In life, James Moriarty was best known as a professor of mathematics and author of a treatise on the physics of asteroids. After death—and more importantly, after Dr. John Watson's publication the events that took place leading up to Moriarty's death—he was best known as the most powerful man in the criminal underworld. He was never destined to be known for his earliest career: that of a boy soprano in the All Hallows-by-the-Tower church choir. By all accounts, he had the voice of an angel. How far, Holmes had mused, had Moriarty fallen.
