drileyf requested: How about Fluff Bingo - Gordon, John and Grandma on a road trip, hilarity ensures.
liesorlife requested: Ooo. Can I request road trip with Gordon and Virgil please?
"Ready to go, boys?"
The resounding cheer of three excited boys answered Sally's question, and she chuckled as she finished buckling Gordon in before she shut the car door.
"Have fun!" Lucille called from where she stood at the front door, Alan in one arm and waving with the other.
"Make sure you wave to mommy," Sally said as she climbed into the driver's seat after sending a wave to the other woman herself.
"Bye!" They all waved excitedly out the window, their voices already filled with so much energy that Sally knew this was going to be a long, long trip.
Their waves died down as Sally started the car and began off down the long driveway of the farm, but if anything their words only grew in noise and enthusiasm. Sally would be able to put up with it for a while, so she left them to it. Afterall, they had thirteen hours to kill, so she needed them to stay occupied with something.
They were on their way to visit her sisters that lived down in San Antonio. The original plan was for the whole family to go, but Jeff, Lucille, Scott, and even little baby Alan had all fallen ill with something. John, Virgil and Gordon were the only ones left standing, and had shown no sign of contracting whatever cold the rest of their family had, so Sally decided to take her grandkids to see their great aunts on her own to let the rest of the family rest.
Jeff and Lucille had, understandably, been hesitant, as they knew their boys were a lot to handle. But Sally also knew her grandchildren, and this certainly wasn't her first rodeo, so she was happy to still take them on a mini vacation.
For the first hour or so of the journey, the boys seemed occupied enough. John was reading one of the several books he'd packed, whilst Virgil kept Gordon distracted by talking about all the things they saw out the window.
However, it wasn't long before Sally had to bring out the car games. I spy, the licence plate game and word association were just some of the games she brought out to keep the boys from getting bored. It saw them through the next few hours, but shortly after they crossed the Oklahoma state line, she could tell they were getting fidgety.
With Gordon in his car seat and John on his booster seat, Virgil was sandwiched between them, and despite him insisting he was fine with it, Sally knew he would be wanting to stretch his legs. Besides, it was nearing lunchtime, so Sally made the call that it was time for some food and fresh air.
She pulled into the next diner she saw, and the boys' enthusiasm at getting food was a feeling Sally shared.
"Alright, boys, go to the toilet, and then we can eat." She ushered them towards the diner's bathroom. "And make sure you wash your hands."
"Yes, grandma," was uttered across the three of them, before they disappeared into the bathroom.
Hands washed and bellies grumbling, the four of them sat at a booth next to a window.
"What can I get for you guys?" The waitress asked as she came over to their table with a smile and a notepad.
"Pancakes, please!" Gordon squealed.
"Can I have waffles?" Virgil asked, and Sally nodded, before she turned to John.
"John?"
"Waffles too, please."
"Make that two waffles and two pancakes then." Sally smiled at the waitress. "And can I get a coffee and some water for these guys?"
"Yep, sure! I'll get your drinks for you now and then your food will be with you shortly," the waitress said as she wrote down their order on her pad.
Less than an hour later they were on the road again. Now they were all hyped up on sugar, the boys were full of energy in the back of the car, so they were back to playing car games, except for John who was back to his book. And when the games grew repetitive, Sally turned on her showtunes playlist.
They were in the middle of singing their hearts out to the opening number of one of Sally's favourite musicals, when the song was cut off by her phone ringing.
"Hello?" Sally said as the call connected.
"Hey mom. How's it all going?" Jeff's voice sounded gravelly, and Sally suspected he'd just woken from a nap.
"Dad!" The boys called from the back as they heard their dad's voice.
"Hi, boys," Jeff said with a chuckle, which led to a coughing fit that Sally could tell he was trying to stifle.
"It's all going great," Sally answered his question. "We'll be coming up on the Texas border in a little over an hour."
"Are the boys behaving?"
"Hmm, I'm not sure. Are you boys behaving back there?" Sally sent a look into the rearview mirror.
"Yes!" Virgil nodded vigorously even though Jeff couldn't see him.
"Yes, daddy, we promise," Gordon added.
"Son, I've got everything handled. There's no need to worry. Instead, you should be focusing on resting." It was quite unfortunate that Jeff couldn't see her, because she could always get him to listen by just sending him a certain look that would make him feel like a kid again. Alas, she would have to hope just her words were enough. "Go look after yourself and the rest of your family who need you more right now. We're all good here."
"Fine," Jeff grumbled reluctantly, and then added in a louder voice so the boys could hear. "Love you boys. Have fun with your great aunts."
"Send my love to Lucy and the boys. Remember I brought over some soup that's in the fridge. I'll call you tonight."
"Thanks, mom. See you in a few days."
"Bye, dad!"
A moment later, the call ended, and it was just the four of them again.
At some point, Sally brought out the snacks, and it saw them through passing the Texas state line. However, the long journey and early start was clearly getting to the boys, as throughout the day their energy died down and they grew quieter, and the food could only keep them energised for so long.
They eventually stopped for dinner, at a diner not too different from where they had lunch. They all shared a pizza between them, whilst an exhausted Gordon curled up in the booth next to Sally, fast asleep with his head on her lap.
It was a trudge back to the car, all of them feeling the effects of the long drive. Sally carried Gordon as he had barely woken up, but he did stir slightly as she placed him in his car seat.
"Are we there yet?" He mumbled.
"Not yet, sweetie." Sally smiled affectionately as she kissed him lightly on the forehead, and then closed the car door as his eyes fluttered shut once more.
Virgil and John soon joined their brother and drifted off to sleep, and Sally drove in silence for the last couple of hours.
Eventually, they reached the motel she had been planning on staying at. Her sister's house was only an hour away now, but it was too late and she didn't want to turn up with three tired, cranky boys. It was better to leave it to the morning once they were all rested and up for another full-on day.
Whilst the boys got ready for bed, Sally called Jeff, this time with the hologram on so the boys could see him, and so he could see they had survived the day in her care. They seemed to light up when they saw him, and they used the last of their energy to say goodnight to him, their mom, and even Scott who made a brief appearance on the call.
When the call was over, they got into bed, and were all asleep within minutes. The three of them shared one double bed, Gordon in the middle with his older brothers on either side of him, and Sally took the other bed in the room. She hoped that they were all tired enough that they would sleep through the night, and wouldn't wake up complaining that someone was kicking them or stealing the sheets. Sally did not want to have to deal with that when she was just as exhausted.
Which was why, once she was sure the boys were all asleep, she didn't hesitate to climb into her own bed. It didn't take her long at all to join her grandsons in dreamland, exhausted but ready to start it all again tomorrow.
