"Tsunade-sama, any update?" Kakashi asked as he visited the hospital.
Tsunade, who was going through some medical charts at her desk, looked up as Kakashi entered. She sighed before responding, "No significant changes, Kakashi. Sakura is still in a medical-induced coma. Her body needs time to heal, and we're monitoring her closely."
Kakashi nodded, a heavy sigh escaping him. "Is there anything I can do? Any way I can help?"
Tsunade studied him for a moment before replying, "Right now, Kakashi, the best thing you can do is wait. Sakura needs time to recover, and we have the best medical team taking care of her. You, staying vigilant and causing a ruckus won't help her or the situation."
Kakashi's eyes tightened with frustration, but he nodded in understanding. "I just feel so helpless. I should have protected her."
"You can't protect her from everything." Tsunade said. "This is part of being a ninja."
Kakashi nodded, his gaze fixed on the floor. "I know, Tsunade. I just love her so much that it hurts seeing her that way."
"Does she know?" Tsunade asked him.
Kakashi looked up at Tsunade, his grey eyes reflecting a mix of vulnerability and regret. "I've showed her, but I didn't tell her enough. I pushed her away. I let her down."
"Do you really love her?" Tsunade asked him. "Are you absolutely sure that it is love?"
Kakashi sighed, his shoulders slumping with the weight of introspection. "I love her, Tsunade. I've come to realize it, especially after all that's happened. I just... I wasn't ready for a relationship, and I thought I was protecting her by pushing her away. But now I see that I failed her."
"If you're only realizing it now, maybe it's not love. It could be guilt that you're feeling. If you're guilty, I suggest that you step away. She's not a charity case. She can recover with or without you."
Kakashi's gaze hardened at Tsunade's words, a mixture of frustration and determination flickering in his visible eye. "It's not just guilt, Tsunade. I do love her. I might have been a fool to realize it too late, but my feelings for Sakura are genuine."
Kakashi's gaze hardened as he absorbed Tsunade's words. The truth in her assessment stung, and he couldn't deny the weight of guilt that loomed over him. He took a moment to collect his thoughts before responding.
"I don't want to be with her out of guilt," Kakashi admitted, his voice steady. "I want to be with her because I love her, and I want to make things right. I know I messed up, and I can't change the past, but I want to be there for her now."
"What will you do if she never wakes up, Kakashi?" Tsunade suddenly ask her. "What will you do if does wake up and want nothing to do with you? Are you going to walk away or are you going to show her that you love her? After this, what will you do? Will you let her spread her wings and fly to grow? Or are you just going to confine her here? Under your constant gaze."
Kakashi sighed, his gaze turning inward as he contemplated Tsunade's pointed questions. The weight of the responsibility he felt for Sakura's well-being hung heavy in the air.
"I don't want to confine her," Kakashi said, his voice tinged with a sense of determination. "I want her to be free, to pursue whatever makes her happy. If she wakes up and wants nothing to do with me, I'll respect her wishes. I'll support her, even if it means stepping aside. I just want her to be happy and have the life she deserves." He hung his head in shame. "And if she never wakes up, I'll tie up loose ends and I'll be with her. No matter where she goes."
Tsunade studied Kakashi for a moment, her gaze piercing through the layers of his emotions. She nodded slowly, acknowledging his words.
"If you're sincere about wanting what's best for Sakura, then you'll have to show it through your actions. Now, let the medical team do their job, and in the meantime, think about what you can do for her when she wakes up."
Kakashi nodded in agreement, a sense of determination settling within him. "I'll do whatever it takes to make things right. I owe her that much."
With that, Kakashi left Tsunade's office, his mind swirling with thoughts of the past and the future. He knew he had a long road ahead, one that required introspection, growth, and a genuine commitment to being there for Sakura.
Days turned into weeks, and Sakura remained in her medical-induced coma. The village buzzed with rumors and concern for the well-being of their esteemed kunoichi. Kakashi, too, felt the weight of the village's expectations and his own internal struggles.
During those weeks, Kakashi visited Sakura regularly, sitting by her bedside and reflecting on the choices that led them to this point. He started to read medical journals, learning more about trauma recovery and the emotional toll it takes on an individual. He wanted to be prepared, to understand what Sakura might be going through when she woke up.
One day, as he sat by her bedside, Kakashi noticed a subtle change in Sakura's vitals. His heart skipped a beat, and he leaned forward, studying her face for any signs of consciousness. The room seemed to hold its breath as Sakura's eyelashes fluttered, and her fingers twitched.
"Sakura?" Kakashi called out softly, his voice filled with a mixture of hope and anxiety.
Sakura's eyes slowly opened, blinking against the harsh hospital lights. She looked around, disoriented, before her gaze landed on Kakashi. Recognition flickered in her eyes, followed by a mix of emotions—confusion, apprehension, and perhaps a hint of relief.
"Hokage-sama?" Sakura's voice was weak, barely above a whisper.
Kakashi felt a surge of both relief and guilt. "Sakura, how are you feeling?"
Sakura took a moment to collect herself, her eyes searching Kakashi's face. "I... I don't remember much. The mission, and then..." Sakura stiffened as memories came flooding back to her. "Then, nothing." she lied smoothly to hide the dread that course through her whole system.
Kakashi studied Sakura's face, a mix of concern and relief evident in his grey eyes. "You've been through a lot, Sakura. But you're safe now. The medical team did everything to ensure that you're safe.
Sakura nodded, but her eyes held a guarded expression. "Thank you, Hokage-sama."
"You don't have to call me that," Kakashi said, his voice softening. "Just Kakashi is fine."
Sakura managed a small smile. "Kakashi, then. How long was I out?"
"Several weeks," Kakashi replied. "The recovery process took time, but you're on the path to healing now."
Sakura nodded, her gaze drifting away for a moment. Kakashi could sense a barrier in her, a distance she had created. He wanted to bridge that gap, to let her know that he was there for her, but he knew he had a lot to make up for.
"How's the village? Any major incidents while I was out?" Sakura asked, shifting the conversation away from herself.
Kakashi gave her a brief update on village matters, keeping the tone light. However, he could see the shadows of concern in Sakura's eyes, a silent understanding that there were still unresolved issues between them.
"I appreciate the update," Sakura said, her voice careful. "And thank you for being here."
Kakashi nodded, a solemn acknowledgment. "Sakura, we need to talk about—"
"Kakashi, not now," Sakura interrupted, her eyes pleading for a reprieve. "I just want to rest. I'll let you know once I'm ready to talk."
Kakashi respected Sakura's request, though the weight of their unspoken conversation lingered in the air. He stood up from his chair, placing a gentle hand on Sakura's shoulder.
"Take the time you need, Sakura. I'll be here whenever you're ready," he assured her.
Sakura managed a small, appreciative smile, and Kakashi left the room, leaving her to rest. As he walked through the hospital corridors, he couldn't shake the sense of urgency to make things right with Sakura.
