"Valentine's Day…"

Tsukune's voice was filled with dismal sorrow as he murmured to himself what day of the year it was. It had been on his mind for the last two weeks, causing him to have sleepless nights and anxiety. Such worry had reached its peak on the arrival of the special day. He glanced around at the young couples that filled the grounds of Yokai Academy, exchanging gifts and kisses. They all appeared to be very happy - in contrast to how gloomy he was feeling.

"Happy Valentine's Day?" he muttered with a shake of his head. "Yeah, right. It won't be happy for me - and worse, it won't be for Moka."

Tsukune had spent the last fortnight trying to decide what to give to his vampire girlfriend. He had thought long and hard, trying to think of something special as a present to Moka on this very special day. He had thought at first about giving her flowers and chocolates, but seeing as those were what most girls received from their boyfriends, he had tried to think of something more unique. Something that only Moka would like which she would know would have come only from him.

No matter how hard Tsukune thought, however, he couldn't think of a single special thing to give to his beloved girlfriend.

The sole human in the academy for monsters lowered his gaze as he scuffed his shoes on the school grounds. He felt awful for failing to find a Valentine's gift for Moka. Never had he felt so ashamed of himself. He was certain he had let down the one he loved.

Tsukune closed his brown eyes. He was not looking forward to seeing how disappointed Moka would feel when he told her he had no present for her to mark this special day. He was certain he had failed her as a boyfriend.

"Tsukune!"

The boy's eyes burst open, overflowing with dread over hearing a familiar cheerful voice call him. He peered over his shoulder, a nervous smile on his face when he saw who was happily running towards him.

"Moka…"

The young vampire sprinted towards her human boyfriend. She stopped upon reaching him to send the bright look on her face towards him. Her teal eyes twinkled with delight over seeing the one she adored.

"I've been looking all over the school for you," she exclaimed cheerfully.

"Oh, have you?" Tsukune asked, a knot tightening in his stomach.

"Uh-huh! I wanted to give you this!" Moka held up a shiny blue gift bag, holding it out towards the boy in front of her. "Happy Valentine's Day, Tsukune!"

Turning around to face Moka, Tsukune took the gift bag from her. He looked down at it as he held it in his hands. All of his guilt worsened. She had managed to get a present him - and he had gotten absolutely nothing for her. What kind of boyfriend was he?

"Thanks, Moka…" Tsukune held the same smile that was on his face as he directed it towards the young vampire. "I really don't deserve you…"

Moka's peppy expression vanished. Concern filled her face upon hearing what Tsukune had said to her. She could tell at once that something was wrong with the human she was close to.

"What's the matter, Tsukune?" she asked softly. "Why'd you say that? Is everything okay?"

"No…" Tsukune dropped his gaze as his eyes squeezed shut. "Everything is not okay… I'm sorry… I'm so sorry…"

"Tsukune…" Moka frowned. "What are you talking about? What are you sorry for?"

"I'm the worst!" Tsukune closed his eyes. "The absolute worst!"

Hearing her beloved boyfriend berating himself made Moka upset. She didn't like to hear her first friend in the monster world speak so negatively of himself. Not willing to stand by and do nothing to comfort him, she placed her hands onto his cheeks, causing him to open his eyes filled with self-hatred.

"What's wrong, Tsukune?" Moka smiled sadly yet assuringly. "You can tell me. What's the matter?"

Tsukune felt worse as he observed the warm, sympathetic look Moka was giving him. She was always so unfailing kind and selfless. A sweet soul like her deserved better than him.

"I…" Unable to look Moka in the eye as he made his confession, Tsukune turned away. "I couldn't get Valentine's Day gift for you, Moka!"

Moka's caring smile disappeared. "A Valentine's Day gift … for me?"

"I tried! I swear I tried!" Tsukune forced himself to face the astonished vampire. "I wanted to get you something more special than flowers or chocolates! I thought as hard as I could for two weeks - but I just couldn't think of anything to give you!"

Moka stared wordlessly.

"I don't blame you if you're mad at me. I'm mad at me too. I'm so awful." The boy lowered his head, angry and disgusted with himself. "I'm sorry, Moka…"

The silence which followed seemed to last an eternity. Tsukune closed his eyes and waited for the sound of Moka's footsteps. He was expecting her to walk away from him in refusal to speak to him. She was sure to resent him for failing to get her a gift for Valentine's Day. He wouldn't at all be surprised if she wanted nothing more to do with him.

"Oh, Tsukune!"

Tsukune opened his eyes. The way Moka had said his name was devoid of any anger or disappointment. He felt her place her finger underneath his chin. She gently lifted his head to get him to face her, surprising the boy when he saw she was once again smiling at him.

"You're not the worst at all! You're the absolute best in the human and monster world!"

"Wha-" Tsukune uttered, staggered by the way Moka had described him after what he had confessed to her.

"Valentine's Day is just one day of the year - and yet you show me love all year around!" Moka beamed brightly. "From the day we met, you've been there for me, giving me the care and friendship I longed for in my childhood. You've never once judged me for being a vampire. You've accepted me for who I am, showing me nothing but kindness and love."

"But-" Tsukune began, but was cut off as Moka lifted her finger from his chin to his lips.

"Don't ever call yourself awful, Tsukune, because you're far from it." The girl gently pulled the boy into a tight embrace, resting her head onto his shoulder. "You're the absolute best - and I love you."

Tsukune's heart raced over the last three words Moka said. It was surreal for him to believe that she felt the same way for him as he did for her. He put the gift down onto the ground to wind his arms around her. He held her tightly in his arms he hugged her back. For the first time that Valentine's Day, a genuine happy smile found its way to the human boy's face.

"I love you too, Moka…"

Moka's smile softened over hearing her beloved boyfriend's sincere words towards her. She took a moment to relish being held in his arms before pulling away to lock her gaze with his.

"Oh, Tsukune…"

"Oh, Moka…"

The pair's voices were filled with their love for one another as they said their names.

"Oh, Tsukune…"

"Oh, Moka…"

They rested their foreheads together, redness forming on their cheeks as they peered adoring into one another's eyes.

"Oh, Tsukune…"

"Oh, Moka…"

Having been assured by his girlfriend that not even his failure to find her a present could end her love for him, Tsukune sighed happily. He was just readying his lips to kiss Moka - when her voice suddenly came out of hers a little louder.

"Besides, you actually do have the perfect Valentine's Day gift for me! Something I like far more than flowers and chocolates which could only come from you!"

"I have? Really? What would that gift I've got for you be?"

Tsukune frowned for a moment as he tried to think of what Moka was referring to - before his eyes widened in shock when the answer suddenly hit him.

"Wait… You don't mean-"

"I'm sorry, Tsukune!" Moka apologised, placing her hands onto her boyfriend's cheeks as she gave him a desirous smile. "But I am a vampire!"

Before Tsukune could stop her, Moka leaned forward and sank her sharp fangs into his neck, piercing his flesh before sighing in content as she proceeded to happily suck his blood.

"Ahhhhh…"

"ARRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!"
