I've had a chest tube before, but I was completely unconscious for it. This time not so much. I'm given meds, but I still remember bits and pieces of it. At least, Edward is quick and adept. It's not long before I'm resting upstairs with Alice and Jasper by my side—both of whom are being huge babies.
"You should have told me you were feeling out of breath," Jasper says.
"You could have died, Bella," Alice adds.
"But I didn't. And right now, I'm getting morphine, so let me just enjoy it."
"I'm not leaving you alone here tonight," Alice says. "You're lucky Edward is a good neighbor and doctor and came to check on you."
"I'll admit that he's a good doctor."
"And neighbor."
"I won't admit that."
"You're stubborn even when drugged." She huffs. "I'm going to get coffee. Jazz?"
"I'll come with you so Bella can get some rest," he says. "No matter how many times you press the button, the morphine has a limit."
"Yeah, yeah, yeah."
It's a sad fact. Once they leave, I turn on my good side and try to close my eyes, but I'm disturbed by Cullen entering the room. He had changed into green scrubs when we got here, and he's still in them.
"How do you feel?"
"Like there's a tube in my chest."
He nods. "Sounds accurate. Breathing a little easier?"
I nod, punching the pillow into shape. "The bed could be more comfortable and the pillows a little more fluffy."
"I'll make sure to get you some more. How's the pain?"
I smile. "You gave me morphine. There's no pain, darling."
He chuckles and pulls a stool over, sitting down in front of me. "It is a nice drug. But you won't get it forever. I just wanted to check on you before going home. Dr. Garrett Reynolds will take over your care from here on out. He's a decent guy and a good hospitalist."
"Garrett?"
"You know him?"
I laugh and it hurts. I banged Garrett about four months ago. We had a nice one night stand, but that's all it was. I met him at the bar and one thing led to another. He did shots off my belly button.
"Yeah, I know him. He's fun when you get him drunk."
Edward rolls his eyes. "You screwed him, didn't you?"
I nod. "Yeah, but it was all amicable. We're on good terms."
"And you think I'm a manwhore."
"They look young, Cullen. And there is a college one town over."
"Some are in their early twenties, but most are not."
"The one who keeps coming back isn't a child at least."
He winces. "We're really talking about this, aren't we?"
"Hey, you've got me high on drugs. Who is she?"
He shakes his head. "I'm not talking about this right now. Just remember neither of us is innocent. I've seen men making the walk of shame out of your house too."
I smile. "Not as often as they do yours."
"I'm going to get you more pillows so you can get some rest."
"I would appreciate that."
He stands from the stool and leaves the room for a few minutes. He's either more tolerable when he saves your life or it's just the morphine. Either way, I miss his presence once he goes for good. He brings me three more pillows, and I manage to find some comfort and close my eyes.
I don't own Twilight.
Thanks to Ashley, May, and Mary prereading and Sally for beta'ing.
