Here's a new story in the making, Reign of the Dragons. In this story, humans and dragons live together in the modern world, after a 10-year war with one another. Everything in the story is all made-up, along with my OCs and the OCs that belong to my friend Leonidas1994/Pyrus-Leonidas. The first chapter of this story is halfway done, so consider this a prologue for it. Sit back and enjoy. And no flames.
Prologue.
Aberfan, Wales; United Kingdoms.
It is the year 2009 as we focus on the coal mining village of Aberfan that was infamous for its terrible disaster in 1966. On the ground were several workers digging at the old site of where the accident had happened all those years ago. The sound of digging equipment could be heard as we turn our attention inside a large tunnel.
Several workers were seen digging, chipping and clearing out the stone of the tunnel and a large grinder was drilling away at the wall.
"Alright boys, this is it. We keep on digging and we're bound to find something other than coal." The manager calls out over the sound of the machinery.
"Let's hope so. My great, great, grandfather lost a lot of friends when this place collapsed." One worker mentioned. "I hope to God we don't have another accident."
"You and everyone else."
It took time and effort to even get permits to reopen the old mine of Aberfan, but it was eventually approved, provided that another accident doesn't happen. As the manager was making his rounds, checking in on everyone's progress and making sure everything was alright, is when one of his employees came up to him.
"Sir, sir!"
He looks over his shoulder as the man stops before him. "What is it?"
"The men at tunnel number 6 said they reached a void zone after drilling through bedrock."
The manager cups his chin. "Alright. Tell them I'll be there as soon as possible and that they're not to do anything else. We don't know what we could've hit."
"Yes sir." The man acknowledged and went to his fellow workers on his boss' orders.
At the site of tunnel 6 two men were looking inside the large hole in the wall the drill punched through. Their lights shining into the darkness.
"Bloody hell!" The first man gasps. "It's dark as the abyss. I can't see the end of it."
"You think we may have found something big, mate? Like a new vein of minerals or whatnot?" His friend questions.
"Who knows. Best take a look around and see for me-self." The first man said while walking into the hole.
"Oye, Chuck I don't think that's a good idea. The boss will have our heads if he finds out."
"Aw, don't be such a milkmaid, Mac. Besides, it's just a quick in-and-out. I'll be back before the boss shows up." Chuck assures his friend and goes deeper into the hole in the wall.
Mac looks over his shoulder nervously as his friend went to explore inside the void area. "Bollocks."
Inside the void zone Chuck was shining his light around, seeing nothing of interest yet as he only saw stalactites and stalagmites. He continued down further into the void when he saw what would be described as puddles. As he walked further in he came upon a much larger chamber of sorts. A very large chamber.
"Bloody hell." He said to himself.
Then the chamber suddenly grew…dim?
Chuck noticed that there was some lighting illuminating the chamber and he heard something. It sounded deep. Almost like…breathing. He slowly lifts his head and flashlight upward which proved to be his fatal mistake as something lunged at him before he could react.
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE WENT INSIDE?!" The manager shouted at Mac who was back against the wall. "You were supposed to keep him from going inside until I arrived!"
"I…I tried to tell him sir but he wouldn't listen! He just went off despite your…"
A loud scream was suddenly heard from within the void, cutting off both men as they looked into the darkness. Those screams were coming from Chuck and they were screams of agony. The screams had suddenly gone silent, leaving everyone in the mine on edge. Then a faint glow was seen from within the void.
"What in the-"
A large stream of fire erupted from the void, bathing both men in flames and an explosion followed.
Everyone screamed in shock and surprise as they either ran or tried to shield themselves from the fire. An alarm rang throughout the mine as the workers all rushed out to escape. Then something else happened. A loud roaring sound was heard as the wall from where the fire came from erupted, sending rocks everywhere. Some of the miners who were still behind looked and saw and felt their hearts almost stopping when they saw…it.
Standing before them…was a dragon. An honest to God, fire breathing dragon!
The dragon had dark green scales, a light shaded underbelly, with two huge wings, a long and powerful tail, feet with sharp looking claws and a long neck with a head with four horns facing back, the ones on the outside were longer than the ones inward. Its snout was long and broad with a few teeth sticking out and a pair of burning yellow eyes that glowed like the sun.
The miners were all gawking at the supposedly mythical creature as it towered over them. Lips pulled back as it snarled before roaring loudly in the mine. This sends the miners in a panic and tried to flee, only for the dragon to unleash a stream of fire at the unfortunate souls that didn't make it.
Outside of the mine the workers were running for their lives while some were helping their friends who were injured or badly burned, several police and fire trucks came with their sirens blaring. That was when a great burst of fire spewed out from the mine as the dragon erupts from the flames and out onto the surface.
The people all stared in awe and horror as the creature stood up and spreads its wings out, roaring into the air as if celebrating its freedom from its underground prison.
The police pulled their guns out and fired at the dragon. This only caught its attention as the bullets did nothing to it but anger it. It roars at them before flapping its wings to fly off as the policemen continue shooting. That was until more fire erupted from the ground and around the mine as several more roars were heard and to the horror of the people, more dragons started flying out from the mine. The air was filled with the sounds of people screaming and dragons roaring as they were splitting up and flying in different directions.
And just like that. Wales were under siege by a swarm of dragons as smoke and fire was filling the air. But this was only a prelude. For a whole new type of war was about to begin.
"For a time man has always believed themselves to be the dominant race, able to conquer any challenge the world has thrown at them even from the ancient past."
Drawings and pictures of humans from the olden times were shown fighting numerous types of creatures and monsters. Creatures that were only thought to be pure myth.
"Man has always triumphed against those that they feared or did not understand or viewed as a terrible blight upon their religion."
The sounds of swords clanging and beasts howling were heard as a wall of flames went by and showed a group of knights facing the deadliest of all creatures… a dragon.
"As the years passed the tales of mythical creatures were no more than legends. Fairy tales told to young children, of brave knights slaying dragons and other monsters."
The images of the ancient times were now of the modern world where people lived out their daily lives as cars drove by, planes flying through the air and people speaking on their phones.
"That is…until the day came when myths weren't myths anymore."
An image was shown with a dragon bursting out from the mine, roaring and spewing fire in the air with other dragons following behind.
"The day…that dragons, creatures that man once believed to be nothing but pure myth, was no longer a myth and has been unleashed upon the modern world."
A map of the United Kingdoms was shown with small patches of fire forming and slowly spreading out. Several dragons were seen flying over the map breathing fire down on the land as jets, helicopters and tanks were heading towards them.
"With their advanced weapons mankind was ready to face this ancient foe. But even with their more powerful weapons…mankind was only bringing more death and destruction."
We see London in chaos as people were running in fear, jets soaring through the air as a swarm of dragons was spreading like a plague. Burning everything in their path.
"Eventually, around the world, more and more dragons rose from the depths of the Earth, scorching the lands and bringing terror across the land."
Across the globe several dragons of different types, shapes and sizes ran rampant as the entire world was about to be engulfed in dragon fire.
"The end of man seemed to be nigh…until an unexpected event happened."
A lone man in his prime with blood red eyes was seen standing before a very large dragon with scales redder than rubies and golden eyes, the beast moves its head towards the man and the man seemed to be conversing with the dragon.
"With the courage and will of a single man, he had made a bond with one of the greater dragons and the two vowed to bring an end to this war."
We see the man and red dragon fly off into the war and both standing before the humans and dragons as if to stop them in their tracks.
"Through their efforts they were able to quell the Dragon-Human War or D-War as it was called and spoke with the world leaders of peace between humans and dragons."
The red eyed man was seen speaking to several leaders of the nations of the world with the red dragon at his side. The leaders seemed hesitant and reluctant about living together with the very creatures that nearly destroyed everything. Until at last they were won over and agreed with the man's proposal.
"However, not all were willing to forget nor forgive the dragons so easily. As a handful of humans were against the ideals of peace and wanted nothing but to exterminate the dragons for destroying their lives."
An illustration of protestors was seen speaking out against those who wish for peace between humans and dragons. Resulting in a severe fracture between the humans who wish for peace and those who wish to destroy all dragons.
"Because of this the remnants from the war were labeled as bandits, criminals, dragon hunters. In order to protect the dragons as well as the peace, a new order was created: the Dragon Guard."
The red eyed man was seen standing alongside a group of humans and dragons as a flag was seen above them. On it was a serpentine dragon facing left with five long spines and smaller ones running down its body.
"In order for the peace to truly remain strong the people had to find a new home where humans and dragons could live in harmony as an example to the world. Fortunately, they found one."
We see a massive and uncharted island just somewhere in the Pacific ocean. It was filled with vast jungles, swamps, deserts and frozen tundras as far as the eye could see. It was a perfect place to call…home.
"With this new island as the symbol of peace between man and dragon, a new city was soon built upon it, becoming the foundation of a new home. A draconic Eden….Draeden."
We now see the island being filled with buildings as small towns, villages and a great city being built at the very heart of the island.
"Now, a new era is born. The era of the dragons has arrived."
To be continued.
