Whoohoo! Two chapters in one night! Now it gets more interesting…
A buzzing noise woke Kelsey with a start. A large bumblebee the size of a mouse, hovered above her; its many eyes watching her. She screeched and flung herself away from it, accidently kicking Kili in the gut. He woke up, groaning as he clutched his stomach in pain.
"Oh my gosh, I am so sorry Kili," cried Kelsey, scrambling over to him; avoiding the bee.
"It's okay, Kels," he laughed, painfully as he sat up from the hay. The pain began to subside once he found himself staring at her. Colour had returned to her cheeks and her eyes shined brightly in the morning light. Her hair had fallen out of her braid and hung messily around her face and shoulders, several pieces of hay stuck in it. Reaching up to remove the hay, he realised that although her hair was a mess and she hadn't bathed in a while, she was beautiful to him.
"Kelsey, I…" begun Kili before being rudely interrupted by the others awakening. Timing was wrong but he felt right with her. He had fallen hard and hoped she had too.
Kelsey felt a rush of emotions through her as she watched Kili give her a loving look. She felt so confused towards her feelings for Kili. She didn't know if it was just as friends or more, which scared her. She didn't know what the future held for her and she didn't want to bring Kili down with her.
A little bit later, she found herself sitting at the huge table surrounded by the others as the huge man, Beorn poured glasses of milk for them. He had greyish-brown hair that ran into a mane down the length of his back. He wore the simplest of clothes and a single shackle on his left arm. It clanged against the wood of the table every time he poured.
"So you are the one they call Oakenshield. Tell me, why is Azog the Defiler hunting you?" asked Beorn.
"You know of Azog? How?" questioned Thorin, curiously.
"My people were the first to live in the mountains, before the Orcs came down from the north. The Defiler killed most of my family, but some he enslaved," explained Beorn, a sad look on his face as memories flowed through. "Not for work, you understand, but for sport. Caging skin-changers and torturing them seemed to amuse him."
"There are others like you?" asked Bilbo, fascinated by his kind.
"Once, there were many."
"And now?"
"Now, there is only one," stated Beorn before peering over to Kelsey, his grey eyes wise but yet lonely. "I wouldn't be alive if not for Ilmarë."
"You knew my mother?!" said Kelsey, her eyes widening at this information.
"She was the one who heard my cries and released me. She cried with me when I told my story as she too had lost someone dear to her. She spoke of her little star-rose taken from her," explained Beorn.
"Star-Rose? That's what my name means in Elvish," stated Kelsey. "Merilwen."
"I am glad that you have returned, little one," smiled Beorn, taking one of her hands into his.
"So have I," Kelsey said, smiling back before glancing at all her friends.
"You need to reach the mountain before the last days of Autumn?" questioned Beorn, making his way back to Thorin.
"Before Durin's Day falls, yes," replied Gandalf with a nod.
"You are running out of time."
"Which is why we must go through Mirkwood."
"A darkness lies upon that forest. Fell things creep beneath those trees. There is an alliance between the Orcs of Moria and the Necromancer in Dol Guldur. I would not venture there except in great need," explained Beorn.
"We will take the Elven Road. That path is still safe," claimed Gandalf.
"Safe? The Wood-Elves of Mirkwood are not like their kin. They're less wise and more dangerous. But it matters not."
"What do you mean?" asked Thorin, crossing his arms.
"These lands are crawling with Orcs. Their numbers are growing and you are on foot. You will never reach the forest alive."
And with that, worry began to seep into everyone's mind again. Their journey to the mountain has become even harder.
"I don't like dwarves. They are greedy and blind; blind to the lives of those they deem lesser than their own," growled Beorn as he gently lifted up a mouse that had been scampering on the table and approaches Thorin. But Orcs I hate more. What do you need?
….
While Beorn was helping the dwarves prepare for their journey, Kelsey realised that Kili had disappeared. Concerned for his well-being, she walked over to Fili who was leaning against a pole with his pipe in his hand.
"Fili, do you know where Kili has gone?"
"He has gone to wash up by the stream," smiled Fili. "He shouldn't be too long."
"Will he be okay by himself?" she asked, which made Fili's smile grow larger.
"Of course, little one," he mocked, which made her punch him in the shoulder.
"Don't make me spar with you, Fili," she laughed. "You wouldn't want the same humiliation as Kili, do you?"
"Actually, Miss Kelsey, I was wondering if I could spar with you," exclaimed a voice behind her. She spun around and found Thorin holding her sword out in front of him.
….
After letting Fili know where he would be, Kili ventured down to the stream to wash up. He was rehearsing his little speech to tell Kelsey how he felt. Holding a single red rose he had found by the water's edge, Kili began to pace back and forth.
"Kelsey, I love you…no no that's too straightforward. Kelsey, I care deeply for you," he started with, before shaking his head. He had never proclaimed his love to someone before. When he and Fili were back in the Blue Mountains, Fili knew how to deal with the girls, where the girls avoided him for lack of beard. It used to frustrate him until he came to the conclusion that he would never find his One. Until he met Kelsey. Her very soul resonated with his, bringing forth feelings he had never felt before. Her laughter, her smile, her eyes, would make him melt every time.
"Kelsey, here is a rose that is an appreciation for my feelings for you."
"That's pretty," called out an unfamiliar voice. Kili spun around and came face to face with a woman. Her lips as red as blood, her skin as white as snow, her eyes as blue as the sky and her hair as golden as the sun that beamed down at them. She wore a simple grey dress that fell just above her ankles and a white corset that narrowed her waist and made her breasts appear larger.
"Is it for someone special?" she asked as she stepped closer. Kili just stood there, not knowing what was coming over him. He passed the flower to this woman who instantly smiled before placing a delicate hand on his hand. If Kili had been focusing on his surroundings than on this beautiful woman, he would have noticed a dark shadow dart back and forth in the trees, mimicking her moves.
But he was too stunned at the most beautiful being he had laid eyes on. His feelings for Kelsey vanished and soon replaced by puppetry of the woman.
