Chapter 1 – secrets of the cul-de-sac
Eddward
The air this Friday morning was warm with a slight breeze in the trees, and the sun was slowly climbing the sky. It was turning out to be a fantastic summer day. Double D and Eddy sat on Ed's porch while they talked a little about what they were going to do this weekend and idly tapped around on their phones. Last Monday, Becky (Eddy's new girlfriend) went with her family to her relatives in Colorado and was going to stay there for a week, and Kevin was going to go with Nazz to the mall during the day to shop. She and May had originally decided to go together today, but May had some things to do at home so Nazz asked Kevin instead who reluctantly agreed… she had actually been pestering him, and finally he couldn't say no anymore because she pointed out that they hadn't hung out by themselves all summer, and he thought it might be nice to have some alone time with her this weekend as well. Especially considering that after the summer both were going to…
Never mind.
So now Double D and Eddy were waiting for Ed to wake up so that the three of them could go to the lake and fish for two days, something they had done every summer so far. Even though there were only four weeks of summer vacation left, this would be the first time of the season for the friends as they had all been busy with their respective partners for several weeks now. It was strange, when Eddward thought about it, how little time he had actually spent with his very best friends. Were they growing apart? No, it was dumb of him to think like that. Life changes, but friendship would always remain. He felt that it would be nice to hang out with just Ed and Eddy today, but he would still miss Kevin. As usual.
"Someone's coming." Eddy said suddenly from his chair and they both turned to the glass door that gave view to the Hills' kitchen. It was Sarah, Ed's little sister, and Edd and Eddy waved at her when she spotted them.
She was a little surprised at first, but then went over and opened the door. "Hey, does Ed know you guys are here?"
"No." Eddy answered and checked the time on his phone. "But he usually wakes up around this time." It was nearly ten o'clock.
"He'll probably sleep even longer; he and May were arguing all night. They didn't quiet down until four this morning."
"Do you know what they were fighting about?" Eddy asked, but Sarah shook her head.
"Did May sleep over?" Edd asked.
Sarah shrugged. "I don't know, but I think so. You can go downstairs and wake him up."
"Do we dare to?" Eddy grinned at Edd. "Imagine if we get into his room, and Ed is on top of the covers."
Eddward giggled and shivered a little at the same time. The times Ed would take off his clothes before going to bed he took everything off. Especially if he had his girlfriend sleeping over… then it was more likely he didn't even get dressed again before they fell asleep.
It had finally happened - something that had previously been quite a big deal for the three friends - Ed lost his virginity just as the summer break started, on the same night as the bon fire party actually. Eddward thought it shouldn't really matter that much, but it had, even to him, so he was happy for Ed. Eddy, who was also currently in a relationship with one of Eddward's good friends was the one left who still hadn't taken that step with his girlfriend yet. But Edd assured him that they don't need to rush – it will come when they are ready; which Eddward, given the way Eddy and Becky were acting with each other, thought would be pretty soon.
Edd and Eddy decided, despite their misgivings, to go down the stairs to the basement where Edd's bedroom was, and Edd gently knocked on the door. "Ed?" he asked softly.
Eddy, losing patience after a few seconds, knocked harder and called through the door: "Listen, Romeo, time to wake up. Sorry to crush your dreams, but you won't get any prettier than this!"
Him and Double D started laughing. Erratic footsteps on the creaky wooden floor indicated that Ed was wobbling in there towards the door and unlocking it. He looked out at his friends. "Oh, do you lock your door, even?" Eddy chuckled and looked at Eddward who just stood there gaping as if he couldn't believe his ears.
How trustful Ed's parents were…or had they just given up and let the teenagers do as they pleased? Ed would turn eighteen in six months and May was already eighteen as she is one year older than the friends, the same age as Kevin, Nazz and Jonny.
Ed blinked hard, he was wearing underwear and a t-shirt, Eddward noted; so he wasn't naked at least. "What time is it?"
"Ten-ish." Eddy replied. "Have you forgotten the fishing trip? We are packed and ready."
Ed turned into the room, probably looking at May who was still asleep in bed, but they couldn't really see because the door was in the way. "I'll be ready in half an hour."
After thirty minutes, Ed came out the door with May and a large hiking backpack on his back. The sun was shining brightly over the cul-de-sac and the sidewalk where Edd and Eddy were waiting with fishing rods and backpacks, a tent, a portable stove and sleeping bags. A fishing net was wedged in Eddy's back pocket of the military-patterned shorts.
"'Sup?" asked Eddy.
May were holding her hand over her eyes and squinting in the bright summer sunlight. "Good." she replied. "You, guys?" Eddward and Eddy replied that they were good too, so she turned to Ed and whispered. "It'll be fine. Have a nice fishing trip with the boys, okay? Call me tonight… if you want to say goodnight."
Ed nodded and looked down at his feet. "I'll call."
"I know." May stood on her tiptoe to kiss Ed on the mouth. "Bye, guys." she waved and walked towards the bus stop while the Eds went to Eddy's car and started packing it full.
He drove them to the huge lake by the harbor where there was also a slightly larger forest around the entire thing. The drive was quiet. Neither Eddward nor Eddy wanted to intrude on Ed and May's privacy, but when they had unpacked the car and stumbled down the overgrown path toward a good spot around the lake a little way into a thicket, Double D, who was walking behind Ed, asked:
"Are you in a quarrel? You and May…"
"No, or… no. We're not in a quarrel." Ed replied. Eddy, who walked in front of them slowed down to listen as well. "Or… I don't even know what we're fighting about anymore."
"A little time apart could do good." Eddward said cautiously, he didn't want it to sound like he wasn't thinking through his words, so he added, "It could be that you are perhaps a little too used to each other's presence. You probably need to miss each other a little." What clichés! He had to think of better answers in the future.
Ed was quiet for a few seconds, as if thinking about whether the suggestion would help or not, but then he turned slightly to smile at Double D. "Yeah, that's probably it."
Still, it was Ed's first real relationship with a girl, so maybe clichés worked for him. Eddward still made it a mental note to talk it out with Ed properly during the day, he got the feeling that Ed wasn't being completely honest about how he felt about their fight - there must be something more weighing on him. But right now he would just try to make this weekend as good and fun as possible for the three of them.
Kevin
At least there was air condition in the mall, and while closing his eyes he could almost shut out the baby screams that echoed from the floor below. It was a fairly slow day for business. Friday afternoon - most people are probably at work right now. Well, at least the ones who don't have a kid to take care of, because apparently they hang out here. Kevin peered down over the railing to the floors below. Right in the middle, at the bottom, stood a fountain spouting water. On the second floor were the restaurants, and there somewhere sat a parent with their small child, and here on the third floor—where Kevin sat on a hard bench waiting outside the clothing stores—it was still quite peaceful and almost silent. Some generic pop music was heard from the speakers at low volume. Nazz promised this would be the last shop before she gave up, and Kevin promised he wouldn't wander off this time.
"I'm going to die..." he muttered and leaned back so that his head rested against the railing, the baby's screams still echoed through the floors and the girl in the speakers wailed ear-splittingly. "I'm going to die, I'm going to die, I'm going to die..."
"Stop being so dramatic." said a voice right next to him. Kevin looked to the side and saw Nazz sitting next to him on the bench – the downside of carpet was that no footsteps could be heard. She pulled out a piece of white cloth from her bag. "I found the dress; we can go now."
"Thank God!" Kevin shot up, pulled Nazz up from the bench and started walking with her under his arm toward the elevators at a brisk pace. "Hurry before you change your mind."
They stepped into the elevator with a mirror and faced it. Nazz gasped. "Shut up, we look so hot together! Look!"
Kevin rolled his eyes but smoldered toward himself. "Why are you surprised?"
But his statement earned him a sharp elbow in the side of his chest. They stood and posed together in front of the mirror for a while, but started laughing when it got too much of a top model situation. Nazz untangled herself from under his arm and stood alone in front of the mirror. She started fixing her hair and when the elevator stopped at the ground floor they both got off and headed for the exit.
"You're lucky you didn't get to come with me into the dressing room." joked Nazz
Kevin, who understood where she was going with the joke, smirked. "Oh really? Why?"
"Because this dress," she said, shaking her bag, "would have made you straight."
"Dork." Kevin laughed. "Are you going to try it on in front of Jonny tonight?"
"Are you kidding? He will tear it apart. No, I'll save it for your and Double D's birthday party."
"Was that what you were going to have it for?"
Now it was Nazz's turn to roll her eyes. "Have you ever seen me in a dress except at nicer events?"
"Honestly, I thought it was for Jonny."
"UGH! You guys are such pigs."
"You have a point…" Kevin said honestly. "But you're not mad at me... for real, right? 'Cause you were the one who started the locker room joke…" as usual he hated conflicts that confused him, but at the same time he and Nazz had always been able to be one hundred percent honest with each other. He even thought she knew more about him than his own boyfriend did.
Kevin knew Nazz inside and out. He knew everything about her. Every little thing. They had been best friends since preschool and even though there had been a two-year break somewhere in their relationship, it was as if that gap didn't exist. Nazz was just as insecure about herself as she had been when she was younger. She knew what she was in for and knew exactly what she had to give, but she never thought it was enough. Therefore she was good at hiding her insecurities behind self-esteem, but which was more about confirmation. Kevin hated having these thoughts about her, but at the same time he did everything he could to build her confidence up. It wasn't like she was alone, and she did the same for him.
"No, sorry. I just thought it was funny." Nazz said completely without getting angry. She knew that Kevin only wanted the best for her. She trusted him when he felt it was time to stop joking. Kevin took her hand in his and they walked together to the parking lot where his motorcycle was waiting for them.
When they reached the cul-de-sac Kevin dropped Nazz off at her house, they said goodbye to each other and then he rolled on to his own house and parked the motorcycle in the driveway.
A voice made him react when he had taken off his helmet. "Hi kevin!" Kevin looked back, it was Edd's mother walking across the road towards his house. There was no mistaking her: she was short and pretty, with short black hair and light blue eyes, a round face and a small nose.
"Hello, Mrs. Vincent."
Edd's and Kevin's moms had been best friends for as long as the Vincents had lived in the area, so it wasn't too strange to run into her boyfriend's mom every now and then… but the worst part was-
"She's cute, isn't she? Nathalie." Mrs. Vincent nodded her head toward Nazz's house where Kevin had just dropped her off. Edd's mom must have seen it as she started to walk across the street. "But she's dating that hideous boy Jonny Grove. If you want my opinion: you would have been a much better suitor for her."
Kevin began to chew the inside of his lip as Mrs. Vincent spoke, he began to feel uncomfortable. "He's actually pretty cool…" he muttered to defend his new friend, but it was as if he hadn't said anything.
"What mother wouldn't want you as a son-in-law?" Mrs. Vincent smiled kindly and patted him on the cheek, she sighed deeply and longingly. "If I had a daughter, I would bless you in a blink of the eye." She smiled again, and continued around the house to the back where Kevin's mother was probably waiting for her.
Those were good news, Kevin thought, that Edd's mother liked him so much. The only bad news was that she didn't know he was actually dating her son. Eddward still hadn't told his parents about their relationship. She in turn had no idea what so ever, which was strange since all the teenagers in the area, everyone at school and Kevin's mother knew, but apparently they were good at keeping secrets, because how long had Kevin and Edd been together now? Six, seven weeks? More or less. It was a wonder it was still a secret. A miracle… or a tragedy? At the same time, Kevin didn't dare ask Eddward when he had planned to tell his parents the big news, because it was something he had to do at his own pace: they didn't even know he was gay.
Everyone in the area knew the Vincents very well. While Lennard Vincent was very warm, a little naive and loved his solitude; Carla Vincent was his complete opposite: she was the head of the family, the one who made all the tough decisions and the one who controlled everything her husband and son did. She loved her family and did everything for them, but that also made her overprotective in the form of controlling. No one would dare break such news to her. Her son, Eddward, was her pride; he could never do wrong and was the perfect son. Perfect, smart, tall, kind and straight… she would flip if she found out what Kevin had done to her innocent son. Not very innocent, though… she'd freak the fuck out if she found out what Eddward had done to Kevin…
Alright, think of something else! He can't be standing here in his driveway thinking about things like this. He quickly forgot what his train of thought had previously been and therefore also forgot why he had felt so sad and unimportant a little while ago. He slowly shook his head with his eyes closed, then walked into his house and continued to think about his boyfriend inside.
