Man, I still can't believe it's been over a year now since JDF passed away. He left a lasting impression on the Ranger history and this episode clearly proved it. So in his honor and in honor of the franchise as a whole, here comes Hadley's view in the 500th overall episode of the series, "Legacy of Power".
Disclaimers: I don't own Power Rangers, as it is a product of Hasbro as of May 1st, 2018.
(Hadley's POV)
Over 24 hours without any signs of Dr. O. I knew this was not good at all. It was gonna be a good time as any to alert the team, and that's exactly what Dad and I were doing as we headed to Tommy's home in the woods.
I made my way inside and opened the hatch in time to hear Kira speaking, "I'd say we've achieved exactly the right level of freaking out."
I scrambled down the steps and went to the computers immediately as I acknowledged Kira's words, "You're definitely not wrong." I sat down and typed in some commands, showing the others the footage of Tommy pushing me away before he got kidnapped by the Tyrannodrones, all from my hidden personal camera's angle.
Ethan looked at me in surprise. "Jeez, no wonder you seemed so freaked out at school today."
I nodded nervously and hugged myself. "I'm still pretty spooked."
Conner came over and gently grabbed my arms. "Breathe, Hads."
I took a few deep breaths before I nodded a bit and sighed softly, biting my lip slightly before I looked at the group. "You guys have been asking about Dr. O and how he knows so much, right? Well, it's about time you were shown." I looked towards my father, who nodded to me, and turned back to the computer, typing in a few commands and bringing up a video file. "Okay, I'm in."
"Yeah, but where?" Kira asked in confusion.
"Just watch." I pointed to the screen as Dr. O made sure the camera was set up before he sat down and started speaking: "I'm Tommy Oliver, and if you're not me, then something's seriously wrong. This video diary is a confidental record, only to be viewed in the case of an emergency. What you're about to see is a history of my life."
"More boring dinosaur bone stories. Yawn," Conner spoke in annoyance, but the next line from Dr. O surprised the three: "My history as a Power Ranger."
Conner was especially shocked. "Okay, un-yawn."
"Told you guys you were at the right level of freaking out," I muttered slightly as the video continued with Dr. Oliver narrating the story of the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, the original five members before he was forcefully turned by Rita Repulsa, and we watched the history through several video clips.
"Okay, so where's Dr. O?" Kira asked impatiently, making me slap her in the leg before we all watched the good doctor's introductory, which made me chuckle a little bit at the sight of a younger Tommy.
Conner looked at me. "What's got you so giggly?"
I looked at him and shrugged. "Sorry, it's just... I never really imagined Dr. Oliver with a mullet. Guess that was a total nineties thing that I never got while growing up."
Conner shrugged slightly. "Can't be surprised, I guess."
We continued watching the video diary, but Ethan had to stop it at the White Ranger intro as he was in disbelief. "Okay, I'm so bugging right now, I can't even deal."
Conner had to agree as he spoke in awe. "Our teacher is the oldest living Power Ranger."
Suddenly, we heard another voice speak up. "He's not the oldest, just the best." We all spun around (Dad turning more calmly) as we saw Hayley behind us.
"Hayley?" Ethan was surprised and as we walked over, Conner and Kira asked the questions on our minds. "How did you get in here?" "More importantly, what do you know about any of this stuff?"
"I know that Tommy's in trouble, and you four are the only ones who can help him," Hayley said plainly, but at the same time, she spoiled the secret.
"Oh man," I groaned quietly, making a face.
"Wait, four?" Conner asked in confusion before the three of them looked at each other and then turned to me, realization coming to their faces.
I smiled sheepishly. "Surprise."
(Kira's POV)
"I can't believe you didn't tell us before!" I told Hadley incredulously; she had just finished explaining about how long she had been hiding her secret from us.
"To be fair, I was given a choice like you guys were," she responded. "I just decided to try and ensure that I could help others." She turned and scoffed slightly, looking crestfallen at the thought of her blunder. "Lot of good that did me though."
Conner walked over and placed a hand on her shoulder. "We don't blame you for hiding it from us, Hads. Any one of us could have been in your shoes with this. Heck, even around the other civilians, none of us can blow our secret."
Hayley nodded and stood by Captain Mitchell as she spoke to Hadley, "Your dad was definitely smart in ensuring you were ready to take a position as a Ranger. And honestly, I'm glad he and Tommy chose you to help the team."
Hadley looked over and smiled a bit. "I guess that makes sense, but there's still a lot of questions we need answered."
The two of them nodded and explained their history with Dr. O, Hayley speaking about her own contributions. "Tommy may be an expert dinosaurs and fossils, but a rocket scientist? He ain't."
"And lemme guess, you are?" Conner asked her.
Hayley shrugged slightly. "Among other things."
"Hayley's one of the brightest minds alongside Angela Fairweather," Captain Mitchell told us. "Believe me, you're all in good hands with her tech."
I nodded a bit before looking at Hayley. "Okay, so you know who we are. You know what we are. Do you know where Dr. Oliver is?"
"I think I have a pretty good idea," she responded, pulling out a disc and going to the computers, playing some security camera footage for us as she spoke to Hadley, "Your point of view was good, but security cameras are a little better at catching invisiportals."
"Why didn't he just morph? I mean he's a Power Ranger." Conner pointed out.
"Not anymore, Conner," Hadley spoke to him. "A lot of the Rangers don't have their powers anymore, my siblings included. Some willingly gave up their powers, others had the powers forcefully stripped from them."
I winced slightly. "That has to hurt."
She scoffed slightly. "More than you know." She sounded like she was showing a little bit of tension.
"I have a feeling they didn't get that far yet," Hayley reassured her as she played the video footage again.
We watched all the way through the rest of the Mighty Morphin' team and through to halfway past the Turbo team era where Hayley stopped it and spoke, "After that, Tommy went to college where he met yours truly. But when he found the Dino Gems, he knew he could never escape the Power for long."
"Seeing as I don't want this to be the end of the line, can we get back on the subject of finding Dr. O?" Ethan asked her.
I suddenly got an idea. "Hey, what about invisiportals? They're all over the city. We could find one, and get to Mesogog's lab."
"I've been working on that very thing, unfortunately I need just a little more time." Hayley responded.
Hadley nodded a bit and turned the video diary back on. "Meanwhile, you three can check out the rest of the video log. You might learn something from your predecessors."
We watched through the rest of the Turbo team's run through their adventures in space, then to the Lost Galaxy team before we reached Hadley's family team, something she didn't seem to be feeling good about.
Dr. O's video narration started speaking about the Lightspeed Rescue Rangers: "Meanwhile on Earth, an elite team was being put together to fight a new battle against an invasion of demons."
"Demons?" I asked in confusion, looking at the captain for answers.
He chuckled and spoke, "Put it this way: Aliens aren't the only threats some Rangers have to face."
I shrugged slightly and watched the clips of how the Lightspeed team came to be, seeing a younger Captain Mitchell explaining to the five chosen heroes - Carter, Chad, Kelsey, Joel, and Hadley's elder sister Dana - about the technology they'd use to be fighting the demons, a younger Hadley showing each team member their files and giving the team their Morphers before the clip changed to show an armored warrior fighting the demons with the team, that warrior being Hadley's sister in law Aurora who was an old friend of her brother's and the powerful Demon Huntress.
"Didn't realize you were a natural brunette, Hads," Ethan remarked, and I noticed the features as I saw Younger Hadley, speaking in agreement, "Huh. I didn't notice that before."
Hadley shrugged slightly. "I just thought of changing courses after a while to get some difference in, even if I had to dye my hair."
Conner smiled at her. "Well, brunette or auburn haired, you're still a beautiful warrior."
Hadley smiled at him. "Thanks, Conner."
We refocused on the video as we watched the clips, and the narration went on, "The Lightspeed Rangers needed one more to complete their mission, and that's when Ryan joined the team."
I noticed Hadley trembling as she quickly looked away. "Whoa, Hadley. You okay?" I ran over to comfort her as Hayley paused the video.
Hadley took several deep breaths, seeming to be hyperventilating a little bit.
Captain Mitchell came over and saw her state. "PTSD from Ryan's evil days."
I looked at him in confusion. "Huh?"
He looked at us and sighed softly before explaining, "When Ryan was evil, he took Hadley hostage to get at me and Dana. But we didn't expect him to throw her to the demons to almost get destroyed by one. And it wasn't just when he was with them either, but when he had the Curse of the Cobra affecting him. If he so much as morphed, he would have died when the cobra reached his neck. The others had to deal with Diabolico who was intent at the time on using Hadley as a sacrifice to Queen Bansheera to give her a human body to inhabit. Thankfully, the team stopped that and Ryan broke his curse, but there are still days when I wonder if that ritual may have succeeded in some way..." He looked away silently.
Conner walked over and placed a hand on the captain's shoulder. "If anything happens to Hadley, we'll definitely be sure to keep her safe. Even if that ritual very well might be successful sometime in the future or who knows what happens to her, we won't stop fighting until we get her back to herself."
Ethan and I nodded resolutely, determined to keep our friend safe.
The captain laughed slightly and nodded to Conner. "You've definitely got the Red Ranger spirit in you, kid. I think Carter would be proud of his successor."
A beeping caught our attention at that moment as Hayley spoke up. "Guys, I've almost got something!" She typed away as she continued, "Locked on to the back door to Mesogog's firewall. In theory, it should lead us straight to an invisiportal."
"Then what?" I asked in concern.
"I'll let you know when I get there," she responded, that meant there wasn't much luck... yet.
(Hadley's POV)
As we waited with nervous breath, I kept thinking back on how Ryan had been as an evil Ranger, my mind going back to the day when he had held me captive.
(Flashback, No POV)
"Ryan! You don't have to do this!" Carter shouted, holding his hand out. "She had nothing to do with what happened to you!"
Ryan scoffed slightly as he held a struggling Hadley in his arms. "Right, and she gets to go live her life not knowing everything about me? The way I see it, she deserves to learn what I went through!" He threw her into the hands of the demons near him and morphed into his suit.
The rest backed away as Dana shook her head slightly. "I know you're still in there, Ryan! And we will get you to remember!"
Aurora took charge of the plan. "Guys, try and subdue Ryan! I'll go ahead and rescue Hadley!"
"Got it! Let's go!" Carter spoke and the six heroes rushed forward, starting to battle their respective opponents.
(Flashback End)
(Hadley's POV)
Just remembering that time still gave me nightmares to this day and I was nervous as hell; losing my life was one thing, but losing a family friend was something I didn't want to go through.
Suddenly, I heard a beeping and got up. "What's happening?"
"Either I'm losing my touch or Mesogog is really smart for a mutant freak." Hayley responded and I saw the problem: blocks to prevent us from finding an invisiportal.
Suddenly, the screens changed to show us more of the video diary, the Time Force section. I remembered those guys well from when the Lightspeed team helped them.
As Jen explained where she and the main team came from, Ethan paused the footage. "Whoa, hold up. Power Rangers from the future?"
Kira spoke as well, "They're down with time travel and everything, right? Couldn't they take us back to the moment when Tommy was kidnapped?"
I immediately stood straight up. "No, uh-uh. Jen told me herself that messing with the time stream leads to dangerous consequences. We could create an alternate timeline or worse, erase our own from existence."
Kira nodded a bit. "Got it. Bad idea." She continued the video and we watched the team formation, Eric's introduction, and through to the Wild Force team.
"Meanwhile, back in reality, we still have no way to find Dr. O," Ethan spoke in exasperation.
I sighed softly and shook my head. "Guys, come on. Let Hayley do her work, okay? She'll think of something. Meantime, there's one more team that you need to watch."
"You mean the Ninja Storm team?" Conner spoke up suddenly, making us all look at him incredulously as he explained, "My twin brother went to this super secret ninja school. Everyone there knows a few of the students got chosen to be Rangers."
"Really?" I asked curiously. "Did your bro make the cut?"
"Nah. He couldn't even finish ninja school. He's like a total airhead. We're so different." He smirked slightly.
"Look, I found them," Hayley said, and we watched the Ninja Storm team's run against Lothor and his minions, and when it reached the final battle, I paused the video quickly. "Hey, that was only a few months ago." I turned to Conner. "Didn't your brother help out with that?"
He nodded a bit. "He might have been a civilian back then, but he had some good skills. Even taught me a few moves."
We backed up to give him some space as he demonstrated some ninja attacks before kicking a computer tower and making it spark.
"Way to go, genius!" I reprimanded him in annoyance.
"Please tell me that did not just happen," Kira spoke in concern.
"I think we just lost our only hope of finding Tommy," Hayley spoke, and Conner rightly looked dismayed at his actions.
Hayley got to work as quickly as she could, trying to get the computer working again. "Got it!"
"We're so lucky you're a genius!" Ethan said in relief, Conner letting out a breath he didn't realize he was holding in.
"Even geniuses need help sometimes. That little jolt must have done something to the wiring cause I'm getting something!" Hayley said happily.
I looked at Conner and shrugged slightly. "Okay, maybe you're not as brash as I thought."
Dr. O returned on his video screen and spoke, "With the return of Mesogog, it became necessary to invoke the power of the Dino Gems. Should anything happen to me, these four are in charge of protecting the world. You're in good hands."
I saw the images of our faces on screen and my eyes widened. "That's us!"
Conner nodded a bit. "He really does trust us."
Dad walked over and nodded a bit. "More than you know."
Ethan looked at us. "We have to save him. We owe it to him."
"The whole world owes him," Kira agreed.
I nodded as well. "No way we're letting the best of us be destroyed."
Hayley suddenly got a reading on the scanners. "It worked! I've got a lock on an invisiportal!"
Conner clapped his hands and rubbed them excitedly. "Time to go save our teacher."
I nodded in agreement, my mind thinking, 'Hang in there, Dr. O. We're coming to get you!'
And done! That was one hell of a ride for this episode. Hadley finally has her secret revealed, she shares a little bit of her past, and we may also have something set up for a future Ranger team up! Read and review as always!
