What his wife had said still haunted him. She had said with such conviction that he did not love her. That he was not hers to have. As if he was leagues above her. As if she was the one not worthy of him. When in reality he was not worthy of her. He never would be.
He had tried his best to show her how wrong she was over the past week. He showered her with affection and attention, well as much as he was capable in this body that didn't always like touching. He had given her control in the bedroom. Let her ride him until completion while he whispered all the ways he belonged to her in her ear.
She had smiled and cried and laughed with him. As if she were satisfied with his words. Like she was happy. He was foolish and blind, like always. It all came to light when he asked if he should get a job. The smile that she had on her face disappeared like it was never there.
"If that's what you want," she said simply
"Wait, what's wrong," he asked
"Nothing Theta, I understand," she sighed and walked to their bedroom
He saw her hug herself as she walked away. A clear sign that she was trying to protect herself. He had seen her do it many times before. Namely when he said something idiotic or she was feeling insecure. If he had to guess this time he would say it was a combination of the two.
"Melody. Talk to me," he pleaded
"Do you want to get away from me?" she asked
"No. Why," he breathed, "Why would you think that,"
"Well we don't need the money so why else do you want to get a job? Do you feel bored or restless just being with me every day," she questioned
"Of course not. You are one the most exciting things I've ever known," he laughed
"You know, every time I wake up and you're not there I'm afraid you've left me here," she whispered as tears left her eyes, " That you got sick of pretending and finally decided to go,"
"Riv-" he started
"No matter how many times you say you won't there's still a part of me that doesn't believe you, " his wife cried, "Every time you try to convince me that you are ready to be my husband a little voice in my head says that you will never truly be my anything. You are everywhere. All of the time. How can any part of you be mine? " she asked
"You are Amy's raggedy man, Donna's best friend, Rose's-" she began
"Your husband. I am your husband," he professed
"Doctor," she whimpered
"No Melody, you listen to me right now," he demanded as he grabbed her face
"I am always yours. No matter the face and no matter the time. We have had hundreds of weddings. We have had thousands of dates. No one gets the parts of me that you do. No one," he growled
"I know how you've up and down my timeline. I remember that each and every one of my faces fell in love with you. They all enjoyed the time you shared and wanted more of it. We will never have enough time, but I will spend all of our time proving to you that you have me," he promised
"Melody Pond, River Song, I love you. I have always loved you and I always will," he confessed
"Then why the job" she wondered
"I was worried you would get sick of being around me all the time. I know this face isn't as nice as my last one," he admitted
"Oh Doctor, this one is the best one yet," she smiled as she wiped the tears that now fell from his eyes
"Yeah?" he smirked as he preened for her
"Yes. My Doctor," she sighed
At this, he pulled her in for a kiss. He tried to pour his love and devotion into it. He pulled away and beamed down at her.
"Aren't we a pair of idiots," she laughed
"Yes, but you're my idiot," he smiled
"I wouldn't have it any other way, sweetie," she grinned as she leaned back in and captured his lips.
