. I enjoyed it." Mike said.
"Good. I am glad. Once you get Katie back to Antioch, it might be a good idea to take Hannah out for the day. She's feeling a bit neglected." Maddie said.
"Yeah and I want to take Billy out too, especially before the baby arrives." Mike replied before giving Maddie a kiss.
"Just two more months before she's here. Its hard to believe." Maddie said. The summer was getting to her and she was heavily pregnant.
"It'll go by fast." Mike said.
"Mom said I was going to go into nesting mode. I thought she was joking, but I seriously hate leaving the house." Maddie remarked.
"Stay in then. I can handle any errands. I'm glad you aren't having to work the restaurant right now." Mike said.
"Hannah thinks she needs to cook all the meals and do all the cleaning. I kind of feel bad. She spoils me." Maddie said, apparently knowing Mike's relationship with Hannah was still a bit strained.
"She is a good girl." Mike said.
"Mike; she really loves you a lot. Just be careful that you don't push her away. She loves that you are fixing things with Katie but she thinks now, you don't love her." Maddie explained.
"Did she say something?" Mike asked.
"In not so many words. Get Katie back to Antioch and then spend some time with Hannah. She just needs some one on one time with you." Maddie answered.
"I don't even really know her interests." Mike admitted.
"Its not fishing. She's more of a city person. She is a foodie and saw on the news there is supposed to be some food truck festival this weekend. She's excited about it. You might try that." Maddie said.
"I wouldn't mind that." Mike said.
"Good. Just make it a plan. I can handle Billy for the day. I'm pregnant, not dead." Maddie said.
"Yes, ma'am. You better go to sleep. I will handle Hannah when I get back." Mike replied. She kissed her forehead and pulled her close. He knew she was right, of course. He just had to figure out how to bridge the gap between him and Hannah.
