Archie dove in without hesitation. He swam like a madman trying to find Jughead. He swam with the current knowing it dragged him under. He swam as fast as he could using all of his supernatural strength. After a moment he heard banging on the ice to the left of him a couple of yards away. He swam in that direction and saw something moving. It was Jughead's feet. He grabbed his right leg, noting in his mind that it felt funny and made his way to Jughead's chest.
Archie tried to pull but he wouldn't budge. He felt around to Jug's back and pulled on his shirt, which had gotten caught on a log. He swam the both of them up quickly and punched his way through the ice with one blow.
Betty and Tabitha immediately grabbed Jughead and helped pull him out. Betty checked for a pulse. "He doesn't have a pulse. Archie start compressions, carefully." Archie started compressions. "Tabitha, he needs mouth to mouth." Tabitha looked at Betty but didn't move. "Tabitha he needs you, you- never mind." And Betty jumped in.
With that they started CPR. After what felt like hours, but what was only a couple of minutes, he still hadn't started breathing. "He's still not breathing!" Tabitha cried clutching his left leg. She was scared out of her mind. The thought that Jughead had accidentally heard not that long ago, popped into her head again. 'What if I lose him?'
As if he had heard her, Jughead coughed the water out of his lungs and Tabitha moved closer to him, Archie moving to kneel next to Betty. "Jug? Jug? Hey, it's me. You're okay! You're gonna be okay!" She held him close and clung to him. But he didn't stay awake long. His eyes closed and he was unconscious again.
Betty checked his pulse, "He's alive. But he's needs a hospital right now. The ambulance should be here any minute." Betty took off her jacket, rolled it up and placed it under Jug's head. "I called it from the house." As if on cue, sirens were heard in the near distance.
Sitting in the waiting room at the hospital was all too familiar for the heroes of Riverdale. Archie, Betty, and Tabitha sat quietly still reeling from the events that just took place. Tabitha was getting antsy, fidgeting in her seat. Betty was leaning against Archie, all three afraid for their friend.
Veronica walked in and greeted them. She sat down next to Tabitha. "How is he?" She asked sincerely worried.
"We don't know yet. The doctor hasn't been out to talk to us yet. Which is really unnerving." Betty replied clearly upset.
"So, Percival got to him? How? What about his powers?" Veronica asked confused.
"I don't know. I don't know how he was able to do it. Maybe because he caught Jug off guard, somewhere he was safe." Betty suggested.
"He was going after Jug either way. Doesn't matter if he was at home or anywhere else. He was waiting for a moment of weakness. Jughead was up late, he was tired, and his guard was down." Archie said standing up. Betty could tell he was getting heated.
"Archie.." Betty began taking his hand.
"We should've known he was gonna go after Jug. I should've known. Jughead is the only one with powers that could rival his own. I should've been protecting him. Just like I should've made him see someone after the explosion." Archie sat back down and put his head in his hands. Betty grabbed his shoulders.
"It's not your fault, Arch." Betty urged.
"She's right, Archie." Tabitha said as tears clouded her vision. "It's my fault." Everyone looked at her.
"What do you talking about, Tabitha?" Betty asked. "How is this your fault?" She asked.
"You know I can time jump in my mind." The others nodded. "I tried every possible future against Percival." Tabitha felt tears streaming down her cheeks now.
"Tabitha?" Betty asked weary of what she was about to say.
"In all but 2 out of 1,084... Jughead dies." Tabitha closed her eyes. Archie dropped his head in his hands again, Betty squeezed his shoulder, and Veronica's face was of pure shock.
"Are- are you sure?" Veronica asked. Tabitha nodded.
"I tried everything I could think of and then more. I knew something was going to happen and I could've stopped it." Tabitha said, her voice cracking. Betty moved to sit next to her and hugged her.
"There was no way you could've known when or how he'd go after Jughead. None of this is on you. None of it!" Betty tried to assure her.
Just then a doctor walked out of the double doors. Everyone stood hoping and maybe even praying that they would get good news. "Are you the family of Forsyth-"
"Jughead. His name is Jughead." Archie corrected quickly. The doctor nodded.
"I'm Dr. Kane. I treated Jughead when he came in. He suffered a hairline fracture, likely from hitting a rock from the force of the current. He has several broken ribs, and a broken leg. Which, luckily most of them were clean breaks." Dr. Kane explained.
"Wait, most of them?" Tabitha asked her worry making her angry.
"Yes, one of his broken ribs punctured his lung. We were able to repair the damage during surgery. With the severity of his injuries though, most notably his hairline fracture, it was best we put Jughead into an induced coma; which will allow his body to heal, and it will be easier for him when he wakes up." Betty and Veronica supported Tabitha who had wrapped her arms around herself.
"Can we see him?" Archie asked.
"It's not ideal," Dr. Kane started, but Betty flashed him her FBI badge. "But, I think we can make an exception." He nodded. "If you'll follow me." The four of them followed the doctor to Jughead's room.
No matter how much they've seen, how much they've been through, nothing could've prepared them for what they'll see next.
