Chapter 12
It was a rather surprised class that congratulated Shoji and Hagakure for a surprise win when they four teens returned to the observation room. All Might smiled brightly at them all, "Well done, all of you." He looked at the winning pair, "Though, I believe you should explain to the rest of the students how you came to win."
Hagakure, once more in her 'costume,' jumped up and down while clapping her gloved hands, "Oh! It was brilliant! Shoji-kun was able to track the villains down pretty easily since they were making lots of noise. We didn't know what to expect so when we got close he listened at the door for a bit. Then he asked me to open it since they weren't close and wouldn't be able to see me so I could pull back easy. When he saw how the room was arranged he explained the plan! He would go in as a distraction since he could climb easily and avoid the floor. While he had them distracted and focused on him, I was to slowly and carefully slide my way to the bomb! No one saw a thing while looking at Shoji-kun so I got to the bomb easy!"
Everyone let out little sounds of acknowledgment as the explanation filled in the missing pieces. No one had seen the little movements of the tape traps or slide marks on the floor as Hagakure slipped about unnoticed thanks to her Quirk and Shoji making a big showy distraction. All Might had a large bright smile as he congratulated the pair, "Very well done! A wonderful use of both of your skills." He swept his gaze over the other students, "Can anyone tell me who the MVP of the trial was?"
Momo immediately threw her hand into the air and answered, "Shoji-san was the MVP. He not only found the opponents, but he came up with a valid plan that made excellent use of not only his own Quirk but Hagakure-san's as well, then provided a distraction that managed to take down Hanta-san. While Mina-san and Hanta-san used their Quirks in a logical manner, they failed to account for a way to give themselves some mobility. They may have built a trap that would catch many people, but they also locked themselves inside of it."
All Might looked a little startled while Momo stood proud in front of the surprised looks of most of the class. Kenichi just looked a bit proud of his little sister. All Might coughed into his hand, "Yes! Well done! The MVP for this match is indeed, Shoji-shonen!"
Moving on quickly, as the police still hadn't arrived. Not that they were expected to. It was a non-emergency situation so taking a little bit to arrive wasn't going to change anything. All Might selected the next match up, "Heroes, Team B! Villains, Team F!"
Kenichi looked at the heroes, Ida and Uraraka, then over to the villains, Jiro and Asui. He couldn't help thinking that this would be another interesting match up. Both Ida and Uraraka were melee fighters due to their Quirks. Ida mostly through speed powered kicks, while Uraraka required touching someone with all of her fingers to activate her Quirk. Meanwhile Jiro was a pretty dedicated ranged fighter through her Quirk combined with speakers to send out sound wave attacks and Asui was a more middle range fighter being able to go into melee but also fight at a medium range with her tongue.
The two teams left the observation room with their gear and were led to yet another building. It would take far too long to clean up the mess Mina and Sero had made with their Quirks. It also put the teams on a more even footing since the villains wouldn't be able to take advantage of anything the last pair of villains left behind.
Shortly after All Might returned, the next match began. Jiro and Asui didn't have much they could do to prepare the area to give themselves and edge. They did, however, move the bomb to a room with only a single entrance so they could funnel their opponents where they wanted.
The match that followed was... anticlimactic. Uraraka had removed the weight of Ida's suit of armor allowing him to move at his full unburdened speed. Once they knew which room the villains were in, it was a simple matter for Ida to charge through all their defenses and tag the bomb thus winning the match. While both Jiro and Asui had launched attacks to try and stop him, they'd failed to hit him due to his speed. They'd made the unfortunate decision to pick a room at the end of a corridor giving him a good running start while Uraraka opened to the door for him.
When they returned, Ida was named the MVP, though in such a short battle it didn't amount to much effort expended on his part. Before the next match could be determined, Kenichi looked at Jiro and asked, "Jiro-san, I can't help but wonder a couple of things. First, why not have the speakers on your legs on your arms instead? Or even as additional ones. It would give you the ability to aim your soundwaves faster by not having to make sure you faced your opponents head on."
Jiro looked surprised at the comment and shrugged with her extended earlobes, "I honestly hadn't thought of it, but that's a great idea! Thanks."
Kenichi nodded, "My other question was, can you plug your jacks into something, like a music player, and hear the music?"
Jiro stared blankly before she retrieved her personal music player, yanked out the headphones, and jammed her earlobe into it. A few seconds later her eyes widened, "Holy crap! Why did I never think to try this before?!"
Kenichi grinned even wider as he put forth the final thing he wanted to ask "Can you transfer the sound to your speakers?"
Jiro's eyes widened in surprise once again before she did just that. The whole class could hear the rock song she was listening to pumping through the speakers on her leg. Before she could make another comment, Kenichi nodded and added, "That's amazing! You should get a hardened music player and preload it with a bunch of emergency messages and instructions that you could amplify and pump out for people to hear. Heck, I bet you could even find ultrasonic or infrasonic sounds to do some interesting things with."
Jiro was speechless as she stared and Kenichi. In just a few minutes he'd added a ton more potential and uses for her Quirk. She felt a bit overwhelmed so she nodded her head, "Thanks."
Jiro quickly found a spot to think about her Quirk while the rest of the class gave Kenichi impressed looks. Momo had a bright and happy smile on her face as she looked between Jiro and Kenichi. She thought the fact he'd only given advice to Jiro so far meant something special. While Kenichi did like Jiro's character, she was just the first student he really felt he could give some advice to. The first match was just all kinds of messed up so he left those students alone. For the second match he didn't really have any advice for the participants on their Quirks. In the third, Ida's was too straight foreword to need advice. Uraraka's he would talk about later with her, and Asui's was pretty straight foreword as well. He'd need more info to give more advice on the Frog Quirk.
With all of that done, All Might clapped his hands together, "Right! Time to move on! Heroes, Team E! Villains, Team J!"
Kenichi gave Momo a quick hug, "Good luck!"
All Might let Momo and Sato Rikido into the building and left Ojiro Mashirao and Kirishima Eijiro outside. Kenichi sighed and shook his head while muttering, "I feel sorry for those guys."
Midoriya and Jiro picked up what he said, though it was Midoriya that asked, "Why? From what I've seen both Ojiro-san and Kirishima-san are strong melee fighters, the same as Sato-san. With Yaoyorozu-san helping him out, the two teams seems pretty evenly matched, maybe the villains a bit on the weaker side."
Kenichi chuckled, "At first blush, maybe. You seem to be forgetting how versatile my little sister's Quirk really is." He gestured to the screen where everyone watched Momo produce two gas masks with air tanks attached, "You see, her Quirk lets her make anything that's not alive." He looked back at Midoriya, "In other words, if she was so inclined, she could make an entire human corpse but she couldn't make a living person. She never would, but through that you can see that she can make more than just objects like hydraulic clamps."
All Might gave the signal to begin as the students turned away from Kenichi to watch the match. Ojiro and Kirishima didn't really have much in the way of utility attached to their Quirks so their only option was to stroll right in and begin their look. They both shone in face to face confrontations so they wanted to force one to win.
It was only once the pair got close to the location of the villain team that Kenichi spoke once more, "Now just think. If my sister could possibly, with enough study and effort, make an entire human being and all of the elements it's composed of, how hard would it be for her to simply flood a sealed room with any number of simple gasses?"
Everyone's eyes widened in realization just as Ojiro and Kirishima burst into the room where a pair of gas mask wearing villains awaited them. Kirishima said something before he began to giggle, then laugh. Ojiro managed to keep some control of himself for a few more steps into the room before he too burst into giggles. From there Momo and Sato quickly restrained the pair. Even before All Might finished declaring the villains the winners, Momo had created to more masks with oxygen tanks while Kenichi smirked, "Nitrous Oxide, laughing gas."
When everyone returned, Kirishima and Ojiro still having the occassional giggling fit as they worked the gas out of their systems, it was pretty clear that Momo was the MVP of their match. As All Might grabbed one of the last two remaining balls to determine which team would be the heroes and which the villains and began, "Heroes, Team..."
The door to the observation room opened and a couple of police men made their way into the room with Detective Tsukauchi Naomasa at the lead with Principal Nezu standing on his shoulder. Before anyone could say anything, Nezu spoke up while eyeballing All Might, "All Might, why wasn't I informed there would be a police presence at my school?"
There was a definite edge to Nezu's voice that sent a shiver down the hero's spine, "Ah, I... forgot in all the... excitement."
Nezu narrowed his eyes at All Might and everyone could see a dangerous glint there, "Perhaps we should step outside with the good detective and you can explain yourself. I'm sure the other officers can keep an eye on your students for the next few minutes."
The students and cops sat in an awkward silence. Though all of the students kept sending furative glances in, a progressively more nervous looking, Bakugo's direction. Everyone knew the police were here for him because of what happened during the battle between him and Midoriya. No one said anything and they all knew that he was in very deep trouble over his actions.
It was only a few minutes before All Might, Naomasa, and Nezu returned to the room. Naomasa looked a bit saddened but mostly determined. Both Nezu and All Might had carefully blank faces. Naomasa took control of the situation by speaking to his fellow officers, "I've gotten a preliminary statement from All Might about the incident. He'll be providing audio visual recordings as evidence. Get quick statements from the other students on the event. I'll question Midoriya-san, the victim."
As he was speaking, the door opened once more and Aizawa-sensei stepped into the room. He got a few glances before stepping into the shadows and quickly getting ignored once more. Naomasa and the other officers split up to do their jobs. Though, contrary to his self assigned task of interviewing Midoriya, Naomasa walked over to Bakugo, "Bakugo Katsuki, please remove your mask and any support items that your costume contains, including your gauntlets, you are under arrest for the attempted murder of Midoriya Izuku."
Bakugo's face went completely blank for just a slit second before it became a rictus of rage. He leaped to his feet, causing every officer and all the Pro Heroes in the room to focus on him like a laser. Bakugo clenched his fists tightly as he yelled with spittle flying from his lips, "I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING WRONG! IT'S JUST USELESS DEKU! WHO GIVES A SHIT ABOUT THAT NERD?!"
He stopped before his rant could go further as he stared at his hands. Kenichi looked over to the side and spotted Aizawa with his eyes practically glowing red as he nullified Bakugo's Quirk. Naomasa quickly addressed his friend, "All Might, please disarm and restrain Bakugo-san for me." He looked meaningfully over at Aizawa as he spoke.
All Might let out a bone weary sigh but complied with Naomasa's request. In a blur of super speed, Bakugo was soon stripped of all of his gear and found his arms tightly handcuffed behind his back. With just a gentle touch, the now nearly catatonic Bakugo fell back into his seat and sat staring at nothing. Occassional mutters of 'Pebble' and 'Quirkless Deku' could be heard. Naomasa shook his head at the sight. It was a sad thing to see such a potentially promising young man throw his entire life down the drain for nothing.
He quickly left Bakugo in the care of All Might and Eraser Head. The young man would be coming with them down to the police station for his interrogation. After they reviewed all the statements they were collecting and the evidence All Might and Nezu would be providing in the recordings. He collected Midoriya and led him slightly off to the side to take his statement.
It didn't surprise Kenichi that Midoriya tried, and failed, to defend Bakugo. Naomasa was very good at his job and while Midoriya might deflect or insist 'he's not that bad,' he also wouldn't flat out lie. It didn't take long for the detective to sus out all the details of the battle and even details of their past interactions. It quickly painted a picture that the detective did not like one bit. When Kenichi heard Naomasa asking which middle school Midoriya had attended with Bakugo, Kenichi had to do his best not to smile or laugh. With that little bit of information, Naomasa would be able to hunt down the students from Midoriya's class and find even more evidence. It was so nice to see the competent police doing their job. Heroes might have made police seem like 'less' but Kenichi knew just how needed the officers were and he appreciated them greatly.
Kenichi's own interview wasn't all that long. A few simple questions to describe the event. He wouldn't need to act as an eye witness, since he could only describe what was on the recordings, but he could point out Bakugo's attempted assault the previous day. It sort of threw Aizawa under the bus for not reporting it or doing more about it, but it was another nail in Bakugo's coffin.
He also tried to avoid throwing All Might under the bus with his decision to not stop the match. He might not like what All Might did but he respected the Pro Hero and didn't want to do anything that might harm him in any way. He wasn't going through all the effort of restoring him to his prime just to turn the public against him! As far as Kenichi was concerned it was a mistake made due to his personal feelings towards Midoriya. It needed to be addressed, just not in the public eye where it could do some real harm.
Kenichi could just see potential headlines like "All Might Ignores Attempted Murder!" or something equally sensational. He only wanted Bakugo to pay for his crimes, no one else.
It didn't take long for the police to finish taking the statements of all the students. There were warnings of possible additional interviews or testimony in court, but no one was too worried about that. Once the police left with a nearly catatonic Bakugo being escorted out in cuffs, All Might clapped his hands to get everyone's attention, "Right, a small delay but we still have plenty of time for the last match."
He quickly retrieved the box to draw the teams, "So, Heroes, Team G! Which leaves Team I as the villains!"
Kenichi placed a hand on his partner, Kaminari's, shoulder as he looked at their competition, Torodoki and Tokoyami. Tokoyami looked interested in the match while Todoroki had a neutral look and didn't seem to care in the least. All Might quickly led them to their assigned building where Kenichi and Kaminari had their bomb. Kenichi looked at Kaminari, "So, your Quirk is all about electricity right?"
Kaminari nodded while lifting his hand and allowing yellow sparks of electricity to jump around his digits, "That's right. Though, if I use too much I short circuit my brain and become useless for a while."
Kenichi looked him over and rubbed his chin, "So, aside from the radio headgear, what other support items you got for your Quirk?"
Kaminari tilted his head in question, "Nothing. I'll just fry them in a single blast! Why?"
Kenichi froze for a moment before groaning. He'd forgotten that Kaminari was kind of a complete idiot for a while. His fighting style consisted letting off as much power as he could and hoping he won. He must have gotten lucky and found a large group of villain bots all together in order to pass the entrance exam.
Shaking it off, Kenichi dug around in his utility pouches until he found what he was looking for, malleable metallic wire. He'd requested it to use as a way to bind both strong opponents and large opponents. It was much easier to carry around a spool of specialty wire he could wrap around their wrists instead of a dozen sizes of cuffs. Metal or plastic cuffs didn't matter too often, but huge opponents like Nomu or Muscular would require much stronger bindings and a couple dozen wraps of the wire would be ten times stronger than any handcuffs.
He held the spool out to Kaminari, "While I didn't specifically request it, this wire is conductive. If you can wrap someone up with a bit you should be able to zap them at range without having to go all out. You should seriously look into support gear that will let you fire aimed shots from range, man."
Kaminari accepted the spool with a raised eyebrow, then shrugged and pocketed it, "Okay. So, you're like super strong right?"
Kenichi looked blandly at Kaminari. He'd explained his Quirk enough at this point. If Kaminari didn't understand it wasn't his fault. So, he replied with, "Something like that. Look, they'll be coming soon. I doubt either of them are pushovers. Todoroki-san seems pretty cocky and has that ice Quirk of his, so here's what I'm thinking. We should split up. I'll stay here to guard the bomb since I'm pretty sure Todoroki-san will do something big, like freeze the whole building, and then just stroll in like he owns the place. Meanwhile, if they do split up you can come from behind and take on Tokoyami-san. If they don't split up, you can let me know and we can pincer them. Sound good?"
Kaminari nodded, "Sounds good. I'll find a spot on the first floor to hide and observe from. I'll let you know what they do."
Kenichi nodded and they split up. Kenichi was almost certain Todoroki would repeat what he did in canon. The anti-social arrogant ass hadn't stuck around yesterday and hadn't sat with anyone at lunch today. That meant all he knew about Kenichi's Quirk was what he witness during the Quirk Assessment Test of Aizawa's. Meaning, not a whole lot.
When the starting horn sounded, Kenichi reached behind his back and pulled his mask forward. He looked over the vicious and somewhat violent looking grin on the lower half and smirked. He really liked All Might, but he was too wholesome sometimes. This was, in a small way, his own twisted tribute to the ever smiling giant. He slipped on the mask just as the temperature plummeted and ice began to coat the walls, floors, and ceiling.
Kenichi cracked his knuckles and ignored the ice. Time to give Todoroki his first wake up call.
