PROLOGUE ARC
1.
"Sorry kid, it ain't gonna happen," told the doctor to a little Izuku Midoriya rather harshly.
And that's when Izuku's world shattered upon those words.
"Oh my..." Izuku's mother Inko Midoriya uttered, a little shocked and appalled that this doctor would be so blunt on saying it, "W-What's wrong? Why can't he have a Quirk?"
"Simply put, he has extra two joints in one of his pinkie toes. Upon looking at the X-ray, it's an old telltale sign that he can't have one if this exists. Quirks are an evolutionary trait, so his body hasn't adapted to the changes."
Everything else all passed by like a blur for Izuku...
All he knows is that...he won't have a Quirk...he can never have a Quirk...which means...
He won't be a Hero.
Inko held onto her son's hand as they walked down the sidewalk in a bustling district of Musutafu. She glanced down at her son, who was still staring off into the distance with a blank look on his face, carrying and dragging the All Might action figure in his hand.
She frowned at her son's deflated state. That doctor wasn't being professional at all when he announced her son was Quirkless...her poor boy wanted to be a Hero so bad...now his dream won't become a reality...
Maybe it was a blessing...she wouldn't be able to see her baby boy get hurt by any bad villains out there. And while it was a long way down the line, she was worried about how her son would fare against such terrors if he pursue being a Hero...he was such a sweet boy, and he didn't want him to face such harsh realities...
Which...is ironic, since this kind of harsh reality is hitting her poor little Izuku in the head. The reality that he'll never have a Quirk...
So...is this a blessing?
...She wasn't so sure...she just hated to see her baby boy so hopeless.
Inko tries her hardest to be the best mother she could ever be, tending to her little Izuku's needs, doing what's best for him, and letting him know what's right and wrong, giving him good values and morals...
She wishes her husband was here with them to help...
Not wanting her son to be so downhearted, she tried to reassure him, "It's okay, Sweetheart. I...don't think that doctor was being fair."
Izuku snapped out of his daze and looked up at his mother with a hopeful expression. "So...you do think I can have a Quirk?"
"...Well...I mean...that diagnosis the doctor said was...outdated, anyway," Inko told her son, afraid that she might have told a lie.
"Outdated?" Izuku asked questionably.
"Oh, that means it's, um, very old news, and it's not very reliable. People are discovering new things every day with Quirks, so you could just...be a late bloomer!" Inko reassured him with a sweet, but hopefully not forced smile.
"...Okay..." Izuku looked down as he walked, solemnly glancing down at his All Might action figure he was holding. "...But...everyone will have a Quirk except me in school. I'll be the Quirkless kid...and no one will want to play with me."
Now that broke her heart. She had to make him feel better right then and there...but not before Izuku said, "I'm sorry I failed, Mommy..."
Inko stopped in her walk as she looked at her son in surprise, "Failed? What do you mean?"
"I mean...you and Dad have Quirks...and I don't...I...I just wish I had cool Quirks like you guys...I don't want to disappoint you and Daddy..." Izuku's eyes were tearing up as he felt the despair in his stomach, "I'm...I'm a bad son."
"Izuku-Honey, stop that right now," said Inko's stern but soft tone.
Izuku looked up at his mother, his teary eyes wide with surprise as well.
Inko had a look of determination on her face as she looked down at her boy. She knows now what she must say right then and there.
"Izuku-Dear...you will never be a disappointment to me or your father. You are my wonderful, special, and loving baby boy, and...if you somehow do or don't have a Quirk in the future, just know that I will always love you just the way you are, with or without a Quirk. I will always love you forevermore, my precious little boy, and don't you forget that. You are the world to me. I am so happy to even have you...you are my prize and treasure, and whatever you want to do in the future...I will support you one-hundred percent." Inko said as she finished encouraging her son.
His tears only grew stronger, but this time he was crying for a different reason. "Tha-...Thank you, Mommy."
Inko smiled warmly, "Of course, Sweetheart. I love you so, so much. Don't ever, ever forget that."
And Izuku smiled for the first time ever since he was pronounced Quirkless. He hugged onto his mother's leg in appreciation and wiped his tears on her pant leg.
Giggling at her son's sweet gesture, she turned her head to look up to see...that they were at a movie theater.
An All Might movie poster was shown, and Inko thought of an idea.
Oh, what's the harm of spending money on a movie that he had already seen? He deserves it. And he loves All Might, so maybe this will cheer him up.
"Izuku? How about we go see that movie again? The one where All Might went to America and fought off the movie's Villain?"
Izuku looked up and said with a cheerful smile. "Okay!"
Now that's the Izuku I know. Inko smiled sweetly.
"Goodness, I never thought that movie was so violent a second time I viewed it..." Inko muttered as they exited the movie theater. "And such a long movie too...two and a half hours. My gracious..." Izuku, meanwhile, held onto her hand as he bounced in glee, ecstatic on his second rewatch.
"Wow! That movie was awesome a second time! Thank you so much Mommy for letting me see it again!" Izuku said to his mother in excitement.
Inko smiled at her son, "Oh, anything for you dear. So, are you feeling alright now?"
Izuku nodded in a fast motion, "I really am! Thanks, Mommy!"
She giggled and said, "Anything for my little man."
As they exited the theater, Inko and Izuku walked on the sidewalk once more, heading back to their home.
But it was then they saw a commotion up ahead on the street. There was a wreck with two cars smashed into each other and a fight was happening...which means…
"Oh! Hey, there's a Hero and Villain fight up there! Look, Mommy! Let's see! I want to see!" Izuku said as he bounced up and down again enthusiastically.
"Oh, dear...well, I don't know..." Inko told him with a frown.
I don't want Izuku to be exposed to more violence…
"I wonder who's fighting!?" Izuku said with stars in his eyes.
"Well...we can see on the news when we get home," Inko looked down at her son with an apologetic smile.
"Awww, but it would be cool to get that Hero's autograph! I want to know who's fighting him?"
"I'm...oh, I'm sorry, Honey, I just don't feel comfortable putting you that close to the action. Let's go a different way," Inko suggested.
Izuku pouted, "Aw, Moooom, I wanted to see who was fighting. What if it's All Might?"
"Dear, if it was All Might, he probably would have taken care of it by now."
"Hmm...that's true..."
Inko smiled, "Come on, Sweetheart. I'll cook you up some Katsudon for supper. How about that?"
Now Izuku's eyes twinkled with a big grin on his face. "Oh yay! Sure thing, Mom!"
Giggling at her son's enthusiasm for Katsudon, they went through a shortcut, an alleyway that would move them forward...
As soon as they entered the alleyway, they walked through until they took a left, and after walking straight, they soon took right and walked forward...
Everything looked barren as there were no people crossing the alleyways...
When they took another left up, around the corner, they almost bumped into a person that looked like an average man wearing a jacket, jeans, and a black shirt with brown shoes.
"Oh, excuse us," Inko said as she walked around the man while holding Izuku's hand.
But the man turned his attention to Inko and...pointed his finger at her back, letting him touch it. However, the finger...transformed into a gun barrel.
Inko froze.
Izuku kept walking but stopped as he realized that his mother wasn't coming with him as he held onto her hand.
"Okay, here's the deal," the crook whispered into Inko's ear as he leaned his head next to hers, "You tell your kid that I know ya, let him walk away, and you come with me without screaming your head off. Don't even fight. Just come with me and nobody gets hurt. Got it?"
"Mommy?" Izuku said to his mother in confusion.
"And if you do anything at this point, I'll shoot the kid."
"...I-Izuku-Honey, I...I'll-I'll meet up with you at the end of the alleyway, alright?"
"Huh?" Izuku blinked, "But...I don't want to leave you behind, Mommy."
Now the man spoke to Izuku in a normal tone, "Don't worry kid, I'll bring your Mom back in a little bit. I know her and I want to catch up with her."
Izuku looks up at his mother's face.
Her face looked down at him with something that looked akin to...desperation...with a hint of fear...
It was then little Izuku realized, something was wrong. Something in his gut told him that this man was lying...and that his mother was in danger.
"...Wh-Who are you, then?" Izuku asked the man.
The man seemed to growl a bit, "Hey, kid, why don't you go run off and play for a bit, will ya? Your Mom and I just want to talk."
"...W-What are you and my Mom gonna talk about?" Izuku asked again.
"Izuku! Just go, Sweetheart, I'll...I'll be back," Inko firmly told him.
"...You sound scared, Momma."
"Damn it, you little shit, get the hint!" the man then aimed his finger gun at the kid.
"NO!" Inko grabbed the crook's wrist and raised it up in the air.
BAM!
Izuku flinched, his eyes wide in shock and fear as his mother was fighting off the thug as she was struggling her grip on his wrist.
"GO IZUKU! RUN!" Inko exclaimed to her son as she held him off.
But then, the crook used his other hand and formed his finger into a gun...and aimed it at Inko's side.
BAAAM!
Everything was in slow motion for Izuku as he saw the man, his Quirk being finger-guns, pointed his left finger hand and shot his mother, the bullet going through her right rib and out the left upper rib.
Blood spurted out of her wound.
And Izuku could do nothing...but scream out for his mother.
"MOMMY!" screamed Izuku.
Inko fell and landed on the hard graveled pavement, the blood pouring out of both her wounds.
Izuku stood there in shock...seeing his mother being harmed that way.
"Shit! Man, what a waste. With a body like that, I could've gotten a promotion," the crook glared at the boy, "Way to go, kid, you got a dying mother now. And you made me waste two bullets. You're lucky that you're alive. Maybe that's your Quirk."
And with that, the thug took off running in the other direction...leaving Izuku and his mother alone...
"...M-Mommy!" Izuku yelled out as he dropped his All Might action figure and quickly went to his mother.
She was bleeding profusely, blood coming out of her mouth as she looked to be about halfway gone.
"I-Izuku..." Inko said weakly, her eyes turning towards her son, "I-It's okay..."
"M-Mommy!" Izuku's eyes were wide with newly formed tears, and this time, these tears showed urgency, "M-Mommy, don't die! Please dooooon't!" he yelled out as he held up his mother's head.
"It's...It's okay...don't be afraid..." Inko gave him a soft smile, this one full of warmth, "Th-...The most important thing is, is that you're alright, Honey."
"M-M-M-M-M-Mooooom!" Izuku bawled as the tears went down his cheeks, his nose dripping as he felt so emotional right now.
"Izuku...Sweetie...you are my everything. I love you dearly...and...you...you can...you can be...a He-...ro..." Inko said as her voice got even weaker, "I...love you, Izuku..."
And then...Inko Midoirya took her last breath…
"...Mommy? ...Mommy? …M-...Mommy?" Izuku called out to her pitifully.
Izuku...was numb...
He just knelt there, next to his now-deceased mother in total shock.
He couldn't hear the yells of people who found them there in that alleyway...
He couldn't comprehend the sirens that were blaring in the background...
He couldn't even feel the paramedics and law enforcement take him away from his mother, who was laying there, dead...
Izuku...just...felt numb...
The police arrived...just not in the nick of time...
Once one of the paramedics zipped up the cold dead body of Inko, one lone officer by the name of Tsukauchi Naomasa looked on with a frown.
"Damn..." Tsukauchi cursed.
There was a crowd forming outside of the alleyway where Inko was shot. Police cars and ambulances were parked in the vicinity outside of it as well.
Tsukauchi watched as the now-deceased Inko was taken into an ambulance.
He remained quiet...
Turning around to one ambulance, he sees the boy Izuku Midoriya as he sits on the back ledge of it. He was carrying his All Might action figure in his hands and stared at it desolately.
Tsukauchi frowned, feeling sympathy for the kid, "That poor little boy...he's obviously traumatized."
Tsukauchi's partner, a cyclops-eyed person, overheard him and turned his attention to the boy also. He sighed and said, "Well, yeah, seeing your mother get shot right in front of you would do that to a kid..."
"...I'm going over there to talk to him. I'll be back, okay?" Tsukauchi told his partner.
"Hey now, be gentle on what you say to the boy. We don't want to make him feel even worse."
"Hey, no worries. I just feel like he needs someone to talk to," Tsukauchi informed. He then walked over to where Izuku is.
The officer stood by the young boy on his right side, while Izuku's eyes stared at the action figure, gaze looking just empty…
Tsukauchi frowned, "Hey...Izuku, is it?"
"...Yes..." Izuku softly says, his eyes not leaving the All Might figure.
"...I'm really sorry you had to experience what you saw...we'll catch this Villain, don't you worry," Tsukauchi promised.
"..." Izuku remained silent.
"..." Tsukauchi looked down at the All Might toy he has in his hands, "...You like All Might?"
"...I do...but..."
Tsukauchi didn't expect there to be a 'but' in there. He waited until the boy was finished.
"...He wasn't here...he usually comes whenever there's trouble..."
The officer's heart was really breaking for this kid. "...Stay right there, okay, Izuku?"
"..." Izuku says nothing.
Tsukauchi takes it that he understood, so he walked away from the boy for a moment.
He approached his lieutenant who was further from the scene and asked him, "Sir? Did All Might catch that Villain he was fighting back there?"
His lieutenant, a guy with an owl's head, turned to him and said, "It sounds like he did. But man, what are the odds of another Villain attacking a civilian while All Might is dealing with another one...only this time, this civilian didn't make it..." he shook his feathery head in dismay.
"Well, can I make a suggestion for something, Sir?"
"Hm? What kind of suggestion?"
"...Please bring All Might here to the scene. There's a kid who needs comforting, and I'm thinking he could do the job very well at this point."
"Is there anyone you can let us contact right now? Your father, your grandparents, any of your relatives?" asked a female police officer in sympathy, her lower teeth having fanged underbites, but having a kind face.
Izuku just sat there still staring at his All Might figure...and replied, "I don't have any grandparents...and I haven't seen my daddy. My...My mommy...said he was out of the country right now."
"Okay...well, could there be anyone else that you can let us contact?" she asked him gently.
"...My Mommy's friend, Auntie Mitsuki..."
"Okay then. What's her last name?"
"...Bakugou."
"Alright then. We'll try and contact her," the female police officer said with a sweet smile. She got up from her kneeling position and went over to the other authorities on the scene.
Izuku couldn't believe the day he was having…it seemed so surreal...first, he was told he wasn't gonna have a Quirk, and now...his mom...she's...gone...
He heard a commotion from other people, both authorities and bystanders alike, but he didn't pay any attention to it...
He then heard footsteps...and they stopped in front of Izuku.
"...Are you Young Izuku Midoriya?" said a deep voice filled with sadness.
The boy's eyes widened in surprise and looked up instantly to see...
"...A-All Might?" Izuku softly asked.
It was indeed…
It was All Might.
And he was frowning, sad and melancholy for the boy in front of him.
Izuku didn't expect this kind of meeting to happen. He would freak out by now if All Might was even in his presence...
But right now, all he felt was just...despair.
"...Young Midoriya...I...I am sorry," All Might told him, "I was so busy dealing with a petty Villain that..." he looked further down at the ground, the shame eating away at him, "...My boy, please forgive me...I...I wasn't here."
Izuku looked up at his idol in silence...his eyes then formed even more heavy tears that spilled down his face as he whimpered a cry.
This scene alone broke All Might's heart.
Before the Hero could say anything, Izuku jumped up and hugged his bigger frame, sobbing into his shirt and stomach. All Might returned the hug, his eyes tearing up as well…
No child should lose their mother… thought All Might.
Izuku sobbed on All Might, while All Might soothed Izuku...
"I'm so sorry, Young Midoriya..." All Might told him.
Sobbing as he whimpered, Izuku tried to say, "I-It's, *sniff* n-not your fault!"
I feel like it is... All Might thought grimly.
As the boy cried, he did decide to ask All Might the question that broke his world on what he wanted to be when he grows up.
"A-All Might..."
Now All Might had tears coming down his cheeks. "Y-Yes, Young One?"
"...I...I don't have a Quirk."
All Might froze as he heard that.
Izuku didn't notice the sudden stiffened jolt from All Might, so he continued asking as he cried and croaked, "I...I want to know...is it possible...for someone like me, who's Quirkless...to become a Hero?"
...
...
...
...All Might answered truthfully to the young boy...
...
...
"...Yes."
Izuku's eyes opened and widened as he looked up at his Hero in surprise.
All Might looked down at Izuku to give him the most serious face he could give him, determined frown and all.
"...Yes, Young Midoriya...you can. You can be a Hero."
End of Chapter 1
