Levi opened a pair of double doors that lead into an office of some sorts within the fortress. The office contained four pieces of furniture. An office desk located at the back wall, two different colored couches facing each other, with a small coffee table sitting between them.
Hange Zoe, the Section Commander of the 4th division of the scouts was sitting cross legged on the couch left to the coffee table. The fading green dye contrasted against her loose beige outfit. It looked like she was wearing pajamas. You can never tell with Ms. Hange though. Jason thought to himself.
Erwin Smith, Commander of the Scouts, sat behind the large office desk, scribbling on a piece of paper with an inked quill. He was wearing his military uniform minus the brown jacket and ODM equipment.
He dipped the feather in his ink bottle. "I guess your instincts were right Levi."
The short man next to him shrugged. Hange raised from her sitting position and stomped towards Jason. Grabbing his collar, she pulled his face towards hers, "YOU IDIOT! DIDN'T I TELL YOU NOT TO MOVE! NOT ONLY THAT BUT YOU LEFT THE WALLS!" She held her head back, and before Jason could react, headbutted him.
Jason backed away from the impact, holding his injured head. Levi had come in between them, specifically holding Hange back. "Do you know how worried I was, you ungrateful prick!" Finally noticing Levi she said, "Don't get in my way Levi. Jason needs to learn a lesson he'll never forget."
"That's just the thing Hange." Everyone in the room looked at the Commander. Erwin was rounding his desk, heading for the red couch to the right of the coffee table. "We can't discipline him. He's not a member of this military." Sitting on the couch, Jason's eyes widened. The right sleeve of his dress shirt was empty.
"He is, however, a prisoner. And if I remember correctly, young Jason made a deal with you and Levi to answer all our questions if we allowed him to join the expedition."
Jason was backing away from Hange, his eyes still on the empty sleeve. his back hit the wall. He bumped into something lumpy. Looking behind him he realized he had backed into the office bookshelf. He noticed the books that had fallen on the floor to his left.
"I'm sorry." He kneeled to pick up the books. He wasn't sure if he was apologizing to Hange or Erwin. A hand began helping him. Looking up he saw Levi.
"Go sit down." It didn't feel like an order.
Jason, putting some of the books back on the shelf, went to sit on the green colored couch. Hange was sitting on the other end, glaring at him.
"So?" Erwin asked.
Jason took a second to recollect what the Commander had said earlier. It was hard to keep his eyes off the missing arm.
"Yes, I'm sorry, I just… I don't know if I want to keep that promise."
Hange's audible growl scared Jason.
"I don't mean I don't want to keep my promise. I mean that… I'm pretty sure you guys wouldn't believe me even if I told you."
The room stayed silent.
Erwin pointed behind Jason with his left hand. "Levi, could you hand me that book." The Captain obliged. Levi passed the book to his superior and stood behind the man, his eyes on Jason.
Erwin placed a small, thin, brown leather covered book on the table.
"Jason, what do you think the purpose of the Scouts is?" Erwin asked, flipping through the pages of the small book.
Jason thought about the question, recalling what Armin said when they first met he answered, "They are the Spear of Humanity, tasked with venturing beyond the walls for the sole mission of eliminating the titan threat."
Erwin smiled at the answer. "You're not wrong. But that's not the full picture. If it was, Levi would be all we needed to accomplish that mission." Hange chuckled next to him.
Erwin's eyes switched to the Section Commander. "Hange, what do you think the purpose of the Scouts is?"
Hange put one leg over the other, "To understand the titan threat."
"What do you mean by 'understand'?" Jason asked, confused at her answer.
Hange, finally looking at him without glaring, said, "For too long humanity has looked at titans with hatred and thoughts of revenge. But what exactly are titans? Why do they only eat humans? How do they multiply? None of these questions have ever been answered. Humanity has never tried to understand titans, and because of that, not only have we been behind these walls for one hundred years, but we've even lost territory to them."
Jason looked to the coffee table, "To defeat your enemy, you must first understand them." Lupa's words unconsciously left his mouth.
Hange clapped, "Exactly! See Levi, he's not as dumb as you think he is."
"I didn't say he was dumb." Levi mumbled.
"The point is," Erwin interjected, "Our mission is to understand. Whether we like the information we find is not the mission. Uncovering the truth, no matter what it may be, is our mission." Erwin's eyes were on Jason, "Trust that whatever it is you tell us, we will believe it. Whether we like it or not."
A myriad of emotions overcame the boy. Fear being the largest, and confusion a close second. He grabbed his head, "It's not even that… it's that I don't even know what happened. I was with Piper and Apollo and then…" A headache began to form. For some reason the girl in the RV came to his mind. She was connected to it all somehow, but he didn't know how. How was he going to explain any of this to them?
Even if they believed him, would they help him get home? He had to keep his promise to Percy. Oh gods, Eren was there too! Jason had completely forgotten the titan shifter was in the shared dream. How much had Eren told them?
A hand grabbed his shoulder. Jason put his arms down to see Hange who had closed the space between them. "It's alright. Just take it one step at a time."
Jason saw the bump forming on her head from where she attacked him. "How can you trust me Ms. Hange. I put all of you in danger. Levi is right. I should be in a cell right now."
"You're wrong."
Everyone looked behind Erwin.
With his back to the wall, Levi crossed his arms, "The others don't remember it, but Mikasa and Eren said you saved everyone from… tree's. If anything, the scouts owe you their lives."
Hange raised her eyebrow at the Captain, "What do you mean Levi?"
Levi took a breath, "Apparently, moving 'trees' attacked the scouts when they were retreating from the battle with the titan shifters. Erwin told me about it when he first returned. But hours later when I asked him about it, he had no idea what I was talking about." Erwin's face was neutral at the comment. "I asked others who reported the same thing when they first returned, and they all reported that nothing of the sort had happened. All except for Mikasa, and then later Eren confirmed it when he woke up from his injuries."
Jason rose slamming the table, "THE MIST!" He yelled.
All eyes were on Jason, he slowly sat down. "I'm sorry, when I heard something familiar I just…"
"You know what he's talking about?" Erwin asked.
Jason nodded, "Sounds like someone used the mist on everyone to make them forget… whatever Levi was talking about. But it doesn't make sense. Why would only Eren, Mikasa and Levi remember what happened? I don't even remember what happened."
"Wait wait wait," Hange interrupted his thoughts, "what is this 'mist'?"
Jason looked at her, Oh right, they don't know. "It's how the Greek and Roman deities and monsters hide themselves from mortals. It's in place because mortal societies wouldn't be able to handle the reality of the Greek and Roman myths being real."
They all looked at him confused. "It's.. uhh…" Take it one step at a time.
Jason took a breath. Then he said, "Where I'm from, we have neither the walls nor the titans. It's a… mostly peaceful world. But there are powerful deities that hide themselves from the world. They have power over a great many things, but they mostly just watch things pass by. These deities have children with mortals sometimes. Those beings, the children I mean, are called demi-gods. They have both mortal and godly blood running through their veins." Jason gripped his hand, "It's who I am. My father is the god of thunder, while my mother was a mortal woman."
Silence filled the room. Jason wanted to believe that what Erwin had said was true. That the scouts would accept the truth, no matter what it was. But Jason knew better. If he was in their shoes, he wouldn't believe him either.
Jason saw Erwin give a small smirk. It was the first expression of joy Jason had seen on the man. It was the first expression he had seen on him period. He then asked, "Your fathers name… is it perhaps this?"
Before Jason could ask what he meant, Erwin pushed the small leather book towards Jason. Flipping it, he pointed to a page containing an image of an eagle. Next to it was the word JUPITAR in large Latin letters. Under the title were words written in a language he didn't understand.
Jason's eyes widened in shock.
Erwin chuckled saying, "It looks like we know more than you think, Jason Grace."
