They flew together in silence. Both had so many words for the other that they could hardly decide where to begin. The skies were bright and clear with warm sunlight on their skin and few clouds to block their view. By either unspoken agreement or instinct, the endless ocean below them gave way to land and then the remains of the once-proud city of Nagazora.
Kiana and Mei lingered on the sight for only a moment before they descended onto Senba Academy. The roof of the school building rushed up to meet them as their memories did the same. They gazed over the ledge at the rest of the city surrounding them, once so alive and vibrant, now so silent and still.
"Do you remember the time we came up here to eat lunch together?" Mei said in a quiet voice. "It was just as quiet then. No one else came to bother us."
Kiana smiled. "Which time do you mean? We ate here so many times that I lost count. The food you made for me was always so good that I couldn't think of anything else."
"That's true. How about the time we came here after school to watch the clouds? We would try to see if we could find any that looked like things we recognized."
Kiana looked up at the sky, but it was a clear day. "That too. I saw a gun once, and you found a katana."
"Our favoured weapons of choice," said Mei, smiling.
Kiana pointed to a park visible in the distance. "I remember that's where we first met…"
"So do I," said Mei, gazing at it with her. "I skipped school that day to practice kendo in the park. It was where my father and I sometimes went to practice together. I was so dismissive of you at first…"
Mei was quiet as she reminisced about that moment. Then she felt Kiana place her hand on hers.
"Your classmates bullied you so badly ever since your father was arrested," whispered Kiana. "They did and said so many terrible things to you. I saw it for myself."
Although unbearable at the time, those memories seemed almost trivial in comparison to the hardship Mei had endured since.
"Yes, Kiana. But I'm glad it all happened. Because it was how I met you."
Kiana was not quite sure how to respond to that, so she simply stayed silent and allowed the moments to pass peacefully. There was a gentle breeze and a warm sun. If they closed their eyes, they could almost pretend that Nagazora was alive again.
But Kiana could not pretend for long. She needed the truth. There was a question within her burning as much as the flames she wielded.
"Mei…"
"What is it?" Mei sensed the change in her voice and turned to face her.
"Mei, we've known each other for so many years. But it's only now that we've come this far, so I just have one question. Mei, for how long have you loved me?"
It was the question Mei had prepared herself for during their entire journey here. It was a question she had many answers for and also only one.
"Love is a strange thing, isn't it," Mei began. "The first person in the world I can remember loving was my father, but I'm sure I also loved my mother from what I can remember of her. When I made friends from school for the first time, I loved them as well. The best friend I had in the world was a girl named Hikari. As you know, her name means 'light', but her light went out when she abandoned me. She was never as bright as you are, Kiana."
Mei reached out and took Kiana's hands in her own.
"Kiana, when I realized you were the first true friend in the world I had ever known, I loved you. I loved you as someone who would always make me feel safe. I loved spending every moment with you, and I loved you for who you were. During that time, I loved you as a friend."
Their fingers interlocked with each other.
"On the worst day of my life, when you saved me after I threw myself off this very rooftop, I loved you more than that."
"Mei…how come you never took things further with me after that day?"
Mei frowned. She shook her head. "I wasn't ready. The idea of loving someone as more than a friend…it was completely new to me, and it scared me. And I was still scared of hurting you. The Herrscher inside me might have woken up at any moment…I didn't want to break something as pure as this kind of love. So I hid it within me and forgot about it. When we joined Schicksal, I became too busy working on being a valkyrie to focus on anything else. I was happy the way we were. I didn't want to risk what we had by taking a step like that…"
The answer did not come as a surprise to Kiana, so she did not linger on it. "I understand, Mei. I was always ready for you whenever you were ready, and now you are…"
When Kiana started to lean forward, Mei realized what she wanted to do. But it was not right.
"No, Kiana."
"Mei?"
Mei let her go and stepped back. "Kiana, before we can fully accept how we feel for each other, we need to come to terms with something very important first."
Kiana did not know what this could mean. To her worry, Mei's voice had become strained again.
"Mei, are you alright?"
"Kiana, I know that you love me as much as I love you."
Kiana slowly nodded. "I do. I love you, Mei, and I'm so happy that you feel the same for me. So why do you look so worried?"
"But Kiana, I also know that I am not the only one you love."
Kiana froze. She should have known it would come to this. "Mei, I know what you mean, but - "
"Those portal experiments that Seele and Bronya mentioned you were participating in. They're to bring him back, aren't they."
"Seele and Bronya? You met them?" Kiana was glad to learn of this, but their reunion had suddenly taken an all too familiar turn.

Kiana was ready. She was herself again. It was time for her to reunite with all who missed her dearly. The time she spent gradually healing in Soukai City was used well. She could not have done it without him. She was so grateful for him, and she would cherish the moments they shared together for the rest of her life.
She had asked him to contact Raiden Mei and tell her that she was waiting for her in Nagazora. Then she took flight.
Mei found her on the rooftop of a building at Senba Academy. She recognized the place. There was no way she could ever forget it.
They had embraced. They had sobbed. They had felt happiness they thought they would never feel again. They had said so much to each other, so Mei inevitably asked how Kiana had spent the last few months apart from her,
As soon as Mei finished asking the question, she noticed a barely perceptible shift in Kiana's demeanour.
"Mei…I wasn't alone…"
"You were with him. Our captain. He contacted me and told me I would find you here. He rescued you after you fell from the sky. I saw it." Mei thought she saw a hint of red on Kiana's face but quickly dismissed it as part of her imagination. "Did he treat you well in Soukai City?" Mei asked.
"He did. I'm here now because of what he did for me."
Mei smiled. She was happy to hear that Kiana had someone looking after her. "I'm happy to hear that. He was always that kind of person. I'm glad he was there for you."
"Yes, he was."
Kiana could not hide the blush on her face anymore. Mei frowned. "Kiana, are you feeling alright? Your face is so red. Come back to the field base Tesla set up, we have - "
"Mei, I can't keep this a secret from you anymore. You have a right to know. It's about Johann. We were living together in Soukai City. I hadn't been this close to anyone for so long. I was still so scared and so vulnerable, and…one day, we finally realized how we felt for each other…"
The passion in Kiana's voice did strange things to Mei. "What did you do?" she asked in a flat tone.
Kiana could no longer meet her eyes. "We were running late for my job, so we took the subway. We were standing close to each other, and…we kissed. It just happened. It had been so long since I could feel so safe and happy. He made me feel so safe, so protected, so loved. He would do anything for me, and he did. I wasn't sure how to feel about him…my heart already belonged to you, but it didn't feel like I was doing anything wrong when I accepted that I loved him, too. Later that night in the hotel we were staying in, we…we…took it even further, and - "
Mei put her trembling hand on Kiana's shoulder. "Kiana, it's okay. You don't need to say anything more. I don't judge you or him for doing what you needed to make yourself feel better."
But it was a lie to them both.

"I met them at a lake," Mei answered. "They told me about experiments with your void powers you were conducting with the scientists at Anti-Entropy. I was there when Otto died. I was there when he told us the truth that he had sent Johann into the new world they created. If you're trying to get your portals to work on something, then it can only be to bring him back."
"You're right. That's exactly what we're working toward. Tesla, Einstein, Nagamitsu, Fu Hua, and I have all been working our hardest to bring him home. But we haven't had any progress after weeks of failing…"
Before Kiana's mood could worsen, Mei took her in another hug. "You must love him so much. He's done so much for you," she whispered into Kiana's ear.
Kiana could only nod, not daring to speak. She remembered saying too much during their last visit here.
"Kiana, it's okay. I'm not who I used to be. I've had to grow up since then, so now I know that I love him, too…"
"You do?" Kiana was unsure how to feel. It was obvious that Mei and their captain were close, but not to this degree.
Mei shut her eyes. "I do. He may not have been the one to save me after I attempted suicide or the first person in the world I could feel truly safe with, but he was still always there for me no matter what. He made me feel safe, and he made me feel appreciated for who I was. He comforted me when I was scared and protected me when I was in danger. I treated him horribly when we first met, but then I realized that he was someone I could always rely on. And when we went back to the ruins of St. Freya together, he gave me the strength to continue fighting…"
Mei pulled out a worn and creased photograph and showed it to Kiana. It was Mei standing before a breathtaking sunset, Mei with a genuine smile and the strength to carry on.
Kiana looked at it before returning it. "Mei…I'm so happy he was there for you after…after Sirin woke in me. He did everything he could to make things right again and to make us happy, didn't he?"
Mei took one more look at the photograph before putting it away. "You still don't know why I lashed out at you so much when we fought here. It was because my emotions were still unstable. I hadn't come to terms with my feelings for either of you. When you told me that you had slept together, I held my emotions in, but when we had to fight…I'm sorry, Kiana. I love both of you so much. It was too much for me. Can you forgive me for hurting you so much?"
Forgiveness was a strange concept. Though Kiana had already forgiven Mei's actions long ago, having to forgive her directly was a more difficult task than she expected. Kiana still remembered the intensity of their battle in the skies above Nagazora. A conflict between Herrschers was never an event without collateral damage. Each blow she took brought her closer to unconsciousness. The pain strengthened her determination to keep Mei from leaving her and joining the mysterious and possibly malevolent organization known only to her as World Serpent until she could take no more.
"Mei, I know you felt that you needed to join World Serpent in exchange for their assistance in saving me. You believed what you were doing was right, even though you knew you would need to fight me to keep you from leaving me again. And I know that love can make people do crazy things…so just tell me…was joining World Serpent worth it? Did you learn what you wanted from them? Tell me everything you learned, and then I'll forgive you. I promise."
Mei tightened her embrace around her. Kiana realized she was crying. She embraced her back.
"I'll tell you everything that happened to me at World Serpent, Kiana. Everything. You deserve to know."
Over the next hour, Mei told her everything she had seen and learned during her time at World Serpent, including her struggles against the Herrschers of Ice, Stars, and Rimestar, her journey into the Elysian Realm and all the personalities she had met within, Kevin Kaslana ordering her to put a stop to Otto's plot to reset the world, her inner conflict the entire time, and more. Kiana listened patiently and intently, amazed at how much Mei had accomplished in such a short time.
When Mei finished her account with a description of her final day in the Elysian Realm, she fell silent, having said everything she could say. Kiana was likewise at a loss of words.
"All I have to say is that you weren't moping around in misery like you said you were. You got so much done! You should be proud of yourself, Mei. I definitely am," Kiana finally said.
"Thank you…"
"Mei, I forgive you. We're going to be okay now. We're together again, and nothing can bring us apart, not even Kevin."
Mei shook her head. "You don't know Kevin. He…he's the kind of man who doesn't care for words like that. He will do whatever he thinks is necessary for the greater good, and he scares me because of this."
Kiana knew little of the man who called himself a Kaslana, making him the progenitor of her entire house and therefore her distant ancestor. What she did know of him from Bronya and Mei's personal accounts chilled her to the bone. He was the one ultimately responsible for orchestrating the plot to detonate a Honkai-powered bomb in Arc City, which would have led to the extinction of nearly all of its people. Kiana had put a stop to it at the cost of nearly her life, but for the same reason, she was able to spend happy months in Soukai City with the one who rescued her.
Kiana's expression was one of determination as she said, "Then we'd better tell everyone back at Schicksal and Anti-Entropy. You revealed a lot of things they ought to know. We should head back now."
To Kiana's surprise, Mei seemed hesitant.
"Kiana, if I do that, I'll be a traitor to World Serpent. I would never be allowed to return. The allies I once worked with will become my enemies."
"And so what if they do? You never truly wanted to join them in the first place. You were never going to stay with them forever. They're mass murderers. Besides, he doesn't have to know."
"No, Kiana. It's…it's the Elysian Realm. I feel that I'm not done with it yet. I haven't learned everything I can from it. My journey into it isn't over."
Kiana did not care for this Elysian Realm. "Mei, you can worry about this later. For now, let's just head back. Everyone's waiting for you."
Mei slowly agreed. Then she reached up to Kiana's face and gently held her in her hands.
Kiana smiled. "I was waiting so long for you to do that…" she whispered. She returned the gesture.
"I waited too long, Kiana. But it doesn't matter. We're together again."
They closed their eyes, leaned in, and kissed passionately, merging their futures together as one.

When they returned to the front gates of Anti-Entropy's base, they were surprised to see a large gathering of people waiting for them.
"Kiana, did you ask them to greet us here?"
"No, I didn't…"
They caught sight of Bronya and Seele waving at them from the ground, who were soon joined by most of the rest. Bronya ran forward and greeted them with a warm smile as Kiana and Mei descended to the ground, still holding each other's hands.
"Welcome back. It's good to see you together again."
"Thank you, Bronya," said Mei. "It's good to see you again and everyone else."
"Welcome back, Kiana and Mei," Seele cheerfully said. "I'm so happy for both of you."
"It means a lot to hear this from you, Seele," said Kiana and Mei. Then Kiana turned to Bronya. "Bronya, was it you who told everyone else about us?" she asked in a slightly annoyed voice.
"Not at all. This base possesses some of the most advanced Honkai detection systems in the world. We knew Mei was approaching the moment she came into range," said the male voice approaching them.
The voice was deep, calm, and familiar. It was the voice Mei feared she had forgotten. She turned to its owner to see an imposing man with hair and eyes as violet as her own.
"F-father?"
Raiden Ryoma gave his daughter a proud look. "Welcome back, Mei. You've grown so much."
Mei released Kiana's hand and stepped into her father's loving embrace, something they could not do for many years. Father and daughter sobbed as one as they finally reunited.
"Father, I missed you so much…I worried for you every day…"
"I know, Mei. I worried for you as well, but I knew your strength would always keep you safe."
Kiana happily watched them. Then she noticed the others also in the group with them. Aside from Seele, she also counted Fu Hua, Rozaliya, and Liliya. Theresa and Bianka were not currently present at the base; they were busy travelling to Schicksal's various holdings across the world using the Hyperion and consolidating Theresa's newfound power. As they had feared, various members of Schicksal, some still loyal to Otto and believing that Theresa had him assassinated, others with their own reasons, opposed Theresa as the new Overseer. Some had made plots to overthrow her. All those responsible were dealt with accordingly.
"I'm glad to see the two of you happy again," said the Azure Empyrea.
"Thank you so much, Fu Hua. It means a lot to hear that from you," Kiana replied.
"Both of us are," Seele said. Then her eyes turned red.
I know little about this 'Raiden Mei' aside from what I heard in passing conversation, but if she is a friend, she is welcome in Seele's presence.
Kiana laughed. "Thank you, Seele. Both of you."
Rozaliya walked up to Mei and said, "We've heard so much about you, Mei! Can we please see the horns on your head just like ours? I don't see any right now…"
"Rozaliya Idiotka, what kind of question is that…" admonished Liliya.
Mei turned to the twins. "You heard right. Watch carefully."
To the amazement of the Olenyevas, two red horns materialized on Mei's head.
"Wow! They look awesome!" exclaimed Rozaliya, whose tail started twitching in excitement.
"I'm afraid that I don't have a tail, although Kurikara does," Mei said, smiling.
"Kurikara? Who's that?" they asked.
"My dragon."
The twins buried Mei under a torrent of excited questions about her dragon before they were finally convinced to give her some room to herself. Then she and Ryoma walked back to Kiana. He gave Kiana a stern look. She subconsciously prepared herself for a confrontation. It was not the first time she had met Mei's father, but it was the first time she had met him with Mei's hand holding hers.
To her relief, he only smiled at her. "Miss Kaslana, I'm glad Mei has you watching over her. I trust you to always keep her happy."
Kiana saluted him and promised in a determined voice, "I will, Mr. Raiden! Mei is safe with me. You don't need to worry about her anymore!"
"Yes, father. Kiana has always been there for me. I trust her with my life." Then Mei stepped between everyone and gained their attention. "Everyone, I'm glad to come home to all of you. I'm sorry it took this long. But our reunions can wait for later. Right now, I have many important things you and your leaders ought to know."
"Mei has already told me everything, but I think it's time we convened for a meeting," said Kiana. "Theresa and Bianka should attend via hologram, too."
Ryoma held a finger to his earpiece. "The Sovereign and Doctors Tesla and Einstein concur. Overseer Theresa and Valkyrie Ataegina have already been contacted. The briefing room in the base is where we'll convene. Mei, Kiana, walk with me."
He turned to the front gates of the base and walked through them. Kiana and Mei walked beside him, their hands intertwined.

The next week was an eventful one. In particular, Mei's revelation that both Schicksal and Anti-Entropy were infested with World Serpent spies and saboteurs sparked a clandestine hunt to find and eliminate them. So far, this proved to be a daunting task. The enemy agents were well-trained and knew they were being hunted. They knew how to remain hidden and how to disappear. Some were likely to not even be human.
Kiana and Mei did not trouble themselves with rooting out spies and moles, leaving it to those with more expertise in such matters, like Rita. They had offered to help before being told by Theresa that they should focus on their duties and each other instead. They therefore spent their time bonding and making up for all the time they had lost. Though they were truly happy being with each other, the many issues that loomed over them cast a shadow over their reunion.
They were in the laboratory that Kiana had now memorized to the last detail after spending so much time in it. Mei watched as Kiana focused all of her attention on creating a link to the branch parallel to their world. With her were Fu Hua, Bronya, and Seele. Also present were Welt Yang and the three scientists working with Kiana.
Kiana breathed slowly and evenly as she followed Fu Hua's instructions to calm her mind. Probing into the Imaginary Tree was a potentially dangerous undertaking. Fu Hua hoped to reduce that risk.
Kiana could see the many worlds more clearly now. Some were similar to her own. Others were alien. None were the world she needed.
Suddenly, she saw, in the briefest of flashes, a man flying through the air to some unseen destination. Kiana's elation was such that she immediately lost control of her power and was forced out of the Imaginary Tree and back into her world.
She screamed and fell to the ground.
"Kiana! Are you alright?" Mei cried out, rushing over to her and cradling her in her arms. Bronya and Seele ran up to her next and knelt beside her, concerned.
"Kiana, what happened?" they asked.
Tears leaked from below Kiana's closed eyes. Whether they were of joy or despair, she did not know. "I saw him."
"You saw Mr. Apocalypse?" asked Welt. He was a dear friend of their captain and wished to see him returned to him as much as they did.
"It was just for the briefest moment, but I know it was him. And I lost him. Because I couldn't control myself…"
"Kiana, how was he doing?" Bronya asked. Her eyes were wide and hopeful.
"He was flying somewhere. That's all I saw."
"Good. That means he's alive and still has his powers to protect him. You can put your worries about him to rest now."
"Kiana, don't feel bad about losing control of yourself. You were happy to finally see him again after so many weeks of effort," Mei said to comfort her. She was just as glad to hear the news of his safety.
"But…I lost him as soon as I found him. I lost him again because I was careless. I don't know if I can find him again, and it's all my fault…"
"Kiana, it isn't your fault," said Fu Hua. "You made progress today, progress we haven't seen since we started. If you found him once, you can find him again."
She slowly stood back up and turned away from them.
"Kiana, would you like to try again?" asked Einstein.
"No. Not today. I need some rest and some time alone." Kiana walked out of the laboratory without another word, leaving the others worried for her.
"I'm going after her," said Mei. "I need to make her feel better."
Bronya hugged her. "Please be there for her."
Mei rushed out of the laboratory in time to see Kiana turn the corner down the corridor. She ran up to her, calling out her name.
"Kiana, I'm always here for you. You know that." Kiana stopped. Mei caught up to her and embraced her from behind. "Kiana, you did well. You shouldn't blame yourself, and you didn't fail. Now you know what to look for, and now you know your efforts weren't in vain. He's alive, and you'll find a way to bring him home…"
To Mei's relief, she could feel Kiana relaxing in her arms, no longer tense like she would be during battle. "Thank you," Kiana said in a subdued, yet hopeful voice. "Can we go back to our room?"
Mei let her go before taking her hand. She led them through the base to their shared room, which was originally Kiana's before Mei moved in with her. Inside, it was simple but adequate living quarters with one bed, a few tables and desks, an adjoined shower, and little else. Neither of them had many important possessions they could call their own, but this did not matter as long as they had each other.
Mei walked Kiana to their bed before sitting down beside her. She reached up and gently ran a hand through her silver hair with red streaks like fire.
Kiana's breathing calmed. "I always feel so much better when you do that."
"Kiana, I'll do anything to make you feel better. Anything."
"I know. Thank you."
As Mei continued to caress Kiana's hair, she started feeling more protective of her than she ever had. Seeing Kiana in anguish hurt her in turn. She meant every word about doing anything to make Kiana feel better, but she was unsure what could make her feel better in a situation like this.
So she complimented her instead. "Kiana, you look so beautiful with your hair tied back in a ponytail. I can't believe you almost never wore it like this back in St. Freya."
"I'm glad you like it. I guess I've changed a lot since then. I find that I prefer it like this, too. It doesn't get in the way as much when I'm fighting."
"Mmh. Would you like to do anything, then? We have plenty of books to read here. Or we could train in the simulation chambers. Oh, I'd be happy to cook your favourite meals for you. You must be hungry after that experiment."
Kiana saw the warm compassion in Mei's eyes, and Mei saw it in Kiana's. They moved even closer to each other. Kiana reached up and held Mei's face in her hands. Mei warmly reciprocated the gesture.
Their lips met in a passionate kiss, one they both needed so much. Their lips were warm and soft pressed against each other, They made each other feel better already.
They had shared many kisses since reuniting, but this one was by far their most passionate. Neither resisted when their tongues met, and their kiss deepened even more. Kiana moaned softly, which Mei echoed. Kiana wrapped her arms around Mei, bringing her even closer to her.
Their kiss seemed to last forever. When they finally and reluctantly withdrew, breathing hard, Kiana's face was bright red as she showed Mei a new look in her eyes.
"Mei…I want more…please…"
Kiana saw that very same look in Mei's eyes. It was more than passion. It was desire.
