The days that followed were a blur for Sakura. She threw herself into her work, determined not to let the pain of the breakup affect her professional life. After a month of going through the motions, she approached the Hokage's desk with determined step.
"Hokage-sama, can I talk to you for a minute?" Sakura asked.
Kakashi looked up from his paperwork, his eyes meeting Sakura's gaze. The air between them felt heavy with the weight of unspoken words and unresolved emotions.
"Of course, Sakura. Please, have a seat," Kakashi gestured to the chair in front of his desk.
Sakura took a deep breath, but shook her head, "It will be brief, Hokage-sama." Sakura declined, then handed a piece of paper to Kakashi. "That is my two weeks' notice. I want to return to the roster of mission active ninjas."
Kakashi accepted the piece of paper, his grey eyes scanning its contents. He looked up at Sakura, a mix of surprise and concern in his eyes.
"Sakura, is this because of... us?" Kakashi inquired, his voice tinged with regret.
"No, Hokage-sama. But I believe distance and space is what is best for us. It's... stifling. Returning to missions will be a nice change of pace."
Kakashi nodded, a somber understanding settling between them. "I respect your decision, Sakura. If that's what you believe is best for you, then I won't stand in your way. Just know that you're always welcome here, and if you ever need anything, don't hesitate to ask."
"Thank you, Hokage-sama," Sakura replied, her tone formal but carrying a hint of melancholy. "I also want to be on long-term missions outside the village."
"Sakura!" Kakashi stood up to bridge the distance between them. "You don't have to leave the village just because of me."
Sakura held her ground, meeting Kakashi's gaze with a mix of resolve and sadness. "It's not about you, Hokage-sama. The village needs me in a different capacity. My time as your assistant is long overdue. You can survive with just Shikamaru in this office. I need to see the world again. I need to be outside to remind myself why I fought."
Kakashi sighed, a heavy weight settling in his chest. He understood Sakura's need for a change, for a sense of freedom beyond the confines of the village. Yet, the realization that their paths were diverging created a bittersweet ache within him.
"I respect your decision, Sakura," Kakashi said, his voice tinged with a mix of regret and understanding. "You've always been a valuable asset to the village, and I know you'll continue to excel in whatever you choose to pursue."
Sakura nodded, a small smile on her face. "Thank you, Hokage-sama. I appreciate your understanding."
As Sakura turned to leave, Kakashi couldn't shake the sense of loss that lingered in the air. The dynamics of their relationship had shifted once again, and the realization that Sakura was stepping away from the role of his assistant left a void that he hadn't anticipated.
In the weeks that followed, Sakura transitioned back into the life of an active ninja. She took on challenging missions, honing her skills and embracing the thrill of the field. The village watched as she excelled, her strength and determination shining brightly. However, behind the scenes, Kakashi couldn't help but feel the absence of her presence in his office.
