Chapter 27: Coolheaded Coldhearted Demon, Pirate Fleet Chief Commander Gin!

As Luffy's leg returned to its proper position, the plume of seawater managed to finally douse the last of the fires Pearl started, but pretty much shattered the entire fin into pieces. Many chefs and Krieg's pirates were thrown into the water, or desperately trying to hold onto whatever flotsam they could find. Sanji was blown back onto his rear, while Nami and Usopp were also in the same position.

"Is…Is everyone okay?" Usopp asked, shaking as he held onto the fallen mast from the Dreadnought Sabre.

"Wait a minute…Where's Ragnar!?" Nami asked, horrified by the prospect that their quartermaster was sinking like a bag of hammers.

"Over here! I'm fine," said a familiar voice, and Nami and Usopp looked behind them to see that Rangar was…treading water!?

"Y-You're floating!?" Usopp asked in pure disbelief.

"But…But you ate a Devil Fruit!" Nami uttered out, "How are you still able to swim!?"

"I never said I ate my Devil Fruit," said Ragnar, as he got up onto the remnants of the fin, shaking himself dry, "Look, I promise I'll explain it all when this is all over." Yet then he saw the anger in Krieg's face.

"He's trying to sink my ship!" Krieg shouted, his eyes wide with rage, "You dare defy me, boy!?" Then he looked to Gin, who was still holding Zeff down at gunpoint, "GIN! BLOW HIS HEAD OFF IMMEDIATELY!" Hearing this order, Gin only hesitated in fear. "FIRE! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR!?"

"But…Captain, he…he saved our lives when we were starving!" Gin replied, "He gave us food!" Yet still Krieg only looked on with apoplectic rage at his subordinate.

Simultaneously, Sanji got up, making his way towards Luffy, angry that the Straw Hat captain would do such a thing to his home.

"Back off, Straw Hat! What do you think you're doing!?" He asked, grabbing Luffy by the waistcoat, "I won't let you sink this ship!"

"Think about it. If the restaurant's gone, there's no reason for them to attack, right?" Luffy asked.

"NO!" Sanji roared back, "This ship saved my life! I owe everything to her, and you will not deprive me of that!"

"So, you're really gonna just sacrifice your life to protect a restaurant!?" Luffy asked, enraged, "Are you honestly that dense!?"

"What did you just say!?"

"You heard me!" Luffy then grabbed Sanji by his jacket and glared right at him, "Getting killed!? That's how you wanna repay your debt!? Zeff didn't save you so that you could commit suicide! He did it so that you could do something with your life, not to die like a dumbass!"

"Luffy, stop! That's not helping at all!" Nami yelled. However, she could see that there was no getting to the two boys as they were bickering. Gin only looked on, then back down at Zeff as a familiarly arrogant voice made itself heard once more.

"Boys, there's no need to fight among friends, especially when your efforts are futile," said Pearl, getting to his feet as he approached Sanji and Luffy, "Not while there's a double barrel flintlock pistol shoved up against the old man's chef's hat! Your problems began when you decided to resist the Krieg Pirates. We are unstoppable!" Pearl only banged his bucklers together, and charged at Luffy and Sanji, shields ablaze. "FIRE PEARLS! Now, you will burn!" The self-proclaimed Invincible Shield only cackled as he charged right towards Luffy and Sanji, fully intending on incinerating them both here and now, but just as he could induce third-degree burns on both of them, Gin suddenly jumped between the two, armed with giant tonfas with mace-heads at both ends, then he smashed one of his weapons right into Pearl! The force of the impact shattered one of Pearl's pectoral disks, the one covering his frontside, causing it to crumble to pieces as he fell to his knees. "What did…you just…do, Gin?" Pearl asked, falling unconscious.

"I'm sorry, Pearl, but you're in my way," Gin coldly replied as Pearl crashed face first onto the deck. Luffy, Sanji and the other Straw Hats only looked on in utter shock. Did Gin just save their lives!? What was going on inside that man's head.

"What…What did he just…!?" Usopp asked, in total shock.

"I dunno…but I don't think he did it for us," said Nami, readying her spear and shield for a fight.

"Either way, he at least took down that pyromaniac," Ragnar commented, "Odds are that we could still win this battle." Yet the Viking only readied his own bearded axe and looked on ahead at Krieg, who was definitely irked by this development.

"Gin! You have betrayed your captain and this ship!" Krieg yelled in anger.

"I know, and I'm sorry Don Krieg," Gin replied, "But I can't kill him, not like this. He deserves better! He deserves to die on his feet, but I promise you…" He then turned to face Sanji and Luffy both, "…He will still die at my hands."

"Oh, great. My chief commander has now completely lost it," Krieg muttered as he shook his head despairingly. At the very least, he was slightly relieved that Gin didn't totally betray the crew.

Back at the Baratie, Patty and Carne were helping Zeff recover after the pushdown Gin gave him. Yet Sanji only looked on in disbelief, glaring intently at the man he saved.

"He's their chief commander?" Sanji asked in disbelief.

"I guess, I mean look at what he did," said Patty, "Did you see him crush that other guy?"

"One blow and his armor shattered," Carne added, "Now, that is what I call power."

Luffy only sensed that Gin was seriously intent on killing Zeff, but unlike Krieg, he at least had a sense of honor. The Chief Commander then made himself known once more.

"Sanji!" Gin called out to the sous-chef, "Look, this is nothing personal. I'm just following orders. I don't want to destroy this ship, but I think it's too late for that."

"Maybe," replied Sanji, trying to remain cool and collected, "But if you think you're gonna get to this restaurant by killing me, you've got another thing coming!"

"Fair enough," Gin replied, "It will be an absolute pleasure to kill you, my friend. I'll see to it that you're buried at sea with full honors."

"Gee…that's comforting, asshole," Sanji muttered, not caring as Gin turned his attention to the Straw Hats.

"You and your friends too, Straw Hat," Gin told them, "Once I'm done with Sanji, I'll be taking your heads next."

"You're welcome to try!" Ragnar growled.

"Like my quartermaster said," Luffy added, "Besides, he and I aren't afraid of any Krieg Pirates." Those words coming out of Luffy's mouth only served to further enrage the Krieg Pirates left alive, most of whom were still floating in the water, or clinging onto any wreckage they could, and soon enough they began yelling and grumbling at Luffy and his friends, much to Usopp and Nami's mutual horror.

"Luffy, do you seriously wanna tick these guys off any further!?" Usopp asked, his knees shaking underneath him.

"Seriously! There's a reason these guys are considered the rulers of the East Blue!" Nami added, trying to remain calm.

"Yeah, you're right, Nami," said Luffy, "But that's only because these guys outnumber all the other pirates in the East Blue." That only served to further anger those men, and a few of them tried charging forward armed with swords and daggers for Luffy, but Krieg stopped them.

"HOLD YOUR POSITIONS!" Krieg yelled, stopping his men dead in their tracks, as he sat down, "You only prove his point when you lose control or start bickering like children. Do you see me tremble with anger!? Only the weak react to mere words! DON KRIEG PIRATES RUN FROM NO MAN!" His words only seemed to calm them and make them regain their composure. For a cowardly fighter, Krieg definitely had charisma. He then turned to Gin with a grimace, "Gin! You go ahead and kill this cook." Then he grinned and looked directly at Luffy, "I'll go and handle the Straw Hat boy. That brat is all mine!"

"I understand, yessir," Gin replied, locking his gaze to Sanji, ready for the battle of his life.

"Hey, boy!" Krieg told Luffy, "You and your Viking pal can work your Devil Fruit magics on me, but I've seen it all before and have never been defeated by such trickery. When you experience the full force of the pirates that conquered the East Blue, then you'll understand the meaning of power, boy!"

"Y'know, you're really starting to piss me off," Luffy growled, "I'm gonna kick your ass, it's plain and simple. So, hold on just a sec! I'll be right there."

"It doesn't matter how many weapons you are armed with," Ragnar added, grinning toothily, "If my captain can't beat you, then I'm going to pry that armor off your body!"

All eyes were now focused on Sanji and Gin, who both were sizing each other up from the silence that fell over them both. Yet even so, the Krieg Pirates only chuckled with confidence and seemingly were proud that this happened.

"That cook is a dead man."

"Yeah, when Gin takes out his weapons, he means serious business."

"They call him the cold-hearted demon!"

"He's our cool-headed, cold-hearted chief commander, Gin! It doesn't matter if you beg for mercy or not, he'll laugh in your face as you die, regardless."

Gin began spinning his right tonfa as his gaze met with Sanji's, determined to prove his worth to his captain and fulfill his mission.

"I'm sorry about this, Sanji," he said to the sous-chef, "But I cannot be defeated here."

"Yeah, yeah, go ahead," Sanji muttered, "Keep telling yourself that." The blonde sous-chef only lit a cigarette as Gin came charging straight at him, fully ready to kill his opponent in honorable combat.

"Prepare yourself!" Gin shouted, giving Sanji only a brief chance to react. Sanji only tried to counterattack before Gin could, but the man-demon smartly retreated, evading the kick. Gin slammed his right tonfa into the deck, sending wood splinters flying all over, but luckily Sanji jumped out of the way, glaring at the man whose life he saved. Still, Gin proved more of a competent fighter than he appeared to be, as he pulled his tonfa out of the ground, right for Sanji's right flank. With grace and dexterity, the sous-chef evaded the blow, and tried to land another kick. As he was still in midair, Gin only turned fast enough to evade the foot strike, finally managing to pin Sanji down to the ground, his tonfa's shaft pinned down on the sous-chef's neck while he sat cross-legged.

Ragnar, Nami and Usopp were all shocked at the sight. Sanji was certainly taking the beating of his life, but they all couldn't help but admire how gracefully the blonde moved as he fought.

"C'mon, Sanji! Get up!" Nami shouted, trying to encourage him to get up.

"You can do this, Sanji!" Usopp cheered.

"On your feet, sous-chef!" Ragnar chimed in, "Do not feed your fear, conquer it!"

Yet Sanji only couldn't move as he felt the great bar of iron nearly cutting off his airways, as he was unable to lift his head. He was pinned, trapped!

"I tried to warn you, but you refused to listen to reason," said Gin, who began spinning his left tonfa while tightening the grip on his right, "And now…it's time to accept your fate." All the Krieg Pirates cheered Gin on, but somehow, Sanji kept himself calm and collected as he exhaled a puff of tobacco smoke. "Now…DIE SANJI!" Gin yelled, and began to strike the lethal blow right onto the man's head, but in that instant, Sanji only spit out his lit cigarette, the lit tip burning Gin right in the forehead, causing him to miss. Seeing his chance, Sanji used his hands to lift his body up from the deck, freeing himself from Gin's grasp and allowing him to land a kick straight down onto his opponent's head.

Gin only spat up a gob of blood, only to tighten his grip on his right tonfa, and strike Sanji in the waist with a backhand swing. Both young men fell to the deck, bloodied and exhausted. The outcome was seemingly decided: it was a draw! Even the Krieg Pirates were awestruck by this turn of events.

"Is this the end for Gin the man-demon?" One of them asked.

"You idiots!" Krieg called out, "After all this time, you should know a helluva lot better than that, men. There's a reason I trust him more than any of my other officers. Gin is a cold-hearted, cool-headed demon, and he never surrenders!"

True to Krieg's word, Gin rose to his feet, and so too did Sanji, but it was clear that the boy was staggering, delirious with pain from the damage he received, all while clutching his ribs.

"I can't believe that Sanji's still standing!" Patty muttered.

"He should just stay down," Carne added, "After the beating he took, his ribs must be totally shattered!"

"That's it, Luffy," Ragnar told his captain, "If Sanji does agree to join as our chef, then the next crew member we recruit must be a doctor."

"Oh, he'll join us, count on it!" Luffy declared, just keeping his eyes on the fight ahead.

Sanji only painfully wheezed through cracked ribs as he gave a smug grin at Gin. This fight was definitely getting intense, and Sanji couldn't help but think that his foe was definitely stronger than he anticipated.

"Well…not…too bad…chief commander…" Sanji groaned, "…Just…lemme know…when you're…really ready to…fight…!" Yet Gin only grinned maliciously, licking the blood that trickled down from his lips.

Luffy couldn't help but notice that Krieg was sitting there, observing the fight like some spectator at an athletic event. He was wide open, it seemed!

"Ragnar, stay with Nami and Usopp," he told his quartermaster with a confident grin, "There's a suit of armor across the wreck with my name written on it!" Luffy only then charged across the felled mast, running at full speed straight for Krieg. Now, it was ass-kicking time! Yet surprisingly, Krieg only grinned at his foe.

"Watch your step!" He told Luffy, loading some kind of projectile onto his hand. As soon as Ragnar and Nami saw this, they both knew something was deeply off.

"LUFFY! LOOK OUT!" Ragnar shouted, but even so it was too late. Krieg plunged the ball into the water below the Dreadnought Sabre's mast, which exploded with an intense ferocity. A clicking sound was then heard, as Krieg's built in pauldron guns fired two lead balls right into Luffy's shoulder, sending him flying back across the mast and onto the wreckage of the fin. Krieg only laughed in triumph, only for Luffy to slam his straw hat onto the floor, glaring daggers at his foe.

"You're a bastard!" Luffy growled, "Don't you wanna fight me fairly!?"

"Fight you? Must I really? If all I plan to do is kill you, then that's more than enough for me," said Krieg, "I really don't give a crap about honor and mercy, you idiot."

"Now I see why he's called Foul-Play Krieg," Usopp hissed, already nocking an arrow onto his bow. This guy was even worse than Kuro ever was. Yet he knew that this was Luffy's fight.

"Oh yeah?!" Luffy asked Krieg, stretching his cheeks with his fingers, "Then how about I bite your head off!" Suddenly the Krieg Pirates began cheering with glee, and even Krieg began chuckling menacingly. Yet soon Luffy came to understand, that Krieg was not looking at him, but at something behind him.

The Straw Hats' captain turned, and saw Gin standing over a downed Sanji, who was now coughing up blood. Gin had struck a near fatal blow. If only Sanji hadn't fought against Pearl, then he'd be able to have a chance.

"Go ahead…you hit like a girl anyway," Sanji defiantly told Gin, painfully smiling in confidence. Yet even so, he still knew he couldn't go on like this anymore. 'This guy is way too strong for me to handle!' He only knew that one of them would walk away from this fight, and it probably wouldn't be him, given that Gin was still twirling his tonfa rapidly.

"Time to die!" The man demon declared, staring his opponent in the eyes, "This is the end, Sanji!" As Gin brought the tonfa down to the deck, Sanji couldn't help but notice something was off, and as Gin swung horizontally, he was able to dodge the attack by standing onto his hands.

"What was that!? Your pity!?" Sanji asked, but Gin gave no response. Seeing his foe was open, Sanji finally landed a kick right down on Gin's back, pinning him to the floor. "I'm not dead yet, aren't I!?" All the Krieg Pirates were shocked. Gin had finally been beaten!? This all seemed like a nightmare! Yet Sanji had no time to enjoy his victory when everyone heard a sickening crunch. Sanji dropped to his knees, clutching his ribs.

"No! Sanji!" Luffy cried, horrified by the sight.

"Oh Gods, I knew this was bound to happen," added Ragnar.

"If Sanji keeps this up, he's definitely gonna die!" Nami piped up, horrified as she covered her mouth with her shield-hand, tears welling up on her eyes.

Gin rose to his feet as he glared up at a seriously weakened Sanji, and even he could hear the crunching of broken ribs. Any one of those fragments could easily puncture one of his lungs! Krieg only smiled, knowing that his chief commander was once more victorious. At this, Gin pinned Sanji onto his back, keeping his left hand clasped on the sous-chef's neck, with a tonfa raised behind him in the right. Bloodied and beaten, Sanji only glared up at Gin, expecting the final blow to be struck, but then something happened, that Sanji wasn't expecting…he felt the sudden coolness of water fall right next to him. He looked up and saw the unthinkable: Gin…was crying!

"I…I can't do it…I can't follow your command…" Gin sobbed, indicating Krieg, but looking down at Sanji, "This man saved my life…!" He only lowered his tonfa and let go of Sanji's head, "I CAN'T, DON KRIEG! I CAN'T BRING MYSELF TO KILL HIM!" His words only touched Sanji, Luffy and the Straw Hats. It seemed even after all this time, Gin still was eternally grateful to Sanji. "I JUST CAN'T DO IT! I'M SORRY, CAPTAIN!"

"WHAT DID YOU SAY!?" Krieg bellowed, livid by his chief commander's sudden show of apparently perceived weakness.

"I CAN'T…DO…WHAT…YOU ASK!" Gin sobbed. Even now, he remembered Sanji's act of kindness, the smell and taste of that seafood risotto he was given four days earlier. Not even Krieg dared to show him a shred of kindness during all time he served as chief commander. That day, Gin was truly moved that a total stranger would put his job on the line for his sake, "This man…he treated me with respect…decency and kindness! That's why…I can't bring myself to kill him!" Gin kowtowed to Krieg, understanding that his Captain wouldn't tolerate this, but still he had to try, "I have always been loyal to you, up to now, I always believed in our cause. I respect you and appreciate all you bestowed upon me! Trusting me as your chief commander was the greatest honor in my whole life! Until today, I faithfully obeyed every single one of your orders without question! I just wouldn't be able to live with myself if I killed the man who saved me…and I can't break my oath! Please…I beg of you…let me disobey this one order! Please!" Silence fell over the battlefield. Everyone kept their eyes trained on Gin, not expecting this show of gratitude, of emotional outburst. It seemed that the man-demon had a sense of honor underneath his façade. "Don Krieg…please, hear me out! Can't we just leave? They can keep the restaurant for themselves. There are other ships we can use."

Pale with rage, Krieg rose from his seat and let out a furious roar. This was not what he was expecting from his chief commander. What Gin saw as honor was what Krieg interpreted as cowardice.

"YOU LITTLE BASTARD! YOU THINK YOU CAN DEFY MY ORDERS AND THEN TELL ME WHAT TO DO!?" Krieg bellowed out, only getting silence from Gin, "It's truly pathetic. Honor, morality, sympathy, mercy! Weaknesses I never expected from you! You are no longer my chief commander!" At those words, Krieg then removed his left pauldron and held it out in his left hand like a buckler. "Men! Move aside!" He told his crew, as the jolly roger on the pauldron suddenly opened up, revealing a hole in the center. Gin only widened his eyes in horror. Instantly he knew what was going to happen.

"NO! NOT THE GAS!" He begged. All at once, Krieg's crew were struck with terror at the sight.

"He's going to use the MH-5!" One shouted.

"We're all gonna die!" cried another.

Ragnar only got the faintest whiff coming from the hole in the pauldron, but even he gasped in horror as soon as he recognized it.

"Gods! NO!" He muttered, then looked to his crewmates, "GUYS! WE HAVE TO GET INSIDE! THAT THING IS POISONOUS!"

"Poison gas!?" Luffy asked, putting two and two together. Even without his Haki, he could still sense the panic in the air, Krieg's men scrambling to place their masks on, while some of the Baratie staff were shocked that such a tactic would be used.

"Gas is a coward's weapon!" Shouted one chef.

"You'll kill us all you bastard!" Roared another.

"All that matters in battle is which side emerges victorious," Krieg declared, shoving off the insults against him as he grinned, "If that means that more people have to die, then so be it. Poison gas is just a means to an end. Like the old saying goes, history is written by the victors. If you're good and dead, nobody can hear you complain anyway. When you have the guts to unleash such unspeakable atrocities, that is the true meaning of power!"

Most of the Krieg Pirates managed to don their gas masks, but still, some remained unconscious from the burst of Haki Luffy unleashed earlier.

"But half your own men are still unconscious!" Luffy shouted, "You'll end up killing them too!"

"It doesn't matter! I can find men who are stronger than them," Krieg declared, not even showing a shred of sympathy for his own men who were too helpless to do anything. Nami was right, Krieg and Kuro were cut from the same cloth.

"You sick heartless bastard!" Nami screeched, glaring daggers at Krieg, with her spear aimed right at the gaps in his armor. She was normally against killing, but in Krieg's case, she was more than willing to make an exception.

"If any of my people dared do something so dishonorable," Ragnar began, "Then I will not hesitate to rip out their spine!"

"He's insane!" Sanji hissed, then suddenly noticed that Gin took out his own gas mask, his hand shaking in terror.

"Might as well throw that gas mask away, Gin!" Krieg bellowed, "You are no longer worthy of being a Krieg Pirate. Now DIE!"

His rage fueled by seeing such a blatant disregard for one's own men, Luffy once again ran on the broken mast, charging straight at Krieg, a burst of Haki exuding from him.

"I'M NOT GONNA LET YOU KILL THOSE MEN, YOU BASTARD!" Luffy roared, even considering killing Krieg at this point.

"You're just wasting your time, STRAW HAT!" Krieg shouted, banging the mast with a hammer-fist, which sent the huge piece of timber crashing in the water, forcing Luffy to come to a screeching halt, nearly losing his balance in the process. All at once then, the rim of the pauldron opened up, revealing more holes, and behind was some kind of ammunition belt. Immediately, Luffy sensed the danger, as a rapid fire volley of yellow and green striped darts came shooting straight at the boy, like bullets from a gatling gun! Luffy fled across the mast back to the wreckage of the fin, until he was finally safely out of range and was staring down Gin in the face.

"Gin! Listen to me!" He told the man-demon, "You don't have to listen to that bastard, because I'm gonna kick his ass!"

"No! Luffy, my captain cannot be beaten!" Gin insisted, knowing that Krieg was far more than able to kill anyone, "Don Krieg is the strongest man in the East Blue, and I respect his punishment."

"Will you please snap out of it!?" Sanji snapped, glaring up at Gin, "That psychopath is going to kill you!"

"It's what I deserve," explained Gin, "To succumb to my emotions is tantamount to treason…and to betray Don Krieg is to invite death. If I were in his position, I would do the same…death is the only honor I have left." Then he threw his gas mask aside, not even bothering to watch as it landed…right at Nami's feet.

"So, you finally came round to your senses," Krieg snickered, before his face turned to a frown again, "Unfortunately for you, I don't give second chances." He then shouted, "IT'S THE MH-5…POISON…GAS BOMB…FIRE!"

With a sickening burst from the barrel of the pauldron, a red exploding shell came firing out at top speed, with a sickly green flame propelling it. Instantly, many chefs who were in the water held their breaths and dived underwater, as did those of Krieg's men who were regaining their senses from Luffy's Haki outburst. Nami donned her gas mask, but was completely frozen with terror as she saw Luffy stand completely still.

"Luffy! Get inside, quick!" She pleaded, "Not even you can survive that thing!"

"Don't worry about me! Just get inside!" Luffy replied, "I'll definitely survive this!"

"But…the bomb!"

"Just GO! I promise, I won't die here today!"

Nami only looked on, paralyzed with fear as she felt Usopp and Ragnar pulling her towards the restaurant.

"You heard the captain!" Ragnar told her, "We have to get inside, or we're all earning a one-way ticket to Helheim!" Realizing that she was unable to convince him, Nami threw Luffy her gas mask, hoping it would reach him.

"Luffy! Just promise me, you'll get that gas mask on!" She called out, her fear eating away at her mind. 'You'd better survive this, Luffy! You just have to!'

Krieg pulled down his own gas mask, and everyone else that was outside could only look on…

Suddenly, two Krieg pirates felt their gas masks pull away from their faces, as Luffy's hands snapped back to his arms, and he tossed the masks to Gin and Sanji.

"Sanji! Gin! Catch!" He shouted, throwing them both the gas masks, then looked down, but was unable to find anymore Krieg Pirates who could lend him one… quickly he looked down, only to see that the gas mask Nami threw was sinking underwater, and the gas bomb was flying closer and closer… he wasn't going to make it! All he could do was scream in terror as the shell detonated in front of his eyes. "DON'T DIE! DON'T DIE! DON'T DIE!" He screamed, only stopping as he noticed a gas mask thrown to his side. He knew he had to don it before…

BOOM! The entire wreckage was suddenly engulfed in the fireball, which gave way to a noxious purple gas cloud. Anyone without a gas mask was going to die. Nami only looked outside the window, tears streaming down her cheeks. Was this really the end for that brave young boy who saved her life?

"LUUUUUUFFFYYYYYYYY!" She screamed in horror as loud as she could.

A/N: What's this?! Ragnar, a Devil Fruit user...can actually swim!? I know what you're all thinking: what is going on!? How can a Devil Fruit user swim!? Well, unfortunately, it will have to wait until the beginning of the Arlong Park Arc, as this is definitely something that the Vikings don't like others knowing about. It's a religious and cultural matter, and to them, it's not usually meant to be discussed amongst outsiders, but Ragnar may definitely have to mention it to his crewmates, once Sanji joins the crew, that is.

Will Luffy survive the MH-5 poison gas bomb? Stay tuned!
