After all that hoopla with the bed situation, the guys finally agreed on a compromise: Gabby would not sleep on that lumpy couch anymore. Instead, they would have her sleep on a wheeled bed in the rumpus room. That way, she could have a comfortable place to sleep and she would still sleep away from the other guys. Truthfully, Gabby didn't feel comfortable sleeping in the same room as the other guys, either. Based on how Peter was acting around her, she was becoming a bit less attracted to him. On the bright side, this was better for a professional relationship. Nothing gets in the way of business like romantic feelings.
Considering the shenanigans that Egon and Janine were up to before Gabby was hired (the same shenanigans whose consequences led to her being hired in the first place), it wasn't completely unreasonable that Peter would want Gabby sleeping separately from the male ghostbusters.
It was a good thing she had that girl-to-girl talk with Janine. She honestly didn't mind being called a girl as long as it was an informal context. It was only when one of the guys was using it in a professional context that it bothered her.
That Monday afternoon, the crew got a call. They were desperately needed at Carnegie Hall. There was not just one ghost, but many. There was an entire orchestra of them, at least according to the person who called. That was all that needed to be said before the gang made their way over to the prestigious musical hall.
Peter, Ray, Winston and Gabby made their way through the crowd of people that consisted of both onlooking pedestrians and people who had been evacuated from the building. Gabby overheard the people commenting about their arrival, including a myriad of voices who were surprised that a lady ghostbuster was with them. This was the first mission that Gabby went on that had a large audience.
As soon as the doors closed behind them, they were met with an empty lobby. The floor was dirty from where so many people stepped, but otherwise, everything looked immaculate. They made their way to the concert hall with their guns at the ready and nothing but the sounds of their footsteps.
Gabby was tasked with holding the PKE meter. As they neared closer to the doors leading to the auditorium, it was registering more activity. So, too, was her "inner" PKE meter. She had become acclimated enough with the spirits that their presence incited a distinct chill within her, different from one that would be caused by frigid temperatures. She was sometimes happy to get this chill, such as when she talked to Gertrude or summoned the nature spirits, but this one was troubling.
"Okay, I'll peek into the auditorium and see what we're up against," said Winston.
Winston carefully looked into the auditorium while the other ghostbusters waited on baited breath.
"You guys," said Winston, "All those ghosts are sitting in the orchestra with instruments. And it looks like the conductor wants an audience."
"What do you mean?" asked Ray.
"He's waiting for us to come in."
All four of them walked into the auditorium. The seats in the audience were empty and dark but the stage was bursting with color. In the orchestra were different-colored ghosts and demons, each with an instrument in their possession. None of the ghostbusters knew how they acquired these instruments. There was a good chance that they scared their original players off or they threatened them into handing over the instruments. However way they did it, they looked prepared and professional, although a fair number of the ghosts had fangs, claws and bodily growths that they were proud to show off. One demon had put the large drum aside and instead decided to bang on his big belly.
The conductor was tall, skinny and wore a tailored suit. Everything about him seemed human… except for his highly-unsettling insectoid head. His multiple eyes couldn't miss the ghostbusters as they made their way toward the stage.
"All right, what's going on, here?" asked Peter. His voice echoed through the massive room.
The conductor didn't say a word. Instead, he turned around and tapped the stand with his baton three times. He raised both arms into the air with gusto while the ghosts in the orchestra readied their instruments for playing. The ghostbusters braced themselves for what was about to happen. If these had been regular humans, they would have been treated to some quality (hopefully) classical music. But these were supernatural beings that caused everyone to evacuate. Their motives couldn't have been good.
And then, the first four jarring chords of Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 started to play:
DUN-DUN-DUN-DUUUUUUUUUN… DUN-DUN-DUN-DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUN…
As the ghosts played their instruments, swirling neon colors came from the stage and hit the ghostbusters like a tsunami. The powerful force blew them onto their backsides. Each time they tried to get up, another wave would knock them back down. Gabby's mind was cloudy for a good few seconds after the last neon wave hit her.
"I don't think I want to be blown away by any other piece of music anytime soon," said Winston.
Once the first eight notes of Symphony No. 5 were played, the rest of the piece commenced. The music no longer produced neon waves that knocked people over but it did produce ghostly musical notes that bounced off the stage and into the audience. As these notes bounced and moved through the air, it became apparent that they had little minds of their own and that they knew who the enemies were in this situation. They formed a musical note tornado around the four of them, blocking them from getting a good look at the ghost orchestra.
"On the count of three, everybody," said Ray as he aimed his proton gun, "One…"
"Three!" shouted Peter.
All four of them fired their guns, only for the musical notes to dash out of the way. It was as though they were made out of material that specifically resisted proton beams.
Gabby felt ballsy enough to attempt escape by simply pushing the musical notes away. To her surprise, this was easy to do and she managed to jump out of the whirlwind. The other ghostbusters followed suit once they saw Gabby doing it.
The orchestra played on but didn't create any more ghostly musical notes. Even they knew that the music hall would be crowded with them if they did. The ones that were previously swirling around their targets stopped their whirlwind and set their sights on the ghostbusters once more. Now, they showed their little, angry eyes and jagged, crooked teeth that they had every intention of using. They flew toward the ghostbusters and latched on with their tiny-yet-effective mouths.
The jumpsuits were protective when it came to ectoplasm but the pain from these bites seared through every part of Gabby's body. She winced, trying to stay strong for the guys.
"Damn!" shouted Winston.
They did all manner of things to get the musical notes off their bodies, everything from hitting them to hitting their bodies against the seats. Fortunately, they fell off like bloated ticks. The ghostbusters ran off while the ghostly musical notes shook their heads and collected themselves.
Ray had the smart idea to get them while they were briefly down and out.
"Now!" he shouted.
They turned around and fired their proton guns, managing to get several dozen of them all together.
Yes, thought Gabby. Nothing more satisfying than finally getting those bastards.
The musical notes managed to get sucked into the trap. This was hardly a victory since the orchestra just created more of them.
As the dramatic classical piece played, the new musical notes that came out were bigger than the last ones. They still had soulless eyes and sharp teeth, but this time, they were more serpentine in nature. Their stems lay limp on the ground as their head rose up and set their sights on the ghostbusters. Some smaller musical notes floated around them like younger siblings until they became an angry tangled nest.
In theory, it should have been easy to attack them. But when Peter fired his proton gun, they easily evaded it.
Gabby knew to high-tail it in the other direction, although she definitely wasn't going to leave the auditorium. Once she heard distressed cries from the guys, she turned around. The larger musical notes wrapped their snake bodies around them. Perhaps she was smart to run with her tail between her legs rather than facing these monstrosities head on.
She was thankful for her quick speed, a trait that she was more than happy to show off during her training. But she wasn't out of the woods. These musical note ghosts were fast and knew precisely where she was. She climbed onto the theater seats to get an idea of how many were pursuing her. It was not a small number. The musical notes not only crowded the aisle and the area under the seats, they also floated and used their nippy little mouths to attack once more. Gabby shrieked as she tried to swipe the little ghosts off of her suit. She had no idea what to do. Her proton pack was practically useless.
The guys were still by the stage being simultaneously strangled and smothered by the musical notes.
"Save yourself, Gabs!" shouted Ray before a musical note covered his mouth.
"See, guys?!" shouted Peter. One of the giant musical notes had the end of its tail wrapped around his ankle and was holding him upside-down. "This is why we shouldn't support the arts!"
And then, one of the bigger musical note ghosts slithered up to Gabby and grinned. Quicker than Gabby could comprehend, it wrapped itself around her body. Luckily, her arms were not affected and she pushed down against this creature's body in an attempt to dislodge herself.
What was she to do?
But then she remembered that she had her wooden wand on her person. She cleverly hid it in her suit so that nobody would suspect anything. Now was the time to use it. While her arms were still free, she grabbed it and thought about what spell to use.
So many spells but only a few would work in this scenario. She had to use a spell that got to the crutch of this madness. She had to hit those ghosts where it hurt, namely the instruments that they played. She had the feeling that the musical note ghosts were being kept alive by the music and that they would die if the music ever stopped. But there would be a long while until this symphony was over. She had to do something now.
She then remembered a spell that would cause things to collapse. She once secretly used it on the bicycle of a bully who was bothering a neighborhood kid and she never regretted it. Now was the chance to use it on the instruments. All she had to do was alter some words and repeat the phrase three times (at the very least).
"Tightened parts become loose, instruments lose your use," she chanted. She gripped her wand fiercely and it started to glow purple. The piece of wood was filling with energy. "Tightened parts become loose, instruments lose your use…" She lifted the wand above her head and visualized all of the instruments falling apart, every screw, button, valve all over the stage. As the musical note snake squeezed her tighter, she knew she had to act fast. "Tightened parts become loose, instruments lose your use!"
Suddenly, out of her wand came a purple blast that expanded outward toward the stage and hit the performing ghosts head on.
WHOOSH
