Shun Fukuhara, a Slifer Red student in his first year at Duel Academy breathed in the humid but sweet tropical air of the island. I made it! I'm really here. He thought. It was still hard for him to process the fact that he was in the finest Dueling School in the world.

The process was so competitive. He wanted to be an Obelisk Blue student, but his parents couldn't afford to send him to one of those fancy prep schools to get him in. Why they existed, he didn't know.

It just seemed like an obstacle Kaiba Corp put up to keep the 'Chaff' as Dr. Crowler called them, from getting into the school. So he figured he could be a Ra Yellow at least. The Winged Dragon of Ra was his favorite of the three Egyptian God Cards the legendary duelists used in the Battle City Tournament.

God! What an epic event that was. He sure hoped he could headline the finals of an epic tournament the way he did. But, even the Ra Yellow Dorm eluded him. The written exam was a total drag, and if he scored any lower, he wouldn't have even been allowed to settle in the Slifer Red Dorm, the lowest-ranked dorm in Duel Academy.

Still, he wasn't deterred. It may have been the bottom of the barrel but the Slifer Red color of the blazers was very cool-looking. And he figured climbing from the bottom to the top would prove to be an excellent journey. He was ready for it.

He stretched and yawned, then stuck a stalk of grass into his mouth. He was resting on the branch of a tree that stood at the edge of a cliff overlooking the ocean. The red headband he fastened out of one of the sleeves he cut off from his jacket was wrapped around his head and flapped in the cool sea breeze.

Ever since the semester began, the tree became his favorite spot to rest after long, grueling hours of listening to lectures about The Theory of the Heart of the Cards, the basic uses of the extra deck, and so on and so on.

The waves sure calmed him down and eased his nerves. After hours of listening to Obelisk Blues berate and humiliate him for the color of his jacket, he needed a place to cool down before doing his homework or studying for one of the infamous pop quizzes Dr. Crowler always gave his students each week.

"They'll see," he said. He gazed at the waves below the cliff. "They'll all see. Jaden Yuki proved this dorm is not one to be underestimated."

Jaden Yuki. He was the talk of the whole school right now. In the entrance exams weeks ago, he arrived late. And as punishment for his tardiness, Dr. Vellion Crowler, one of the professors at the school, dueled him as the Proctor for his entrance exam. He summoned his best monster, Ancient Gear Golem, pounding Jaden's creatures and his Life Points into a pulp. But Jaden miraculously pulled off a win with his Elemental HERO Flame Wingman. He remembered how quiet the arena was. No one, not even the Obelisk Blues said a word as they watched Crowler's most powerful monster crumbling down all around him and his Life Points dropping to 0.

The quiet of the forest was disrupted by a pitiful screaming from down below. Shun opened his eyes and looked around. Someone was running straight towards the tree he was resting on. Someone with greenish-blue hair and round glasses smaller than his large eyes came sprinting down the jungle at top speed, yelling for mercy. "Hey, that's Zane's little brother, Syrus," said Shun.

Behind Syrus, a band of Obelisk Blues was giving chase, Duel Disks powered on and arms in the air, yelling at him to come back.

"I didn't do anything!" Syrus called out. He zoomed under the branch where Shun lay, leaving a trail of brown dust behind his boots. "Come on, guys! It was an accident!"

Shun's ego donned their Superman tights and forced him to intervene. He spat the stalk out and jumped down from the tree. He landed in front of the Obelisks. "Whoa, easy there, boys. What's the rush?"

"Out of the way, Slifer Slacker!" shouted a tall boy with dark blue hair. His name as Zachary (From Duel Links). "This doesn't concern you!"

"Oh, you're chasing one of my fellow classmates through the jungle. So I think it does concern me. Now, before any of you do something stupid, that goes for you, too," he looked over his shoulder at Syrus who was backed up against a tree, "why don't you guys explain what happened?"

"That boy is a pervert!" shouted an Obelisk Blue with a square face and pointy brown hair. "We caught him running into the girl's locker room during gym class."

"It's not my fault!" Syrus declared. "Honest! I'm blind as a bat and those stupid locker room signs are so tiny! I didn't want to cause any trouble! Really!"

Shun shrugged. "Yeah, not gonna lie, I almost made that mistake, too. They need to fix that. Come on, guys. Cut him some slack."

"That ain't happening!" said the boy with rectangular glasses. "He needs to pay for what he's done. He was in Obelisk Blue turf! He never should have been there in the first place!"

Shun smiled as he gave a heavy sigh. Looks like there was only one way to settle this.

"Well, if you want him, you're going to have to get past me," he said. He took his Duel Disk out of his backpack and placed it on his wrist. The Duel Disk detected another one was active and powered itself on. The red light at the center glowed and the blade to his cards extended before it made a beeping sound to confirm it was ready to begin simulating the match with its powerful holographic technology.

"So, you wanna take us on, eh?" said the guy with the rectangular glass. "Fine. Taking on a Slifer slacker like you should be no problem!"

Turn 1 - Zachary

Cards in Hand x6

"Your superior will be starting things off, slacker!" Zachary rudely declared. He didn't just draw his card. He swiped it off the top of the deck like an assassin unsheathing a dagger, ready to make the kill. "I'll set a card face-down and summon a monster in defense mode. Your turn, slacker!"

Turn 2 - Shun

Cards in Hand x6

"All right, it's my turn," said Shun. "Draw! I'll set two cards face-down and summon Dual Avatar Fists - Yuhi!"

Shun summoned a guy in black and red robes with a yellow sash. He pumped his fists up, creating a blue aura of flames around them. He punched the air and got into a combat stance as his 1800 ATK and 1000 DEF showed up on a holographic screen next to him.

"Attack! Souten Flaming Fists!" Shun commanded. Yuhi heeded the boy's command. He yelled as he jumped up high. He smashed his fist on the defense position monster, making Zachary laugh. The face-down Duel Monster was broken in half by Yuhi's punch and it revealed a little pink dragon with black eyes.

"You idiot! You attacked my Kidmodo Dragon! And when it's destroyed, I get to summon a Dragon-Type monster from my hand! Feast your eyes on the mighty Tyrant Dragon!"

He summoned a very classic-looking dragon with brown scales and blue wings with a bright green gem on its head. It had 2900 ATK points.

"Wow," Shun said. "Dragons? What is it with you Obelisks and dragons? I swear nobody around here is original anymore."

"What's the matter? Jealous?" laughed Zachary. "Everyone knows that dragons are the rarest and strongest monsters anyone can find in Duel Monsters. They represent power and that's what we in Obelisk Blue are all about."

"I end my turn," said Shun. He set his cards down and stood up straight.

Turn 3 - Zachary

Cards in Hand x 4

"My turn! Draw!" Zachary said. "I summon Alexandrite Dragon!" His friends cheered as a beautiful dragon made of white stone covered in glimmering precious gems took to the field. It spread its wings as its 2000 ATK projected next to it, and then let out a roar that echoed across the jungle.

Zachary formed his left hand into a fist as he bared his teeth for a sneer. "After I take down your little fist fighter, your Life Points will be at the mercy of my Tyrant Dragon. And don't think you can spring any traps against him. Because my Tyrant Dragon can't be targeted by your traps. If you do, he'll just negate them and destroy them."

"That's a powerful card," Syrus gulped. "Man, now it looks like this guy is the one who needs saving."

Shun just looked Tyrant Dragon in the eyes. He nodded as if to say: "Bring it on!"

Zachary extended his arms and held out his palm. "Alexandrite Dragon! Destroy his Dual Avatar! Imperial Flames!" Alexandrite Dragon flew over their playing field. The gust from his wings made the trees shiver and shed a few leaves. Alexandrite Dragon then blew glimmering white flames at Yuhi, burning him to ashes and incinerating 200 of Shun's Life Points.

"Aggh! Rrrggh!" Shun went as the flames whipped around him. His arms were crossed over his face and his headband flapped in his spiky brown hair.

Shun - 3800 LP

"And now my Tyrant Dragon is gonna blast you to kingdom come!" Zachary declared dramatically. "Attack!"

"I activate my trap card!"

"What did I just say, slacker? Your trap cards won't work on my dragon!"

"It's not aiming for your dragon, idiot! The card I activated is called Back to the Front! With it, I can bring a monster back from the graveyard in defense mode! Yuhi returns to the field!"

"It won't do you any good!" Zachary said with a very mean laugh. "I activate my trap! Dragon's Rage! Now my dragons can inflict damage to your Life Points even if your monsters are in defense mode!"

Tyrant Dragon [ATK 2900]

Dual Avatar Fists - Yuhi [DEF 1000]

Syrus let out a squeaky gasp. "That's not good!"

Tyrant Dragon sent Yuhi back to the graveyard with a cone of white-hot flames that incinerated him as soon as it touched him. The flames then hit Shun. He yelled from the pain and was flung backward into the air. He flipped and landed on his feet. As pockets of flames licked the grass around him, his body billowed steam and he panted heavily. The attack lost him 1900 points bringing him down to a score of 1900.

"Look at that," Zachary's friend laughed. "You're down to less than half of your Life Points. Maybe this will teach you to mess with Obelisk Blues again!"

Zachary LP 4000

Shun - LP 1900

"Oh, I'm not through with him yet, boys! From my hand, I activate the spell, Dragon's Gun Fire! When I have a dragon on the field, I can blast 800 more Life Points right out of him."

Tyrant Dragon opened his mouth and fired a ball of flames at Shun. There was a great blast that created a sphere of flames, followed by a column of black smoke that grew past the jungle canopy. The birds nearby were spooked by the blast and flew off into the sky. Shun flew out of the column of smoke and smacked the ground hard. He rolled a few times and stopped. His Life Points were now at 800.

Zachary and his Tyrant Dragon walked toward Shun slowly. The dragon's massive size and weight shook the jungle with each footstep. "Have you had enough? Or are you thirsty for more, Slifer slacker!?"

Shun's body quivered and he made sad hiccuping sounds.

"Aww, what's the matter? Is the baby gonna cry?"

Shun looked up and revealed that he was actually laughing. "Man, I'm home!" he said. "This is some of the best action I've ever seen. You don't get duels like this back in my town. Now, it's my turn to heat things up! Hopefully, I can match up to the power of that awesome dragon of yours. He's so cool!"

"What?" shouted Zachary. "You're supposed to be scared of him! Not admiring him?"

"Scared? No, I respect that dragon. He's strong, powerful, and loyal. He's been there for you getting the job done since you played him. And let me tell you something, snob, my cards believe in me the same way your Tyrant Dragon believes in you."

"Cards believing in him?" Syrus wondered. "What does he mean by that?"

"You must have been listening to Yugi Muto's speeches again!" laughed Zachary. "I respect the guy as a duelist but that whole Heart of the Cards philosophy is nothing but a bunch of crap."

"Allow me to retort," said Shun. "YYYYYAAAH!" He furiously screamed out into the jungle as his fists were shrouded by a flaming red aura. He drew his card with such fury that it left a flaming streak through the air that turned into sparkling embers.

Turn 4 - Shun

LP 800

Cards in Hand x 3

"I activate Pot of Greed and draw two additional cards. Next, I activate my final trap card! Dual Avatar Return! Now, I can target a Dual Avatar in my graveyard and special summon him back to the field! Rise, Dual Avatar Fists!"

Yuhi came jumping out of the ground and pumped his fists through the air.

"And since he's a Level 4 monster, I'm allowed to special summon a Dual Avatar Spirit Token! Then, using Yuhi's effect, I'll tribute my token and add a Duel Avatar card to my hand. Now, I activate the spell, Dual Avatar Invitation! With this card, I discard a card and then I can special summon as many Dual Avatar Spirit Tokens as possible to my field!"

Swarms of imperial guardian lions made of purple fire appeared on the field. "And now, I can fusion summon a monster from my Extra Deck! First, I use Dual Avatar Fists - Yuhi and one Dual Avatar Spirit Token!" Shun clasped his hands together. "Mighty Fighter with burning fists! Unleash the power and grant me victory! Fusion Summon! Dual Avatar Fists - Armored Ah-Gyo!"

Shun summoned a version of Yuhi after he had years of battling countless enemies. The flaming heads of imperial lions roared as an aura over his fists as he sliced them through the air. He stomped the ground next to Shun so his 2100 ATK could be seen.

"And I am not through yet!" said Shun. Now a flaming aura appeared on his feet. "I use Dual Avatar Feet - Kokoku from my hand and another Dual Avatar Spirit Token on the field to create another Dual Avatar!"

"Another one!?" Zachary cried out nervously.

"Legendary Fighter with the strength of a thousand men! Lend me your power! Fusion Summon! Dual Avatar Feet - Armored Un-Gyo!"

Now Shun summoned an elegant fighter who utilized the power of his feet. He wore whitish-blue robes and glasses over his glowing eyes. He kicked the air as flaming blue lion heads roared over his feet. His ATK Points were 1700.

"Whoa..." said Syrus.

Zachary suddenly started clapping slowly. "Impressive display there. But it was all for naught. Your two fighters don't have nearly enough power to take on my Tyrant Dragon."

Shun just responded with a smile. "Who says I'm finished? When Armored Ah-Gyo is summoned with an effect monster, all my Dual Avatar fusion monsters gain 300 extra ATK and DEF points."

[Ah-Gyo 2400]

[Un-Gyo 2000]

"They're still not strong enough!" Zachary boasted.

Shun responded with a smile. "Ha! You Obelisk Blues love counting your chickens fast, don't you? I activate Armored Ah-Gyo's special ability. He can select an ATK position monster you control and destroy it! Tyrant Dragon! It's been real!"

Ah-Gyo grunted, channeling all his energy into his fists. He leaped across the field and punched Tyrant Dragon in the chest. The dragon reared its head up, roaring from the pain before it blew up. Zachary yelled as he was blasted by a cloud of smoke.

"And that was just his special ability!" Shun declared. "Now, Ah-Gyo, attack his Alexandrite Dragon!"

Ah-Gyo grunted in response and leaped across the field, reaching Alexandrite Dragon in the blink of an eye. He raised his fist and punched right through the rock-hard chest as though it were paper. The dragon blew up and Zachary lost 400 Life Points. Now he had 3600. That was until Un-Gyo was commanded to attack. He jumped and spun around a few times before smacking his foot against Zachary's chest, making him slide backward on his feet.

"You dare hurt me!" Zachary shouted.

Shun, again, responded with a smile. "Yes. I dare. Now, I set a card face-down and end my turn."

Turn 5 - Zachary

LP 1600

Cards in hand x4

"You'll pay dearly for that!" Zachary said getting up. "You Slifer slacker! I'll put you in your place! I summon Infernal Dragon in attack mode! But he won't be staying for long. For I now use Monster Reborn to bring back my Tyrant Dragon! And in order for him to return, a weaker servant must be sacrificed! Infernal Dragon! Be gone with you!"

Infernal Dragon roared sadly and turned into flames, which then morphed into Tyrant Dragon. The giant dragon hissed and steam slithered from between its teeth.

"Man, that was sad," said Shun. "That dragon didn't have a chance to prove himself."

"And now I'm going to toss this pathetic Tyrant Dragon away to summon something even stronger!"

"Wait, hold on!" shouted Shun. "Just because I beat him, it doesn't make him pathetic! He fought hard for you!"

"Spare me that bonding bullshit! I've heard enough about that from Jaden Yuki, another fool who's sympathetic with his cards. Tyrant Dragon didn't get the job done! And any card that fails to do my bidding is worthless! He's going to make up for his failure by becoming the sacrifice I need to summon an even stronger dragon! Tyrant Dragon, I retire you and summon the mighty Strong Wind Dragon!"

Hurrican-force winds blew all around them, knocking a few of the trees down around them (Holographic simulation of course. Tyrant Dragon was then consumed by a giant green tornado. Then a muscular dragon with green skin and shriveled wings took his place. It let out a deep bellowing roar as its 2400 ATK points were projected beside him.

"HAHAHAHAHAHA!" Zachary held out his arms as though he were Dr. Frankenstien after successfully creating his monster. "It's over for you, slacker! When Strong Wind Dragon is summoned to the field, he gains half the ATK points of the monster that was sacrificed for his summoning. Tyrant Dragon had 2900 ATK points so that means my Strong Wind Dragon's ATK increases to 3850!"

"Oh no!" cried Syrus. "Now it doesn't matter which one of that kid's monsters makes the hit. He's finished."

"Strong Wind Dragon! Destroy Armored Un-Gyo!" Zachary commanded.

Strong Wind Dragon raised his fist, ready to smash Un-Gyo like a bug.

"I activate my face-down card! Dual Avatar Defeating Evil! Now, I select a Dual Avatar I control and a card you control and destroy them both! Un-Gyo! Go and rest."

Un-Gyo bowed and then disappeared into a shower of sparkling lights. Then Ah-Gyo raised his fists to channel all his power into them. Un-Gyo's fighting spirit infused itself with the aura of Ah-Gyo's fist. Now the flaming aura became a mix of blue and red. Ah-Gyo jumped up and raised his powered fist.

WHAM! Strong Wind Dragon and Ah-Gyo's fists collided, creating a massive shockwave that knocked more trees down. Both monsters were now locked in a power struggle, creating a fierce gust. Syrus cried out as he used his arms to shield his face from the winds. Zachary's friends were also yelling and hollering in horror as they tried to protect themselves from the winds. The ground beneath Strong Wind Dragon's feet started to crack and bolts of electricity zapped all around the two monsters.

Meanwhile, Zachary and Shun had a stare-down with each other as the chaos unfurled all around them. Shun's headband whipped over his hair and the hem of Zachary's coat flapped around like a flag in a storm.

Strong Wind Dragon tried his best to overcome Ah-Gyo's power, but there was nothing he could do. Zachary had nothing to negate the effect of Shun's card so the dragon's fist started getting pushed back. It snarled, trying desperately to knock back his foe. Then there was another explosion. Strong Wind Dragon was defeated.

"NOOOOOOOO!" Zachary cried out. He knew this was it. He had nothing on his field and no cards worth playing from his hand. Ah-Gyo suddenly flew out from the cloud of smoke and punched Zachary hard in the stomach. He flipped over and over through the air.

"MOMMY!" he shouted before crashing into his friends.

"I win!" said Shun. "Unless you want to go again."

Zachary was the first to get up from the pile of disgraced Obelisk Blues. He sprinted through the jungle. "WE'LL HAVE OUR REMATCH!" he shouted. "MARK MY WORDS THIS ISN'T OVER!"

His friends finally picked themselves up and ran after him, calling for him to wait up. Shun turned his Duel Disk off and his Armored Ah-Gyo disappeared.

"Wow, thanks a lot!" said Syrus. "You really kicked that guy's butt."

"Thanks. Sorry I didn't introduce myself earlier. You seemed to be in a real jam. My name's Shun."

He and Syrus shook hands.

"I'm Syrus. Nice to meet you, Shun. So, I see you're a Slifer Red like me." His smile faded and turned into an expression of glumness and self-doubt. "Well...maybe not like me. I can't duel like you and Jaden can."

"You mean Jaden Yuki?"

"Yeah, he's my roommate."

"Oh, so it's you guys who were making all that racket late at night last night."

Syrus laughed in embarrassment. "Yeah, sorry about that. Jaden and my roommate Chumley tend to get competitive when it comes to eating the last bits of food we got in the fridge."

Shun broke into a laugh. "Man, you guys sound like a real riot. Say, I never really got a chance to meet up with Jaden. Think you can introduce me to him. I'd love to have a few words with the kid who beat Crowler and his legendary monster."

"Ha. A word or an excuse to just throw down against him in a duel?"

"Heh, heh," Shun nervously chuckled as he rubbed the back of his head. "Uh...maybe both?"

"Man, you two are almost alike," said Syrus. "Always up for a duel. Sure, I guess I can introduce you to him. He's probably sleeping around somewhere." Syrus headed up the road back to the Slifer Red Dorm. "Come on!" he called out.

Shun nodded his head and followed, wondering what the mighty Jaden Yuki had in store for him when they would finally meet.
